Der Wedding kommt“ ist eine in Berlin seit gefühlten Jahrzehnten rezitierte Phrase, die dem Ortsteil im Bezirk Mitte einen unmittelbar bevorstehenden Entwicklungssprung andichtet. Ob der Wedding, dessen wirtschaftlicher wie sozialer Status von der Senatsverwaltung als durchschnittlich niedrig bis sehr niedrig bewertet wird, inzwischen zur Szenelage zählt, ist diskutabel. Der Mythos jedenfalls lebt – zwischen Ex-Rotaprint-Gelände (Bauwelt 24.2016) und dem abgerissenen Kulturzentrum Stattbad. Nun ist hier ein Ateliergebäude entstanden, das bereits durch seine eigenwillige Erscheinung internationale Strahlkraft verheißt.
(K)ein Wohnbau
Die Initiatorin Olivia Reynolds, lange im Londoner Immobilienbereich tätig und seit einigen Jahren Betreiberin des Non-Profit-Kunstraumes LoBe im Wedding, spürte zwischen Fähnchen-Autohändler, Wohnmobilstellplatz und Kletterhalle ein ehemaliges Bahngrundstück auf und trat mit dem Wunsch nach Beplanung an die Architekten Brandlhuber, Emde und Burlon heran. Auf dem Wunschzettel der Bauherrin standen „kreativgewerbliche“ Ateliernutzung, Ausstellungsflächen und Gastronomie, dazu die Förderung von Gemeinschaft und Öffentlichkeit. Das alles unter der Ägide einer Verordnung von 1958, die auf dem Grundstück keinen Wohnungsbau gestattet. Schade eigentlich. Bemerkenswerterweise jedoch schreibt die gebaute Antwort der Architekten dem Haus, neben den genannten Anforderungen, eine Wohnnutzung geradezu strukturell ein. Auch der Brandschutz und die Energieeinsparverordnung sind in allen Punkten für einen Wohnungsbau eingehalten. Dadurch drängt sich die eigentlich nicht statthafte Zweckentfremdung geradezu auf. Inwiefern hier neben der Arbeit auch geschlafen, gekocht, geliebt und gelebt wird, bleibt natürlich eine individuelle Entscheidung der Mieter.
Die Lust am Zwang
Der monumentale Betonberg, der sich zwischen S-Bahn-Gleisen und der sanft ansteigenden Böttgerstrasse erhebt, verweigert sich Bewertungskriterien die auf Ästhetik im klassischen Sinne abzielen. Die Proportionen sind weder vom goldenen Schnitt noch einer Säulenordnung abgeleitet. Auch edle Materialien sucht man vergebens. Hier ist, bei minimalem (Kosten-) Aufwand der maximale Raum das Ziel gewesen. Raum in Reinform oder, wie die Architekten sagen, veredelter Rohbau.
Leichtbauwände aus Gipskarton- und Seekieferplatten teilen die Geschosse im Innern in jeweils vier durchgesteckte Nutzungseinheiten, die sich raumhoch verglast nach Nordosten und Südwesten öffnen. Die Einheiten selbst sind ohne trennende Wände offen gestaltet. Eine grobe Zonierung ergibt sich lediglich durch Raumtiefen zwischen elf und sechsundzwanzig Metern, die im eher lichtarmen Zentrum eine Bildschirmarbeitsplatznutzung nahelegen. Zwei Betonkerne nehmen Installationsschacht und Nasszellen auf und erschließen per Aufzug jeweils zwei Einheiten. Die Haupterschließung jedoch erfolgt über zwei imposante Außentreppen auf der Rückseite, die die Stockwerke über die ihnen vorgelagerten Terrassen verbinden. Mit über sechs Metern nutzbarer Tiefe schließen diese über raumhohe Schiebetüren unmittelbar an den Innenraum an. Im Erdgeschoss mit doppelter Raumhöhe und eingezogener Galerieebene finden eine größere Büroeinheit, Gastronomie und ein Kunstraum Platz.
