Source text - English When language develops in autism, it doesn’t develop in the typical way, out of communication. It can develop from an obsessional activity, like a computer game or a video that they've watched. They copy and echo the language they've heard and that’s gradually broken down into more usable phrases. In typical development, language builds up from speech sounds, babbling, and eventually into speech. In autism, the process is often the reverse; you start with whole little phrases or sentences and then they're broken down. We look for something that we can use, for example, when we learn to say "time to go home", which is an important phrase to them, then we may teach them "time to..." as a general thing. Time to go to lunch, time to do math, and so on. So they gradually get familiar with things which we can use in different situations. But we also often get language problems in addition to the communication problems that are there. That will affect because communication is the key to developing language and because that key isn't there for autism. If there is any problem in acquiring it, it will be much harder to develop and all aspects of language and all aspects of communication are affected. That includes, gesture, posture, how close to stand to somebody, which is called proxemics. They get that wrong all the time, they get too close to strangers, they invade the space of other people, but equally, their own sense of their own space is very wide, so when someone comes into that they get very anxious and upset. People which may be three, four feet away but for them it feels like someone has come right close to you.
We saw with prosopagnosia that facial expressions can even alter the identity of people as far as they are concerned so that it's a very frightening, complex and confusing situation.
They don't recognize emotions, so they don't recognize their expression, and pronouns are of particular difficulty. People used to talk about reversal of pronouns. It's not really reversal. The thing is that pronouns are there to signify your role in a conversational exchange and, if you don't understand the nature of the conversational exchange, you have no reason to use pronouns to signify that, so their meaning is obscure.
Anything that might be regarded as pragmatics, that's the social uses of language, is a problem. The use of idioms, which are very culturally dependent, relies on them learning them, but it takes time to learn that. They can learn literal language but of course in an idiom they don't have a literal meaning; the literal meaning is very misleading. So they have to learn that the idiom is a set, a phrase. However, learning when it applies, when it doesn't, when those words mean their literal meaning and when they have the special meaning, it's a great puzzle.

Source text - English When Coronavirus Care Gets Lost in Translation
Medical interpreters must now work remotely, multiplying the challenges for front-line doctors and non-English-speaking patients.

