Turkish term or phrase: akım derken
Akım derken [intending to say] bokum demek. I know what this idiom means, viz. 'to put one's foot in it' but akım is derived from what word [surely not from 'current'] & what does the suffix -ım mean here as also -um in bokum?

literally not saying the exact thing

Explanation:
This is a proverb meaning "to say something bad trying to say something nice".
Or in general "not saying literally the exact thing"

Notes to answerer
Asker: The best answer of those offered. The English is 'to put one's foot in it' i.e. to step into something nasty, like manure whtich is now stuck to you so that you can't easily extricate yourself: If you put your foot in it you say or do the wrong thing and usually make matters worse.

disagree  Kim Metzger: White is not the same thing as clean. This would make no sense to the target audience.
