Spanish term or phrase: foco (here)
SPAIN. This appears in an article about a rare disease. My initial idea is to translate it as "cluster", but I can't find any references to back me up. NB: there are several entries in the glossaries, but none of them helpful in this particular case.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Sorry, that would be "brote" in Spanish and it is more appropriate for infectious disease than genetic disorders. Thanks anyway for the suggestion. I was going to close the query, but I'll leave it open for now.

neutral  Robert Carter: Definitely what is meant here, IMO. Credible reference source too.//Oops, lack of my own due diligence, I hadn't realized it referred to a genetic disorder. Still, worthwhile having this for future reference.

neutral  Cecilia Gowar: I believe the term is used only for commnicable diseases, which amyloidosis is not

neutral  philgoddard: Strictly speaking this is right, because an outbreak is just an area where the disease is prevalent at above the expected level. But it does sound slightly odd to me, because it's usually associated with infection.

focus (of infection)

Explanation:
I have to give this a 5 confidence level it's an important epidemiological term that I have used in my work for WHO for many years. ***It's not the same thing as an outbreak.*** See:

en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Focus_of_infection
"A focus of infection is a place containing whatever epidemiological factors are needed for transmission of an infection. Any focus of infection will have a source of infection, and other common traits of such a place include a human community, a vector population, and environmental characteristics adequate for spreading infection.[1]"
