The amount of sugar purchased by households through soft drinks fell by 10% in the year following the introduction of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy, say researchers at the University of Cambridge.
This represents a valuable win-win for public health and the food industry – potentially improving people’s health with no detrimental effect on the volume of soft drinks that companies are selling

While the volume of soft drinks purchased did not change, the amount of sugar in those drinks was 30g lower per household per week, which the researchers say represents a ‘win-win’ for public health and industry.
Sugary drinks have been linked to a number of health issues, including dental caries, obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In April 2018, the UK introduced a Soft Drinks Industry Levy explicitly designed to incentivise manufacturers to reduce the sugar content of soft drinks. The levy was placed on manufacturers, importers and bottlers rather than on consumers. It included two levy tiers: 24p per litre for ‘high tier’ drinks containing more than or equal to 8g total sugar per 100ml; and 18p per litre for ‘low tier’ drinks containing more than or equal to 5g and less than 8g total sugar per 100ml.
A team led by researchers from Cambridge’s Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) at the MRC Epidemiology Unit analysed data from the Kantar Worldpanel, in which participating households are asked to record all food and drink purchases brought into the home. This included approximately 31 million purchases of drinks, confectionery and toiletries from March 2014 to March 2019.
The team divided soft drinks into three categories based on sugar content: high tier drinks, low tier drinks and no levy drinks (those with less than 5g total sugar per 100ml). As the Soft Drinks Industry Levy may have led households to substitute other drinks, they also examined purchasing of drinks exempt from the levy, including milk-based drinks, alcoholic drinks and no-added-sugar fruit juices.

AI and the Language Community

When the subject of this issue of Multilingual Magazine was announced, my first thought for this article was, ‘How does AI affect the language community?” This seemed to suggest a rich source of material to explore. Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a major part of AI activities. Specifically, Machine Translation (MT), Speech Recognition and Language Understanding are all the focus of massive research and development programs distributed throughout the enterprise and academic worlds. Then, we have work on enhancing productivity using technologies that have revolutionized our working lives. AI’s achievements are already colossal and are driving global communications to dizzying heights. Our community has been enriched by entirely new disciplines, spearheaded by engineers without whose work localization, internationalization and globalization would remain pipe dreams. Of course, as with all change, there has been some negative impact. Automation has altered the economics of working as language professionals. And there is the contentious issue of human translators feeding the machine: the very machine that threatens to make professional language skills redundant. On the one hand, therefore, AI seems to have a well-earned place in our community, yet on the other, its presence is perceived as a menacing threat. How exactly, then, is the language community dealing with AI?
AI, it seems, is everywhere. Everybody’s doing it. It therefore seems fair to ask, is there an AI community and are we part of it? The answer in a word is yes. But such a simple answer is quite misleading. A disclosure: I’ve been married to an AI researcher for many years. My husband, it so happens, is a refugee from the so-called AI winter of the mid 1980’s and early 1990’s. This was a period when in the UK Sir James Lighthill published a scathing report on basic AI research methodologies. Coupled with a general pessimism amidst the AI pantheon of big-name academics, including Marvin Minsky, who were survivors of an even earlier wave of disenchantment with AI’s accomplishments, funding shrank and research hit the wall.

Quando è stato reso noto l'argomento di questo numero di Multilingual, il mio primo pensiero è stato: "Che influenza ha l'intelligenza artificiale sulla community del linguaggio?" Mi è sembrato che ci fosse parecchio materiale da prendere in considerazione. L'elaborazione del linguaggio naturale costituisce una parte preponderante delle attività legate all'intelligenza artificiale. In particolare, la traduzione automatica, il riconoscimento vocale e la comprensione del linguaggio costituiscono il fulcro di ingenti programmi di ricerca e sviluppo, diffusi tanto nel mondo dell'imprenditoria quanto in quello accademico. Inoltre, esistono studi su come migliorare la produttività grazie all'utilizzo di tecnologie che hanno rivoluzionato il nostro approccio al lavoro. I risultati raggiunti dall'intelligenza artificiale sono enormi e stanno portando la comunicazione globale a livelli vertiginosi. La nostra community si è arricchita di discipline totalmente nuove grazie all'opera di ingegneri, senza la quale fenomeni come la localizzazione, l'internazionalizzazione e la globalizzazione sarebbero ancora sogni irraggiungibili. Come tutti i cambiamenti, ci sono stati alcuni effetti negativi. L'automazione ha cambiato il contesto in cui si muove il professionista delle lingue. C'è il problema controverso del traduttore umano, il quale alimenta quella stessa macchina che minaccia di rendere pleonastico il suo lavoro. Sicché, da un lato, l'intelligenza artificiale sembra essersi meritatamente ben posizionata nella nostra community; dall'altro, tuttavia, la sua presenza è percepita come una minaccia. Quindi, come si pone la community del linguaggio nei confronti dell'intelligenza artificiale?
L'intelligenza artificiale sembra essere dovunque. Tutti se ne occupano. Sembra quindi sensato chiedersi se esista una community in quest'ambito e se noi ne facciamo parte. In breve, la risposta è sì. Ma una risposta così semplice è piuttosto fuorviante. Una precisazione: mio marito si occupa di ricerca sull'intelligenza artificiale. Si dà il caso che sia un esule del cosiddetto inverno dell'intelligenza artificiale, verificatosi intorno alla metà degli anni 80, primi anni 90. In quel periodo, Sir James Lighthill pubblicava, nel Regno Unito, una relazione fortemente critica sulle metodologie di base della ricerca nel campo dell'intelligenza artificiale. Questo si andò ad aggiungere a un pessimismo generalizzato tra gli accademici di spicco in tale settore, come Marvin Minsky, sopravvissuti a una precedente ondata di disillusione sui traguardi dell'intelligenza artificiale.
