En la capital galesa de Cardiff hay alrededor de 15.000 personas en busca de empleo para un total de 1.700 puestos de trabajo, según datos del Departamento de Trabajo y Pensiones. Esto supone que hay nueve personas buscando trabajo por cada puesto.
Conocido anteriormente como ‘I will rave on the grave of dead economy’ (‘Bailaré sobre la tumba de la economía’) el colectivo ‘The Unemployed Daytime Disco’, se propone dar un toque de fiesta a las noches de Cardiff con el objetivo de desbaratar el tedio que supone la búsqueda infructuosa de trabajo en estos tiempos que corren.
De hecho, a finales del pasado año, en concreto el 21 de diciembre, coincidiendo con el solsticio de invierno y el primer eclipse lunar en tres años, este colectivo celebró un fiesta nocturna en la que se dieron cita actuaciones musicales en vivo, DJ’s, recitales de poesía y monólogos cómicos. Visto el éxito de este precedente ‘The Unemployed Daytime Disco’ ha decidido llevar a cabo otra para el próximo viernes 18 de febrero.
Al igual que en la edición pasada, la fiesta tendrá lugar The Rockin Chair de Cardiff y bajo el lema ‘I’m so bored of JSA’, el eventó contará también con conciertos en directo, DJ’s y recitales. Actuarán Robby Moreno con su banda de punk ‘The Opressed’; el activista, compositor y pianista Frances Crack; y el músico Daffyd del grupo Kilnaboy que ofrecerá una actuación en solitario. Como novedad respecto a la anterior edición se instalará una Charity Shop de discos y artículos relacionados y un taller de arte.

Translation - English ‘I’m so bored of JSA’: the party of the unemployed
According to the Department of Work and Pensions, in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, there are around 15,000 people looking for work for a total of 1,700 available jobs. This means that there are nine job seekers for every job vacancy.
Formerly known as ‘I will rave on the grave of the dead economy’, the group ´The Unemployed Daytime Disco´, has given a party touch to Cardiff’s nights, with the aim of breaking the tedium that constitutes the fruitless job search in these current times.
In fact, towards the end of last year, on the 21th of December, coinciding with the winter solstice and the first lunar eclipse in three years, this group celebrated the night with a party which included live musical performances, DJ’s, poetry’s recitals and comedy monologues. With the success of that event, ‘The Unemployed Daytime Disco’ has decided to hold another party next Friday, the 18th of February.
The same as last time, the party will take place at The Rockin Chair in Cardiff, with the theme ‘I’m so bored of JSA’; the event will also have live concerts, DJ’s and recitals. Performing at the event will be Robby Moreno and his punk band ‘The Oppressed’; the activist, composer and pianist Frances Crack; and the musician Daffyd, from the group Kilnaboy, will give a solo performance. New features, this time, will include a Charity Shop selling records and other similar items, also an art workshop.

Así ha ocurrido pese a la tormenta provocada por las revelaciones sobre el extenso espionaje realizado por sus embajadas a nivel mundial, en especial contra la ONU.
Desde el miércoles primero de diciembre, y durante todo el mes de diciembre, el órgano de Naciones Unidas encargado de garantizar la paz y la seguridad internacionales estará encabezado por la representante permanente norteamericana, Susan Rice.
Su llegada a la dirección del Consejo de Seguridad coincide con la publicación de cientos de miles de documentos secretos que ponen al descubierto la actividad de espionaje realizada durante años por la diplomacia estadounidense.
En la hoja de servicios de la actual embajadora de Washington ante la ONU aparece una larga trayectoria dentro del servicio exterior, como el alto cargo de secretaria adjunta para Asuntos Africanos durante cuatro años (1997-2001).
También se desempeñó como consejera de la campaña del actual presidente, Barack Obama, para asuntos de Seguridad Nacional, según datos biográficos publicados en la página de Internet del Departamento de Estado.
De acuerdo con los documentos puestos a la luz pública por el sitio Wikileaks, los diplomáticos norteamericanos ejecutaron innumerables acciones de espionaje que también tocaron a la ONU y a sus dirigentes y funcionarios y embajadores extranjeros.
Uno de los blancos principales de esa actividad fue el secretario general de la organización mundial, Ban Ki-moon, de quien buscaban datos sobre su estilo de dirección y de toma de decisiones, así como su influencia en el aparato de la ONU.
Esa actividad secreta también afectó a diplomáticos de varios países, como China, Rusia, Francia y Reino Unido, que junto a Estados Unidos son los miembros permanentes del Consejo de Seguridad.
Asimismo, estuvo dirigida a recabar información personal, como tarjetas de crédito y horarios de trabajo y hasta datos biométricos y huellas dactilares.
Otros objetivos de ese seguimiento fueron los subsecretarios de la ONU, los jefes de las agencias y organismos especializados, asesores, ayudantes y responsables de operaciones de paz y misiones políticas de la organización, según los documentos de Wikileaks.
Interrogada por la prensa en la sede neoyorquina de Naciones Unidas acerca de esas revelaciones, Rice dijo hace dos días que los diplomáticos de su país "son sólo eso: diplomáticos, y a eso se dedican cada día".
"El trabajo que hacen los diplomáticos estadounidenses en la ONU y en todo el mundo es indispensable para nuestra seguridad nacional y hace avanzar sustancialmente nuestros intereses compartidos en la paz y la seguridad internacionales", indicó.
Antes de estallar el escándalo de los papeles secretos, Rice informó a Ban Ki-moon acerca del contenido de los materiales de Wikileaks, según dio a conocer el vocero oficial adjunto de la ONU, Farhan Haq.
Tras la divulgación de los documentos, el secretario general dijo que "nadie se siente feliz cuando sabe que es vigilado por alguien" y advirtió que los Estados deben respetar todas las convenciones y tratados relativos a la protección de las inmunidades y privilegios.

