On November 15, the new ProZ.com Plus service package, announced at the virtual event celebrating International Translation Day this year, began its release. The Plus package is a new set of exclusive services, tools and opportunities designed for the serious freelance translator or interpreter.
Over 1,000 freelancers pre-registered for Plus. Thank you to everyone who signed on early, and to those who continue to sign up! The ProZ.com team is looking forward to bringing you more choice in the tools at your disposal to improve your work and expand your business, while networking and having fun. You can currently lock in a discounted price on Plus if you sign up before November 30. After that, the price will go up.

(3) Open Road story 3: Mac Sharkawy

Last month we began looking at "Open Road stories", interviews with translators and interpreters who have been selected as winners so far in the Open Road prize giveaways (which will end on December 31st with a winner of a new Nissan Juke car).
These stories continue with Mac Sharkawy -- http://www.proz.com/profile/2072522 -- an English to Arabic translator based in the US, specializing in legal and financial translations.
"With the new tools and technology in the industry now, my job is so much easier than it was before. Every day there is something new. It’s exciting to see technology advancing in such a way that makes my job easier and helps me save time, which is wonderful to have in this business. I also enjoy helping other freelancers get into the field. My goal is to take advantage of these new technological developments to outsource work to my colleagues in other countries. (5) Open Road story 4: Nigel Greenwood

"I became a full-time freelance translator after being made redundant in my last position when the company I worked for, after 10 long years, closed its doors in 2008. I was then 54 and of course I was desperate and downhearted, and was searching for a job on the Internet when I found ProZ.com. I quoted for a project and, surprise! My quote was accepted, I did the translation, sent off an invoice and surprise! I received payment. This is what convinced me. Since then, indeed, I have witnessed many changes in the translating industry. That is what caused me to become more specialized. Therefore, during my free time I studied all I could about aviation and helicopters, which has allowed me to be invited to do more interpreting work in those fields."
Nigel Greenwood -- http://www.proz.com/interpreter/863048 -- is a Spanish and Catalan to English translator and interpreter who specializes in technical, engineering, legal and financial texts, and also does in-flight interpreting. He is based in Spain.

The Plus package comes with a "basket" of tools and services from third party vendors. Solutions for which you would normally have to pay separately can now be part of your Plus subscription. The first of these is CafeTran Espresso.
Chances are, you already own a CAT tool, probably more than one. But if you have not yet seen or experienced CafeTran, you may want to take a look. "Helping others is always rewarding, even when it's simply when they need an interpreter to work face to face with them while they complete paperwork. But when I really feel good is when I interpret at a doctor's office or a hospital appointment. There you can see the effect on your customer: they feel more relaxed to have someone there with them so that they can fully understand what is going on.
Translating documents is also fulfilling, but in a different way. It's a mental challenge to give the best of your language knowledge, to convey the full meaning and 'flavor' of the source. You are always learning something new..."

(8) Website widgets and networking tools to help you control your marketing and online presence

Do you have your own website, or profiles/pages elsewhere, as part of your online presence as a professional? It is now possible for you to use ProZ.com website widgets to engage more deeply with your visitors.
Three widgets are being released as part of the Plus package, to start:
1. The first, intended to help you market your services, enables you to show projects that you have done recently to your site visitors, using the "What I am working on" feature, so they can easily get a sense of the type of work you handle.
2. The next, designed for networking, makes it possible for colleagues to "Follow" you.
3. The third, related to customer engagement, enables outsourcers who visit your site and who happen to be ProZ.com users to save you to their vendor management lists at ProZ.com, so that they will remember you whether they come back to your website or not.
These widgets may be of use in controlling your marketing and online presence in different ways. For example, a person searches Google for a translator and arrives at your website, other online profile, etc. They know nothing about ProZ.com, and don't need to… ProZ.com services are working for you, behind the scenes, to help you connect with that customer. Or a potential client or collaborator using ProZ.com views your profile and goes from there to your website, and decides to "save" or "follow" you based on the content there. They can do this without needing to return to ProZ.com. In this way, the potential customer or colleague connects with you thanks to a seamless experience that spans both ProZ.com and your own website or other point of contact on the web. As a Plus subscriber you are able to present yourself in a more customized and compelling way.
