For years, marketers have been obsessed with dissecting the millennial mind-set. With global spending power of $2.45 trillion in 2015, this is hardly surprising. Debt-ridden, pragmatic and far more cost-conscious than they are given credit for, millennials have made marketers work hard for their attention and money.
But what about Generation Z, the true digital natives arriving fast on millennials’ heels? Many marketers argue that millennials’ heyday is over; that it istime to shift gears and focus onthis younger cohort. At nearly 70 million in size and growing, Gen Z– those born between the mid-1990s to the early 2000s - will soon outnumber their millennial predecessors, representing40 percent of all consumers by 2020.
What similarities do millennials and Gen Z share that marketers can tap into? We have arrived at five overarching commonalities:
1. Both millennials and Gen Zexpect seamless efficiency
Both generations have low tolerance for anything unnecessarily complicated or inefficient. While millennials remember the days of dial-up internet and are slightly more forgiving than Gen Z, they will still walk away if a product or service is too much work. Gen Z, notorious for their eight-second attention spans, do not give brands any second chances. Its essential that all interactions with a brand are joined up, simple and intuitive. Brands must assume they have one chance to get on millennials’ and Gen Zs’ radar.
Who is doing it well?Tech brands like Apple and Google are setting the bar here, integrating all their products to work seamlessly together.
2. Both millennials and Gen Z value experiences over stuff
Millennials are assigning greater importance to meaningful experiences, especially travel.Gen Z seemingly cares even more about experiences, as it gives them something they can share. Gen Z’s favorite brands - Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube - are all highly visual mediums designed to let users share what they're doing.Brands need to engage millennials and Gen Z with experiential content across their preferredchannels. Even if they don’t buy something, they will form a stronger impression of your brand and share their experience with peers.
Who is doing it well?Red Bull takes the cake for creating experiences, which range from entertaining fans with their Cliff Diving series,to theirannual Soap Box races.
3. Both millennials and Gen Z will engage more if they co-create
Neither millennials nor Gen Z want to be talkedat by marketers. In fact, both are actively avoiding marketing campaigns, evidenced by the markedincrease in ad-blocking software over the past 12 months. As content creators themselves, millennials and Gen Z are far more likely to engage with marketing when they are active participants and contributors.
Who is doing it well?Pandora’s recent campaign for its new Thumbprint Radio feature is a brilliant example of this. Collaborative, humorous and full of amazing dance moves, the campaign engaged youth audiences by asking them to capture their #nofilter reaction when their favorite jam comes on the radio.

لسنواتٍ عديدةٍ لازمَ المسوقين هاجسُ تحليل طريقة عمل عقول "جيل الألفية". ليس هذا أمراً مفاجئ بوجود قدرة إنفاقيةٍ بلغت حد الـ 2.45 تريليون دولار في عام 2015.
"جيل الألفية" جيل مثقل بالديون وواقعي في نفقاته كما أن إدراكه لقيمة السلع المادية أكبر من المتوقع، بذلك أُجبِرَ المسوقين على العمل بجهد أكبر لكسب انتباههم وأموالهم.
لكن ماذا عن "جيل زي"؟ الجيل الرقمي بالفطرة الآتي مسرعاً ليحل محل "الجيل الألفي"؟
يعتقد العديد من المسوقين أن ذروة عهد "جيل الألفية" قد انتهت وأنه قد حان الوقت لتبديل الأولويات والتركيز على الفئة الأصغر سناً. بعد بلوغ عددهم المستمر بالتزايد السبعين مليون نسمة، قريباً سيفوق عدد أفراد "جيل زي" _ هم الأشخاص الذين ولدوا بين منتصف التسعينات وآوائل القرن العشرين _ أسلافهم من "جيل الألفية" مشكلين بذلك ما نسبته 40% من عدد المستهلكين بحلول عام 2020.
ما هي أوجه الشبه التي يمتلكها كلا الجيلين والممكن الاستفادة منها من قِبل المسوقين؟
لقد توصلنا إلى خمس قواسم مشتركة شاملة بين الجيلين:
1. كلاً من "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي" يتوقعان فعاليّة تامة.
كلا الجيلين إنجذابهم ضئيل تجاه الأشياء غير الضرورية والمعقدة وغير الفعّالة.
على الرغم من تذكر جيل "الألفية" لتلك الأيام التي استخدم فيها الإنترنت بتقنية الطلب الهاتفي (dial-up) بالإضافة لكونهم نوعاً ما أكثر تسامحاً مقارنةً بنظيرهم فهذا لا يمنع تجاهلهم للمنتج أو الخدمة إن كانت تتطلب منهم بذل الكثير من الجهد. يمتلك "الجيل زي" سمعة سيئة حين يتطلب الأمر كسب انتباهه لفترة تمتد لأطول من 8 ثوان، فهذا الجيل لا يعطي لأيّة شركة فرصة ثانية أبداً. بات أمراً أساسياً أن تكون كافة تفاعلاته مع أيّة شركة منظمة بشكل بسيط وبديهي. يجب على الشركات أن تفترض مسبقاً أنها تمتلك فرصة واحدة فقط لكسب انتباه "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي".
