Source text - English Adjustment Groups
ADJUSTMENT GROUPS are a series of classes that all new arrivals are able to participate in. At your adjustment group you will learn skills for adjusting to your new surroundings. The groups are led by an experienced facilitator , and will cover these topics:
• Self and Identity: Who am I? What are my strengths?
• Home and Family: How can I relate to my spouse, children, parents, and other family members?
• Community: What resources are in my community that can help me? How can I contribute to my community?
• Employment: What skills do I need to be successful in the American work place?
All adjustment group participants will receive a certificate for participating, and can list their participation on their resume.
How Can I Get Help?
To get help from the Wellness Center, simply set up an appointment to talk with your case manager or the Special Needs Care Coordinator. Your case manager or the Special Needs Care Coordinator can help you learn more about the Wellness Center and will help you find healing through the Wellness Center.
The Story of the Rocks
Imagine that as you go through life you are carrying a bag with you. If something bad happens to you, you pick up a rock and put it in your bag. The rocks build up and build up as your life goes on.
Then, you move to a new place. The new place is stressful, and you are still carrying your bag of rocks. There is no room for any more rocks! It is heavy, and awkward. You are hurting from carrying the rocks for so long.
The Wellness Center can help you to empty your bag of rocks.

Who Should Access the
Wellness Center?
The Wellness Center is available to any refugee or asylee living in the greater Baltimore area. You might benefit from the Wellness Center:
• If you have experienced a traumatic event. Trauma is when you see or experience something that is very disturbing, such as a physical injury or an emotionally painful, distressful or shocking incident. This can have lasting effects.
• If you have upsetting memories, nightmares, or flashbacks.
• If you avoid people or things that reminds you of the past.
• If you have feelings that cause you not to sleep, make you irritable, or have angry outbursts.
If you worry more than usual.
If you ever feel like you might be in danger of hurting yourself or someone else, please call 911. If English is not your first language you can say, “I don’t speak English. [Your language] please.”
What is the
Wellness Center?
Many refugees feel overwhelmed when they first arrive in the United States. Learning a new language, adjusting to a new culture, and memories of the past can all lead to feelings of stress, headaches, and body aches.
The Baltimore Resettlement Center is committed to helping you find wellness in your body, mind, and spirit.
• The WELLNESS CENTER is a program at the Baltimore Resettlement Center where refugees and asylees can seek healing when they are feeling stressed, or sad, or are having nightmares, or are experiencing body aches and pains.
• Through a partnership with Johns Hopkins Bayview Community Psychiatry Program, the International Rescue
Committee, and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, clients can access therapy, adjustment groups, and information to help with the feelings newcomers’ experience.
Someone to Talk To
If you are feeling overwhelmed, there is help available. Through the Wellness Center you can meet with a counselor. A counselor is someone who can help you to feel better when you are feeling sad or stressed.
You are not alone— many people feel stress when they move to a new country. The counselor’s job is to listen to you and help you to find solutions for your
Problems. Your meeting with the
counselor might take place at the
Baltimore Resettlement Center, at the Johns Hopkins Bayview clinic, or at
another site.
There will be an interpreter at the
appointment to make sure you
Understand everything that is being said. Everything you talk about is kept
Confidential, which means that neither the interpreter nor the counselor can tell anyone else about anything you share, without your permission.
