Source text - English Encompassing more than one billion, today’s generation of youth is the largest the world has ever known. For some of them, mental-health conditions are the leading causes of adjustment problems, affecting their integration into society and employability. A new report has just been released by UN DESA’s Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) to shed light and raise awareness on this issue.
Although young people are generally considered a healthy age group, 20 per cent experience some form of mental-health condition, including behavioural disorders, which is expected to contribute significantly to disability and lost productivity across the life course.
To address this issue, a new report entitled “Social Inclusion of Youth with Mental Health Conditions”, has just been issued by DSPD based on a background paper prepared by a group of professors at the University of Virginia and John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The main objective of the report is to make use of available research on this topic to raise awareness and to start a global dialogue on how to address mental-health conditions among young people. There is often still considerable social stigma around such conditions and it is hoped that this paper can start a dialogue to discuss and consider how to best address these issues in an open format. The ultimate goal is to ensure that youth are fully integrated in society.
Translation - Spanish Con más de mil millones de personas, la generación actual de jóvenes es la más grande que el mundo haya conocido. Para algunos de ellos, las enfermedades mentales son la principal causa de los problemas de adaptación, lo cual incide en su integración a la sociedad y en su capacidad de empleo. La División de Política Social y Desarrollo (DSPD) de UN-DESA acaba de publicar un nuevo informe que arroja luz y sensibiliza sobre el problema.
Aunque la juventud se suele considerar grupo etario saludable en general, el 20 % padece algún tipo de afección mental, incluso trastornos de conducta, que contribuyen notablemente a la discapacidad y a la pérdida de productividad a lo largo de su vida.
Para abordar el problema, la DSPD acaba de publicar un nuevo informe titulado «La inclusión social de jóvenes con trastornos de salud mental», que toma como punto de partida un documento base preparado por un grupo de docentes de la Universidad de Virginia y de la Escuela de Salud Pública John Hopkins Bloomberg.
El principal objetivo del informe es usar las investigaciones disponibles sobre el tema con el fin de sensibilizar y abrir un diálogo global sobre cómo abordar los trastornos de salud mental de las personas jóvenes. Aún suele existir un considerable estigma social vinculado a la salud mental, y se espera que este trabajo inicie un diálogo que permita analizar e idear la mejor manera de abordar el problema en una modalidad abierta. Source text - English U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern traveled with Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela to Chile, Peru, and Ecuador last week, to discuss climate change with his government counterparts and civil society. Deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation to increase economic growth, cutting greenhouse gasses, and helping climate-vulnerable populations were on the official program.
But the political objective of the trip was to push the Copenhagen Accord — a controversial agreement the United States introduced to UN climate talks in 2009 and that several Latin American countries blocked — in advance of the climate summit in Mexico at the end of 2010.
Stern's South American tour — only three weeks before the next UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiating session in Bonn — shows the increasingly important role of Latin American nations in reaching a climate deal. His itinerary offered a window into how the United States is using the climate debate as part of a larger agenda to secure political influence, trade, and access to resources in the hemisphere.

Source text - English UNV promotes local volunteerism in the Philippines
Former cockatoo poachers have become unpaid wardens in the Philippines, a rare role switch to protect a bird they once endangered. Thanks to the efforts of Peter Widdmann, a German Development Service (DED) volunteer and executive director of the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Programme (PCCP), the birds are being bred in Narra on Palawan's Raza Island in the Sulu Sea. PCCP activists inform the public of the need to preserve the birds and fend off poachers.
It is a result of voluntary effort, says UN Volunteer Merlin Espeso, who collects stories of volunteers in action in the Philippines. "These wardens have done their job with passion and for free for more than a year now," she explains after a recent trip to the island.

Quienes eran cazadores furtivos de cacatúas en Filipinas se han convertido en guardabosques no remunerados, un extraño cambio de rol para proteger a un ave a la que alguna vez pusieron en peligro de extinción. Gracias a los esfuerzos de Peter Widdmann, un voluntario del Servicio Alemán para el Desarrollo (DED, por sus siglas en inglés) y director ejecutivo del Programa de Conservación de la Cacatúa Filipina (PCCP), están criando a estas aves en Narra, en la Isla Raza de Palawan, en el mar de Sulú. El equipo de activistas de PCCP se ocupa de informar al público sobre la necesidad de proteger a las aves y repeler la caza furtiva.

Such girls are bed-objects, the kind of thing one acquires like a hot water bottle, a traveling iron, an electric shoe-shiner, any little luxury of life. It is an advantage to them if they can cook a bit, but they certainly don’t have to talk, in any language. Also they are interchangeable, like unblocked currency or international postal reply coupons. Their value can go up or down, depending on their age and the man currently in possession.
Mildred considered it not a bad life, and if interviewed would have
said in her earnest way, “It’s interesting.”
