Repasando el Reino de las aves hay innumerables ejemplos de la atracción que las aves de presa han ejercido y siguen ejerciendo sobre el Hombre. Entre las rapaces un grupo ha destacado sobre los demás. Las aves cazadoras. Aquellas que para conseguir alimento han de dominar el vuelo y la estrategia en el ataque. En otras palabras, los halcones, azores, gavilanes y águilas.
Encontramos muestras de esta preferencia del hombre por las Falconiformes en obras de todo tipo. En "El Fisiólogo"1, por ejemplo, que trata sobre las diferentes formas de emplear a las aves, para curar enfermedades humanas, resulta ilustrativo que al llegar al capítulo correspondiente a los halcones, el autor, en un giro de 180º tan sólo se ocupe de cómo curarles a ellos mismos.
Ya el hombre primitivo sintió fascinación por las aves de presa, soñando entonces con establecer con ellas una alianza para cazar. Así nos lo describe el reconocido pensador español Ortega y Gasset:
"Pero antes de que el hombre cazase con el ave de carne y hueso había ya inventado el pájaro mecánico. No es inverosímil, e iría muy bien con el régimen intelectual del hombre primerizo, que la flecha representase una metáfora materializada. When we look at the avian kingdom, we see innumerable examples of man’s continuing fascination with birds of prey. Among raptors, one group has stood out from among the rest: those birds of prey that hunt live quarry. These are the subset of raptors that utilise their flying abilities and hunting instincts to stalk and attack their prey. Among these raptors are falcons, goshawks, sparrowhawks, and eagles.
We can see examples of this preference of man for Falconiformes in all kinds of written genres. In The Physiologist , for example, a work that discusses the different ways in which birds have been used to cure human diseases, it seems noteworthy that, in the chapter on falcons, the author makes an abrupt about-face and only discusses how to treat the diseases of falcons themselves.
Primitive man already displayed a fascination with birds of prey, and began to dream of forming an alliance with them for the purpose of hunting animals for food. Thus we are told by the renowned Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset:
"But before man ever hunted with a bird of flesh and blood, he had already invented a kind of mechanical bird. This idea is not in the least implausible, and it is very much in keeping with the mental patterns of primitive man that the arrow would be a material representation of a metaphor. When hunters first saw the animal sprint away, they thought that a winged bird would surely be able to overtake them.
Because primitive man could not fly and had not yet learned how to domesticate birds of prey, (it is surprising how little early man concerned himself with birds), he simply took a slender shaft and stuck a sharp point on one end, and a feather on the other end, creating an artificial flying object, the arrow, that glides swiftly through the air toward the flank of a large fleeing deer."
At some point during the course of centuries of existence, our primitive ancestors, who felt themselves to be at one with his natural environment, came to supplement the artificial bird that was the arrow with real birds of flesh and blood—specifically, with the birds of prey.
Thus, as a result of curiosity and persistence, was born the practice of falconry: the hunting art whereby man makes use of birds that have been previously trained in order to hunt wild prey in their natural environment. Or, as it also came to be defined: “The art by means of which birds of prey utilise and draw upon the best that man has to offer”.

Source text - Spanish La caza con aves de presa adiestradas, la cetrería, cuenta con más de cinco mil años de historia. Pocas actividades humanas se han mantenido ininterrumpidamente durante tanto tiempo y de forma tan cosmopolita. En la actualidad es practicada por culturas de más de 68 países.
Las razones por las cuales este arte cinegético ha pervivido a través de los siglos han variado en función de las motivaciones de los propios cetreros.
En sus orígenes, la alianza del Hombre con el ave de presa permitía capturar, y por tanto comer, animales que entonces resultaban inalcanzables.
La caza con rapaces también ha servido de escuela para nobles y caballeros, particularmente durante el medievo, ejercitándoles como jinetes o despertando sus cualidades como estrategas, habilidades aplicadas posteriormente en los campos de batalla.
Por otra parte, el requerimiento de salir al campo a diario para entrenar y cazar con el ave de presa obliga al hombre moderno urbano a mantener un vínculo casi olvidado con la Naturaleza.
Cada época y cultura habrán podido contar con diferentes argumentos, sin embargo es evidente que han de existir razones más profundas para que una actividad que requiere tantas exigencias y aporta tan poca recompensa material perdure contra viento y marea.
