Dernière partie des portraits des enfants vivant au Foyer Tierra de Vida (Sentinelles en Colombie) qui accueille des victimes de maltraitances ou d'abus sexuels. (voir Sentinelles nº 245 et nº 246)
Aujourd’hui, treize enfants et adolescents vivent dans notre foyer de protection à Minas, dans un cadre propice en pleine nature. Dans cet environnement bienveillant, ils sont entourés par une équipe de collaborateurs qui les aident à panser leurs blessures et à s’épanouir. Ils y bénéficient d'une alimentation équilibrée, de soins, d'appuis scolaires et d'activités ludiques. Parallèlement au collège, certains adolescents suivent une formation professionnelle.
CAMILA, 15 ans
Elle a été accueillie au Foyer en 2006 pendant un an, puis à nouveau depuis 2011. Camila est une jeune fille d'humeur toujours joyeuse. Elle aime participer aux activités, mais manque d'entrain pour les tâches scolaires. Elle est spontanée dans sa façon d'être et de penser, ce qui lui a parfois causé des problèmes avec certains camarades. Elle reconnaît cependant ses erreurs et essaie de changer. En général, elle a une bonne relation avec tous les enfants du Foyer.
Camila se soucie peu de son aspect personnel. Elle est tantôt vêtue comme une gamine négligée, tantôt comme une adolescente provocante, ce qui peut lui attirer des ennuis. Pour de nombreuses filles qui ont été abusées sexuellement, certaines limites restent souvent floues. Camila fait des efforts et demande des conseils pour retrouver son estime de soi qui a été mise à mal.
Tous les vendredis en fin d'après-midi, Camila a hâte de retourner dans sa famille. Sa grand-mère est une redoutable matrone qui n’a d’yeux que pour ses fils et petits-fils. Camila réalise toutes les tâches ménagères. Mais ça lui est égal car elle aime être avec son père, ses frères et ses cousins. Sa mère vit de la prostitution et n'est pas réapparue depuis des années.
Interrogée sur ce qu'elle voudrait faire plus tard, Camila a répondu: «Balayer et nettoyer pour gagner des sous». Nous lui avons expliqué qu'aucun travail n'est déshonorant mais que si elle a la possibilité d'étudier, elle pourra trouver un travail en accord avec ses goûts et ses capacités. Alors, elle a dit qu'elle voudrait être chanteuse. À chaque spectacle donné par les enfants au Foyer, Camila développe une gestuelle calquée sur les shows télévisés tout en chantant en play-back, sans aucune timidité. Elle rêve de gloire et de paillettes. (exergue?)
Nous espérons qu'elle pourra travailler son projet de vie et comprendre l'importance d'étudier pour être autonome.
YULIANA, 12 ans
Yuliana est en première année scolaire. Elle n’allait presque jamais à l’école avant de venir vivre au Foyer, en décembre 2015. Durant toute son enfance, elle devait faire le ménage pendant que sa mère allait mendier en ville avec ses trois petits frères. Tous les vendredis soirs, le père obligeait Yuliana à l’accompagner de bar en bar jusqu’à l’aube. Elle le ramenait alors à la maison, ivre-mort. L’année passée, il est décédé d’une crise cardiaque. La rumeur dit qu’il a reçu une décharge électrique dans une mine mal entretenue.
Parler du comportement de Yuliana au Foyer est assez complexe car elle s'efforce un jour de bien se tenir, de ne pas être grossière et de respecter ses camarades, et fait tout le contraire le lendemain. Pour Yuliana, difficile de respecter les règles lorsqu’à la maison, seuls les insultes et les coups étaient la norme. Elle se montre manipulatrice et entêtée, surtout quand quelque chose ne lui plaît pas. Cette capacité à manœuvrer l’a en quelque sorte sauvée de la violence de son père. Elle crée quelquefois des conflits avec ses camarades de chambre car elle a l'habitude de s'emparer sans permission de leurs affaires.
En décembre, sa maman a subi une opération délicate et Yuliana est restée quelques jours avec elle pour l'aider. Nous pensions qu'à son retour au Foyer, elle aurait oublié nos conseils pour une bonne cohabitation. C'était mal connaître Yuliana. Dès lors, elle se montre respectueuse et il est rare qu’elle soit à l’origine d’une discorde.
Yuliana est très intelligente et possède une bonne mémoire. La découverte du jeu de Memory a été une révélation, elle a battu tout le monde d’emblée. Les professeurs lui ont fait passer un examen pour lui donner la chance de passer en deuxième année. Elle n'a malheureusement pas réussi à cause de l'écriture et de la lecture. L'année prochaine, il est possible qu’elle fasse deux années scolaires en une. C’est notre souhait à tous, surtout le sien, car se retrouver dans la même classe que son petit frère de six ans qui vient de commencer l’école n’est bien sûr pas motivant. Nos appuis scolaires seront renforcés.