Recently Dr. Alister Martin faced his patient, a Hispanic man who spoke no English, and broke the news that he would have to be intubated. Struggling to keep his voice calm, Dr. Martin, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, suggested that the man call his wife. And he told the patient, a bus driver and a father of three, that he should give her his love and say goodbye, just in case.
This exchange is now part of the fabric of Dr. Martin’s daily routine, but it never gets easier. Making it all the more difficult is that each piece of information is repeated at least twice: Most of Dr. Martin’s Covid-19 patients don’t speak English, so he communicates through a language interpreter on the phone.
Because personal protective equipment is in short supply in hospitals across the country, few clinical interpreters are able to work in person with Covid-19 patients, as they normally would. Most language interpretation is done remotely. Communicating through an interpreter doubles or triples the length of a medical exchange, adding new confusion and anxiety to situations that are already stressful for patients and their families. And the conditions of Covid-19 care — the rapid pace at which cases evolve, the desire of hospital workers to limit the duration of their exposure to patients — create numerous obstacles to effective interpretation.
“We are seeing an overall degradation in the quality of care given to patients who don’t speak English as their first language,” Dr. Martin said.
Dr. Martin said the coronavirus outbreak has multiplied the logistical barriers for medical interpretation. The hospital rooms are loud, filled with buzzing oxygen tanks and urgent staff conversations. Everyone is masked, their voices muffled. Medical workers are trying to stay six feet away from their patients whenever possible.
“Someone’s oxygen can be dropping and I have to get an interpreter on the phone, wait on hold, put in an access code, tell them where I am,” Dr. Martin said. “It’s hard for the patient. Imagine you’re in a loud room with a mask blowing oxygen in your face at 15 liters a minute and you feel crummy. You can’t comprehend things as much.”
Typically, he explains to patients the precise medical process before intubation and instructs them to think of their happiest memories, what he calls “the vacation before sedation.” With an interpreter on the phone, he and his team are pressed to use their words more sparingly.
Interpreters, too, say, that their quality of work suffers when they communicate with patients remotely instead of in person and can’t use body language or read facial expressions. “Little things like a tap on the shoulder or holding the patient’s hand usually makes a big difference,” said Cinderella Lee, a Cantonese interpreter for Sutter Health in San Francisco.
Ms. Lee said that under normal circumstances, patients who aren’t English-language proficient have family members help with translation and serve as advocates. But because hospitals have barred visitors, patients are on their own. Some patients Ms. Lee works with are elderly and “don’t understand why their loved ones don’t visit them,” she said.
David Velasquez, a medical student at Harvard, said he has often been called on to translate for Spanish-speaking patients while on clinical rotations. Having witnessed lapses in communication with patients who are not proficient in English, he fears for his immigrant family members outside Los Angeles, one of whom has already contracted the new coronavirus.
“Most doctors don’t speak their language,” Mr. Velasquez said. “I’d worry about the discharge process. It’s one thing letting them know what they have to do in the hospital. But it’s another thing to educate patients on precautions to take after leaving, and how to protect their loved ones.”
The challenges in treating Covid-19 patients who are not English-proficient are especially troubling to physicians because of the disproportionate hospitalization rates for blacks and Hispanics.
Hispanics make up 34 percent of the coronavirus deaths in New York City, according to data released by the city last week, but just 29 percent of the city’s population. City leaders have suggested that this partly reflected Hispanic overrepresentation among essential workers; a study from the city comptroller found that minorities make up 75 percent of the front-line work force, including grocery clerks and janitors.
Massachusetts has released only limited racial and ethnic data on the virus, but large clusters of infection have been reported in immigrant-heavy Chelsea and in Boston’s predominantly black, Latino and immigrant communities, including in Hyde Park and Mattapan. Roughly 40 percent of Covid-19 inpatients at Massachusetts General Hospital are Hispanic, according to hospital officials, 80 percent of whom are primarily Spanish-speaking.
“This has become a black and brown epidemic across the country,” said Dr. Joseph Betancourt, chief equity and inclusion officer at the hospital. “That’s all the more reason we have to pay attention to language.”
At Cambridge Health Alliance in Massachusetts, nearly half of the 126,000 patients in its primary care system have limited English proficiency. The Alliance has 100 staff interpreters who usually work in its emergency rooms and community clinics. Vonessa Costa, director of multicultural affairs and patient services, said that roughly 99 percent of the interpreting work is now remote, with the interpreting staff fielding upward of 1,300 calls per day.
Those circumstances place tremendous stress on the medical interpreters, Ms. Costa said, especially those who live in Boston’s immigrant communities hard-hit by the outbreak. Last week, she heard from a distraught interpreter who had just spent 45 minutes on the phone helping a young Spanish-speaking woman communicate with hospital staff about two critically ill family members, her partner and her mother.
“There is a trauma in interpreting trauma,” Ms. Costa said. “Quite a few interpreters in our department have family members who have been hospitalized too. They’re shell shocked by the situations they’ve had to interpret and the devastation in their communities.”
Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, a physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said that the coronavirus pandemic is exposing, and exacerbating, a pre-existing condition in the country’s health system: disparities in care for non-English-speaking patients. A 2015 study from the Joint Commission showed that patients with limited English proficiency experienced adverse health outcomes at markedly higher rates than English speakers.
“We knew that limited-proficient-English patients had decreased access to care, more emergency department visits, longer inpatient stays and worse clinical outcomes,” Dr. Rodriguez said. He added that he hoped the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on Hispanic populations would push medical institutions to consider the ways that language barriers affect patient care.
Some medical institutions have already begun to rethink their interpreting services amid the coronavirus outbreak. Dr. Betancourt said that in the last month Mass General has created a registry of front-line staff members who speak multiple languages. The hospital now aims to assign a Spanish-speaking doctor to each medical team whenever possible, so that patients can rely on their physicians to interpret rather than having to use remote services.
Ms. Costa said that Cambridge Health Alliance has identified all patients who require in-person rather than remote interpretation, such as individuals who are hard of hearing and do not use American Sign Language, and has allocated personal protective equipment for their on-site interpreters. The health care provider has begun offering discharge instructions in Arabic, Nepali and other languages, expanding beyond the Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole translations already on offer. And they are considering distributing microphones to patients when necessary to amplify their words for interpreters.
But as Ms. Costa’s organization races to better its interpreting services, she worries about the millions more patients across the country who are non-English-proficient and struggling to access care. “A pandemic is not the time to build working systems,” she said.