¿Qué se produce en la alianza entre el Hombre y el ave, para que al primero le compense dedicar gran parte de su vida al segundo?
Encontramos la respuesta en la reacción que provoca el animal en el hombre. Le desarrolla habilidades y valores como la confianza, la paciencia, la clarividencia, la perseverancia, la observación, la sensibilidad, la percepción global del entorno, la capacidad de improvisación, la humildad, la planificación de estrategias, la incondicionalidad, la abnegación… La cetrería le despierta su propia humanidad descubriéndole su esencia más noble.
Sin embargo, hoy en día, la cría doméstica ha facilitado hasta tal punto la adquisición de un ave de presa, que en ocasiones ha precipitado la decisión del interesado en iniciar esta alianza. El esfuerzo, la constancia, el tiempo y las infraestructuras necesarias para cazar regularmente, criban a estos aficionados relegándoles a la mera tenencia de aves de presa, sin alcanzar por ello el apelativo de cetreros.
Como en tantas otras actividades humanas es la excelencia en la práctica el pilar de su mantenimiento. La cetrería trasciende a la cotidianeidad del cetrero, haciéndole eslabón de la cadena humana que desde hace 5000 años encontró en la libre alianza con el ser alado su modo de vida.
Mediante este libro, concebido por un equipo interdisciplinar e internacional, pretendemos mostrar el patrimonio inmaterial de la Humanidad que constituye la cetrería. Exponer cómo culturas tan variadas, como la china, la estadounidense, la árabe o la europea pueden allanar diferencias y compartir encuentros mirando a través de los ojos de un halcón. Descubrir la fuerza de lo sencillo. Cómo seres aparentemente menores, que no entienden de fronteras, ni de política ni de situaciones económicas, aúnan a hombres cuyos países pueden estar sin relaciones diplomáticas, o incluso en guerra. El amor por las rapaces relativiza diferencias hermanando pueblos y afianzando culturas.
A lo largo de las siguientes páginas intentaremos descubrir, a quienes no han disfrutado todavía de un lance de cetrería, cómo el hombre se convierte entonces en un cazador con dos piernas y dos alas. Conseguimos la tercera dimensión, la vertical, viendo el terreno de caza a través del halcón que nos sobrevuela.
El Hombre se integra en la Naturaleza cambiando su condición de observador en participante. Se recrea presenciando la maravilla del vuelo de un ave, que le ha aceptado como compañero. Disfruta de la persecución e incluso de la huida de aquella presa que pueda merecer seguir campando por su territorio por haber jugado mejor sus cartas en el juego de la vida y de la muerte. El cetrero encuentra la recompensa en el vuelo y esfuerzo del ave. Habitualmente prefiere un buen lance sin éxito, que la captura fácil. Así se entiende que aún desplegando más medios y dedicación que cualquier cazador de escopeta se contente con un número sensiblemente menor de piezas.
A través de los diferentes capítulos podemos seguir la evolución y expansión de la cetrería a través del mundo. Desde sus orígenes en las estepas centroasiáticas hasta los tiempos modernos en cerca de setenta países. Descubriremos cómo la cetrería constituye el primer deporte en la Historia del Hombre. En el s. XIII se acuñó este término aludiendo a su práctica1,2. También presentamos a la cetrería como el origen de significativas disciplinas académicas. La observación de las aves propias y silvestres y la recogida de esta información en tratados de cetrería, como el realizado por Federico II3, constituyen el origen de la ornitología moderna. La atención de las dolencias de las aves cetreras descrita concienzudamente en estos tratados supone el origen de la ciencia veterinaria. El intuitivo análisis sobre el comportamiento y reacciones del ave de presa ante diferentes condicionamientos ha asentado los cimientos de la psicología del aprendizaje.
Las fotografías que ilustran este libro constituyen un hito en la bibliografía cetrera. Hasta la fecha no se había conseguido una colección tan completa de imágenes. Para ello, como no podía ser de otra manera, han colaborado decenas de fotógrafos de muy diversas nacionalidades. En su selección ha prevalecido su interés como documento ilustrativo de la práctica de la cetrería en la correspondiente región. Algunas constituyen la evidencia de su mantenimiento donde se consideraba inexistente.
Translation - English The art of hunting with trained birds of prey, which is known as falconry, is more than 5000 years old. Few human activities have endured without interruption for such a long period of time. Falconry is currently practiced in more than 68 countries that represent a very broad diversity of cultures.