Im Gegensatz zur artverwandten flandrischen Schule mit ihrer nonchalant-farbenfrohen Einfachheit, bricht sich beim Terrassenhaus das Rohe als brachiales Statement aus WU-Beton Bahn. Den unter der harten Schale verborgenen Reiz zu erspüren erfordert eine Lesart, die auf ein wiederkehrendes Motiv im Werk von Brandlhuber+ verweist – die konsequente Methodik im Umgang mit Regelwerk. Auch beim Terrassenhaus scheint jede Entscheidung auf dem Verständnis und der Anwendung von Baurecht zu fußen. Beim Ausloten des Interpretationsspielraums geht es aber nicht um Geschmacksfragen, sondern um die räumliche Optimierung hinsichtlich Großzügigkeit, Kosten und möglicher Aneignung. Schon die Kubatur des Terrassenhauses zeigt die Abhängigkeit von Regel und Gestalt. Die extrem tiefen Grundrisse begründen sich im §34 des Baugesetzbuches und seinem Verweis auf die Eigenart der näheren Umgebung- der direkte Nachbar, ein U-förmig um einen Innenhof angelegter, typischer Berliner Altbau, gibt die Gebäudetiefe vor. Die dann in den unteren Geschossen zurückspringenden Fassaden reduzieren die fast vierzig Meter Tiefe einerseits auf ein nutzbares Maß, erzeugen gleichzeitig aber auch einen überdachten, halböffentlichen Vorplatz an der Straßenseite. Die als geschlossen vorgegebene Bauweise ermöglicht eine maximale Grundstücksausnutzung durch eine Grenzbebauung mit Brandwand, deren deutlich ablesbaren Versprünge vom nicht geradlinigen Grenzverlauf vorgegeben sind. Die Geschosshöhen und die Gebäudehöhe resultieren schließlich aus den beiden markanten Außentreppen, die wiederum exakt den Vorgaben der DIN 18065 für baurechtlich notwendige Treppen entsprechen.
Das Private ist politisch
So sehr aus jeder Betonpore das Gesetz atmet, so sehr geht das Terrassenhaus an anderer Stelle auf maximale Distanz zu gängiger Praxis und Lehrmeinung. Optisch vermeintliche Problemstellen wie ganz pragmatisch sichtbare Leitungsführung hinter der Glasfassade sind nicht wegdetailliert, sondern so offensiv appliziert, dass es zartbesaiteten Planerseelen die Tränen in die Augen treiben dürfte. Die unter den Terrassen als Begleitdämmung ausgeführte, mineralische Innendämmung ist lediglich so weit in den Raum geführt wie bauphysikalisch nötig und endet auch genau dort mit sichtbarer Kante. Weder Dach noch Terrassen haben eine zusätzliche Entwässerung, sondern lassen das Wasser einfach über die leicht geneigten Flächen kaskadenartig in eine Sammelrinne im Erdgeschoss fließen.
Auch die Differenzierung öffentlicher, halböffentlicher und privater Bereiche weicht erheblich von gewohnten Standards ab. Das Terrassenhaus provoziert eine Nähe, die man entweder will oder lernen muss. Durch den Verzicht auf ein straßenseitig zugängliches, geschlossenes Treppenhaus und die nur mit Schlüssel zu nutzenden Fahrstühle erzwingt die Architektur eine Verschaltung der Außenbereiche. Sämtliche Terrassen und die Dachfläche sind öffentlich zugänglicher Raum, was permanente Verhandlung erfordert. Besucher des Yoga-Studios im ersten Obergeschoss binden so für die Dauer ihres Besuchs ganz selbstverständlich ihre Hunde auf der Terrasse an und das Dach mit wunderbarem Rundumblick dient wiederholt der Kiezjugend als Treffpunkt. Zudem sind die Terrassen nicht parzellenweise abtrennbar, da sie Teil des Fluchtweges zwischen den beiden Treppen sind. So entfacht die grobe Zonierung durch Pflanzkübel seitens der Nutzer einen begrüßenswerten Begrünungswettbewerb. Zumindest ein schmaler Streifen von privatem Außenraum kann durch Zuziehen der schweren Vorhänge aus Geotextil erzeugt werden. Die silberbedampften Stoffe dienen dem Sonnenschutz und sind nur von innen leicht durchsichtig.
