agree  Helena Chavarria: I've also seen the words written with a hyphen: 'pre-, peri- and postoperative'.

-> It's something I always have doubts about. Personally I think they look clearer with a hyphen, especially when separating two vowels. (Although I didn't use them here because I feel the overall preference is not to use them, isn't it?)

agree  Robert Carter: The ST is poorly worded, but I would assume it means "pre- and perioperative [non-oral] administration and postoperative oral administration".

-> Cheers Robert, I see what you mean, it can be interpreted more than one way.

agree  Muriel Vasconcellos: But hyphens and US serial comma punctuation help. It would be 'pre-, peri-, and postoperative ...' That's easy: Chicago Manual of Style.

-> Thanks Muriel. Please explain or give a ref. if you have one handy - I'm keen to learn a good rule to follow, but I've seen different ones in different style guides (AMA, Chicago, between journals, etc.).//I'm not American, so I don't use extra commas ;@)
