Welkom bij InScience
InScience - Dutch International Science Film Festival was vorig jaar alleen nog maar een idee. Nu staat er een festival waar meer dan vijftig films vertoond worden. Waar ruim tweehonderd wetenschappers, regisseurs en producenten van over de hele wereld samen komen en praten over film en wetenschap. Waar meer dan twintig kunstenaars met hun werk de relatie verkennen tussen kunst en wetenschap. InScience is een platform voor de ontmoeting tussen publiek, film, wetenschap, kunst en bedrijfsleven. Die ontmoeting draagt niet alleen bij aan de versterking van stad en regio, maar verwerft landelijke betekenis. InScience is werkelijkheid geworden dankzij de Economische Raad Nijmegen, die het idee omarmde. Het was aan het InScience-team en aan een grote groep betrokken vrijwilligers om een droom werkelijkheid te laten worden. De bezoeker mag beoordelen of we daarin zijn geslaagd, of de eerste editie van InScience inderdaad de belofte in zich draagt om het festival uit te laten groeien tot een traditie. Geniet van vijf dagen festival, geniet van InScience.

Film
De films die je ziet op InScience zijn ingedeeld in drie categorieën: jaarprogramma, themaprogramma Licht en een special BIO·FICTION. Bovendien wordt het programma aangevuld met een filmblok over drones, een programma met korte films van Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen en een filmconcert. Het filmprogramma bestaat verder uit een mix van speelfilms, korte films en documentaires. Elk filmblok wordt aangevuld met een verdiepingsprogramma. Door middel van debatten, experimenten en spannende vraagstukken zoekt InScience de wetenschappelijke en kunstzinnige diepte op.
Big Ideas
Tijdens Big Ideas volg je de spannendste ontwikkelingen in de wetenschap. Elke festivaldag is er in samenwerking met Radboud Reflects een Big Ideas waar een toonaangevende wetenschapper of kunstenaar vertelt over zijn ,of haar werk en in gesprek gaat met het publiek.
Lezingen
Gedurende het festival zijn er verschillende lezingen van sprekers zoals wetenschapsjournalist George van Hal en natuurkundige Karel van Acoleyen. Schuif tussen het film kijken door aan!
DIY Lab
In de Mariënburg kapel zijn elke dag DIY Labs waarbij je zelf in de schoenen van een wetenschapper kan gaan staan. Trek die witte jas maar aan en laat je wegwijs maken als onderzoeker.
Meet the expert
In samenwerking met de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda kun je van donderdag tot en met zondag in het Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis - Mariënburgkapel experts ontmoeten en hen het hemd van het lijf vragen. Ga één op één met wetenschappers, kunstenaars en filmmakers in gesprek en leer alles over de mens, maatschappij, de wereld en het heelal.
Experimenten
Kom uit de bioscoopstoel en neem zelf deel aan de wetenschap! Buig je over een microscoop, maak bliksem of word zelf onderdeel van een experiment. In het Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis - Mariënburgkapel beleef je iedere dag iets nieuws.
Expositie & performance
Art fans opgelet! De InScience Kunstexpositie laat je met een frisse blik en nieuwe ideeën naar wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen kijken. Wees onderdeel van deze indringende kunstervaring.
Expertmeeting
Voor experts uit verschillende vakgebieden vinden er expertmeetings plaats waarin wordt gereflecteerd op actuele onderwerpen.
Talkshow | Aan tafel bij InScience
In samenwerking met mediapartner NTR is er de dagelijkse Talkshow Aan tafel bij InScience onder leiding van Isolde Hallensleben in het café van LUX. Elke dag staat er een ander thema centraal. Bekende kunstenaars, wetenschappers en filmmakers schuiven aan.
InScience Junior
Ook de jonge wetenschapsfreaks kunnen veel ontdekken op InScience. Doe mee aan de Junior Wetenschapsquiz met live experimenten, spannende proeven en leuke filmpjes of kom naar Junior Big Ideas en vraag natuurkundige Diederik Roest het hemd van het lijf over het heelal en zwarte gaten.
Food
In het café van LUX staat de kaart in het teken van InScience. Kun jij je zintuigen nog vertrouwen wanneer geur, kleur en textuur anders zijn dan je gewend bent? Proef ook het speciale InScience biertje. Ook in de Mariënburgkapel kun je de hele week terecht voor een drankje.
Awards & Awardshow
De films uit het jaarprogramma maken kans op awards in drie categorieën: de NTR Audience Award ter waarde van € 2.500, de Youth Award en Student Jury Award ter waarde van € 500. In het jaarprogramma worden de allerbeste wetenschapsfilms van het afgelopen anderhalf jaar vertoond. Met dertig films in alle varianten, van documentaire tot fictie en van speelfilm tot korte film, laat InScience het hele wetenschappelijke spectrum zien.
InScience toont de schoonheid van wetenschap, kunst én film. De combinatie zie je terug in een grote verscheidenheid aan films over zeer uiteenlopende onderwerpen. Wetenschappers en filmmakers zorgen voor verdiepende talks en verbreding bij de films.
The Creeping Garden

