Spanish to English translations [PRO] Science - Livestock / Animal Husbandry
Spanish term or phrase:síndrome de la cerda acordeón
I cannot figure out what the English equivalent would be. It's a syndrome caused by improper feeding that causes every alternate reproductive cycle to be affected.
I would love it if were "accordion pigs" (or "sows"), that would be very funny, but sadly it's not.
Does anyone know what this is called in English? Thanks in advance!
Explanation: As per discussion box and references.

Document I assume was in French and translated.
Body building syndromes in sows (BBS) On clinical basis, three corporal syndromes can be identified: the thin sow syndrome (TSS), the fat sow syndrome (FSS) and the **accordion sow syndrome (ASS)**. They are rarely quoted as distinct entities. BBS represent the major common denominator of many problems in the breeding herd; however, they never are behind consultation.

Thank you Kathryn. You too and the best to your family.
I found this, and I don't know whether I am complicating things more (I am amusing myself is more like it), but my French is not quite on par with Liz', so perhaps Liz can just verify this, please? Kathryn: Not sure if this adds any more to the translation, but I agree your approach is a good one!
In addition, the presence of **motor skill problems** with limb weakness in late gestation, an increase in the average duration of farrowing and vulval discharge characterises a sow that is fat at farrowing and lean at weaning ("accordion sow") ["truie accordéon].
Liz, can you check, as my French is really rusty! LOL! Thank you and stay safe!
Hi Taña. Yes, "second parity syndrome" and "second-litter syndrome" are one in the same. However, I'm going with the latter because that's the term I found used most often in the literature. As regards how I'm going to use this "Frenchism", with its very amusing mental imagery, it will read: Another problem that's intimately related to fat sow syndrome is the so-called "accordion sow syndrome". I won't put it in French, as that wouldn't really make sense translating from Spanish. This is the best solution I can think of for a term that only seems to be used in the Latin languages thus far. There are not a lot of references out there on this topic, and the French author who wrote that article seems to be one of the only publishing authorities in the field.
Also, Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (MMA syndrome) is mentioned as a separate illness in another part of the paper!

So, let me ask something, so the "second parity syndrome" which Liz mentioned in her reference posting is the same one also known as "second-litter syndrome"? Kathryn, I take it that the direction you are going is to use perhaps the French term in italics as 'accordion sow syndrome' sounds like a calque /poor translation perhaps? Just asking ... I have no issue with your approach. Again, thanks and regards.
Bahahaha, indeed! Hysterical in fact (find it quite amusing or perhaps just my weird sense of humour!). On a more serious note, yes, and very few references! Thanks so much Kathryn and will add the entry! Warms regards and stay safe!
Bahahaha... dreams do come true! How did this not pop up for me? It's from French researchers, so we may be introducing a new term into the English language, but I find it quite catchy, don't you think? If you want to add it as an answer I'll go ahead and give you the points when the 24 hrs pass! Thanks so much!

@ Kathryn: I will keeping looking for anything else to see what I can find. But why? Do you have a particular reason for saying that you didn't think "thin cow syndrome" fits? Regards. Staying safe I hope? Do you still have restrictions where you are located?
Hi Taña, yes, síndrome de la segunda camada is definitely second-litter syndrome. I'm not sure that "thin-sow syndrome" fits in with this, I also saw this one but didn't think it quite fit.
"Síndrome de la segunda camada". It's from a text on the physiology of gestation in pigs, in a section that talks about feeding-related issues that can occur in gestating sows: "second-litter syndrome"??? The decrease of litter size or farrowing rate in the second parity sows is often related to an excessive weight loss during first lactation [7, 8].
Thanks Kathryn. I just found these: Do you think it could be describing "thin sow syndrome" https://thepigsite.com/articles/basic-pig-husbandry-gilts-an... After selection at 80–90 kg liveweight, the gilt may require a special feeding program to build up her fat cover to the desired level. If this is not achieved, her fat cover becomes depleted over subsequent pregnancies, resulting in the ‘thin sow syndrome’ and her subsequent breakdown. Low specification dry sow diets are usually unsuitable, as a gilt diet should be at least 13.2 megajoules (MJ) of digestible energy (DE) per kilogram and 0.5 grams of available lysine per MJ DE. Try to achieve a daily intake of around 35 MJ DE.

Sure, sorry, it's "síndrome de la segunda camada". It's from a text on the physiology of gestation in pigs, in a section that talks about feeding-related issues that can occur in gestating sows. Thanks!
The text mentions a previous syndrome. Can you tell us what that syndrome is from your context? Thanks and stay safe.
