English to Bulgarian: Some remarks on ethnicity in medieval archaeology by Florin Curta Detailed field: Archaeology
Source text - English Recent critiques of the culture‐historical approach to ethnicity have denounced the idea that archaeological cultures are ‘actors’ on the historical stage, playing the role that known individuals or groups have in documentary history. But the critique has gone as far as to claim that, because archaeologists supposedly have no access to the meaning of cultural traditions, medieval ethnicity cannot be studied by archeological means. Ethnicity should be banned from all discussions, if medieval archaeology is to make any progress in the future. The paper examines the theoretical malaise at the root of this scepticism verging on nihilism. The understanding of the archaeological record not as an imprint, but as a text allows for much learning about meaning in the past. Symbols, style and power are the key concepts that currently guide anthropological research on ethnicity as a ‘social construction of primordiality’. As several archaeological examples show, medieval ethnicity was a form of social mobilization used in order to reach certain political goals. Ethnic identity was built upon some pre‐existing cultural identity, in a prototypic manner.
Translation - Bulgarian Скорошните критики срещу културно-историческия подход към етноса, отхвърлят идеята, че археологическите култури са "актьори" на историческата сцена, играещи роли, които познати лица или групи са познавали в писаната история. Но критиката отива до такава степен, че да твърди, че понеже археолозите уж нямат достъп до значението на културните традиции, средновековният етнос не може да бъде изучаван използвайки археологически методи. Етносът трябва да бъде забранен от обсъждане ако изобщо има надежда средновековната археология да се развие в бъдеще. Статията проучва теоритичното безпокойство криещо се в корените на този скептицизъм, граничещ с нихилизъм.
Разбирането на археологическите данни, не като отпечатък, а като текст, позволява за дълбоко запознаване със значението в миналото. Символите, стилът и силата са ключови понятия, които в момент напътстват антропологическото изучаване на етноса като "социална конструкция на първобитието".
Както показват множество археологически примери, средновековният етнос е бил вид социална мобилизация, използвана за достигане на определени политически цели.
Етническата идентичност е построена върху вече съществуващата културна същност по прототипичен начин.

Source text - Bulgarian Живеели двамина стари хора - мъж и жена. Те си имали сламена колибка с щъркелово гнездо на покрива, имали си и два вола: единият - сляп, а другият - куц, имали си една нива, три години неорана. Само дете си нямали, затуй им било криво и мъчно.
Една сутрин старецът рекъл на жена си:
- Бабо, днес отивам да изора нивата. Смятам да пръсна малко просо, че като порасте и узрее - ще дойдат птички да го клъвнат. Щом накацат и почнат да го кълват, аз ще хвърля рибарската си мрежа отгоре им, ще хвана десетина-петнайсет, ще им направя клетки и ще ги занеса на пазара да ги продам. Какво мислиш - добре ли съм решил?
- Много ти е добро решението, само че за обед няма какво да ти наготвя. Я иди по-напред да хванеш малко рибица, пък сетне ще вървиш да ореш.
Слязъл старецът към реката и хвърлил мрежата си в един дълбок вир. Изтеглил я: цяла торба рибки златоперки. Хвърлил повторно и що да види: в мрежата шава едно малко момче, педя високо, с цървулки и мустачки.
- Добро утро, тате! - викнало момчето.
- Кое си ти? - попитал старецът.
- Аз съм твоят син. Стоях под един камък и чаках някоя бабичка да ме измъкне и да ме отнесе в твоята колиба. Чаках, чаках, мустаци ми пораснаха - но никой не дойде. Излязох да се поразходя във водата и ти ме хвана в мрежата. Хайде да ме водиш у дома, че не зная пътя!
Навел се старецът, взел мустакатото момче от мрежата, мушнал го в торбата при рибата и го отнесъл. Бабичката, като го видяла, много се зарадвала
- Ох, на мама - викнала тя, - то си ми има вече мустачки! Ще го наречем Педя човек.
