Source text - English Going to see short projects by young filmmakers can be a dicey proposition. Generally speaking, the younger the director, the more the films rely on conversations set in video stores, guys with beards going crazy in their apartments, and rack focus shots.
Thankfully, the first short film program at the 2008 YoungCuts Film Festival exhibits few of the pitfalls that tend to result from the confluence of pro-sumer digital cameras and first year Film Studies.
As with any collection of shorts, the nine films in YoungCuts' Best Actor category are hit and miss. But a surprising number of the films would be at home at any festival, not simply one devoted to filmmakers 25 and
under. The best of the bunch explored the format of the short film, portraying a slice of life or a series of interconnected moments, rather than trying to compress a three-act narrative structure into a bathroom break.
Some highlights below:
Jackson Ward (Matthew Petcock): An American film set in a Virginian slum, Jackson Ward focuses on a police officer's involvement with a poverty-stricken family. Actor Marc John Jefferies, nominated for the YoungCuts award, is the star of the show here, with a performance mixing Cosby kid innocence with the seedier parts of New Jack City. Michael Cuomo, as the cop, also received a well-deserved nomination.
Sock War (Tyler Cowan): As I'm one game of Axis and Allies away from turning my second floor apartment into a German bunker, I found this Canadian film spoofing WWII re-enactments particularly amusing.
Assault (Kazik Radwanski): You know how walking downtown after midnight invariably involves a drunk moron in a hockey jersey either throwing up on your shoe or trying to dry-hump your girlfriend's leg? Well, this is what happens to him the next morning. Assault features a great performance by Illya Konstantin as the lead, resulting in his nomination as well.
Zona Rossa (Giorgia Farina): I've received some pretty wicked birthday presents. But it's hard to top the combination of hooker and rot-gut grappa Alfredo gets for his 17th in this Italian film. Actually, I still prefer my Blade Runner box-set. Alfredo is played by the nominated Alessandro Sperduti.
Bang! Bang! (Emilie Perrault): The only thing keeping me from amassing an armoury of BB guns is my girlfriend's insistence that I not blind the neighbourhood kids while playing ‘bullet tag.' But, I can live vicariously through this Canadian film featuring a young boy and battling anti-war sentiment with airguns.
Ultimately, the Nightlife Magazine Best Actor Award was given to 14-year-old Montreal Aliocha Schneider for Bang! Bang!, though any of the above selections were equally deserving.

Il cielo di luglio sulle Langhe ed il Roero è spesso segnalato dalle nuvole, con temporali frequenti, escursioni termiche significative tra giorno e notte, temperature anche sotto la media.
L’annus horribilis, il triste 2003, pare decisamente archiviato, la produzione si annuncia in forte ripresa e i prezzi sono destinati a scendere a livelli nuovamente accettabili. Difficile fare previsioni precise, siamo alle prese con un prodotto che cresce e matura un palmo sotto terra, ma scommettere su una grattata tra i 20 e i 30 euro non è un azzardo eccessivo. Prezzi più che buoni, se si pensa che in palio ci sono soprattutto emozioni. Tutti i test sul consumatore lo hanno dimostrato: l’attrazione fatale del Tartufo Bianco d’Alba non ha concorrenti. La nobile armonia di profumi, che virano dal caratteristico agliaceo al rassicurante miele, fino ai toni forti dello speziato per mitigarsi nell’accomodante sentore di fungo, ammaliano il gourmet con meccanismi di suggestione che sono oggetto di studio.
Gli antichi lo consideravano cibo degli Dei, con poteri afrodisiaci ben utilizzati dall’ardente Giove, il tutto mentre i ricettari romani consigliavano di cuocere i Tuberi (la classificazione dei funghi arriverà molto secoli più tardi) sotto la cenere e di consumarli con il miele. Nel Medioevo si diffidava di queste strane creature della natura, temendone effetti velenosi. More than good prices considering that emotions are the main stake. All the tests carried out on consumers showed that the attraction for The White truffle of Alba has no rivals. From the noble harmony of flavours, which go from the peculiar garlic to the more reassuring honey, to the spiced hints, and finally the simple taste of mushroom – they all captivate gourmets with suggestions which are being studied.
The ancients considered the truffle as the food of gods because of its aphrodisiac power which was properly used by the passionate Jove. The Roman recipe books suggested to cook the tubers (later classified as fungi) under the ash and to eat them paired with honey. In the middle Ages, truffles were regarded as strange creatures of nature, and people were afraid of their poisonous effects. The consecration of truffles just occurred over the last two centuries at the courts of the nobles, even though the humble cuisine has never been averse, for instance, to a truffle salad – the current price would make credit cards tremble!
