Contact

Please feel free to send an email to [email protected] to agree a time in advance.

Client email addresses not linked to organizations/businesses will be asked to provide proof of payment before projects are sent and remember I cannot quote until I have seen the original document, and I will not begin work until you have accepted my quotation. Upon receipt of the complete source material, I will be able to give you a quote.

Every project is individually priced to ensure you get the best value for money.

I do not charge by the page (after all every page is different), but by the word. A rough 'per page' estimate of words in a single-spaced typed document is around 400-500 words. But a really closely-typed page can sometimes contain as many as 1,000 words. If you don't know how many words are in your text, just send it to me, and ask for a no-obligation quote. Services are always tailored to your needs.

Thank you in advance for your interest in my services.

Spanish Translations Services

Accurate, nuanced and well-researched terminology.

060603g0027.jpg
I am a London-based qualified translator, specialized in English and Spanish languages.

  • A reliable professional who is a Chartered Linguist in the UK.
  • Business and language training in London, Barcelona, Bologna and Vancouver Island.
  • Over 20 years of experience in business documents of every kind.
  • UK University education in English and Spanish leading to a bachelor’s degree and postgraduate diploma.
  • Ability to produce detailed and accurate work in a timely manner. Translations are ALWAYS delivered within the specified deadline.
  • Advanced Italian (Certified by Italian Institute in Canada and Italy) and good understanding and basic communication in French (Certified by Alliance Française in UK.)
  • Multicultural collaboration to deliver solution in complex, fast paced, corporate environments
  • Throughout my career I have lived, worked and studied in numerous cultures spread across three continents. I am passionate about Travel, Language and Culture. This has led me to travel in Europe, North and South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina.)

Industry Expertise

  • I have had extensive translation work experience in the UK and Canada as an IN-HOUSE translator. Although I am at home in a wide range of fields - ranging from general business documentation, legal documents and contracts, knowledge base articles, manuals and marketing contents - I specialize mainly in the following areas:
  • Travel and Tourism - travel magazines, brochures, hotel menus and service guides, restaurant menus, catalogues, travel posters, newsletters, guides to cruise ship amenities, tourist guides, travel reviews.
  • Film Industry in Marketing- translation of material testing (trailers, TV spots, print ads, etc.) concept and positioning studies, exit polls, recruited audience screenings, tracking studies, and focus groups, as well as host of ad-hoc, custom offerings including brand/franchise studies, title tests, post release studies, and attitudes and usage studies.
  • Quality Gaming and Online Betting Translations - includes UI interface localisation and cultural localisation.
  • Localization of Journalistic Texts - is the text intended for a political daily or weekly newspaper or for the tabloids? Will the text be published in print or on a website? In many cases the format and length of journalistic texts are defined by the set layout. This means that while maintaining the variation of language, a lot of information needs to be processed economically in the available space. The entire range of stylistic techniques will be used here: idiomatic turns of phrase, fashionable and made-up words, jargon and foreign terms; figurative language and metaphors also help make complex topics accessible.
  • Marketing and Media Projects - translations that are on brand and culturally relevantperfectly suited to your requirements.  A good translator spends a lot of time researching - your products, your industry, your business.
  • E-commerce & Business - accurate, properly formatted, affordable to all type of businesses and professional organizations in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Medical Projects: translation of well-researched physiotherapeutic treatments and conditions related to Temporomandibular Jaw Joint (TMJ) and muscle disorders

Someone who gives back to the community. I provide translations for charities and NGOs through Translators without Borders (TWB), a non-profit organization set up to provide translations services for humanitarian non-profits. Some of those groups are Doctors Without Borders, Medicines du Monde, UNICEF, Oxfam, Handicap International. See my donated words badge here

Translation is NOT simply the transfer of words one by one from one language to another. Machines can do that. What machines cannot do is convey culture, nuances, subtleties, expressions, grammar and appropriateness of the text. I translate more than words - provide well crafted words!

How to order a translation

When a client gets in touch with me, we determine the following information:

Step 1: Project Scope Analysis

Type of work needed- for example, translation, proofreading, transcription, social media moderation or editing work.

Brief - the intended use of the translation and its target audience.

Deliverables - the format of the file to be delivered, method of delivery and applicable deadlines.

Pricing and payment information - final quote, payment terms, and any discounts are confirmed before the start of the project often in a purchase order sent by the client.

Background materials - any reference materials, style guides, glossaries, that need to be adhered to the translation are provided by the client.

Step 2: Formal Approval

Before the start of the project, we will sign off on written document delineating the services to be performed and any applicable conditions. In case of corporate clients, this is usually done through signing a contract and sending a purchase order or scope of work.

Step 3: Research and Communication

If not already provided, I will ask for any background materials, translation memories, previous translations, style guides, or preferred term lists you may be able to provide. Even if none are available, I will search for content that is similar to yours in domain, audience, and purpose and will use it as a blueprint for the translation and as a source for terminology. An example of such content may be websites of companies in your industry.

If no term list was initially provided, I will compile a list of key terms and their proposed translation for the client’s approval. These terms will then be used in translation.

Should any doubts arise during translation, I will compile a list of questions and send it to the client to ensure that my translation reflects the author’s intent.

Step 4: Delivery

The translation will be delivered as soon as possible. I am well aware that my clients are often in a huge rush to have their translations. Translations will always be delivered within the specified deadline.

TERMS OF SERVICE

Invoicing System

English and Spanish languages. Unless agreed beforehand, as general rule, such translations are invoiced by the number of words in your source translation document (English) and never the number of target words (Spanish). Invoices are delivered by email and Clients can access them via their login details.

