English translation: three invasions were launched

Spanish term or phrase: se dieron tres invasiones
Specific context here is the confiscation of local farmers' properties during the zapatista uprising of 1994. I've just never seen "darse" used with this particular collocation. Also, at the moment I just can't of the idiom that is commonly used in English in history texts when describing the invasions local people suffer at the hands of Goths, Huns or other hordes.

I get the sense that 3 invasions were "launched", and that the EZLN occupied, took over or otherwise appropriated several local properties. The passage reads:

«Se dieron tres invasiones. Se metieron a Takinás, de don Mario Balboa. Luego le invadieron otro terreno: Tantiquil. A Tankinás le pusieron El Salvador y a Tantiquil le pusieron Nazareth.»

Hope this is clear. Thanks in advance.

English translation:three invasions were launched
Explanation:
You have the right idea. In terms of popular historical writing, in this particular context the word "launched", as in "to launch an invasion/attack", is seen with great frequency.

There is a plurality of helpful contributions here. Your own personal take on the interpretation (not translation) of the material will end up being the deciding factor here. All the suggestions are equally valid, but it depends on what kind of "spin" you want to put on the translation itself. "launching/mounting/carrying out an invasion" all have a very active connotation, while "taking place" has a more passive feel to it.

Since you made an allusion to the Huns and Goths, etc., there was definitely more of a feel of aggression and barbarity in your take on the issue. Now, whether or not that would be ethically sound on your part to introduce that into the translation (if that kind of sentiment was not already present in the writing of the original author), that's a decision for you yourself to make.

Michael is right: many of the suggestions are helpful. In fact, since there are several ¶¶ on this theme, I'll need synonyms, and so will use some of the variations you've all suggested.

BTW, over the years that I've been slowly chipping away at this project (my first book-length translation), it has appeared serially in various literary magazines like the following:

http://exchanges.uiowa.edu/from-ocosingo-war-diary-voices-from-chiapas/

The author and I are shopping the project to book publishers (without an agent)simultaneously in the hope that by the time a very modest contract is signed, the full text will already have been translated piecemeal.

three invasions took place

Explanation:
This use of 'darse' is not familiar to me either.
Took place would be, in my opinion, equally impersonal.

three invasions were mounted

Explanation:
"to mount an invasion" is a fairly standard term in historical discourse.

I know the text is in the passive, but I think it might be better in English just to use the active here - "They mounted three invasions..." It's crisper, and I don't think you lose anything.

Actually, it isn't a passive but a reflexive in Spanish.

I think you could just as well say "There were three invasions."