Que el jefe del imperio estadounidense sea visto internacionalmente con tanta simpatía y admiración es, para muchos, muy problemático. Hay gobiernos para quienes es indispensable tener a Estados Unidos como enemigo. Y todos conocemos gente para quienes el antiamericanismo es casi un instinto básico y la fuente principal de sus opiniones políticas.
Es por esto que "bushificar" a Obama se pondrá de moda.
La "bushificación" de Barack Obama es el próximo y casi inevitable capítulo de la narrativa que comenzó con la seguridad de que era imposible que los estadounidenses pudieran elegir a un negro como presidente, la sorpresa de la victoria de Obama, la desbordada emoción durante su asunción y las enormes expectativas acerca de su capacidad para resolver los inmensos problemas que hereda.

Tres días después de la asunción de Obama, Estados Unidos bombardeó a un grupo de presuntos talibanes en el noroeste de Paquistán, en un ataque que dejó 14 muertos. El gobierno paquistaní protestó contra la nueva violación de su soberanía y confirmó que su esperanza de que Obama no continuara con la política de Bush en este sentido era tan sólo una ilusión.

Sin embargo, a nadie sorprende que en el mundo árabe ya haya quienes denuncian al gobierno de Obama como la simple continuación de la administración de Bush, sólo modificada con una mayor cantidad de judíos en el gabinete y en otros cargos de máxima relevancia.
En algunos casos, la "bushificación" de Obama tendrá asideros en la realidad de que habrá continuidad entre las políticas del nuevo presidente y las de Bush. Pero en muchos otros casos, sólo responderá a los esfuerzos propagandísticos de quienes necesitan siempre tener a un enemigo en la Casa Blanca. Pero no les será fácil. Una de las características de la trayectoria política de Obama es que siempre ha sorprendido a sus críticos y a los escépticos. Y, en este caso, no le resultará difícil sorprenderlos de nuevo. El 90% de los alimentos producidos anualmente pertenecen a solo 10 grandes multinacionales. Empresas que interponen sus beneficios a las vidas humanas. 1.000 millones de personas sufren hambre en un planeta donde sobra comida.

