use of 'mek/mak' plus 'de/da/te/ta' 06:37 Oct 31, 2012
Tim, to my mind, this construct 'mek/mak' plus 'te/ta' has two uses: One is to clarify that the action is taking place right now: "Yapmaktayım" is more precise than "yapıyorum" (But then I'd need confirmation from other native speakers for this).
The second use is formal speech or writing. We can see this construct in newspaper pieces, in encyclopedias etc. While I speak with my friends informally I would say "Muzaffer İzgü'nün 100'den fazla kitabı var", on a newspaper that would more likely be "Muzaffer İzgü'nün 100'den fazla kitabı bulunmaktadır". Likewise, a lawyer could present herself in an informal speech by saying "sekiz yıldır avukatlık yapıyorum", but when she needs to present herself, say, at the beginning of a television show where she is a guest, she is more likely to say "sekiz yıldır avukatlık yapmaktayım". However there is no difference in the meaning. |
