Source text - English Tourism is Switzerland’s third largest industry, employing some 300’000 people directly or indirectly and earning around SFr. 12 billion annually. One in every three people in mountain areas relies on tourism for a livelihood, although visitor numbers have been hit by the strength of the Swiss franc in recent years, during which earnings (some 6 per cent of GDP) have fallen.
Leisure activities and entertainment in Switzerland are of the high standard and diversity you’d expect from a country that celebrated 200 years of tourism in 1987 (and its 700th anniversary in 1991) and is credited with having invented tourism. It offers a huge variety of entertainment, sports (see Chapter 16) and pastimes and is blessed with a wealth of natural beauty hardly matched anywhere in the world in such a small area. The majority of tourists come to Switzerland to participate in outdoor sports, e.g. skiing and hiking, and not, for example, to savour the night life (which although lively enough for most people, may disappoint the international jet set). If you want to avoid road traffic and its ever-attendant pollution, visit one of Switzerland’s delightful car-free Alpine resorts (Bettmeralp, Braunwald, Mürren, Riederalp, Rigi-Kaltbad, Saas-Fee, Stoss, Wengen and Zermatt).

Ein Drittel der Bevölkerung in den Bergregionen lebt vom Fremdenverkehr, obwohl die Zahl der Besucher in den letzten Jahren aufgrund des starken Schweizer Frankens abgenommen hat und der Ertrag gesunken ist (um ca. 6 Prozent des BIP).