Mientras Nestlé embotella y vende el agua del subsuelo del Pakistán a un alto precio, muchos de los ciudadanos del país asiático no tienen acceso al agua potable.
Otros habitantes que ven como sus recursos desaparecen son los indígenas de la selva amazónica. Sus bosques se han convertido en verdes prados donde pastorean las reses de vacuno de los proveedores de Kraft.
Son solo dos ejemplos del impacto social y ambiental que ocasionan dos grandes multinacionales de la alimentación y, que han interpuesto sus intereses comerciales a cualquier circunstancia.
Un informe de Intermón Oxfam ha querido demostrar las principales irregularidades de las 10 principales empresas de la alimentación, y cómo sus negocios impactan negativamente en el Tercer Mundo.
Empresas como Coca-Cola, Pepsico, Unilever, Associated British Foods, o Danone, forman parte del estudio.
La investigación señala que los negocios de estas multinacionales están detrás de la degradación del ecosistema, de los altos índices de hambruna e incluso, de casos de explotación infantil.
Estos poderosos grupos controlan hoy en día gran parte de la producción de los alimentos que existen en el planeta, llegando a controlar el 90% del volumen total.
Además, el estudio advierte que sus prácticas comerciales están “debilitando notablemente la seguridad alimentaria y reducen las oportunidades económicas de las personas más pobres del mundo”.
Añade el escrito que las políticas comerciales no favorecen a crear “un sistema alimentario más justo”.
Carlo Petrini, presidente y fundador de Slow Food, ha culpado en una conferencia en Bogotá que las empresas alimentarias están detrás de los problemas del hambre.
“La industria alimentaria es una mafia criminal”, de esta forma Petrini denunciaba que “el 80 % de las semillas en el mundo solo pertenecen a cinco multinacionales”, controlado con sus decisiones el futuro de muchas naciones.
Unas afirmaciones que vienen respaldadas por Janaina Stronzake, del Movimiento de los Trabajadores Rurales Sin Tierras de Brasil, quien ha asegurado que “las multinacionales especulan con el hambre de la gente y obtienen beneficios”.
Sobreproducción vs. Hambruna
El monopolio de estas empresas en la producción alimentaria les permite en la actualidad marcar el precio de sus productos, una realidad que está detrás “de la epidemia de la hambruna”.
La crisis del hambre afecta a cerca de 1.000 millones de personas. Paradójicamente, la Tierra está habitada por unos 7.000 ciudadanos, pero la producción actual de alimentos podría abastecer prácticamente al doble, a unos 12.000.
Además, un informe de la OCDE señala que entre un 40 y un 50% de los alimentos producidos se desperdicia debido a los intereses de las empresas, que se rigen por las leyes de la oferta y la demanda.
A pesar de la excesiva productividad, cada año mueren cerca de 2’5 millones de niños por desnutrición. Expertos en la materia, consideran que el problema de la hambruna no se debe a la falta de alimento, sino al acceso que tienen las personas a ellos.
Los elevados precios o la escasez de alimentos básicos en determinadas regiones, son dos realidades que se deben a las políticas comerciales de las multinacionales para encarecer sus productos.
Especulando con el hambre
Una de las regiones más afectadas por el hambre, y los intereses comerciales, es el territorio del Sahel. Allí 18 millones de personas no tienen acceso a una alimentación básica.
Los habitantes de esta árida zona, precisan de la ayuda internacional para poder sobrevivir. Pero el hambre en el Sahel, a pesar de las duras condiciones meteorológicas, está relacionada con la especulación de los precios de los alimentos básicos.
Un ejemplo de ello, es el encarecimiento en un 106% de los cereales básicos en Somalia en solo un año, mientras que en Kenia el precio del maíz aumentó un 55% entre 2010 y 2011.
Además, el miembro de las Naciones Unidas Olivier De Schutter, añade que “el mayor impulso de la hambruna, en regiones como el Cuerno de África, es la venta por parte de los países subdesarrollados de sus territorios cultivables a empresas privadas”.
Según un estudio de Intermon Oxfam y de Land Matrick Partnership, en la última década se han traspasado unas 227 millones de hectáreas.
En países como Etiopia, el gobierno nacional ha vendido parte de su territorio a países árabes y a multinacionales, especulando con el valor de la tierra y haciendo imposible que los nativos puedan adquirir sus propias huertas por los elevados costes del terreno.
Potencias como Arabia Saudí, Kuwait o los Emiratos Árabes, han comprado miles de hectáreas en África para plantar cultivos que posteriormente exportarán para poder alimentar a sus conciudadanos, y provocando por consiguiente, la escasez de alimentos en países como Somalia y Etiopía.
El valor de la especulación
Un informe de Lehman Brothers refleja que “la inversión especulativa en alimentos ha pasado de 13.000 millones de dólares en 2003 a 260.000 millones en 2008”, unos datos que crecen a la par que las cifras de la crisis alimentaria.
Para Jean Ziegler, Asesor del Consejo de Derechos Humanos de Naciones Unidas, “es un despropósito que el precio de los alimentos sea fijado por la Bolsa”.
El asesor también critica, que en la actualidad potencias desarrolladas impulsan políticas que fomentan la dependencia de los países pobres. “La Unión Europea exporta productos agrícolas a África a precios muy bajos y destruye la agricultura africana”, comenta.
Negociar con los precios de los alimentos es también un atractivo que utilizan grandes grupos bancarios para captar a inversionistas.
Desde organizaciones como Africando.org, se ha reprochado que grades compañías financieras como Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bank of America, Santander, o Deutsche Bank, entre otras, estén haciendo negocios “con el precio de los alimentos y se presente la inversión especulativa como un negocio seguro y rentable”.
Pero entre los países con dificultades, también existen políticas poco éticas. Un ejemplo de ello, es la estrategia denunciada por Amador Gómez, miembro de la organización Acción contra el Hambre.
“Nigeria le compra a Níger parte de su producción y espera a que Níger agote sus reservas para que el precio suba y volver a exportar el mismo producto más caro”, narra.