Heroin chic oder Role model?
Die Architektur des Terrassenhauses stellt homogene Nutzungszuweisungen à la Flächennutzungsplan in Frage und schafft Möglichkeitsraumfür Lebensformen, denen die Trennung von Arbeiten und Wohnen fremd ist und deren Grenze zwischen Öffentlichem und Privatem fließend verläuft. Auch lässt sich am Haus erörtern, wie viel oder wie wenig Ausbaustandard tatsächlich nötig ist. Der aktuellen, innerstädtischen Bebauung wünscht man, dass das Atelierhaus als Agent Provocateur den ein oder anderen zum zivilen Ungehorsam anstiftet.
Durch das Haus weht aber auch der Wind von urbanem Glamour, hier kondensieren soziale Prozesse der kreativen Klasse. Tatsächlich ist trotz brutalistischer Anarcho-Attitude ein Gewächshaus für Monokultur entstanden. Längst ist das Ruppige gesellschaftsfähig, gar zur erwartbaren Kulisse einer elitären Nutzerschaft geworden, die sich ins raue Umfeld integriert wie ein Wärmedämmverbundsystem. Stellt sich die Frage, ob diese Klientel dem Typus Atelierhaus immanent ist oder ob er auch für eine breitere, heterogenere Nutzerschaft erschließbar wäre. Von der Brunnenstraße mit Bauherr und Architekt in Personalunion zum Terrassenhaus mit externer Bauherrschaft hat es fast zehn Jahre gebraucht. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass eine Architektur, der eine Nutzerheterogenität räumlich eingeschrieben ist, nicht so lange auf sich warten lässt.

(Not) A Residential Building
The affirmation that "Wedding is on its way" has been a heartfelt catchphrase in Berlin for decades, implying that the district in the borough of Mitte is about to take a long overdue developmental leap forward. However, it is debatable whether Wedding, a district with averagely low to very low economic and social status as rated by the Senate Administration, now ranks among the trendier locations. At any rate, the myth lives on – between the former Rotaprint site (Bauwelt 24.2016) and the demolished public baths cultural center. Now a studio building has been built that is already causing an international stir due to its idiosyncratic aesthetics.
(Not) a residential building
The initiator Olivia Reynolds, who for a long time worked in the property sector in London and for several years operated the non-profit art space LoBe in Wedding, discovered a disused railway lot between a pennanted car dealer, a camper van site and a climbing gym and approached architects Brandlhuber, Emde and Burlon to ask for a planning concept. The developer's wish list included "creative commercial" studio use, exhibition spaces and catering facilities, as well as a contribution towards the community and the public. All this under the aegis of a decree dating from 1958, which does not allow housing on the property. More’s the pity. Remarkably, however, by virtue of its structural properties the architectural firm's realised response ascribes residential use to the building as well as the above-mentioned requirements. All aspects of the fire protection and the energy saving regulations for housing construction are also respected. As a result, the actually non-authorized misuse virtually suggests itself. The extent to which people sleep, cook and carry on their lives in addition to working there is naturally up to the tenants themselves.
Delight in constraint
A love of constraint
The monumental concrete mountain rising between rapid-transit railway tracks and the gently ascending Böttgerstrasse refutes evaluation criteria aimed at aesthetics in the classical sense. The proportions are derived neither from the golden section nor classical order. Noble materials are also conspicuous by their absence. Rather, the goal was to achieve a maximum of space with a minimum of (cost and) effort. Space in its purest form or, as architects are wont to say, refined shell construction.
In the interior, lightweight walls made of plasterboard and maritime pine slabs divide the floors into four usable units, which open up to the north-east and south-west. The units themselves are open plan, without any dividing walls. Rough zoning results only through room depths of between eleven and twenty-six meters, which suggest VDU workplace utilization in the rather low-light center. Two concrete cores house the installation shaft and wet cells and give access to two units per lift. The main access, however, takes place via two imposing exterior staircases at the back, connecting to the floors above via the terraces in front of them. With more than six meters of usable depth, they are directly connected to the interior via floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. On the ground floor, with double room height and retracted gallery level, there is space for a larger office unit, catering unit and an art space.
