English to French: Listening to Beethoven
Source text - English After a while a new announcer started talking. He mentioned Beethoven. She had read
in the library about that musician – his name was pronounced with an a and spelled with
double ee. He was a German fellow like Mozart. When he was living he spoke in a
foreign language and lived in a foreign place – like she wanted to do. The announcer
said they were going to play his third symphony. She only halfway listened because she
wanted to walk some more and she didn’t care much what they played. Then the music
started. Mick raised her head and her fist went up to her throat.
How did it go? For a minute the opening balance from one side to the other. Like a walk
or a march. Like God strutting in the night. The outside of her was suddenly frozen and
only that first part of the music was hot inside her heart. She could not even hear what
sounded after, but she sat there waiting and froze, with her fist tight. After a while the
music came again, harder and loud. It didn’t have anything to do with God. This was
her, Mick Kelly, walking in the daytime and by herself at night. In the hot sun and in the
dark with all the plans and feelings. This music was her -- the real plain her.
Translation - French Après quelques temps un nouveau présentateur a commença à parler. Il mentionna
Beethoven. Elle avait lu des ouvrages sur ce musicien à la bibliothèque—son nom se
prononce ‘é’ et s’écrit avec un double ‘e’. Il était Allemand, comme Mozart. Quand il était
vivant, il parlait une langue étrangère/ qui n’était pas la sienne et il vivait dans un lieu/ pays
étranger — comme elle voulait faire. Le présentateur dit qu’ils allaient jouer sa troisième
symphonie. Elle a seulement écouté la moitié car elle voulait se promener un peu plus et
se préoccupait peu de ce qu’ils jouaient. Alors, la musique a commencé. Mick a levé la
tête et son poing remontât à sa gorge.
Comment cela s’était-il passé? Pour un moment l’ouverture balance d’une côté à l’autre.
Comme une promenade ou une marche. Comme Dieu se pavanant dans la nuit.
L’extérieur d’elle tout d’un coup était gelé et seulement la première partie de la musique
était chaude dans sa cœur. Elle ne pouvait même pas entendre les sons qui suivaient
l’ouverture, mais elle s’assit là et, attendant, elle gela, avec le poing serré. Après un
certain temps la musique repartit de nouveau, cette fois, plus dure et forte. Cela n’avait
rien à voir avec Dieu. C’était elle, Mick Kelly, qui marchait pendant la journée et toute
seule la nuit. À la chaleur du soleil et dans l’obscurité avec tous ses plans/projets et
sentiments. Cette musique était elle — tout simplement elle.

Chère Marina,
Pour vous écrire j’ai besoin de calme et d’être un peu seule,
heureusement il y a la bibliothèque. Mais il y a souvent du monde et je
n’ai pas toujours le temps. Hier, j’ai lu une longue interview où vous
parlez de votre enfance et de vos relations difficiles avec vos parents. La
bibliothécaire a accepté de me l’imprimer. Avec photos et tout ! Cette
étoile que vous vous êtes dessinée sur le ventre, avec une lame de rasoir,
quel courage quand même... Avez-vous encore la cicatrice ? Les
photocopies, c’est bien mais j’aimerais vous voir un jour, en vrai. Je suis
bien sûr dans l’impossibilité d’aller vous rencontrer à New York et
pourtant j’en rêve. Suzanne dit qu’il ne faut pas rêver mais faire.
Donnez-moi de vos nouvelles, une simple carte suffirait à ma joie. Vous
pouvez me dire la couleur de votre ciel.

Querida Marina,
Para escribirle, necesito calma y estar un poco sola, afortunadamente, está la biblioteca. Pero
a menudo, hay gente y no siempre tengo tiempo. Ayer, leí una entrevista larga donde usted habla
de su infancia y de sus complicadas relaciones con sus padres. La bibliotecaria aceptó
imprimírmela. ¡Con fotos y todos! Esa estrella que usted se ha dibujado en el vientre, con una
hoja de afeitar, hay que ver que coraje... ¿Todavía tiene la cicatriz? Las fotocopias, están bien
pero me gustaría verla un dia, en persona. Por supuesto me es imposible ir a conocerla à Nueva
York, aunque lo sueño. Suzanne dijo que no hay que soñar, sino hacer los sueños realidad.
Deme noticias suyas, una postal simple me alegraría. Puede decirme el color de su cielo.