Other inhabitants who are seeing how their resources disappear are the indigenous people of the Amazonian jungle. Their forests have been transformed into green meadows where the cattle of Kraft’s suppliers graze.
These are only two examples of the social and environmental impact caused by two major food multinationals, which have put their commercial interests before anything else.
Intermon Oxfam has published a report aiming to show the main irregularities of the 10 principal food companies, and how their businesses have a negative impact on The Developing World.
Companies such as Coca-Cola, Pepsico, Unilever, Associated British Foods and Danone are part of this study.
This investigation points out that the businesses of these multinationals are responsible for the degradation of the ecosystem, high rates of starvation and even cases of child exploitation

Overproduction vs. Famine
The monopoly of these companies in food production allows them to fix their prices, a reality that is behind the ‘famine epidemic’.
The hunger crisis affects nearly 1,000 million of people. Paradoxically, the Earth is inhabited by approximately 7,000 million people, yet current food production could support 12,000 million, nearly double the amount.
Also, a report by the OECD points out that between 40% and 50% of food produced is wasted because of these companies’ own interests, governed by the laws of supply and demand.
Despite excessive productivity, nearly 2.5 million children die every year from malnutrition. Experts consider that the famine problem is not due to lack of food, but people’s lack of access to it.
High prices and basic food shortages in some regions are two realities caused by the commercial politics of the multinationals aimed at raising the prices of their products.
Speculating with hunger
One of the regions most affected by famine, and commercial interests, is the Sahel region. There, 18,000 million people don’t have access to a basic diet.
The inhabitants of this arid area need international help to be able to survive. But the famine in the Sahel, despite harsh meteorological conditions, is related to price speculation of basic foods.
An example of this is the 106% increase in price of basic cereals in Somalia in only one year, whilst in Kenya the price of corn increased 55% between 2010 and 2011.
Olivier De Schutter, member of the United Nations adds ‘the greatest cause of famine, in regions such as the Horn of Africa, is the sale by underdeveloped countries of their cultivable territories to private companies’.
According to studies Intermon Oxfam and Land Matrick Partnership, in the last decade some 227 million hectares have been transferred.
In countries like Ethiopia, the national government has sold part of its territory to Arab countries and multinationals, speculating on the cost of land and making it impossible for natives to buy their own farms due to the high cost of land.
World powers like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the Arab Emirates, have bought thousands of hectares in Africa to grow crops that they will later export to be able to feed their fellow citizens, causing food shortages in countries like Somalia and Ethiopia.
The cost of speculation
A Lehman Brothers report says that ‘the speculative investment in food went up from 13 billion dollars in 2003 to 260 billion in 2008’, these numbers increase in parallel with the number of food crises.
For Jean Ziegle, Adviser of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ‘it is absurd that food prices are fixed by the Stock Exchange’.
The adviser also says that it is actually the politics of developed world powers which encourage the dependency of poor countries. ‘The European Union exports agricultural products to Africa at very low prices and destroys African farming’.
Speculating with food prices is also a strategy used by major bank groups to gain investors.
Organizations like Africando.org have criticized major financial companies like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bank of America, Santander or Deutsche Bank, amongst others, for making business ‘with food prices and presenting speculative investment as a profitable and secure business’.
Nevertheless, amongst countries with difficulties, there is also politics without ethics. An example of this is the strategy condemned by Amador Gómez, member of the organization Action against Hunger.
´Nigeria buys from Niger part of its production and waits until Niger exhausts its own reserves so that prices increase and they can then export the same product again at a higher price´, he says.

Podrían movilizar a más de 250.000 trabajadores públicos. La cita será el 5 de abril, fecha que marca el fin del año fiscal 2012/13, y momento en que se aplicarán nuevas contribuciones.
Los planes de contención del endeudamiento del Gobierno inglés han protagonizado una serie de recortes salariales que afectan a los funcionarios de la administración pública.
Por estos motivos, y en defensa de las condiciones laborales, se han organizado una serie de reivindicaciones en el Reino Unido.
Según los sindicatos, desde el inicio de la recesión en 2008, los sueldos han descendido un 7%, es decir, 50 millones de libras cada año. Y, según datos de la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas, el Gobierno a partir de 2015 aplicaría una reducción adicional de £7 millones en los salarios.

