El “rayador negro” Rynchops niger es una ave de 50 a 60 cm de largo. Presenta la corona, nuca, cuello posterior, dorso y supracaudales centrales de color negro ahumado. La frente, ***lorums***, mejillas, garganta, pecho, abdómen, subcaudales y supracaudales laterales de color blanco. Las alas negras, largas y puntiagudas, con bordes de las alas primarias y secundarias blancos. Cola blanca en su mayor parte y pico de color rojo en su mitad basal y negro el resto; mandíbula inferior notoriamente más larga que la superior y aplanada verticalmente hacia su extremo. Patas rojas, cortas y pequeñas.