Дядото се порадвал на сина си, помилвал го по главичката и заминал на оран. На обед Педя човек тръгнал да носи на баща си чорбица в едно менче. Като стигнал на нивата - бащата го съзрял, спрял воловете и седнал в браздата да сърба топла чорбица. Педя човек се повъртял малко насам-нататък, сетне се хванал за опашката на единия вол, покатерил се на гърба му, пропълзял към ухото му и влязъл вътре. Викнал силно:
- Дий!
Волът потеглил. Тръгнал и другият. Захванал Педя човек да оре наместо баща си. Теглил една бразда. права като свещ, теглил втора, почнал да свирука.
- Тате - викнал той на стареца, - ти си полегни под крушата, пък аз ще изора нивата. Ако някой мине и поиска да ме купи - ти ме продай, не се бой. Вземи парите, а сетне аз пак ще се върна.
Легнал старецът и задрямал. По едно време се задал един богат търговец и се смаял: орачът спи под крушата, а воловете сами вървят и орат. Де се е видяло такова нещо!
- Хей - викнал той, - какво е туй чудо? Старецът се надигнал и попитал:
- Какво има?
- Не мога да се начудя как могат воловете сами да орат! - отвърнал търговецът.
- Ако си отвориш хубаво очите, ще видиш, че воловете не орат сами, а син ми ги кара.
- Де го? - още повече се смаял търговецът.
- Ей го там в ухото на вола.
Търговецът приближил до воловете, втренчил се, разгледал мустакатото момче и почнал да се моли:
- Продай ми го!
- Колко даваш? - попитал старецът.
- Сто жълтици.
- Дай парите.
Начел търговецът парите и прибрал Педя човек. Мушнал го във външния джоб на палтото си и тръгнал. По пътя Педя човек прогризал като мишка широка дупка в джоба, спуснал се неусетно на земята и се мушнал в храсталака. А търговецът отминал. Педя човек прекосил гората, излязъл навън. Стигнал до един мост. Нощта била вече настъпила. Прибрал се Педя човек под моста да спи, като решил на другия ден да си продължи пътя. Тъкмо затворил очи, ето че пристигнали под същия мост трима разбойници.
- Тая нощ - рекъл първият - ще откраднем единия от двата вола на оня, дето живее накрай село, съгласни ли сте?
- Съгласни сме! - отговорили другите двама.
- Вземете и мене, братя! - обадил се Педя човек в тъмнината.
- Кой си ти? - трепнали крадците и втренчили очи. Като видели малкото човече, те плеснали с ръце и викнали:
- Тъкмо ти ни трябваш! Ние за такъв мъничък човек земята дерем. Ще влезеш през ключовата дупка в обора на къщата, дето е накрай село, ще отключиш вратата и ще изведеш единия вол, а ние ще те чакаме вън.
Речено - сторено. Отишли разбойниците в къщата накрай село, помогнали на Педя човек да влезе през ключовата дупка и притихнали в тъмнината. По едно време Педя човек надал вик отвътре, колкото му глас държи:
- Братя разбойници, кой вол да открадна - белия или черния?
Педя човек извел черния вол. Крадците го подкарали към гората, заклали го, одрали му кожата и си го разделили. На Педя човек дали шкембето. Дигнали се бърже и си отишли. Педя човек слязъл в близката долчинка, измил хубаво шкембето, мушнал се вътре на топло и заспал. Същата нощ в долчинката пристигнал гладен вълк, Като съзрял шкембето, той подскокнал, отворил уста и го налапал. Педя човек се събудил в корема на вълка. Потъркал очи и почнал да се разхожда. Мръднал към устата на вълка и погледнал през зъбите. Било пладне. Насреща, под една орехова сянка, пладнувало цяло стадо овце, а овчарят и кучетата спели. Вълкът тихо приближил към едно крехко агънце. Тъкмо когато посегнал да го удуши, Педя човек се развикал:
- Овчарко, ставай, че вълкът грабна агнето ти!
