• in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms: lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media and upper respiratory tract infections including, sinusitis and pharyngitis/ tonsillitis. (Penicillin is the usual drug of choice in the treatment of Streptococcus pyogenes pharyngitis, including rheumatic fever prophylaxis. Azithromycin is generally effective in eradicating streptococci from the oropharynx, however, data establishing the effectiveness of azithromycin in the subsequent prevention of rheumatic fever are not currently available).
• in the treatment of uncomplicated sexually transmitted diseases due to Chlamydia trachomatis and non-multidrug resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in men and women; concomitant infection with Treponema pallidum must be excluded.