In contrast to the related Flemish school with its nonchalant, colorful simplicity, the Terrassenhaus breaks new ground as a brute statement in waterproof concrete. To sense the charm hidden beneath the hard shell requires a reading that refers to a recurring motif in Brandlhuber’s work and shows the consistent methodology in dealing with rules and regulations. Likewise at the Terrassenhaus, every decision seems to have been based on the understanding and application of building law. When exploring the scope for interpretation, it is not a matter of taste, but concerns spatial optimization in terms of generosity, costs and possible appropriation. Even the cubature of the Terrassenhaus demonstrates the dependence on rule and form. The extremely deep floor plans are based on section 34 of the Building Code and its reference to the peculiarity of the immediate vicinity – and the building depth is dictated by the directly neighboring old U-shaped building around a courtyard, so typical of Berlin. On the one hand, the façades, which are then recessed on the lower levels, reduce the almost forty-meter depth to a usable level, while at the same time creating a covered, semi-public forecourt on the street side. The predetermined closed construction form allows a maximum use of land through an enclosure construction with a fire wall, the clearly legible step formations are given by the non-linear borderline. The storey heights and the height of the building ultimately result from the two striking external staircases, which in turn correspond exactly to the requirements of DIN 18065 for steps required by building law.
The personal is the political
As much as the law breathes from every concrete pore, on the other hand the Terrassenhaus also distances itself as far as possible from common practice and doctrine. Problem areas which would presumably present optical problems, such as the very pragmatically visible wiring behind the glass façade, are not detailed away, but so aggressively applied that they surely bring tears to tender-hearted planners' eyes. The mineral interior insulation under the terraces designed as supplementary insulation is only applied as far into the room as required by building physics and abruptly ends there, with a visible edge. Neither the roof nor the terraces have any additional drainage, but simply allow the water to cascade over the slightly inclined surfaces into a collecting channel on the ground floor.
The differentiation of public, semi-public and private sectors also deviates considerably from the usual standards. The terraced building provokes a proximity that the user either desires or must become familiar with. By dispensing with a closed staircase accessible from the street side and making the lifts only usable with a key, the architecture enforces interconnection between the outside areas. All terraces and the roof area are open to the public, which requires permanent negotiation. Visitors to the yoga studio on the first floor find it is entirely natural to tie up their dogs on the terrace for the duration of their visit, and the roof with a wonderful panoramic view repeatedly serves as a meeting place for the local youths. In addition, the terraces cannot be separately partitioned as they form part of the escape route between the two staircases. The rough zoning has sparked a welcome greening competition on the part of the users in the form of plant pots. At least a narrow strip of private outdoor space can be created by drawing the heavy geotextile curtains. The silver-coated fabric is used for sun protection and is only slightly transparent from the inside.
Heroin chic or role model?
The Terrassenhaus architecture calls into question homogenous usage assignments according to the land use ordnance and creates space for ways of living to which the separation between work and life is alien and where the boundaries between public and private are blurred. The building also invites discussion on the extent to which a certain standard of fixtures and fittings is actually necessary. One can only hope for the current inner-city development that the studio building will act as an agent provocateur to incite someone or other to commit civil disobedience.
However, the wind of urban glamour also blows through the building, where social processes of the creative class condense. In fact, despite a brutalistic anarchic attitude, a greenhouse for monoculture has emerged. The rough has long been socially acceptable, even the expectable backdrop of an elite user base that integrates into the harsh environment like a composite thermal insulation system. The question arises as to whether this clientele is inherent in the studio building type or whether this could also be developed for a broader, more heterogeneous user base. It took the best part of ten years from the talks between the developer and the architect in Brunnenstraße to the realisation of the Terrassenhaus with the external contractor. It is to be hoped that architecture that spatially enlists user heterogeneity will not be long in coming.

