Swedish term or phrase: gladt till mötes
"Affärsställningen var för en månad sedan mycket dålig öfver hela landet, men har nu börjat att blifva bättre. Vi se derför framtiden gladt till mötes."

This is from an emigrant letter from 1893. I have found a few online references pertaining to roughly the same period, although no suitable translation.

I welcome your thoughts!

We are therefore looking forward to the future
Explanation:
Seems to me this has a similar positive tone

Just now I see that Leif suggests this as an alternative. I prefer "looking forward".

Vi se derför framtiden gladt till mötes
We envisage a happy future

Explanation:
Att se till mötes = envisage

Of course, we should also cater for the 'derför'. Maybe by starting with 'Thus, "

And my choice of 'happy' can certainly be varied with other, maybe more suitable adjectives. My main point is to introduce 'envisage' for this context.

Other constructions, including 'await' or 'look forward to', may also be thinkable for 'se till mötes', but I would still prefer 'envisage' in this particular context.

Asker: Thank you, Leif. I hadn't heard of 'se till mötes' before, so that's a real help!

agree  asptech: Your sentence is correct, but the original is not (man "går till mötes", inte "ser till mötes"). But who would want to rain on this happy person's parade?

Of course, "derför" should be included; Therefore, we look to the future with confidence.