Según el informe de The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), la “caída en el valor de la remuneración podría ser un gran obstáculo para el retorno del crecimiento económico”.
Frente a la oposición del Gobierno de Cameron a negociar mejoras en las condiciones salariales, la organización llama a la movilización de los empleados estatales para reivindicar la defensa de sus sueldos, pensiones y de los términos y condiciones laborales a los que están sujetos.

Promovida por mexicanos, hace unas semanas comenzó una nueva campaña en apoyo a Julian Assange y al soldado Bradley Manning.

A través de las redes sociales como plataforma principal, la campaña plantea tres demandas principales: la liberación del soldado estadounidense (preso desde mayo de 2010, acusado de haber filtrado la información clasificada del Departamento de Estado), el cese al hostigamiento judicial contra el fundador de Wikileaks, y el respeto a la libertad de expresión en el mundo.
Internet es el cauce mediante el cual los mexicanos agrupados en el movimiento nacional e internacional #Yosoy132 están promoviendo en todo el mundo una masiva manifestación de apoyo para Assange, Manning y para lograr la “democratización de los medios y la información”.
Así lo plantean en el video que ha tenido amplia difusión desde que se colocó en las redes sociales, y en el que los mexicanos convocan a sumarse a la campaña denominada “#YosoyAssange, #Yosoy132” desde varias ciudades del mundo, entre ellas Chicago, Munich, París, Londres y la Ciudad de México.
La campaña consiste en que los simpatizantes de esta causa coloquen su fotografías en las redes sociales con el mensaje “#YosoyAssange, #Yosoy132”.
Después, informan, harán llegar estas expresiones de apoyo al fundador de Wikileaks directamente en la embajada de Ecuador en Londres, donde permanece en calidad de refugiado político desde el 19 de junio de 2012.
La campaña en sí misma es una manifestación de apoyo para Wikileaks por parte del movimiento una vez que comparten objetivos comunes en cuanto a la libertad de expresión.
Sin embargo, también se trata de un gesto de agradecimiento por la manifestación de apoyo que Assange ofreció al movimiento el 23 de febrero pasado, a través de un videoenlace hasta la Ciudad de México, con motivo de la presentación del libro México en Wikileaks, Wikileaks en La Jornada, editado por este diario, socio mediático de Wikileaks en la difusión de los cables diplomáticos de las embajadas estadounidenses alrededor del mundo.

Assange expresó que hace algunos años Internet era “un espacio opaco en lo político, ahora es el lugar número uno en que las personas se educan, y domina la habilidad de la nueva generación de entender el mundo, comparada con 20 años atrás. Por eso vemos el surgimiento, por ejemplo, de un movimiento como #YoSoy132, un movimiento en favor de la verdad en México y no de la corrupción a cargo de los medios”.
Y luego alzó un letrero con la frase “#Yosoy132”.
Activismo permanente
En mayo el movimiento #Yosoy132 cumplirá un año de permanecer activo dentro y fuera de México.
En 2012, en víspera de las elecciones de presidente de la República, millones de personas, principalmente jóvenes universitarios, se congregaron en este movimiento para demandar comicios transparentes y democráticos, sobre todo en el actuar de las empresas de televisión, radio y prensa escrita donde era visible un apoyo desmedido para el entonces candidato del derechista Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), Enrique Peña Nieto, actual presidente de México.
Peña Nieto asumió la presidencia sin el reconocimiento de millones de mexicanos. Lejos de considerarse derrotado, el movimiento #Yosoy132 ha permanecido activo en México y en el extranjero, en ciudades de Estados Unidos, Alemania, Francia, Inglaterra, España, Argentina, entre otras, donde radican mexicanos aliados con su causa.
Uno de los grupos más activos ha sido precisamente #Yosoy132Londres, en Inglaterra, que como movimiento ha participado en la organización de conferencias en universidades para hablar sobre los problemas que enfrenta la democracia en México, y está por publicar un libro a partir de una serie de ponencias presentadas en el prestigiado Imperial College London.
Así, el movimiento permanece activo, tal como lo advirtió Osiel González Dávila, miembro de la organización en Londres, en entrevista concedida a The Prisma días después de que Peña Nieto fue proclamado presidente: “el movimiento continuará hasta lograr el empoderamiento de millones de mexicanos cuyas voces no han sido escuchadas en los medios tradicionales de comunicación”.
Wikileaks en México
Como ocurrió en varios países, en México la difusión de los cables diplomáticos del gobierno estadounidense causaron revuelo entre la clase política pero también entre los ciudadanos. Wikileaks otorgó al diario La Jornada más de 3 mil cables diplomáticos secretos, que comenzaron a publicarse desde 2010 y recientemente fueron compilados en el libro Wikileaks en México, Wikileaks en La Jornada.
A partir de los cables se difundieron noticias que estremecieron la política mexicana. Aquí algunos casos:
- El 23 de mayo de 2011, La Jornada publicó que el cable 09MEXICO2778, fechado el 24 de septiembre de 2009, calificaba al priista Enrique Peña Nieto como “ahijado” del ex presidente Carlos Salinas. “Hecho en el molde del anquilosado PRI mexiquense, Peña Nieto no es reconocido precisamente por su transparencia, cuando se trata de amigos y aliados”, indica el documento que fue elaborado tras la visita de funcionarios estadounidenses al Estado de México, cuando Peña era gobernador.
- El 22 de julio de 2011, se difundió el cable 06VATICAN61, que citaba al entonces cardenal de Guadalajara, Juan Sandoval Íñiguez, solicitando al Gobierno de Estados Unidos que frenara el avance de Andrés Manuel López Obrador, en 2006 aspirante presidencial por la coalición de partidos de izquierda.
- El cable 09MEXICO2759, que se publicó en junio de 2011, fue enviado por el entonces embajador estadounidense en México, Carlos Pascual, al Departamento de Estado de EU el 21 septiembre de 2009, en el que implicaba al ex procurador de justicia, Arturo Chávez Chávez, como aliado de grupos del narcotráfico.
- El cable 07MEXICO983, revelado el 25 de mayo de 2011, menciona que Genaro García Luna, secretario de Seguridad Pública en el sexenio anterior, durante el gobierno de Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, ofreció dar a Estados Unidos libre acceso a información de inteligencia mexicana.

