Swedish term or phrase: bondeskald
The term is used in an autobiographical article by a poet, likening himself to "Skottlands bondeskald, Robert Burns". It also appears in a few other instances in biographical references found with a Google search.

I'm inclined to use "rural poet", but I would be happy to see something better.

agree  Thomas Johansson: "Farmer/peasant poet" is an appropriate description in modern English of the type of poet RB was; "Ploughman poet" is what he was called. Google for "ploughman poets" vs. "farmer/peasant poets".