Les trois frères de Yuliana
Stiven, 3 ans, Juan Pablo, 4 ans, et Jean Carlos, 6 ans, reçoivent un accompagnement, de jour comme de nuit, à la maison avec leur maman. Ils ont aussi passé quelques jours au Foyer suite à l'opération de leur mère. Les débuts furent difficiles, surtout pour Stiven, très attaché à sa maman. Peu à peu, les frères ont appris à reconnaître et à apprécier chacun des espaces et styles de vie du Foyer. Ils ont appris à manger seuls et proprement, à se baigner et à s'habiller. Ils mangent bien et débordent d'énergie dans les activités ludiques. Pour celles-ci, le travail avec eux fut très intense. Quand une éducatrice était seule, ils absorbaient toute son attention. Dès le rétablissement de leur maman, ils sont repartis vivre avec elle. Seul Jean Carlos vient tous les matins au Foyer pour des appuis scolaires. La maman est très possessive, surtout avec Stiven, à qui elle consent tout.
NATALIA, 12 ans
Elle n'avait que 4 ans lorsque nous l'avons accueillie au Foyer. Elle souffrait de malnutrition, d'abandon, de violence physique et verbale. Depuis, elle est en perpétuelle recherche d’attention. Natalia a deux forts traits de caractère: elle peut être calme, timide et affectueuse, mais elle peut être aussi très susceptible et colérique. Elle aime faire des remontrances aux autres enfants, spécialement aux plus petits. Elle ne fraye qu'avec ses amies les plus proches, Leidy et Camila.
Il faut insister pour que Natalia accomplisse les tâches quotidiennes et les activités pédagogiques programmées. En raison de ses difficultés d'apprentissage et d'un trouble d'anxiété généralisée, elle reçoit des appuis en lecture, en écriture et en mathématiques. Elle suit également une thérapie avec une neuropsychopédagogue.
Ce qu'elle préfère, c'est jouer et danser. Elle est petite et toute fine, très féminine et coquette, mais elle se lance à corps perdu dans le football avec des cris à faire se lever d’enthousiasme les spectateurs les plus passifs. (ou exergue)
MELIZA, 15 ans
Quand elle est arrivée au Foyer en 2011, Meliza nous disait qu'elle voulait mourir, elle culpabilisait d’avoir laissé à la maison ses cinq frères et sœurs dont elle s’occupait avant qu’elle n'ait la chance de venir vivre au Foyer. Peu à peu, cette immense tristesse a été remplacée par la joie de se sentir en sécurité, entourée des autres enfants.
Aujourd'hui Meliza est l'une des filles les plus posées du Foyer. Elle est intelligente, positive, responsable et toujours disposée à apprendre. Elle excelle dans les activités et aide parfois les collaboratrices aux ateliers ludico-pédagogiques. Elle aime beaucoup la danse et le basketball, mais aussi dessiner et coiffer ses camarades. Rares sont les moments où nous voyons Meliza démoralisée ou déçue.
Ses projets sont très clairs. Meliza est consciente qu'elle doit d'abord se focaliser sur ses études pour atteindre son rêve de devenir biologiste marine. Sa grande confiance en elle, sa joie et sa façon d'être stimulent plusieurs filles du Foyer.

The final instalment of profiles of the children living in the Tierra de Vida Shelter (Sentinelles in Colombia) which welcomes victims of sexual and physical abuse. (See Sentinelles No. 245 and No. 246)
Today, thirteen children and adolescents are living in our foundation for protection in Minas, in an area surrounded by nature. In this benevolent environment, they are surrounded by a team of carers who help them to heal their wounds and to flourish. They receive a balanced diet, health care, and school support and fun activities. In addition to college, some teenagers follow a vocational training.
CAMILA, 15 years old
In 2006, she was welcomed into the association for one year, and then again from 2011. Camila is a girl who is always in a joyous mood. She likes to take part in activities, but lacks enthusiasm for school tasks. She is spontaneous in her way of being and thinking, which has sometimes caused problems with certain classmates. However, she recognises her mistakes and is trying to change. In general, she has a good relationship with all the children in the association.
Camila cares little for her personal appearance. She is sometimes depicted as a neglected kid, other times as a provocative teenager, getting into trouble. For many girls who have been sexually abused, some boundaries are often blurred. Camila made efforts and seeks advice to regain her self-esteem that has been jeopardized.