It has been promoted in a video that has had extensive coverage since its publication on social networks, in which Mexicans call upon people to join the campaign called #YosoyAssange, #Yosoy132, from various cities around the world, including Chicago, Munich, Paris, London and Mexico City.
The campaign is made up of sympathisers of this cause publishing photos of themselves on social networks with a sign displaying #YosoyAssange, #Yosoy132.
Then, they say, they will pass on directly these messages of support to the Wikileaks founder in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he has resided as a political refugee since the 19th of June 2012.
The campaign in itself is a demonstration of support for Wikileaks on behalf of the movement that shares common objectives regarding freedom of expression.
Also, it is a gesture of gratitude for the support offered by Assange to the movement on the 23rd of February, via videolink to Mexico City, on the occasion of the presentation of the book México in Wikileaks, Wikileaks in La Jornada, edited by the newspaper as a media associate of Wikileaks in the broadcasting of diplomatic cables in North American embassies around the world.
Assange expressed some years ago that the Internet was “an opaque space in politics, now it is the primary means by which people educate themselves, and it controls the ability of a new generation to understand the world, when compared with what went on 20 years ago.”

Permanent Activism
May will mark the first anniversary of activity in Mexico and abroad for the movement #Yosoy132.
In 2012, when the presidential election was about to take place, millions of people, mainly university students, joined this movement to demand transparent and democratic elections, especially in the activities of television, radio and the written press where it was obvious they had an excessive support for the then candidate for the right wing Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Enrique Peña Nieto, current president of Mexico.
Peña Nieto took over the presidency without the recognition of millions of Mexicans. Far from being defeated, the movement #Yosoy132 has remained active in Mexico and abroad, in cities in the United States, Germany, France, England, Spain, Argentina amongst others, where Mexicans live allied to their cause.
One of the most active groups has been #Yosoy132London, in England, which as a movement has participated in conferences in universities to talk about the problems facing democracy in Mexico. It is also about to publish a book based on a series of lectures presented in the prestigious Imperial College London.
This is how the movement has stayed active, explains Osiel González Dávila, member of the organization in London, in an interview given to The Prisma days after Peña Nieto was declared president: “The movement will continue until the millions of Mexicans whose voices are not being heard in the traditional media have been empowered.”
Wikileaks in Mexico
As in other countries, in Mexico the broadcasting of the diplomatic cables of the North American government has caused a stir not only in political classes but also amongst citizens.
Wikileaks granted the newspaper La Jornada more than 3,000 secret diplomatic cables, which started to be published from 2010, and which were recently compiled in the book Wikileaks in México, Wikileaks in La Jornada.
Since the cables were published here is some of the news which horrified Mexican politics:
- On the 23rd May 2011, La Jornada published the cable 09MEXICO2778, dated 24th September 2009, in which Enrique Peña Nieto, member of Mexico City’s PRI, was described as a “protégé” of the former president Carlos Salinas. “Cut from the same cloth by the ossified Mexican PRI, Peña Nieto is not precisely known for his transparency, when it comes to friends and allies”, points out the document which was created after the visit of North American civil servants to Mexico, when Peña was in government.
- On the 22nd of July 2011, the cable 06VATICAN61 was broadcast, which mentioned the then cardinal of Guadalajara, Juan Sandoval Íñiguez, asking the Government of the United States to stop the progress of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the 2006 presidential candidate of the coalition of left wing parties.
- Cable 09MEXICO2759, published in June 2011, was sent by the then North American ambassador in Mexico, Carlos Pascual, to the Department of State of the United States on the 21st September 2009, in which the ex-Minister of Justice Arturo Chávez Chávez, was implicated as an ally of drug trafficking groups.
- Cable 07MEXICO983, revealed on the 25th May 2011, mentions that Genaro García Luna, Secretary of Public Safety in the previous six-year period, during the government of Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, offered to grant to the United States free access to Mexican intelligence information.

