Hello. My name is ______. I'm a professor in mathematics. I will give lectures on Bulguksa and Seokguram. Bulguksa is a temple located on the southwest side of Tohamsan Mountain and is the most famous temple in Korea. This temple, which symbolizes Buddha's country, is the epitome of science and technology of Unified Silla. During the lecture, I will focus on the facade of the temple, and use mathematics to introduce a mathematical perspective in appreciating the temple.
Another lecture that I'll give is on Seokguram. Most other lectures about Seokguram focus on structure and architecture. However, the science and technology applied in building Seokguram is much more profound. Therefore, I'm going to discuss in my lecture a mathematical perspective on Seokguram using projective geometry which is often used in art and architecture.
Hello. My name is ______. I'll give lectures on Cheomseongdae and Poseokjeong. Cheomseongdae is well-known to us generally as an astronomical observatory. You might be surprised to hear that a nine-character phrase in Samguk Yusa is the only mention of Cheomseongdae in historical records. During the lecture, together we will look at the political backdrop at the time of Queen Seondeok who ordered the construction of Cheomseongdae and was the first queen of Korea. We will also look at various theories about its purpose and its design that combines masterful architectural engineering with remarkable aesthetics and ensures outstanding earthquake resistance.
Poseokjeong is often associated with the fall of Silla. In the lecture on Poseokjeong, we will talk about its historical background and also the origin of meandering watercourses for floating wine-cups, which is what Poseokjeong is. In addition, we will look at the unique application of fluid mechanics hidden in the design of Poseokjeong.
Hello. I'm ______ of POSTECH Humanities and Social Sciences. 1,200 years ago, an enormous bronze bell as heavy as 19 tons was built in Gyeongju, Silla. The biggest Buddhist bell existing in Korea that still sounds as grand and beautiful as ever, it's the Sacred Bell of Great King Seongdeok. For the people of 1,200 years ago to manage to build such a large and elegant bell, what technical difficulties did they have to overcome? How did they overcome them? And what particular things did they do to enable such clear and marvelous sound? These questions will be discussed in my lecture. There is a sad legend about the bell. The bell is also called the Emile (“mommy”) Bell. The legend says that to complete the bell, they had to sacrifice a baby. Can this legend be true? Scientific evidence that can show whether the legend is true or not will also be discussed during the lecture.
Of many Silla scientific heritage, I'll be giving a lecture on metallurgy. Hello, I’m ______. Silla had an exquisite and rich metal culture and produced diverse metal items. Outstanding bronze alloy techniques used in building Buddhist bells, ability to make iron weapons and farming tools, and refined sculpture techniques and impressive application of science in Buddhist statues: these are difficult to replicate even with modern science and technology. Through the major metal artifacts of Silla, we will be able to better understand the scientific knowledge and wisdom of the Silla people.

Much also that I had forgotten now returned to me as I approached--a group of elms, a little turn of the parson's wall, a small paddock beyond the graveyard close, cherished by one man, with a low wall of very old stone guarding it all round. And all these things fulfilled and amplified my delight, till even the good vision of the place, which I had kept so many years, left me and was replaced by its better reality. "Here," I said to myself, "is a symbol of what some say is reserved for the soul: pleasure of a kind which cannot be imagined save in a moment when at last it is attained."