At the end of every Friday afternoon, Camila is eager to return to her family. Her grandmother is a formidable matron who has eyes only for her children and grandchildren. Camila carries out all the housework. But it doesn't bother her because she likes to be with her father, her brothers and her cousins. Her mother makes a living off prostitution and has not returned in years.
When asked about what she would like to do in the future, Camila replied: "Sweep and clean to earn money". We explained to her that no work is dishonourable but that if she has the opportunity to study, she may find a job that suits her tastes and abilities. Then, she said that she would like to be a singer. At each performance by the children in the Shelter, Camila
develops gestures imitated from TV shows through lip-syncing, without any shyness. She dreams of glory and glitter. (Inscription?)
We hope that she will work on her life plan and understand the importance of studying to become independent.
YULIANA, 12 years old
Yuliana is in her first year of school. She almost never went to school before coming to live in the Shelter, in December 2015. During her childhood, she had to do the household chores while her mother would go to beg in the city with her three little brothers. Every Friday night, Yuliana's father made her accompany him from bar to bar until dawn. She brought him back to the house, passed-out drunk. Last year, he died of a heart attack. Rumour has it that he was electrocuted in a poorly maintained mine.
Talking about Yuliana’s behaviour at the Shelter is quite complex because one day she will strive to behave herself, to not be rude and to respect her peers, and will then do the complete opposite the next day. For Yuliana, it is difficult to follow rules when at the Shelter, only insults and beatings were the norm. She is manipulative and stubborn, especially when she doesn't like something. This ability to manipulate somehow saved her from the violence of her father. She sometimes starts arguments with her roommates because she has a habit of taking their things without permission.
In December, her mother underwent a delicate operation and Yuliana stayed with her a few days to help her. We thought that, upon returning to the Shelter, she would have forgotten our tips for a good cohabitation. We underestimated Yuliana. Since then, she has been respectful and is rarely the cause behind discord.
Yuliana is very smart and has a good memory. The discovery of the game Memory has been a revelation, she defeated everyone from the outset. Teachers made her sit an exam to give her the opportunity to move into the second year. She unfortunately failed because of reading and writing. Next year, it is possible she'll do two academic years in just one year. It is our wish to all, especially her, because ending up in the same class as her six-year-old brother who just started school of course isn't motivating. Our school support will be strengthened.
Yuliana's three brothers
Stiven, 3 years, Juan Pablo, 4 years, and Jean Carlos, 6 years old, receive support, day and night, at home with their mother. They have also spent a few days at the Shelter following their mother's operation. The beginning was difficult, especially for Stiven, who is very attached to his mother. Little by little, the brothers have learned to recognise and appreciate each of the spaces and lifestyles of the Shelter. They have learned to eat, bathe and dress independently. They eat well and are full of energy in the play activities. For them, working with them was very intense. When a teacher was alone, they absorbed all her attention. When their mother recovered, they left to live with her. Only Jean Carlos comes every morning to
the Shelter for school support. The mother is very possessive, especially with Stiven, to whom she grants everything.
NATALIA, 12 years old
She was only 4 years old when we welcomed her into the Shelter. She suffered from malnutrition, abandonment, physical and verbal abuse. Since then, she is constantly looking for attention. Natalia has two strong traits: she can be quiet, shy and loving, but she can also be very sensitive and angry. She likes to remonstrate with other children, especially the youngest ones. She only opens up to her closest friends, Leidy and Camila.
It is necessary to insist that Natalia accomplish everyday tasks and educational activities planned. Because of her learning difficulties and an ongoing anxiety disorder, she receives support in reading, writing and mathematics. She also receives therapy from a specialist in neuropsychology.
She prefers playing and dancing. She is small and very thin, very feminine and charming, but she went headlong into football with shouts to rise enthusiasm in the most passive of spectators. (Or transcription)
Meliza, 15 years old
When she arrived at the Shelter in 2011, Meliza told us that she wanted to die. She felt guilty for having left at home five brothers and sisters she used to look after before she had the chance to come and live at the Shelter. Gradually, this immense sadness was replaced by the joy of feeling safe, surrounded by other children.
Today, Meliza is one of the calmest girls in the Shelter. She is intelligent, positive, responsible and always willing to learn. She excels in activities and sometimes helps the assistants with leisure-educational workshops. She loves dancing and basketball, but also designing and styling her friends. Rarely do we see Meliza disheartened or disappointed.
Her plans are very clear. Meliza is aware that she must first focus on her studies to achieve her dream of becoming a marine biologist. Her grand self-esteem, joy and way of being have encouraged several girls at the Shelter.
