cast iron

Explanation:
Steel is after all iron and both are covered by this term. Is is simply a collective word for all iron/steel products made through the casting process.

disagree  George Hopkins: Cast iron is not steel. Steel is an alloy based on steel containign carbon, etc. Sorry, it should read ... iron containing carbon, etc. Check Collins or other comprehensive dictionary for description of steel.

-> Ok George if you want to draw the 2% carbon limit to the edge. And what is steel if not iron?

disagree  asptech: "stålgjutgods" is definitely "cast steel", and its carbon content is more like 0,1 percent.

agree  asptech: you can call it "steel" if it can be forged or rolled, which would not be easy qith 1.7 percent carbon!!

-> For a precise definition of steel refer to a technical dictionary, eg, Chambers. The word iron is used freely, eg, iron girder which is made of steel. Iron bridges are no longer constructed; they are made of steel. The same applies to 'järnbalk', etc.
