Fatih Sultan Mehmed İstanbul’u fethettiği zaman Galata Cenevizlilerine vermiş olduğu Ahidnâme, İstanbul’da yaşayan Rumların da dâhil olduğu gayrimüslimlerin temel hak ve hürriyetlerinin korunması ve toplum barışının tesis edilmesini ifade eden tarihin önemli vesikalarından biridir. İslam devletleri hukukuna göre, savaş yoluyla fethedilen topraklarda hükümdar, isterse başka dinlere ait mabetleri yok eder ve gayrimüslimleri sürgüne gönderebilirdi. Ayasofya’nın ve bazı kiliselerin camiye tahvil edilmelerinin hukuki dayanağı bu hükümdür. Fatih Sultan Mehmed, şehir ile ilgili bütün tasarruf hakkı kendisine ait olduğundan İstanbul’un büyük bir payitaht olması maksadıyla gayrimüslim halkı yerinde tutma ve onların mevcut mabetlerini de kendilerine bırakma gibi bir tercihte bulunmuştur. Bazı ulema ister sulh ister savaşla alınsın, esas itibarıyla bütün tasarruf hakkı hükümdara geçtiği için bu gibi uygulamaların yapılmasında bir beis görmemişti.

THE RELIGIOUS LIFE OF ISTANBUL'S GREEKS

When Sultan Mehmed II conquered Istanbul, one of the important historical documents he released to the Galata Genoese was Ahitname indicating the establishment of social peace and protection of basic rights and liberties of non-Muslims including Istanbul's Greeks. According to the law of Islamic states, the ruler could destroy the shrines of other religions in the land conquered by war and could exile non-Muslims if he wanted to. It was a legal provision that Hagia Sophia and some churches were converted into mosques. As all the ownership of the city belonged to him, Mehmed the Conqueror preferred to keep non-Muslim population and abdicate their existing shrines to them, as Istanbul was a great capital city. Some ulema did not see any harm these kind of implementations as all ownership right was transferred to the ruler in essence.

Farklı dönemlerde biri diğerinden daha ziyade kullanılmakla birlikte tarihî dönemlerin ulaşımı kara, deniz, nehir ve göller üzerinden sağlanırdı. Dünyanın en güzide kentlerinden biri olan İstanbul ise, nadide topoğrafik yapısıyla hem kara hem deniz ticaret ve ulaşımında tarihin her döneminde hareketli ve renkli bir merkez olmuştur. İstanbul’la deniz arasındaki tarihî ilişkinin çeşitli boyutlarda ve değişik duruşlarda görüntüsü şehrin tarihini ve biçimlenişini aksettirir. Deniz, dönemin karayollarının zor ve nispeten güvensiz oluşu sebebiyle daha rahat, hızlı ve vazgeçilemez bir ulaşım yoluydu. Osmanlı Devleti, askerî seferler dışında ticaret ve yolcu nakli amacıyla da denizyolunu kullandı. XIX. yüzyıldan önce, yolcular için müstakil seferler düzenlemekten ziyade ticari eşyanın yanında yolcu taşınması uygulaması yaygındı. Yakın mesafeler arasında ise sadece yolcu taşıma uygulaması vardı. Denizyolu taşımacılığı buharlı gemilerden önce küreklerle donatılmış yelkenli gemilerle yapılırdı. Büyük liman kentleri denizyolu güzergâhlarının merkezinde bulunurdu ki, bu merkezlerin en önemlilerinden birisi, uzak ve yakın pek çok sefere varış ve kalkış noktası olan İstanbul’du.
Translation - English n every era, transportation has been of great significance for societies; transportation has an important role not only in economic, but also in social and cultural developments. At different periods of time transportation has taken place on seas, rivers and lakes, or on land. Thanks to its unique topography, Istanbul, one of the world’s leading cities, has been a lively and colorful hub throughout every period of history for both land and maritime trade and transport. The examination of the relationship between Istanbul and the sea over a large span of time reflects the history of the city, as both the city and the sea underwent various changes and transformations. Maritime travel was a convenient, rapid and indispensable way of transportation compared to the relatively insecure and troublesome land roads of the time. The Ottoman State used the seas for trade and passenger transport, as well as for military expeditions. Before the nineteenth century, instead of arranging separate trips for the passengers, the widespread practice was to carry passengers on the same vessel as commercial goods. However, when the distances were not far, only passengers boarded the ships. Prior to the invention of steamships maritime transport depended on schooners equipped with oars. Major port cities were located on center points of important shipping lanes; one of the most important centers was Istanbul, which was the destination and departure point for journeys from distant and nearby locations.
