French to English: Effects of early bilingualism on representational and procedural flexibility in Draw-a-Man Test General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - French Cette étude avait pour objectif de comparer la flexibilité cognitive chez des enfants monolingues et bilingues, à 5 ans et à 8 ans, à travers deux consignes spécifiques : le dessin d’un bonhomme « qui n'existe pas » (Karmiloff-Smith, 1990) et celui d’un bonhomme en commençant par le pied (Baldy, 2010). Au préalable, différentes mesures ont été effectuées afin de vérifier que les participants possédaient des compétences similaires en langage et en dessin en fonction de leur âge. Les résultats montrent qu’à 5 ans, les enfants monolingues et bilingues obtiennent des scores comparables à l’évaluation langagière en franc¸ ais. Leurs scores bruts moyens, se situent dans la norme des enfants de leur tranche d’âge (Dunn et al., 1997). Il en est de même pour les participants de 8 ans. Par ailleurs, le niveau de langage en arabe ou en tamoul (2 langues peu valorisée par la société) a été évalué de manière indirecte pour les enfants bilingues simultanés et successifs à travers un questionnaire proposé à leurs parents. Les résultats indiquent que la langue maternelle est activement pratiquée dans le cadre familial par les participants. Enfin, les scores semblables au dessin de la maison montrent que les enfants bilingues sélectionnés ne présentent pas un rapport culturel au dessin qui viendrait biaiser les mesures de flexibilité représentationnelle et procédurale.
En dépit de capacités similaires en langage et en dessin, les participants produisent des changements différents à l’épreuve du bonhomme étrange. À 5 ans comme à 8 ans, les monolingues répondent, plus fréquemment que leurs pairs bilingues, à la consigne du bonhomme « qui n’existe pas » en modifiant la forme d’un élément ou la forme globale du bonhomme (à 8 ans). Néanmoins, cette différence dans le type d’innovation produit n’est pas significative sur le plan statistique. En revanche, les enfants bilingues produisent de manière significative davantage de changements inter-catégoriels que leurs pairs monolingues. En effet, alors que ce type d’innovation est totalement absent des dessins des monolingues de 5 ans, 3 bilingues successifs (tamoul-franc¸ais) sur 11 et 6 bilingues simultanés (franc¸ ais-arabe) sur 12 réalisent des modifications impliquant l’ajout d’éléments issus d’une autre catégorie. Ces résultats confirment ceux des travaux d'Adi-Japha et al. (2010) concernant l’émergence d’une flexibilité inter-représentationnelle plus précoce chez les enfants bilingues que chez leurs pairs monolingues. L’avantage bilingue dans la production de changements inter-catégoriels se retrouve seulement sur le plan descriptif à 8 ans : alors que seulement 3 enfants monolingues sur 12 ajoutent un élément issu d’une autre catégorie, ce type d’innovation est présent chez 10 bilingues simultanés sur 16 et 6 bilingues successifs sur 10. L’hypothèse, soutenue dans cette étude, d’une flexibilité représentationnelle de plus haut degré de complexité chez les enfants bilingues simultanés et successifs à 5 ans et à 8 ans n’est que partiellement confirmée. L’absence de différence significative entre monolingues et bilingues à 8 ans suggère que l’avantage lié au bilinguisme en termes de flexibilité représentationnelle s’atténue avec l’âge. Notons, néanmoins, que l’ensemble des facteurs impliqués dans la tâche proposée — capacités en motricité fine, en perception, compétences développementales non liées au langage (Adi-Japha et al., 2010) — peuvent avoir minimisé la différence de flexibilité représentationnelle attendue chez les enfants bilingues de 8 ans. Nos résultats sont, toutefois, complémentaires de ceux de l’étude menée par l’équipe israélienne, puisqu’ils situent le bénéfice lié au bilinguisme à 5 ans en matière de flexibilité inter-représentationnelle dans un contexte socio-économique défavorisé.