You can make it the primary reason for traveling, immersing yourself in another culture, spending two weeks or more focusing on intensive volunteer work, or you can spend as little as half a day working on a community project. Either way, it's still good.
The Cherry Blossom Parade and Festival celebrates the gift of 3000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo to the people of Washington DC in 1912. The spectacular parade takes an entire morning to move along Constitution Avenue. Marching bands from across the nation and around the world fill this grand avenue from 7-17th Streets, with colour and music. Spectacular floats, costumed dance troupes, giant helium ballons, celebrity guests and the stunning Cherry Blossom queen herself all appear in the parade, which gathers donations for charities which give opportunities to disadvantaged young people.
In another few minutes my little band of tourists will rejoin the hordes of other sightseers visiting the National Museum of American History, boarding a tour bus, standing in line at the Capitol. And by day's end, back at the hotel, they will be regretting that they didn't wear sunscreen, or resolving to rise earlier tomorrow to secure a ticket to tour the Newseum.

Translation is NOT simply the transfer of words one by one from one language to another. Machines can do that. What machines cannot do is convey culture, nuances, subtleties, expressions, grammar and appropriateness of the text. I translate more than words - provide well crafted words!
How to order a translation
When a client gets in touch with me, we determine the following information:
Step 1: Project Scope Analysis
Type of work needed- for example, translation, proofreading, transcription, social media moderation or editing work.
Brief - the intended use of the translation and its target audience.
Deliverables - the format of the file to be delivered, method of delivery and applicable deadlines.
Pricing and payment information - final quote, payment terms, and any discounts are confirmed before the start of the project often in a purchase order sent by the client.
Background materials - any reference materials, style guides, glossaries, that need to be adhered to the translation are provided by the client.
Step 2: Formal Approval
Before the start of the project, we will sign off on written document delineating the services to be performed and any applicable conditions. In case of corporate clients, this is usually done through signing a contract and sending a purchase order or scope of work.
Step 3: Research and Communication
If not already provided, I will ask for any background materials, translation memories, previous translations, style guides, or preferred term lists you may be able to provide. Even if none are available, I will search for content that is similar to yours in domain, audience, and purpose and will use it as a blueprint for the translation and as a source for terminology. An example of such content may be websites of companies in your industry.
If no term list was initially provided, I will compile a list of key terms and their proposed translation for the client’s approval. These terms will then be used in translation.
Should any doubts arise during translation, I will compile a list of questions and send it to the client to ensure that my translation reflects the author’s intent.
Step 4: Delivery
The translation will be delivered as soon as possible. I am well aware that my clients are often in a huge rush to have their translations. Translations will always be delivered within the specified deadline.
TERMS OF SERVICE
Invoicing System
English and Spanish languages. Unless agreed beforehand, as general rule, such translations are invoiced by the number of words in your source translation document (English) and never the number of target words (Spanish). Invoices are delivered by email and Clients can access them via their login details.
VAT.
VAT is applicable to all invoices to Clients based in the United Kingdom. Under the reverse charge system, no VAT is applied to invoices to Clients based in the European Union with a valid VAT registration number, or to Clients outside the European Union. This provision may change in the event of a change in legislation.
Delivery Dates
A date for delivery should always be agreed with Evelyn Dench prior to issuing a translation order. Evelyn Dench will always try to be flexible in order to meet a particular urgent deadline, but in general Clients should give as much notice of the need for translation work as possible and relevant to the amount of work involved.
Payment Conditions
Invoices are issued shortly after delivery of translation and by latest end of the month of delivery, and are payable within 30 days of receipt without reminder. Evelyn Dench reserves the right to apply interest to any outstanding amount after 30 days.
Liability
While Evelyn Dench uses its quality control procedure to check and re-check translation for accuracy, content and style before delivery, and every effort is made to impart an appropriate style, no liability can be accepted for any inadvertent inaccuracy in the translation, nor for any fine distinction in tones or grades of vocabulary used, nor writing styles employed. It is understood that a translation is, to some degree, a creative piece of work and one person may choose a term or style that another person may not like.
Property Rights and Copyright
Completed translations do not become the property of the client until paid for in full. Evelyn Dench reserves the right to maintain copies of the translation with or whole or in part, in electronic format, for future reference. Such copies are built into a database of professional knowledge and expertise. It is responsibility of the Client to ensure that the Client has the right to commission the translation of the text sent for translation and indemnifies Evelyn Dench against any breach of copyright law.
Confidentiality
All texts submitted to Evelyn Dench for translation are handheld in confidence and not divulged to a third party, except at the writing request of the original client. This is in line with the Code of Conduct of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Grievances
Clients must make known to Evelyn Dench, in writing, any grievance they may have in regard to a translation delivered as soon as they become aware of such grievance. No grievance will be considered until Evelyn Dench has had the opportunity to study the complaint. Evelyn Dench shall not be held liable for any changes made by the end client, not for any error (such as typing error) that may be considered extremely minor in nature. Should an error prove to be major in nature (mistranslation etc), Evelyn Dench reserves the right to call in an independent adjudicator to assess the extent to which such an error might have affected the end client.
Safeguarding
Completed translations are kept in Evelyn Dench's archives for a minimum of six months from the date of delivery.
Overdue Deliveries
Evelyn Dench will keep the client informed in the unlikely event that the agreed delivery date may not be met.
Force Majeure
Evelyn Dench shall not be liable in the event that and event or situation beyond its control occurs that prevents the translation from being delivered by the agreed time. In such event Evelyn Dench will make every effort to supply the work as quickly as possible thereafter. Force Majeure include power failures, illness, transportation delays, equipment failures (including Internet and e-mail failures) and acts of God such as flood, fire, etc. This list is not exhaustive.

