Dear Linguists,

God dag,

Actually, I myself do not know Norwegian language at all, but I strongly feel that this post should belong to this Non-English forum. However, even if a moderator/site-staff consider this post more suitable to another forum and move it there, I won't mind getting it done so.

Dear Linguists,

God dag,

Actually, I myself do not know Norwegian language at all, but I strongly feel that this post should belong to this Non-English forum. However, even if a moderator/site-staff consider this post more suitable to another forum and move it there, I won't mind getting it done so.

To cut is short, in the month of Nov., 2007, I had a new client, who has sent me around 32 thousand words to translated from Norwegian into English.

Instead of contacting and getting it translated directly by translators, I have sub-let the work to a translation agency based in Spain. The agency has a profile on Proz, and even given a highest positive blueboard entry for our agency, as payment (though a little delayed) and communication went well since beginning till the end of the project.

On my suggestion, this agency has taken the services of more than one translators (may be 3 to 5 translators), since the deadline of project was too short to be completed by one translator.

However, even though the Spain-based agency has worked on a very economical rate, he seemed to had been chosen experienced and native translators (whom I have no acquaintance with) since the client had given a positive feedback at that time getting it crosschecked by their counterpart in Norway, and also, the same client of mine has returned back to me few days before with a more voluminous project (having more than double amount of word-count as compared to that of before).

Due to obvious reasons, I have contacted the same agency to get this job done. However, I have got the following response. In his words “Dear Vivek: I am very sorry to say that I will not be able to work with you anymore. I have been forced to close the company this month, as I have not worked in almost two months. I appreciate the relationship we had, and I also hope you have the success you deserve. Warmest regards.”

I got much surprised and replied “Dear ....., I am shocked and surprised to listen it... How did you have no work in last two months? Translation field is booming up, and i am really surprised to know this.

I hope you have left this field only because you must have got some better opportunity in some other field, mustn't you?

I will really appreciate and miss your help and co-relation for quite long time... I too wish you great success at whatsoever walk of life you have decided now to travel to.....

Since you have opted out from this business, I would be grateful to you, if you can let me know the names of the translators (and their email addresses, if possible), who worked on this project in the Nov. month for you. Actually, for this current project, the client wants same set of translators who have worked on their previous projects, and I have been telling them that I have direct contact with the translators (i.e., I have never told my client that I am subletting the work and getting it done through another agency).

May be, this sounds to be too big a help to be given to, however, I do not know how should negotiate about it with you.

I am open for any suggestion you would come out to be in this regard.

Vivek”

It is already 3rd day and I have got no response from this agency, and my client has clearly said me that I MUST hire the same group of translators who worked on the previous project to maintain same quality output, consistency, and to produce faster translation output.

I am running out of time and don’t know what to do; neither the agency in question is reverting back with any response, nor my client is ready for letting me hire other set of translators.

Do you think any solution to this question?

Many thanks for your time and for any possible solution in advance.

Best regards,

Vivek Raj

Hi, Vivek. Feb 9, 2008

I think the solution to your problem is simple. If you have confirmed that your Spanish agency now is out of reach, you must inform your client fully about the situation and suggest that you find other translators to do the work for them. Since this is the only possible solution, they have to accept it.

Spare the details Feb 11, 2008

Dear Vivek

Lars is correct - you should inform your client that the old translators are not available anymore, otherwise you would be cheating him. However, I don't see why you should have to admit that you have never been in direct contact with them. Just state that they are not available - period. Your client won't have any use of knowing all the details about outsourcing and sub-outsourcing etc.

Regards,

Bjørnar