من نجح في تطبيق ذلك؟ الشركات التقنية أمثال (Apple) و(Google) اعتمدوه كمبدأ أساسي حيث عملوا على دمج جميع منتجاتهم لتتوافق في العمل مع بعضها البعض.
2. كلاً من "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي" يفضلان التجربة أكثر من أي شيء آخر.
"جيل الألفية" يربط أهمية كبيرة بالتجارب الهادفة وعلى وجه الخصوص السفر. يبدو أن "جيل زي" يهتم بشكل أكبر بالتجارب وذلك كونها تقدم لهم شيئاً بإمكانهم مشاركته مع الآخرين. لشركات المفضلة لدى "جيل زي" _ (Instagram)، (Snapchat)، (YouTube)_ هي وسائل بصرية متطورة صُممت لتمكّن مستخدميها من مشاركة ما يقومون به مع الآخرين. يجب على الشركات أن تُشرك "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي" بمحتواها وتجاربها وذلك عبر قنوات الجيل المفضلة. حتى إن لم يكن لديهم رغبةً في شراء أي شيء فإنهم بذلك سيبنون إنطباعاً أقوى عن شركتك وسيشاركون تجربتهم الشخصية مع نظرائهم من جيلهم.
من نجح في تطبيق ذلك؟ تنال شركة (Red bull) شرف تمكنها من خلق التجارب والتي تتنوع بين الترفيه عن معجبيها ضمن سلسلة الغطس عن المنحدرات إلى سباقات السيارات الصندوقية السنوية.
3. كلاً من "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي" سيتفاعلان أكثر إن شاركوا في التأسيس.
لا يرغب أيّاً من الجيلين أن يتم التحدث عنهم من قبل المسوقين. في الواقع كلاهما يتفادون بشكل كبير الحملات الإعلانية والدليل على ذلك هو الإرتفاع الملحوظ في برامج حجب الإعلانات المنبثقة خلال الـ 12 شهراً الماضيين. ولكن كونهم قد أسسوا المحتوى شخصياً، فعلى الأرجح سيتفاعل "جيل الألفية" و"جيل زي" بشكل أكبر بالتسويق حيث سيصبحون شركاء فعالين ومساهمون نشطاء في السوق.
من نجح في تطبيق ذلك؟ تعد حملة (Pandora) الأخيرة بميزة البصمة الإذاعية الجديدة مثالاً عبقرياً عن ذلك. فكرة متعاونة ومرحة وتتمتع بحركات راقصة مذهلة، أشركت تلك الحملة الجمهور الشاب في فعاليتها بأن طلبت منهم إلتقاط صوراً لردة فعلهم (غير المفلترة) حين يسمعون أغنيتهم المفضلة في الإذاعة.

In other words they vary by over 5 meters from high tide to low tide. So we have to wait exactly when high tide is and see how high the platform is. And then we have to see how quickly does the tide go down in order to so how long we can hold the competition before it gets too high and too shallow. It has to be a certain depth for the divers so they don´t hit the bottom which is 5 meters minimum. And then it can´t be more than 28 metres either otherwise it gets too dangerous and different again for them because they´re used to having their dives in a certain height range.
Translation - Arabic ما أفعله عادة في أيّة محطة, أنت تعلم ومن الواضح هنا ايضاً, أننا نقوم بقياس ارتفاع المنصة. ويعد هذا الأمر هنا حاسما للغاية بسبب المد والجزر الكبير. بمعنى آخر إنها تختلف بما يزيد عن 5 أمتار من المد إلى الجزر. لذا يجب أن ننتظر بالظبط لحين بلوغ المد أعلى مستوياته ونرى حينها ارتفاع المنصة. ثم يجب أن نرى ما سرعة انخفاض المد لنتمكن من تحديد كم لدينا من الوقت لنقيم المنافسة قبل أن ينخفض عمق الماء ويصبح سطحي جداً. يجب أن يكون عمقاً محدداً للغطاسين كي لا يرتطموا بالقاع الذي يقع تحت عمق 5 أمتار على الأقل. ولا يمكنه أن يبلغ أكثر من 28 متراً ايضاً وإلا أصبح خطيراً جداً ومختلفاً ايضا بالنسبة إليهم لأنهم معتادون على القيام بقفزاتهم من ارتفاع معيّن.