Conditions of Business
'Translation Services' means the rendition of a text from one language into another, as requested by the Client.
Qualifications of Translator
Evelyn Dench is a qualified, professional translator, translating into her native language of Spanish (Latin American variant), with experience in the field from which the text has been taken. In certain extremely urgent cases, where a delay would prejudice the Client's business, and with the agreement of the Client, straightforward and relatively short translations (memos, emails, faxes etc.) may be undertaken in-house. Evelyn Dench is a qualified member of the CIOL.
Technical Subjects
If the field from which the text has been taken is a specific technical field, the Client is urged to provide as much background information as possible, in the form of web sites, glossaries, previous material (where such exist) in order to assist the translator in providing a correct rendition of a text. In cases of doubt, Evelyn Dench will seek to clarify a specific technical term or concept directly with the client. The aims of this is to provide a proper and accurate rendition of the original. However it is understood that even an experienced technical translator may not necessarily be familiar with every detail of the subject. When a client gets in touch with me, we determine the following information:
STEP 1: Project Scope Analysis
Type of work needed - for example, translation, proofreading, transcription, social media moderation or editing work.
Brief - the intended use of the translation and its target audience.
Deliverables - the format of the file to be delivered, method of delivery and applicable deadlines.
Pricing and payment information - final quote, payment terms, and any discounts are confirmed before the start of the project often in a purchase order sent by the client.
Background materials - any reference materials, style guides, glossaries, that need to be adhered to the translation are provided by the client.
STEP 2: Formal Approval
Before the start of the project, we will sign off on written document delineating the services to be performed and any applicable conditions. In case of corporte clients, this is usually done through signing a contract and sending a purchase order or scope of work.
STEP 3: Research and Communication
If not already provided, I will ask for any background materials, translation memories, previous translations, style guides, or preferred term lists you may be able to provide. Even if none are available, I will search for content that is similar to yours in domain, audience, and purpose and will use it as a blueprint for the translation and as a source for terminology. An example of such content may be websites of companies in your industry.
If no term list was initially provided, I will compile a list of key terms and their proposed translation for the client’s approval. These terms will then be used in translation.
Should any doubts arise during translation, I will compile a list of questions and send it to the client to ensure that my translation reflects the author’s intent.
STEP 4: Delivery
The translation will be delivered as soon as possible. I am well aware that my clients are often in a huge rush to have their translations. Translations will always be delivered within the specified deadline.
