I am very puzzled by Eurodicautom's suggestion 'backhaul'. There is a good explanation of backhaul at:
http://searchsmallbizit.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_...
and it has to do with getting data to a backbone network, not actually the backbone network itself. Meatball's first reference supports that.
In any case, backhaul is primarily a verb, not a noun, though there are examples of use as a noun.

As it's not clear whether this is a data network or electricty/radio network (as Hans-Bertil rightly points out), I suggest "backbone network" for Internet traffic, or for distributing radio traffic, or (national eletricity) grid for electricity.

Explanation:
Ett stamnät (även kallat backbone) är den centrala del av ett datornät som har hög överföringskapacitet. Till ett sådant stamnät ansluts ett lokalt nät eller enskilda abonnenter via Internet-leverantörer. Stamnät byggs idag uteslutande med optofiber. Betydligt fler varianter finns för hur man bör bygga bredband sista biten till bostaden eller det lilla företaget.
