Source text - French «L’attente en valait la peine, n'est-ce pas?» lance Nina Hamacher, la blonde biologiste allemande qui nous sert de guide depuis plus de six heures en cette chaude journée d'été. Avec ses collègues de la Station de recherche des îles Mingan, elle sillonne presque quotidiennement les eaux du golfe dans le but d'inventorier les baleines de la région. Mais comme tous les scientifiques, elle ignore encore ce qui pousse certains de ces animaux à bondir hors de l'eau. Est-ce un rituel amoureux? Une façon de se débarrasser des parasites? Une simple démonstration de joie? Ce n'est qu'un des nombreux mystères qui tiennent en haleine les spécialistes. Et qui avivent la fascination du public, lequel n'a jamais été si nombreux à suivre la «route des baleines», en Gaspésie, dans Charlevoix ou sur la Côte-Nord, royaume de l'observation des cétacés.
En ce début d'été, l'atmosphère est fébrile à l'extérieur du centre d'interprétation. Des biologistes terminent l'assemblage, pièce par pièce, de l'impressionnant squelette d'un cachalot de 35 tonnes échoué deux ans plus tôt à L'Anseà-Valleau, en Gaspésie. Blanchie par le soleil, la carcasse tout juste livrée par conteneur peut enfin être présentée au public. «Je veux démythifier Moby Dick, la baleine à dents qui mange les pêcheurs!» dit la jeune naturaliste Sarah Laflamme, qui passera une partie de l'été à raconter l'histoire de ce mastodonte aux milliers de visiteurs du CIMM.
On a fait état de ce triste incident un peu partout dans la presse internationale: en avril dernier, un rorqual commun d'une quarantaine de tonnes s'est échoue sur les berges de Contrecœur, près de Sorel. Il avait été happé par un navire en route pour Cleveland. Selon les experts, des dizaines de milliers de mammifères marins sont victimes d'accidents semblables chaque année dans le monde. C'est ce qui a incite un groupe d'experts québécois à fonder, il y a deux ans, le Réseau québécois d'urgences pour les mammifères marins. Des équipes d'intervention, joignables grâce a un numéro sans frais (1 877 7baleine), peuvent être dépêchées en tout temps pour venir en aide à des animaux marins en détresse ou pour récupérer des carcasses.

With her colleagues in the Mingan Islands Research Station, she travels almost daily to the Gulf in order to inventory the whales in the region. However, like all science, it is still unclear what causes some of these animals to leap out of the water. Is it a love ritual? Is it one way to get rid of parasites? On the other hand, is it a simple demonstration of joy? This is just one of the many mysteries that takes the specialists breath away. In addition, this heightens the public's fascination, which has never been in so many numbers, the "Whale Route", Gaspésie, Charlevoix and on the North Shore, Kingdom of whale watching.
In early summer, the atmosphere is charged with excitement outside the interpretation centre. Biologists finish the assembly, piece by piece, of the impressive skeleton of a 35-ton sperm whale that died two years earlier in ASEAN-Valleau, Gaspésie. Everywhere in the international press this sad incident was reported in April, a fin whale of forty tons was stranded on the banks of Contrecoer near Sorel. It had been struck by a ship en route to Cleveland. According to experts, tens of thousands of marine mammals are victims of similar accidents every year worldwide. This is what has prompted a Quebec expert group to found the Quebec Emergency Response Network for Marine Mammals two years ago. Intervention teams, are reachable on a toll free number (1877 7baleine) and can be dispatched at any time to help marine animals in distress or to retrieve carcasses.
