agree  Marijke Singer: 90s would be 2090 and I would stick with 1990s but the rest is spot on.

  -> Thanks Marijke and yes, strictly speaking the 90s would be 2090 although I do think the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s still bring the 20th century to mind! In any case I'd have no objection to using 1990s in this sentence.
