appearance before others Explanation: "Before" would be the preposition most likely used in this context. "Framträdelse" means the act or process of something coming to appear, so "appearance" is a reasonable guess, and "appearance before others" also does give a few google hits in connection with Arendt, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is another term. |

the appearance to others Explanation: Because of the wording in Hannah Arendt's The Human Condition, I think it would be preferable to use "to others." -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 7 hrs (2011-02-03 00:42:01 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I agree that the preposition "to" seems jarring at first and that "before" would be a more natural choice. Still, because of Arendt's writing on the concepts of appearance of space and action, I think she focuses on how one's self appears "to" others in the same sense that one's self is revealed to others.