Anti-Viren-Software hat ein ganz bestimmtes Ziel: Das Erkennen von möglichst vielen Schädlingen. Um dieses zu erreichen, müssen AV-Programme viele Dateiformate verstehen und verarbeiten. Dies wird dadurch erschwert, dass Schädlinge oft auf diverse Tricks zurückgreifen, um länger unentdeckt zu bleiben.
Diese Tricks führen dazu, dass die Formate auch jenseits der Spezifikation unterstützt und verstanden werden müssen. Bei der Inspektion des Programm-Codes zeigte sich, dass die ungewöhnliche Vielzahl von Lücken auf eine Kernfunktion der AV-Programme zurückzuführen ist – das Parsen von Dateiformaten.
Was ist Parsing? Um binäre Dateien interpretierbar und verständlich zu machen, werden diese in Blöcke und Strukturen unterteilt. Um Dateiformate verstehen zu können, muss eine Applikation diese Datei wiederum in Blöcke und Strukturen aufteilen, das sogenannte „Parsing“. Durch Fehlannahmen beim Parsen entstehen Konstellationen, die es ermöglichen, Programmcode einzuschleusen und zur Ausführung zu bringen.

Anti-viral software has a very specific goal: the recognition of as many potentially damaging elements as possible. In order to achieve this, AV-Programs have to be able to understand and process many different data formats. This is made all the more difficult by the fact that the infiltrators resort to a variety of tricks in order to remain undiscovered for longer.
These tricks mean that the formats also have to be supported and understood above and beyond specifications. On inspecting the program code it became clear that the unusually high number of gaps is attributable to a central function of the AV programs.
What is parsing? In order to make binary data interpretable and comprehensible, they are divided into blocks and structures. To understand data formats, an application in turn has to sort the data into blocks and structures. This process is known as “parsing“. Through errors during parsing, constellations arise which allow program code to be introduced and activated.

Source text - German Die zeitliche Konzentrationsentwicklung im Entnahmebrunnen wird mit Hilfe eines Particle- Tracking-Verfahrens ermittelt. Jedes Partikel repräsentiert hierbei das gleiche Elementarvolu- men Grundwasser. In einem ersten Schritt werden unter Berücksichtigung von Brunnenan- strömung, Grundströmung und hydraulischer Vor- und Quereinflüsse die Startpositionen von Partikeln rückgerechnet, welche den Brunnen zum Zeitpunkt der Probennahme erreichen. Aus der Verbindung der Startpunkte ergeben sich die Isochronen für die Probennahmezeit- punkte. Im nächsten Schritt wird den Partikeln die für ihre jeweilige Ortskoordinate vorgege- bene Konzentration zugeordnet. Die Konzentration im Brunnen zum jeweiligen Probennah- mezeitpunkt ergibt sich aus dem Mittelwert der Partikelkonzentrationen. Aus den berechneten Konzentrationswerten der einzelnen Probennahmezeitpunkte ergibt sich der Konzentrations- durchgang im Brunnen. Für jede Konzentrationsverteilung werden die Werte für die maximale Schadstoffkonzentration sowie die resultierende Schadstofffracht angezeigt.
Translation - English Temporal concentration development in extraction wells is determined by means of a particle tracking method. Each particle represents the same elemental volume groundwater. In a first step, hydraulic fore- and cross-influences at the starting positions of particles which reach the well at the time of sampling are recalculated, taking into account well incident flow. From the compound of the starting points, the isochrones for test sampling times points are derived. In the next step, the particles are associated for their respective local coordinate given concentration. The concentration in the wells of every test sample time results from the mean value of the particle concentrations. From the calculated concentration values of each of the sampling points in time, the concentration pathways in the well are derived. For each concentration distribution, the values for the maximum contaminant concentration and the resulting contaminant load are displayed.

Source text - Spanish III. La actividad del objeto y la simbolización.
A partir de los planteos de Winnicott (1945) acerca de que las condiciones que posibilitan la subjetividad tienen fuertes raíces en el sostén, Roussillon destaca dentro de este marco el modo de presencia del objeto, en tanto la actividad del mismo se revela como un elemento clave para promover en el sujeto procesos primarios de simbolización (1999).
