Swedish term or phrase: åka ut
Hello

In

Gör en kort (1 s) by-pass så att vita varningsindikatorn ***åker ut***

does "åker ut" mean

comes on

or

goes out

I can't find this phrasal verb in this context and my instinct tells me it could be either one, but which one?

Thanks

go out

Explanation:
I understand your problem, SafeTex, but I think this literal translation fits.
See reference for examples of usage (although the translations are not very good English).

Example sentence(s):
  • ... so the white warning light goes out.

agree  Helen Johnson: It would be similar to what my mechanic acquaintances would call a "work-around", i.e. getting something to work by by-passing the problem.

  -> Helen, thanks for your support, but I think this is different. A work-around is a way of solving a system problem by changing something. Here, the bypass is part of the system circuitry, where certain conditions cause the blessed indicator to pop/go out.

disagree  Agneta Pallinder: "Åka ut" can't mean "go out" in the sense of lights going out. "Åka" would always represent a physical movement. Lights "slocknar" or "släcks".

  -> Agree, see my discussion entry "Pops out". I now realise I was side tracked by 'vita varningsindikator' into thinking it was a light, but it could be a white button or similar..