De slijmzwam is het zwarte schaap van de biologie. Hoewel er duizend verschillende soorten slijmzwammen bestaan weten we maar weinig over dit eigenaardige organisme. Een gestileerd psychologisch drama over de wereldberoemde fotograaf en ‘godfather van de cinema’ Eadweard Muybridge. Muybridge was als fotograaf in het pre-cinema tijdperk geobsedeerd door beweging. Nog steeds kent iedereen zijn reeks fotootjes van een galopperend paard. De obsessie voor zijn werk had vreselijke gevolgen voor zijn huwelijk. Op 17 oktober 1874 vermoorde hij de minnaar van zijn vrouw en werd de laatste Amerikaan die werd vrijgesproken met het vonnis justifiable homicide.

Gondry vangt deze rivier van gedachtes in animaties die hij zelf met de hand tekent. Deze speelse documentaire is een toepasselijk eerbetoon aan een van de grote, vrije denkers van nu.

De film is een reisverslag met hypnotiserende beelden, afgespeeld op verschillende snelheden.

NTR is benieuwd naar uw mening. Als een echte Nils Holgersson vliegt onderzoeker Thomas Lameris met de Brandgans mee naar een broedgebied in Arctisch Rusland. Hij weet waar zijn ganzen heen gaan, maar niet welke route ze nemen en hoe ze hun reis plannen. Daarom heeft Thomas vorig jaar veertig ganzen met een GPS-logger uitgerust. Dat apparaat slaat elke vijf minuten exact de locatie op waar de gans zich bevindt. Nu gaat Thomas terug naar Rusland om de ganzen met loggers terug te vinden en de data te downloaden. De Kennis van Nu gaat mee op expeditie en verblijft drie maanden in een oud Sovjet-weerstation op de toendra, voor het echte veldwerk.

Met zijn filosofische concept van Next Nature wil hij laten zien dat onze technische omgeving zo complex en autonoom is geworden dat we een nieuwe menselijke natuur aan het creëren zijn.

Naar aanleiding van de documentaire die 's middags is vertoond wordt er in het café van de kapel verder gefilosofeerd met hersenwetenschapper Peter Hagoort van de Radboud Universiteit, zelf te zien in de documentaire, en Piet Steenbakkers, hoogleraar Spinoza-studies aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.

Choreograaf Arno Schuitemaker gebruikt spiegelneuronen als inspiratie voor de dansvoorstelling The Fifteen Project | DUET, uitgevoerd door Manel Salas Palau en Mitchell-Lee van Rooij. Door onze spiegelneuronen beleven we de bewegingen van de dansers ongemerkt mee. Na de voorstelling vertelt Arno Schuitemaker over zijn nieuwsgierigheid naar de lichamelijke relatie tussen danser en toeschouwer en stelt de vraag: hoe verhoud ik me tot de ander?

Precies een eeuw geleden voltooide Einstein zijn relativiteitstheorie die onze kijk op ruimte en tijd drastisch heeft veranderd. In deze lezing legt theoretisch natuurkundige Karel Van Acoleyen van de Universiteit Gent deze wondermooie theorie uit en laat hij zien hoe de relativiteitsheorie een belangrijke rol speelt in tal van films. Verwacht dus een trip langs zowel de science als de fiction van gewichtloosheid, tijdreizen, zwarte gaten, wormgaten en nog veel meer.
Licht en magnetisme: een briljante combinatie