Овчарят скокнал и насъскал кучетата си. Те връхлетели върху вълка. Вълкът се втурнал към гората и едва се отървал от силните овчарски кучета. Когато стигнал в храсталаците, почнал да дебне един заек, но щом наближил, Педя човек пак се развикал:
- Зайко, бягай! Отиде ти кожухчето!
Заекът побягнал. Вълкът тогава продумал:
- Кой си ти, дето се разхождаш в моя корем и плашиш пляч-ката ми?
- Аз съм Педя човек.
- Какво искаш от мене?
- Искам да ме заведеш у дома при майка ми и при баща ми.
- Къде живеят те?
- Хе там, в долното село.
Вълкът подвил опашка и се спуснал надолу. Пристигнал в село, прескочил плета и влязъл в двора на колибата, гдето живеели бащата и майката на Педя човек.
Педя човек си подал главата през вълчата уста и викнал:
- Тате, мале, удрете вълка, ама гледайте корема да не биете, защото ще ми строшите кокалите!
Дядото грабнал секирата и се втурнал. Подире му изскочила и бабичката с кобилицата. Тупа-лупа - убили вълка. Разпрали му корема и извадили Педя човек.
- Как сте? - попитал Педя човек и си засукал мустака.
- Добре сме - отвърнали старците. - Тебе чакахме.
- Вие сте добре - рекъл Педя човек, - но аз не съм, защото нямам топла дрешка. А иде зима.
- Лесна работа! - рекъл старецът и одрал кожата на вълка. А бабичката взела една губерка и му ушила хубаво меко кожухче.
Translation - English Once upon a time, there lived two elders - a man and a woman. They had a straw hut, with a stork nest on the roof, and two oxen - one was blind, the other - lame. They also had a filed that had not been plowed in three years. The one thing they did not have was a child, which made them very sad.
One morning the old man said to his wife:
- Granny, I'm going to go and plow the field today. I plan on throwing some millet so that when it grows and ripens, birds would come to peck it. Then, once they land in the field and start pecking, I'll throw my fishing net over them, maybe catch ten-fifteen, I'll make them some cages and I'll sell them at the market. What do you think - have I thought it out well?
- That's a very good idea but I have nothing to cook you for lunch. Why don't you go catch some fish first and then you can go plowing.
The old man went down to the river and tossed his net in a deep pool. When he pulled it out, the net was full with gold tailed fish!
He threw it again and was surprised to see that in the net wriggled a small boy, the size of a hand span, with little moccasins and whiskers.
- Good morning, papa! - yelled out the boy.
- What are you? - asked the old man.
- I am you son. I was sitting under a rock, waiting for any old lady to pull me out and take me to you hut. I waited so long I grew whiskers but no one would come. I came out for a stroll in the water and you caught me in your net. Now how about you take me home, for I do not know the way!
The old man bent down and picked up the boy from the net, put it in his fish bag and brought it home. When the granny saw it, she was very pleased.
- Aw, look at mamma's boy - she cried - he already has whiskers! We shall call him Span man.
The old man was delighted at his son, brushed his little head and went plowing.
At noon, Span man went to bring his father some soup in a copper pot. When he reached the field, the father noticed him, stopped the oxen, and sat in the furrow to have some warm soup.
Span man looked around for a bit then grabbed the tail of one of the oxen, climbed on his back and crawled in his ear. He yelled loudly:
- Hup!
The ox went on. So did the other. Span man began plowing instead of his father. He dug one furrow, as straight as a candle, then another and began to whistle.
- Papa - he yelled at the old man, - you lie down under the pear tree and let me plow the field. If someone stops by and wants to buy me - sell me, don't worry. Take the money and I'll make my own way back.
The old man laid down and dozed off. After some time, a rich merchant passed by and was astonished to see the plowman sleeping under a pear tree, and the oxen plowing on their own. Never has this been!
