English to German: programme brochure "Legend Lin Dance Theater Taiwan" General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Other
Source text - English The Legend Lin Dance Theater was founded in 1995 by artistic director and choreographer Li-chen LIN with the sole purpose of presenting large-scale performance works reflecting the spirit of her native Taiwan. Inspired by traditional religious rituals and ceremonial rites celebrating the rhythms of nature and our place in it, LIN’s artistry combines a lush visual aesthetics with a brilliantly original and exquisitely languid choreography that gives new meaning to the phrase “poetry in motion.” In its rare performances overseas, the Legend Lin Dance Theater has won high praise from critics and audiences alike. In 1998 its first major dance theater work to be performed abroad, Legend: Mirrors of Life, was a show-stealer at the Festival d’Avignon. In 2000 its performance of LIN’s most recent work, Anthem to the Fading Flowers, garnered the Prix du Public at the 9th Biennale de la Danse de Lyon and invitations to perform at the Festival de Otoño (2001), where it broke all attendance records, the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine, Italy (2002), and the Wolfsburg International Dance Festival “Movimentos” and Dresdin Ballet Gala (2003).
Anthem to the Fading Flowers pays tribute to the cycle of the year and the complementary principles of Yin and Yang, whose eternal struggle provides the driving force behind the changing of the seasons. Like the Chinese year, this performance unfolds in a sensuous tableaux vivant of Spring’s green awakening as the feminine principle of Yin and the masculine principle of Yang arrive at harmonic balance, then burgeons into the violent fertility of Summer’s exulting heat as Yang is in the ascendant, then declines into the graceful languor of Autumn’s melancholy beauty as Yin again takes hold, and comes full circle with the snowy glitter of Winter sleep and the promise of renewal.
The first of the four seasons, “Spring Shoots,” is performed by a male and female dancer to the accompaniment of chanting, a bass gong, and drums. The second season, “Summer Shades,” involves a much larger cast of performers, who both dance and perform the music, which involves primitive cries, chanting, and the beating of bamboo tubes. The melancholy strains of the vertical bamboo flute and the human voice provide the music for the third season, “Autumn Weakening,” which is performed by a company of female dancers. In the fourth and final season, “Winter Withering,” the flute player and singer are joined by four pipa players, all of whom appear on the stage.
