Source text - German Lohnentwicklung 2000 bis 2010: Ein für die Arbeitnehmer verlorenes Jahrzehnt
In den vergangenen zehn Jahren reichten die Lohnsteigerungen in Deutschland kaum, um die Teuerung auszugleichen. Längst sind es nicht mehr nur einzelne Gruppen von Arbeitnehmern, die sich mit einer bescheidenen Lohnentwicklung zufrieden geben müssen. Stagnierende oder sogar rückläufige Reallöhne sind mittlerweile ein weit verbreitetes Phänomen, das Männer und Frauen, Teil- und Vollzeitbeschäftigte, einfache Arbeiten und Akademikerjobs, niedrige und gehobene Gehaltsklassen trifft.
Für ihre Untersuchung werteten die Autoren neue Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panels (SOEP) aus, analysierten Veränderungen der Beschäftigungsstrukturen und legten den Blick sowohl auf die Stundenlöhne als auch auf die monatlichen Erwerbseinkünfte der Arbeitnehmer. Das Fazit: Die Beschäftigungsstrukturen haben sich merklich verändert. Vor allem sind die beruflichen Anforderungen an die Arbeitnehmer gewachsen. Aber obwohl qualifizierte Arbeit zugenommen hat – insbesondere solche Jobs, deren Ausübung ein Studium voraussetzt – blieb die Lohnentwicklung schwach. Die gut qualifizierten Arbeitskräfte kamen im Schnitt nicht einmal auf einen Lohnanstieg, der die Teuerung ausgleichen konnte. Verantwortlich für die schwache Lohnentwicklung ist nicht länger das Ausufern des Niedriglohnsektors. Dieser Bereich wächst der Untersuchung zufolge seit 2006 nicht mehr.
Translation - English Wage Growth 2000 to 2010 – a lost decade for workers
In the past 10 years, wage increases in Germany have barely been able to keep pace with inflation. For a long time now, it is not just individual categories of workers who have had to be content with modest wage growth. Real wages that are stagnating or even declining have by now become a widespread phenomenon that affects men and women, part-time and full-time workers, those in unskilled jobs and in academia and low and high income earners.
For their study, the authors assessed the latest data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), analysed changes in employment structures and looked at the hourly-paid wages as well the monthly earned income of workers. Their conclusion is that employment structures have changed considerably. Above all, the professional demands on workers have grown. However, although skilled work has increased, in particular in those jobs which require a third-level qualification, wage growth remained weak. On average, the well-qualified German workforce has not even received a wage increase that could keep pace with inflation. Responsibility for this weak wage growth no longer lies with the proliferation of the low wage sector. According to the authors' research, this sector has not grown since 2006.

Bio
I have recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Translation Studies in Dublin City University (German to English ). I am a native English speaker and fluent German speaker (First Class Honours in German at BA and MA level) and am eager to commence translation work (on both a paid and volunteer basis) in order to improve and build on my translation and language experience.
During my course, I specialised in translating a wide variety of texts (general, economic and technical) from German into English, obtaining First Class Honours in each category. In addition, I worked with translation software such as SDL Trados and MultiTerm.
I work as a volunteer translator with Translations for Progress and have provided translations for SAGE Net, a German aid organisation working in South Africa.
Prior to my Graduate Diploma in Translation Studies, I worked for over 6 years in the Higher Education Authority, the statutory planning and funding body for higher education in Ireland. This work has given me an insight into many public policy issues which I am keen to buold on. I also have experience of working within university and business environments (see my CV for further details). I am an extremely self-motivated and professional individual who works well under pressure, with proven communication and writing skills and welcome the ability to use my own initiative.