Les résultats de notre recherche viennent nuancer les propositions de Vintner et Picard (1996) et Picard et Vintner (1999) qui expliquent qu’au fur et à mesure de son développement l’enfant accède à des unités cognitives de différentes tailles permettant une évolution de la flexibilité : à 5 ans, elle serait intra-représentationnelle et centrée sur certains éléments de l’objet étrange, à 7 ans également avec des changements impliquant la relation tout-partie et elle deviendrait inter-représentationnelle à 9 ans lorsque l’enfant est capable de décomposer ses représentations grâce à une augmentation des capacités de la mémoire de travail. Dans la présente étude, la flexibilité est inter-représentationnelle dès l’âge de 5 ans lorsqu’il y a bilinguisme.
Translation - English The purpose of this study was to compare cognitive flexibility in monolingual and bilingual children aged 5 and 8 using two tasks: a drawing of a human figure "who does not exist" (Karmiloff-Smith, 1990) and a drawing of a human figure from the feet up (Baldy, 2010). Various steps were taken in advance to verify that participants in each age group had similar baseline language and drawing competencies. In our study, the 5-year-old monolingual and bilingual children obtained similar scores on a French-language proficiency test. Their raw score averages was lay within the normal range for children in their age group (Dunn et al., 1997). This was also true for the 8-year-old participants. In addition, language proficiency levels in Arabic or Tamil – considered low-status languages in France – were assessed indirectly for simultaneous and sequential bilingual children via a questionnaire administered to their parents. The results indicate that participants actively spoke their native language at home. Finally, the fact that the children obtained similar scores for the drawings of a house shows that the bilinguals who participated in the study did not have a cultural relationship to drawing that could skew measures of representational and procedural flexibility.
Despite similar language and drawing competencies, participants produced different changes in the nonexistent human-figure test. When instructed to draw “a man who does not exist”, both 5 and 8-year-old monolinguals responded more frequently than their bilingual peers by modifying the shape of one element or – in the case of 8-year-olds – the overall shape of the human figure. Nevertheless, this difference in the types of representational innovations produced is not statistically significant. In contrast, bilingual children produced significantly more inter-categorical changes than their monolingual peers: 3 out of 11 sequential bilinguals (Tamil-French) and 6 out of 12 simultaneous bilinguals (French-Arabic) produced changes involving the insertion of elements from another category. This type of innovation is completely absent from the drawings of 5-year-old monolinguals. These findings confirm those of Adi-Japha et al. (2010) regarding the earlier emergence of inter-representational flexibility in bilingual children compared with monolinguals. At the age of 8, bilinguals’ advantage in the ability to produce inter-categorical changes is limited to the descriptive level: Where only 3 out of 12 monolingual children inserted elements from another category, this type of innovation was made by 10 out of 16 simultaneous bilinguals and 6 out of 10 sequential bilinguals. The hypothesis defended in this study, according to which simultaneous and sequential bilinguals aged 5 and 8 exhibit representational flexibility of a higher degree of complexity, was only partially confirmed. The absence of a significant difference between monolinguals and bilinguals at age 8 in this respect suggests that the advantages associated with bilingualism in terms of representational flexibility diminish with age. It is possible, however, that the factors involved in the proposed task – fine-motor, perceptual, and developmental competencies that are not linked to language (Adi-Japha et al., 2010) – minimized the difference in representational flexibility expected in bilingual 8-year-olds. Our results are nonetheless complementary to those of Prof. Adi-Japha and her colleagues, as they indicate the benefits of bilingualism for inter-representational flexibility in 5-year-olds from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
Our findings qualify prior research by Vintner and Picard (1996) and Picard and Vintner (1999), who maintain that as children develop, they gain access to cognitive units of differing sizes, thereby enhancing flexibility. At age 5, this flexibility is supposedly limited to intra-representational elements and applies only to certain elements of the unaccustomed object. At age 7, flexibility extends to changes manipulating part-whole relationships, before finally becoming inter-representational at age 9, at which time children are capable of picking apart their representations thanks to increased working memory capacity. However, the results of the present study suggest that flexibility is already inter-representational in bilinguals at the age of 5.