The reasons that this art has endured for millennia are as numerous as the motivations of the falconers who have practiced it.
Man initially began to utilise birds of prey in order to hunt quarry that he was unable to capture through his own efforts and weapons.
Hunting with birds of prey has served as excellent training for nobles and gentlemen, particularly during the Middle Ages, affording them the opportunity to exercise their abilities as horsemen while also testing their strategic acumen. The skills that were developed and honed on the hunting grounds could later be applied on the field of battle.
And, in the twenty-first century, the necessity of venturing out into the country on a daily basis to train and hunt with a bird of prey forces modern urban man to maintain a connection with nature that so many human beings have all but lost.
Every era and culture has had its own particular justification for the practice. However, there must be a deeper reason why an activity that is so demanding and that affords so little material reward has endured through centuries of human history.
What is it in the alliance between man and bird that causes the former to dedicate a significant portion of his life to training and caring for the latter?
The answer to this riddle is found in man’s relationship with animals. It brings out qualities in him such as confidence, patience, the ability to predict, perseverance, sensitivity, the ability to see the big picture, to think on his feet, to plan strategically, and to display unconditional devotion and self-denial. Falconry brings out all that is most human and most noble in man.
Today, however, it has become so easy to acquire a bird of prey that the act is undertaken without due regard to the commitment involved in becoming a falconer in the truest sense of the word. Many who acquire these birds do not devote the effort, perseverance, and time, or invest in the infrastructure necessary, to properly raise and train them. Such owners of birds of prey cannot really be called falconers.
As is the case in so many other human activities, practice makes perfect. The art of falconry encompasses a reality greater than the daily tasks of the individual falconer, and makes him a link in a human chain that stretches back 5000 years to the time when men first formed an alliance with their winged companions.
This book, which has been written by an interdisciplinary team of falconry professionals from around the world, has been published with the aim of describing this precious legacy. These pages will show how the practice of falconry was a common thread that ran through vastly different cultures—whether Chinese, North American, Arab, or European. What we see here is the power of simplicity. Apparently inferior beings, who know nothing of borders, politics, or economics, become the faithful winged companions of men of different hues and tongues—men whose nations may even be the most bitter of foes. Man's love of birds of prey brings disparate peoples together and strengthens each of their distinct cultures.
In the pages that follow, we will try to describe to those who have not yet experienced the thrill of falconry how a man can be transformed from a being with two legs into a hunter with two legs and two wings, attaining a vertical dimension with the assistance of the falcon.
Falconry affords us the opportunity to participate in nature instead of being merely a passive observer. The falconer delights in witnessing the spectacle of the flight of his avian companion. He thrills at the pursuit of his quarry, and even at the successful escape of a quarry that has proven its mettle by surviving to face another hunt. The real reward for the falconer lies in beholding the flight and pursuit of the raptor. In fact, an experienced falconer often prefers a good pursuit that ultimately fails, to a capture achieved with little effort. It is thus easy to understand that, even though the falconer employs more devices and displays more dedication than any hunter who uses only a rifle, he is content with a considerably lower degree of success.
In the chapters that follow, the reader can follow the evolution and expansion of the art of falconry throughout the world. From its origins in the steppes of Central Asia to modern times, birds of prey have been used by men as hunting companions in nearly seventy countries. The reader will discover how falconry can justly be termed the first sport in human history. It was in the thirteenth century that the term “sport” was first employed in relation to falconry. We will also show how falconry is intimately related to various academic disciplines. The observations that were conducted of both domesticated and wild birds of prey, and the collecting of this information in treatises on falconry, such as the one written by Frederick II , facilitated the development of modern ornithology. The description of the ailments of falcons that was described in such minute detail in these treatises helped advance veterinary science. The intuitive analysis of behaviour, and the reactions of birds of prey under varying conditions, formed the basis of modern learning theory.
The photographs that appear in this book constitute a landmark in the history of falconry. Until now, such a complete collection of images has never been published. Accomplishing such a feat involved the collaboration of dozens of photographers representing a plethora of different nationalities. The selection of photographs for this volume was determined by their representativeness in terms of illustrating the practice of falconry in the regions where the images were captured. In some cases, the photographs constitute documentary evidence of the contemporary practice of falconry in regions where it was thought to have disappeared.