Recentemente, o Dr. Alister Martin olhou para seu paciente, um homem hispânico que não falava inglês, e deu a notícia de que ele precisaria ser entubado. Conversas assim agora são parte da rotina diária do Dr. Martin, mas nem por isso ficam mais fáceis. O que torna ainda mais difícil é que cada informação é repetida pelo menos duas vezes: a maioria dos pacientes com Covid-19 do Dr. Martin não fala inglês, então eles se comunicam através de um intérprete pelo telefone.
Por causa da falta de equipamento pessoal de proteção nos hospitais do país todo, poucos intérpretes clínicos conseguem atender pessoalmente pacientes com Covid-19, como normalmente fariam. A maioria das interpretações é feita remotamente. Comunicar-se através de intérpretes dobra ou triplica a duração de uma interação médica, somando confusão e ansiedade novas a situações que já são estressantes para pacientes e seus familiares. E as condições do tratamento da Covid-19 — o ritmo acelerado de evolução dos casos, o desejo dos trabalhadores de limitar a duração de exposição a pacientes — criam inúmeros obstáculos a uma interpretação eficaz.
"Estamos vendo uma degradação geral na qualidade do tratamento dispensado a pacientes que não falam inglês como primeira língua", disse o Dr. Martin.
O Dr. Martin falou que o surto de coronavírus multiplicou as barreiras logísticas da interpretação médica. As salas dos hospitais são barulhentas, cheias de sons de cilindros de oxigênio e conversas urgentes da equipe. Todos usam máscaras, as vozes abafadas. Trabalhadores da área médica estão tentando ficar a um metro e meio de distância dos pacientes quando possível.
"O oxigênio de alguém pode estar reduzindo e eu tenho que conseguir um intérprete ao telefone, aguardar na linha, inserir um código de acesso, informar onde estou", disse o Dr. Martin. "É difícil para o paciente. Imagine-se em uma sala cheia de barulho usando uma máscara soprando oxigênio no seu rosto a 15 litros por minuto e se sentindo péssimo. Não tem como você entender as coisas da mesma forma".
Tipicamente, ele explica aos pacientes o procedimento médico exato antes da entubação e os instrui a pensar em memórias felizes, o que ele chama de "férias antes da sedação". Com um intérprete ao telefone, ele e sua equipe estão pressionados a usar as palavras com mais moderação.
Os intérpretes também dizem que a qualidade do trabalho padece quando se comunicam com pacientes de forma remota ao invés de pessoalmente e usando linguagem corporal ou lendo expressões faciais. "Pequenas coisas, como um tapinha no ombro ou segurar a mão do paciente, em geral, fazem uma grande diferença", diz Cinderella Lee, uma intérprete de cantonês do Sutter Health, em São Francisco.
Lee diz que, sob circunstâncias normais, os pacientes que não são proficientes em língua inglesa têm membros da família auxiliando na tradução e servindo como defensores. Mas como os hospitais barraram visitantes, os pacientes estão sozinhos. Alguns pacientes com quem Lee trabalha são idosos e "não entendem porque as pessoas queridas não os visitam", ela disse.
David Velasquez, um estudante de medicina de Harvard, disse que costuma ser chamado para traduzir para pacientes de língua espanhola durante rotações clínicas. Mas enquanto a organização de Vonessa Costa corre para melhorar seus serviços de intepretação, ela se preocupa com os milhões de outros pacientes no país que não são proficientes em inglês e que estão sofrendo para acessar o sistema. "Uma pandemia não é o momento de construir sistemas de trabalho", ela disse.

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar a possibilidade de trabalhar o ensino da língua materna através da didatização de gêneros textuais em sala de aula como forma de proporcionar ao aluno o desenvolvimento de suas capacidades de linguagem, considerando sempre o seu contexto de aprendizagem e a cultura na qual está inserido. Por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica acerca do tema, ancorada principalmente nos estudos de Bakhtin (2011), Bronckart (1999/2009), Marcuschi (2010) e Schneuwly e Dolz (2013) esta pesquisa pretende primeiramente apresentar os conceitos referentes ao interacionismo sóciodiscursivo, gênero textual e capacidades de linguagem. Após, apresenta uma prática desenvolvida inicialmente na Suíça denominada de sequência didática, propondo uma reflexão a respeito da importância de proporcionar ao aluno atividades que privilegiem o uso real/social da língua em situações comunicativas e, consequentemente, tornando-o capaz de agir criticamente sobre o mundo. Os resultados mostram que a proposta de abordagem da sequência didática nas aulas de língua portuguesa constitui um instrumento importante no sentido de potencializar a capacidade do aluno de ler e escrever criticamente, propiciando um maior domínio das suas capacidades de linguagem e aumentando suas chances de sucesso em diferentes situações de interação.

Translation - English Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the possibility of teaching mother tongues through didactic methods for textual genre in the classroom as a way to offer students the opportunity to develop their language capacities, always considering their learning context and the culture in which they are included. Based on a bibliographic review about the theme, anchored mainly on the studies of Bakhtin (2011), Bronckart (1999/2009), Marcuschi (2010), and Schneuwly and Dolz (2013), this research wants firstly to present the concepts related to sociodiscursive interactionism, textual genre and language capacities. Then, it reports a practice developed initially in Switzerland called didactic sequence, which suggests reflection about the importance of offering students activities that focus on the real/social use of language in communicative situations and, consequently, enabling them to act critically in the world. The results show that the approach proposal of didactic sequence in Portuguese classes comprises an important instrument once it improves students’ capacities of reading and writing critically, allowing larger domain of their language capacities and increasing their chances of success in different interactional situations.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in languages. I remember translating songs from Portuguese to English looking up word by word in a dictionary. Therefore in college I was already doing translations for friends and colleges for their abstracts or small texts. My main activity at the time was teaching, but I really loved translating.After I graduated, I got a job as a freelancer to translate news for a Brazilian fashion magazine. That was when I saw that I wanted to pursue this career. I got a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics in 2010, but I did not want to work in that area either because I was profoundly interested in translation. So, I consider that 2011 is my first year as a professional because that was when I got my license to work as a Sworn Translator in Brazil. This has provided me with the opportunity to improve my skills in translating. I work mainly for individuals who want to live or study abroad and need to have their documents translated. I also have translated several legal documents, such as court decisions and agreements for companies.In 2017 I took a Specialization Course in Translation, which helped me organize better my work. It showed me easiest ways of doing research for terminology, organize glossaries and calculate estimates, among other things.Lately I have been attending Creative Writing courses, so I have developed skills that meet the requirement to work in transcreation, which is a field I am deeply interested in. I have had short stories selected to be part of two books and later this year my first book, with twenty short stories, will be published.
