Spanish to English: The Fall in Fertility and the 'Child Gap' in Spain General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Translation - English In order to work out the causes of the ‘child gap’, one must next look at the ‘desires’ of Spanish women, that is to say, to establish which women want to have more children than they actually have. This analysis doesn’t rule out the possibility that, when, for whatever reason, women are, or feel as if they are, unable to produce their desired number of children, they may adapt to their situation using a well-known mechanism, through the development of a counter-preference. This is a way for mothers or potential mothers to reduce the cognitive dissonance that they may suffer when they are frustrated at not being able to see through their reproductive wishes. Women that find themselves in this situation make a virtue of necessity, redefine their desires and readjust their preferences so that they correspond with the realities of their situation.