Ooit met een lens of prisma gespeeld met licht? Dan heb je gezien hoe licht en materie elkaar beïnvloeden, maar wist je ook dat licht en magneten op elkaar inwerken? Spinozaprijswinnaar Theo Rasing, hoogleraar Experimentele natuurkunde aan de Radboud Universiteit, vertelt alles over zijn baanbrekende onderzoek naar de beïnvloeding van magneten door laserlicht. Hij ontwikkelde een techniek om magnetische deeltjes met behulp van een laser van pool te doen veranderen. Deze techniek leidt tot unieke nieuwe mogelijkheden zoals ultrasnelle gegevens opslag op een harde schijf.
Trans-species tribunal

Are there limits to what we ought to do in science and art? How would you judge these limits? This is what we will investigate in the Trans-species Tribunal. The short film Pig Child by Lucy Campbell, about a woman who infuses her embryo with pig dna, will be the introduction. Lucas Evers from Waag Society introduces the "Trust me I'm an artist" project in which human and animal dna was combined in a real art project. He will do this together with Slovenian artist and scientist Špela Petrič, who participated in that project. The ethical limits of this kind of research will be discussed.

Kunstenaar ontmoet wetenschapper

Het Besiendershuis is keer op keer op zoek naar bijzondere samenwerkingsvormen in de stad, met het doel kunst, cultuur, cultuurhistorie, kennis en ondernemerschap op verrassende wijze aan elkaar te verbinden. Tijdens InScience vindt er een ontmoeting plaats tussen kunstenaar en wetenschapper. De uitkomst is onduidelijk, maar daarmee des te spannender. Kunstenaar Sanne Willemsen en psychiater Anne Speckens van Radboudumc Mindfulness gaan met elkaar in gesprek en op zoek naar mogelijkheden van samenwerking. Tijdens de Award uitreiking op zondagavond vertellen ze over hun ontmoetingen. Hoe kunnen de wetenschap en de kunst elkaar versterken? Sanne Willemsen toont haar boek 'Come on down and see the idiot right here' als onderdeel van de expositie van InScience. Ze het verhaal van mensen die in de ogen van veel mensen buiten de maatschappij vallen.Het biedt de kijkers een unieke blik in de wereld van deze mensen en in de manier waarop zij hun leven leiden.

Innovatieve makers en initiatieven spreken vanavond onder andere over technologie en nostalgie, architectuur en videomapping en digitale fabricage.

In de Mariënburgkapel zijn elke dag DIY Labs waarbij je zelf in de schoenen van een wetenschapper of kunstenaar kan gaan staan. Trek die witte jas maar aan en laat je wegwijs maken als onderzoeker.
Bewerk analoge beelden

Quick and dirty: in deze hands-on film workshop maak je je eigen animaties direct op het filmmateriaal (celluloid), zonder tussenkomst van een camera. Laat prachtige abstracte animaties ontstaan en wek geluid door te tekenen, schilderen, etsen, krassen, bleken of schuren op stroken van 16mm film. Esther Urlus, mede-oprichter van filmwerkplaats WORM Rotterdam, laat je precies zien hoe het werkt.
Ontleed het brein

Hoe beweegt een rat? En waar zit zijn instinct? Stroop je mouwen op en slijp je scalpel. In dit DIY Lab ontdek je al snijdend de complexe structuur van het rattenbrein. Tineke van Rijn en haar team van het Donders Instituut leidt de deelnemers langs verbindingen en kwabben in de grijze massa.
Schilder als Rembrandt

Leer schilderen als de oude meesters. In de documentaire Hollands Licht onderzoeken de filmmakers de unieke lichtval in klassieke Nederlandse schilderwerken van onder andere Rembrandt en Vermeer. Diederik Grootjans leert je in dit DIY Lab de basis van hun technieken.
Ontdek micro-organismen

De hersenen zijn het meest complexe en cruciale orgaan van de mens. Het Donders Instituut geeft je een kans op een kijkje onder de hersenpan. Aanschouw een menselijk brein op sterk water en bekijk structuren van een rattenbrein onder een microscoop. Als je durft, mag je de kleine grijze massa zelfs aanraken.

NEMO aan tafel

Alles wat we zien, is licht. En tegelijkertijd zien we veel niet. Deze proefjes van NEMO geven je de kans om met licht te spelen. Ontdek hoe wit daglicht eigenlijk uit alle kleuren van de regenboog bestaat. Bundel licht om de kracht te versterken en verbuig het om je zicht te vervormen.

Zonder dat je het merkt, schieten er heel de dag atoomkernen door je heen. Deze miniscule deeltjes komen met hoge snelheid vanuit de ruimte neer op aarde. Het vonkenvat zet hun energie om in bliksemschichten. Maak zelf een bliksemschicht, druk op de knop en zie wat er gebeurt!