- Hey - he yelled out, - what is this sorcery?
The old man sat up and asked:
- What's the matter?
- I cannot believe my eyes that the oxen can plow on their own! - replied the merchant.
- Ah, if you open your eyes better you will see that they are not on their own, my son is managing them.
- Where is he? - the even more astounded merchant asked.
- There he is, in the ear of the ox.
The merchant got closer to the oxen, focused his eyes, glared whiskered boy up and down, and started begging:
- Sell him to me!
- How much will you pay me? - asked the old man.
- A hundred gold coins.
- Give me the coin.
The merchant counted out the coin and collected Span man. He snuck him in the outside pocket of his coat and went on his way. On the way, Span man, like a mouse, gnawed a wide hole in the pocket, silently dropped to the ground and snuck in the thicket. And the merchant went on, none the wiser.
Span man crossed the forest and stepped outside it. He reached a bridge. Night had already fallen. Span man decided to continue on his way the next day and crawled under the bridge to sleep. Just as he had closed his eyes, three robbers appeared under the same bridge.
- Tonight - said the first- we shall steal the two oxen of the guy that lives at the edge of the village, all agreed?
- Agreed! - replied the other two.
- Take me with you, brothers! - called out Span man in the dark.
- Who are you? - flinched the robbers and glared out into the darkness. When they saw the little man, they clapped their hands together and said:
- You're just the guy we need! We'd scour the earth for a wee fellow like you. You will go in through the keyhole of the byre in the house on the edge of the village, unlock the door and take out one of the oxen, while we wait outside for you.
And so it was. The robbers went to the house at the edge of the village, helped Span man to get in the key hole and waited in the darkness. After some time Span man cried out at the top of his lungs from inside:
- Fellow robbers, which ox should I steal - the white or the black?
- Quiet, you whiskered mite - whispered the robbers - take out the black one!
Span man came out with the black ox. The robbers drove it to the forest, slaughtered it, skinned it, and shared it among themselves. To Span man they left the tripe. They got up and quickly went away.
Span man went down to the nearest glen, washed the tripe well, crawled inside its warmth and fell asleep. The same night, a hungry wolf appeared. When the wolf saw the tripe, he leaped with his mouth open and swallowed it hole.
Span man woke up in the belly of the wolf. He rubbed his eyes and began walking about. He went up to the wolfs mouth and peered through his teeth. It was noon. Ahead, under the shadow of a walnut tree, rested s whole herd of sheep, and the shepherd and his dogs were asleep. Quietly the wolf approached a tender little lamb. Just as he was getting ready to pounce, Span man cried out:
- Shepherd, get up, the wolf stole your lamb!
The shepherd snapped right up and released his dogs. They attacked the wolf. He ran to the forest and barely escaped the shepherds dogs. When he reached the thicket, he began stalking a rabbit but as soon as he got close, Span man again cried out:
- Run, rabbit or your pelt will get it!
The rabbit ran. Then the wolf said:
- Who are you that walks around my belly and scares away my prey?
- I am Span man.
- What do you want from me?
- I want you to take me home to my mother and father.
- Where do they live?
- There, in the lower village.
The wolf wagged his tail and went down. He arrived in the village, jumped the hedge and went inside the yard of the house of Span mans mother and father.
Span man poked his head through the wolfs mouth and cried out:
- Papa, Mama, hit the wolf but make sure you don't hit his belly or you'll surely brake my bones!
The old man grabbed his ax and ran at the wolf. After him ran out granny with her yoke. Whack - thwack - they killed the wolf. They tore his belly open and took out Span man.
- How are ya? - asked Span man, twirling his whiskers.
- We're fine - replied the elders. - We were waiting for you.
- Well, you're fine - said Span man, - but I'm not because I don't have a warm garment. And winter is coming!
- Easily done! - said the old man and skinned the wolf. And the granny took a bodkin and sowed him a nice soft coat.
