Source text - English Changing the style/look of a paragraph 07
Word defines a paragraph as any text before the “enter” character and they’re a really useful way of presenting your document because you can change the formatting of a paragraph independently from the rest of your document.
For example, just by clicking anywhere in this paragraph here, I can change the background colour of this paragraph.. and the indentation… without it effecting the rest of my document. And there are various other ways of formatting your paragraphs.
One way of seeing where each individual paragraph starts and ends is by going up to the home tab in the ribbon, and in the paragraph section we click on this button.
This will show all of the hidden formatting characters in our document such as when we’ve indented a line, when we’ve pushed the space bar and this one here is the paragraph mark and appears whenever we’ve pushed enter. So we know all the text in front of this mark is its own paragraph and so can be formatted independently.
To turn off the formatting characters we go back up to the same button as before and click. But if you like working with them you don’t need to turn them off, as they won’t appear when you print your work.