Blijf jij rustig in stressvolle situaties? Neem hier de proef op de som. Betreed in je eentje een griezelig, donker huis. Blijf je zenuwen echter wel de baas. Door rustig te blijven kun je het duister namelijk verdrijven. Dit computerspel speel je niet alleen met een controller in je hand, maar ook met een EEG op je hoofd. Ervaar hier zelf hoe serious games met neurofeedback kinderen met angststoornissen kunnen helpen.

Welcome to InScience
Last year, the InScience – Dutch International Science Film Festival was still only an idea. Now, we have a festival where more than fifty films will be screened, where over two hundred scientists, directors and producers from all over the world will meet to talk about the world of film and science, and more than twenty artists will explore the relationship between art and science in their work. InScience is a meeting platform for the public, film, science, art and the business sector. This interaction not only contributes to strengthening our city and region, but has also gained national significance. InScience has become a reality thanks to the Economische Raad Nijmegen, which wholeheartedly embraced the idea. It was then up to the InScience team and a large group of dedicated volunteers to make this dream a reality. Visitors can judge whether our endeavours were a success and whether the first edition of InScience has what it takes to become an annual tradition. Enjoy our five-day festival. Enjoy InScience.

The films you will see at InScience are divided into three categories: annual programme, Light theme programme and a special BIO FICTION. The programme will also include a film block about drones, a programme with short films from the Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen and a concert film. The film programme includes a mix of feature films, short films and documentaries. Each film block is accompanied by a side programme of debates, experiments and exciting talks that explore issues from both an academic and artistic angle.
Big Ideas
Big Ideas presents the most exciting developments in science. In collaboration with Radboud Reflects, one Big Idea is explored each day of the festival, with a leading academic or artist describing their work and entering into a dialogue with the audience.

The Creeping Garden

On 17 October 1874, he killed his wife’s lover and was the last American to be acquitted on a verdict of justifiable homicide.

NTR is interested in your opinion. Like a true Nils Holgersson, researcher Thomas Lameris flies with barnacle geese to a breeding ground in Arctic Russia. He knows where his geese are headed, but doesn’t know the route they take and how they plan their trip. For that reason, Thomas equipped 40 geese with GPS trackers last year. Every five minutes, the apparatus saves the exact location of the goose. Now Thomas is returning to Russia to find the geese with the trackers and to download the data. De Kennis van Nu is going along on the expedition and will spend three months in a former Soviet weather station on the tundra for the real fieldwork.

The Donders Institute will be offering a glimpse under the cranium at the human brain, the most complex and crucial organ we have. Drop by and examine a real human brain in formaldehyde. Compare its structures to a rat's brain under the microscope. And, if you're in a daring mood, you can even touch the small grey mass.

Have you ever seen bioluminescent bacteria? Have you always wanted to know what microorganisms are on your hands? Are there any red bacteria? What exactly does beer contain? Drop by, peer through a microscope and learn about microbiology, the science that makes the invisible visible.
This programme is offered in collaboration with the Soehngen Institute of Anaerobic Microbiology.

Can a computer program compose new music? DarwinTunes, a collaborative project between scientists and artists, was created for that very purpose. Simply select some beautiful fragments of music and give those fragments the chance to evolve into a life of their own. Music through evolution!

Do you stay calm in stressful situations? Put yourself to the test. Enter a creepy dark house alone, but don't let your nerves get the better of you. By staying calm you can dispel the darkness. To play this computer game, you'll not only hold a controller, but also place an EEG recorder on your head. Find out first-hand how serious games with neuro feedback can help children with anxiety disorders.

Have you always wanted to see a robot in action? Students in the Artificial Intelligence degree programme at Radboud University and artist Rob van der Burg, will hold a demonstration presenting robots of many different types and sizes.

Animethic
Iris Sijbom
LUX, first floor
The Animethic photo exhibit focuses on cooperation between humans, nature and animals. It also conveys the interdependence between humans and animals. Using photography, Iris Sijbom enters and portrays the domain where humans have complete control over animals: the laboratory. Sijboom's photos depict laboratory animals as resilient individuals, and raise awareness of the conditions behind laboratory walls.

Would you have ever thought you could interact with plants one day? Swing by and check out Botanicus Interacticus. Launched as an experiment by Disney Research Lab, this project features Touché technology that allows users to do just that!
