Someone will end up losing. It will either be all of those with investments in coal, oil and gas. Or else it will be the climate, the planet and everyone living on it
With their luggage full of gloomy reports, world leaders are set to take centre stage at this year climate summit, COP18, in Doha.
The officials have made their preparations, now it is time for the real negotiations to begin.
The World Bank, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have all warned that if we continue the current investment patterns, coupled with the modest political ambitions for the climate, the globe is headed for a temperature rise of at least four degrees within this century. And then climate change will no longer be within the control of mankind.
The need for reversing this development is becoming urgent.
This is why a group of the largest financial investors in the world immediately before the climate summit´s start sent an unambiguous call to the world leaders, asking them to promptly indicate to the financial markets, which direction the development should take – especially within energy.

Verdensbanken, FN’s Miljøprogram (UNEP), FN’s Meteorologiske Organisation (WMO) og Det Internationale Energiagentur (IEA) har alle advaret om, at hvis vi fortsætter de aktuelle investeringsmønstre samt de beskedne politiske målsætninger for klimaet, styrer kloden mod en temperaturstigning på mindst fire grader inden udgangen af dette århundrede, og så vil klimaforandringerne ikke længere være noget, mennesket har mulighed for at kontrollere.
Det haster med at vende udviklingen.
Derfor sendte en kreds af verdens største finansielle investorer umiddelbart inden klimatopmødets start en utvetydig opfordring til politikerne om, at de hurtigst muligt skal give finansmarkederne et signal om, hvilken retning udviklingen skal tage – især inden for energiproduktion.