VAT.

VAT is applicable to all invoices to Clients based in the United Kingdom. Under the reverse charge system, no VAT is applied to invoices to Clients based in the European Union with a valid VAT registration number, or to Clients outside the European Union. This provision may change in the event of a change in legislation.

 Delivery Dates

A date for delivery should always be agreed with Evelyn Dench prior to issuing a translation order. Evelyn Dench will always try to be flexible in order to meet a particular urgent deadline, but in general Clients should give as much notice of the need for translation work as possible and relevant to the amount of work involved.

Payment Conditions

Invoices are issued shortly after delivery of translation and by latest end of the month of delivery, and are payable within 30 days of receipt without reminder. Evelyn Dench reserves the right to apply interest to any outstanding amount after 30 days.

Liability

While Evelyn Dench uses its quality control procedure to check and re-check translation for accuracy, content and style before delivery, and every effort is made to impart an appropriate style, no liability can be accepted for any inadvertent inaccuracy in the translation, nor for any fine distinction in tones or grades of vocabulary used, nor writing styles employed. It is understood that a translation is, to some degree, a creative piece of work and one person may choose a term or style that another person may not like.

Property Rights and Copyright

Completed translations do not become the property of the client until paid for in full. Evelyn Dench reserves the right to maintain copies of the translation with or whole or in part, in electronic format, for future reference. Such copies are built into a database of professional knowledge and expertise. It is responsibility of the Client to ensure that the Client has the right to commission the translation of the text sent for translation and indemnifies Evelyn Dench against any breach of copyright law.

Confidentiality

All texts submitted to Evelyn Dench for translation are handheld in confidence and not divulged to a third party, except at the writing request of the original client. This is in line with the Code of Conduct of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.

Grievances

Clients must make known to Evelyn Dench, in writing, any grievance they may have in regard to a translation delivered as soon as they become aware of such grievance. No grievance will be considered until Evelyn Dench has had the opportunity to study the complaint. Evelyn Dench shall not be held liable for any changes made by the end client, not for any error (such as typing error) that may be considered extremely minor in nature. Should an error prove to be major in nature (mistranslation etc), Evelyn Dench reserves the right to call in an independent adjudicator to assess the extent to which such an error might have affected the end client.

Safeguarding

Completed translations are kept in Evelyn Dench's archives for a minimum of six months from the date of delivery.

Overdue Deliveries

Evelyn Dench will keep the client informed in the unlikely event that the agreed delivery date may not be met.

Force Majeure

Evelyn Dench shall not be liable in the event that and event or situation beyond its control occurs that prevents the translation from being delivered by the agreed time. In such event Evelyn Dench will make every effort to supply the work as quickly as possible thereafter. Force Majeure include power failures, illness, transportation delays, equipment failures (including Internet and e-mail failures) and acts of God such as flood, fire, etc. This list is not exhaustive.

Thank you for your interest in my language services and I hope we can do business together.

Conditions of Business

'Translation Services'
means the rendition of a text from one language into another, as requested by the Client.

Qualifications of Translator

Evelyn Dench is a qualified, professional translator, translating into her native language of Spanish (Latin American variant), with experience in the field from which the text has been taken. In certain extremely urgent cases, where a delay would prejudice the Client's business, and with the agreement of the Client, straightforward and relatively short translations (memos, emails, faxes etc.) may be undertaken in-house. Evelyn Dench is a qualified member of the CIOL.

Technical Subjects

If the field from which the text has been taken is a specific technical field, the Client is urged to provide as much background information as possible, in the form of web sites, glossaries, previous material (where such exist) in order to assist the translator in providing a correct rendition of a text. In cases of doubt, Evelyn Dench will seek to clarify a specific technical term or concept directly with the client. The aims of this is to provide a proper and accurate rendition of the original. However it is understood that even an experienced technical translator may not necessarily be familiar with every detail of the subject. Where the translation is destined for publication or for legal purposes, it is recommended that the Client should arrange for an additional expert in the field to check the translation locally for current Client-specific terminology prior to publication. I also urge clients to provide feedback with regard to specific technical terms so that these can be incorporated into a database of terms.

General Subjects

Where possible, the Client should give Evelyn Dench sufficient background (explanation of business situation, web sites, previous correspondence) to the translation in questions to enable the translator to place the text in context. This is particularly important for short translation, where the context is not immediately clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does translation entail?

Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. It is NOT simply the transfer of words one by one from one language to another. Machines can do that. What machines cannot do is convey culture, nuances, subtleties, expressions, grammar and appropriateness of the texts. A good translator spends a lot of time researching - your products, your industry, your business. The end result will be a text that does not feel translated.

A good translator spends a lot of time honing skills and knowledge by undergoing a programme of continuing professional development - just like doctors and accountants do.

A good translator understands the spirit of the  text - and conveys it into the other language so that the reader hardly knows it was translated.

What is Neutral Spanish?

I operate a professional, Neutral Spanish, commonly referred to as Standard Spanish, Global Spanish or Universal Spanish, is a variation of the Spanish language used to allow the majority of Spanish speakers to understand the message without the use of local terminology and certain verb tenses. If your intention is to target a broader audience of Spanish speakers, you will need to use a neutral Spanish that will be accepted and understood by the entire Spanish-speaking population.

Which language services do you offer?

I operate a professional translation, proofreading and transcription service in English and Spanish. I offer very competitive rates and a quick turnaround time. I can also respond to short notice to help meet tight deadlines and schedules.