Esta conceptualización sobre la actividad del objeto - participación activa del analista— ha sido desarrollada por Schkolnik (2007) como una importante contribución para el análisis de pacientes neuróticos con elementos escindidos, que remiten a carencias representacionales originadas por fallas en los procesos primarios de simbolización. Ante estas situaciones, la autora plantea la necesidad de que el analista, como objeto que habilita a simbolizar, ofrezca al paciente representaciones que promuevan caminos de ligazón psíquica, y por lo tanto, de contención, frente al desborde de lo escindido - lo pulsional - no simbolizado. En este sentido, las representaciones primarias irían dando lugar a la represión originaria - entendida esta en cuanto ligazón de representaciones -, la cual se iría constituyendo como elemento fundante del aparato psíquico.
La propuesta de un analista que ofrece representaciones frente a aspectos que escapan a la posibilidad de simbolización del paciente por sí mismo, me resulta una perspectiva interesante para pensar ciertos recursos técnicos que reconozco en el trabajo con los tempranos a los que hago referencia. Ante un funcionamiento precario, ofrecer palabras para representar aquello que no llegaba a organizarse en el niño, como experiencia personal, adquiría un valor organizador del mundo interno, y habilitaba caminos para trabajar en la construcción de un espacio y una trama psíquica. Además, en ciertas ocasiones, las palabras que ofrecía el analista respondían a una expectativa del paciente para organizar su mundo perceptivo, que se volvía así identificable y compartible.
Javier, de dos años y ocho meses, no habla. El neuropediatra descartó un trastorno orgánico. Los padres cuentan que revolotea por la casa sin rumbo. Lo ven sobregirado, les preocupa que se golpea contra lo que tiene delante y sigue de largo como si no sintiera nada. En la primera entrevista, Javier llega en brazos de su papá, quien lo anima a acercarse al material de juego que está ubicado en el suelo. Sentada frente a él, noto que tímidamente toca algunos elementos.
Con la disposición de generar cierto contacto, los voy nombrando mientras él los va tocando: «Las hojas… los autitos… la lana… Querés conocer estas cosas que hay acá – le digo – vamos a jugar juntos para que tú te sientas mejor…».
A partir de entonces, Javier comienza a mirarme a los ojos, y aunque no es algo sostenido, aun así, su gesto me resulta motivador. Luego, señala activamente de uno en uno los marcadores, y yo voy nombrando los distintos colores. Sus gestos son acompasados por mis palabras. Intenta hablar en ciertas ocasiones, pero emite sonidos irreconocibles, que ni el padre ni yo logramos entender. Sin embargo, en determinado momento, cuando él va sacando y yo voy nombrando los animales de un canasto, lo escuchamos decir, aun con dificultad: «Jugamos…». El padre y yo nos miramos sorprendidos: la palabra, el verbo, emerge en el encuentro con otro, en un vínculo libidinal.
Luego Javier se dirige a la ventana y mira hacia afuera. Lo acompaño. Vemos juntos el paisaje; él señala y yo le ofrezco palabras que lo habilitan a identificar su percepción del mundo.
Sin embargo, cuando el lenguaje verbal aún no se ha instalado como medio de comunicación ni de creación de un mundo representacional, me pregunto cuánto verdaderamente capta el niño del sentido de las palabras. En este aspecto, me resulta interesante la connotación que Target atribuye a la palabra del analista en referencia a pacientes borderline, en los que la precariedad representacional también está en juego. En tales situaciones, esta autora considera «las interpretaciones como parte de un diálogo conducido mayormente en forma no verbal o en cierto sentido preverbal, en el que el paciente, como un bebé con la figura parental, oye las palabras, comprende no tanto el sentido de las mismas como la actitud, la intención y la tonalidad emocional… las palabras son sonidos que informan al bebé sobre cómo se siente el otro en relación con él…» (Target, 2013). En la misma línea, y en referencia a pacientes con síntomas psicosomáticos, en los cuales el afecto no se expresa en términos de palabras o de símbolos, Killingmo (2006) plantea que más que el contenido semántico de las interpretaciones, es la propia entonación y la cualidad del sonido de la voz del analista lo que trasmite al paciente el significado emocional de las experiencias.
