"Extra" could be taken here to have the meaning of the 'word-forming element meaning "outside; beyond the scope of; in addition to what is usual or expected': https://www.etymonline.com/word/extra- as in "extracurricular," "extraterritorial," etc. There may well be a better English equivalent, but I haven't been able to come up with one. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 days (2018-05-22 16:24:22 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I don't think it is the same as "as needed". I think what we have here is a single, specific dose that just is outside the normal scheduled administration of the supplement.