Source text - English The Sacred Bell of King Seongdeok is the biggest beomjong (temple bell) in Korea. It is about 3.75 meters high, and its diameter is about 2.4 meters. And it weighs about 19 tons. But it is not the biggest temple bell that has been ever built in Korea. Around the same time as this Sacred Bell was built, another bell, a much bigger one was built weighing more than 50 tons, if historical records are correct. But this bell was lost during the Mongol invasion. And so, the Sacred Bell is the biggest one among all those existing temple bells in Korea. And the work started about 742 CE, and it took almost 30 years to complete the bell. The bell was commissioned by King Gyeongdeok to honor his father, King Seongdeok, as the name suggests. And it is currently housed in the National Museum of Gyeongju. Originally, the bell was in Bongdeok Temple. But the temple was lost by a flood, and the bell was neglected. The bell had been neglected for several hundred years. And in the 16th century, the bell was moved to near the city wall of Gyeongju, and started to be used to signal time. So, this is a picture taken in 1900. And as you can see, there is this bell tower, belfry here, in which the Bell was housed. And this small hill behind the bell tower is Bonghwangdae, one of the ancient tombs in Silla. And in 1915, the Cultural Heritage Center in Gyeongju was built, and the bell was relocated into the center. And this is the picture that was taken at that time.
There are many legends about the bell. And one of them is pretty sad. According to the legend, a large amount of bronze was needed, and Buddhist monks traveled around the country to get donations. One of the monks met with a poor country woman and asked for a donation. And the woman replied, "I have nothing but my poor daughter." Of course, the monk didn't take the daughter, the baby dear girl, as a donation and left the house empty-handed. In the meanwhile, the first bell was cast, but it didn't make any sound. Several attempts were made without any success. And finally, the monk had a dream. In the dream, Buddha appeared and said, "Why didn't you take the donation you were supposed to take?" And the monk realized that he needed to take the donation. The baby. So, the monk took the baby, and unfortunately, sadly, put the baby into the molten bronze. And finally, a bell was made, and it made a beautiful sound. But, somehow, someway, people felt very sad when they heard the sound of the bell. People thought that the bell made a sound like "emille", meaning "Because of you, Mother." Somehow, something like the crying of a baby. And so, that's the reason why we Korean people call the bell, the Emille Bell. Anyhow, I think it would incur a lot of technological problems to put a human body into the molten bronze to make a bell. So, some tests were actually made. In 1998, samples were taken from the bell to test the existence of phosphorus from human bones. But no phosphorus was found. By the way, human sacrifice was practiced in ancient Silla. So, this is a picture of excavation in Gyeongju. So, we believe that at least two people were sacrificed and buried under the wall to make the wall strong and long lasting.
Translation - Korean 성덕대왕신종은 한국에서 가장 큰 범종입니다. 높이는 약 3.75미터이며 지름은 약 2.4미터입니다. 무게는 19톤에 달하지요. 그러나 이보다도 큰 종을 한국에서 제작한 적이 있습니다. 성덕대왕신종과 비슷한 시기에 훨씬 더 큰 종이 하나 제작되었는데요, 역사 기록에 따르면 무게가 50 톤이 넘었습니다. 하지만 그 종은 몽골의 침략 중 사라졌고 따라서 성덕대왕신종이 한국에 있는 범종 중에서 가장 큰 종입니다. 서기 742년경 제작에 착수하여 완공까지 거의 30년이나 걸렸습니다. 제작은 경덕왕이 지시하였는데요, 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 아버지 성덕왕을 기리기 위해서였습니다. 종은 현재 경주국립박물관에 소장되어 있습니다. 처음에는 종이 봉덕사에 있었는데, 봉덕사가 홍수로 폐사되고 종은 그냥 방치되었죠. 사실 수백 년 동안 버려지다시피 했다가 16세기에 이르러서 경주 성벽 근처로 옮겨진 후 시간을 알리는 데 사용되기 시작합니다. 이 사진은 1900년에 찍은 건데요, 사진에서 볼 수 있듯이 종을 달아 놓았던 종각이 여기고요. 종각 뒤로 보이는 언덕은 봉황대인데 신라 고분 중 하나입니다. 그리고 1915년에 경주에 고적보존회가 건립되어 성덕대왕신종을 거기로 옮깁니다. 이것은 그때 찍은 사진입니다.
종에 얽힌 전설은 여러 개가 있는데요, 그중 하나는 꽤 슬픕니다. 전설에 따르면 엄청나게 많은 양의 청동이 필요했기 때문에 스님들은 전국을 돌며 시주를 받았다고 합니다. 그중 한 스님이 가난한 시골 여인을 만나 시주를 요청했는데요, 여인이 대답하길 가진 거라곤 가엾은 딸아이뿐이라고 했답니다. 물론 스님은 여자아기를 시주로 받지 않고 빈손으로 그 집을 나왔습니다. 한편, 제일 처음 완성한 종은 소리가 나지 않았어요. 그 후로도 여러 번 시도했으나 결과는 마찬가지였습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 스님은 꿈을 꾸었는데요, 꿈에서 부처님이 나타나 말씀하길 "왜 꼭 필요한 시주를 받아오지 않았느냐?" 스님은 꼭 필요한 시주가 무엇이었는지 깨달았습니다. 바로 그 아기였어요. 그래서 스님은 아기를 데려옵니다. 그러고는 안타깝게도 슬프게도 녹은 청동에 아기를 넣습니다. 이렇게 만들어진 종은 마침내 아름다운 소리를 냅니다. 하지만 종소리를 들은 사람들은 왠지 모르게 슬퍼졌습니다. 종소리가 꼭 "에밀레"하고 우는 것 같았는데 "어머니 때문에"라는 뜻입니다. 어딘가 아기 울음소리와 비슷한 구석이 있었던 거에요. 이런 이유로 한국 사람들은 이 종을 에밀레종이라고도 부릅니다. 하지만 기술상 걸림돌이 많으리라 생각되는데요, 청동에 사람 몸을 녹여 종을 만든다는 게 말입니다. 실제로 이와 관련한 실험이 있었습니다. 1998년에 종에서 샘플을 채취해 사람 뼈에 있는 인이 검출되는지 성분조사를 했죠. 하지만 인은 발견되지 않았습니다. 그런데 신라 시대에 사람을 제물로 바치는 풍습이 있긴 했습니다. 이 사진은 경주에 있는 한 발굴현장인데요, 최소 두 명을 제물로 바쳐 성벽 아래 묻은 것으로 생각됩니다. 성벽이 오랫동안 든든하게 서 있기를 바란 거죠.

I am a freelance translator between Korean and
English. Korean is my native language, and my fluency in English was obtained
through living abroad in the U.S., where I went to school (high school and
college) and worked for 15 years.
My interest in and passion for translation
began while I was living in the U.S. From time to time, the congregation that I
was a part of showed some old movies that had never been officially translated
to Korean. There were many members at the church who did not speak English well
enough to understand, and I volunteered to translate and make subtitles for
three short movies (two 30-minute and one 1-hour long) using Adobe Premiere. I
had no experience in translating movies or making subtitles, but it was a very
fulfilling experience and I knew that that was what I wanted to do.
After I moved back to Korea in 2010, I
worked in positions that required near-native English proficiency and
translation skills until I resigned in Feb 2016 to pursue a career in translating
videos and literature.
I have completed a 6-month course in
video translation offered by the national public broadcaster of Korea. The
course offered training in translating and making subtitles for video content
such as movies, TV series, animation, and documentaries. In addition, I have
taken an introductory course and an intensive course (14 weeks altogether) in
translating works of literature.
Since
the summer of 2017, I have been commissioned by Pohang University of Science
and Technology to transcribe, translate, and make subtitles for several online
lecture series that are given partially in Korean and partially in English or
entirely in either Korean or English.