Translation - English III. Object activity and symbolisation.
Based on Winnicott's (1945) assertion that the conditions that enable subjectivity are strongly rooted in holding, Roussillon highlights the mode of presence of the object within this framework, insofar as the activity of the object is revealed as a key element to promote primary processes of symbolisation in the subject (1999).
This conceptualisation of object activity – the active participation of the analyst – has been developed by Schkolnik (2007) as an important contribution to the analysis of neurotic patients with split elements, which refer to representational deficits caused by failures in the primary processes of symbolisation. In such situations, the author suggests the need for the analyst, as the object that enables symbolisation, to offer the patient representations that promote paths of psychic linkage, and therefore of containment, in the face of the overflow of the split – the impulsing factor – that is not symbolised. In this sense, the primary representations would give rise to the original repression, understood to be an association of representations, which would be formed as the founding element of the psychic apparatus.
It is interesting to reflect upon the possibility than an analyst can offer representations of aspects that the patient is unable to symbolise themselves, and there are certain technical resources which I recognise in the work with the infants to whom I refer. In the face of unstable functioning, words can be offered to represent those things which have not yet become organised in the child through personal experience. This would take on an organising value for the inner world, and facilitate ways of working on building a psychic space and a psychic framework. Moreover, on certain occasions the words offered by the analyst would respond to the patient’s expectation to have their perceptual world organised and thus rendered identifiable and sharable.
Javier, two years and eight months old, does not speak. The neuropaediatrician has ruled out an organic disorder. His parents say he flits around the house aimlessly. They see that he is overwrought and worry that he bumps into things and carries on walking on as if he doesn't feel anything. In the first interview, Javier’s father carried him in and encouraged him to go and play with the equipment on the floor. Sitting opposite him, I notice that he shyly touches some of the elements.
Showing willingness to generate some contact, I name them as he touches them: "The leaves, the little cars, the wool. You want to get to know these things here,” I say to him. “Let's play together so that you feel better."
From then on, Javier starts to look me in the eye, and although the gesture is not sustained, I still find it encouraging. He then actively points to the markers one by one, and I name the different colours. I accompany his gestures with words. At times he tries to speak but makes unrecognisable sounds which neither the father nor I can understand. However, at a certain point, when he is taking animals out of a basket and I am naming them, we hear him say, still with difficulty: "We play". The father and I look at each other in surprise: the word, the verb, has emerged in an encounter with another person, in a libidinal attachment.
Then Javier goes to the window and looks out. I go with him. We look at the view together; he points and I offer him words that enable him to identify his perception of the world.
However, when verbal language has not yet become established as a means of communication nor to create a representational world, I wonder how much the child really grasps the meaning of words. In this respect, I find interesting the connotation that Target attributes to the analyst's word in reference to borderline patients, whose representational world is also unstable. In such situations, Target considers interpretations to form part of a dialogue that is for the most part conducted non-verbally or in some sense pre-verbally. The patient, much like an infant with a parental figure, hears the words but does not so much understand their meaning as the attitude behind them, the intention and the emotional tonality. The words are sounds that inform the infant about how the other feels in relation to her (Target, 2013). In the same vein, and with reference to patients with psychosomatic symptoms, in whom affect is not expressed in terms of words or symbols, Killingmo (2006) argues that rather than the semantic content of the interpretations, it is the very intonation and sound quality of the analyst's voice that conveys the emotional meaning of the experiences to the patient.

Hi,
My mother tongue is English. I've been living in Spain for the past 27 years. Before that I lived in Berlin for 6 years, where I aquired das Grosse Deutsche Sprachdiplom.
I worked as a language teacher, trilingual secretary, translator and copywriter for over 20 years.
Now entirely self-employed, I'm looking to build up a body of work and excellent feedback on ProZ.
My hobbies and passions, apart from writing, are cycling, horse-riding and music.
I hold a BSc in psychology and am becoming increasingly specialised in this field. Also, my talent and predisposition for literary translation means I will always accept tasks in this genre.
