Bio

Experience

I have been primarily located in Japan since 2000, and have been studying Japanese for over 25 years. Over this period, I have held positions with regular translation and interpretation duties, and have also spent extended periods primarily active as a self-employed freelance translator.

  • Served as lead English translator for dozens of projects involving commercial and government websites, printed materials, and signage.
  • Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have pivoted in response to sharply increased demand for creative contents such as video games, virtual/online entertainment, virtual museum presentations, and other "stay home" products and services.
  • Experience in team translation environments for major commercial video game localization, and as lead translator / lead editor on smaller indie games. (Wordfast, MemoQ)
  • Experience in website localization and multi-lingual website implementation. (HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL)
  • Experience in software development in a multi-lingual / multi-cultural environment. Programming and technical writing experience. Software localization experience.
  • Experience in the Japanese travel industry, working with both travel agents and accommodation providers
  • Served as a technical interpreter, translator, and liaison for one of Japan's largest power generation projects in Canada
  • Familiar with education / public school settings; experience translating school transcripts, certificates, diplomas, etc.

Education

I received the Level 1 Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency (Japan Educational Exchanges and Services / The Japan Foundation) in December 2005. I also hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from a Canadian university.

Interests

I have lived in Hokkaido for most of my time in Japan, and am very interested in Hokkaido's unique culture and history. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on English translations of historical sites and materials throughout Hokkaido, and regarding the indigenous Ainu people. I also love Japanese cuisine -- both cooking and experiencing.

I enjoy video games in my free time, and keep current with video game trends in Japan and globally.
