Source text - English As the Spring pilot project sessions of Art Therapy for caregivers and people with Alzheimer Disease draws to a close at the Alzheimer Society, we reflect upon the benefits of this therapeutic process for those participating in the group. With approximately 10 participants having taken part in our first series of sessions and over 20 people having assisted the “Art Therapy Open House” organized last March it is evident that the therapeutic benefits for these individuals are endless. Not a week goes by that we are not enlightened with a caregivers’ story of struggle and commitment or a person with Alzheimer Disease’s statement that within the art therapy group, “here…it doesn’t feel like I have a disease”. For two hours every Friday, participants come to express their thoughts and emotions in a personal reflective manner. Through the uses of such exploration tools as paint, collage, pastels, journaling and more, the participants express and share in ways that are therapeutic and meaningful. The focus is not on the artistic production but on the expression of self in a holistic, non-failure environment.
Translation - French À mesure que les séances du projet pilote printanier d’art-thérapie, organisées à la Société Alzheimer pour les aidants et les personnes atteintes de la maladie d’Alzheimer, tirent à leur fin, nous réfléchissons sur les bénéfices qu’a eus le processus thérapeutique sur les participants du groupe. Comme une dizaine de personnes ont participé à nos premières séances et que plus d’une vingtaine ont participé à la « Journée portes ouvertes d’art thérapie » organisée en mars dernier, il est manifeste que les bénéfices thérapeutiques pour ces personnes sont innombrables. Chaque semaine, nous recevons le témoignage relatant l’engagement et les difficultés que vit un soignant ou le témoignage d’une personne atteinte de la maladie d’Alzheimer qui déclare qu’au sein du groupe de l’art thérapie « je ne me sens pas malade ». Les vendredis, les participants viennent exprimer leurs pensées et émotions pendant deux heures. Faisant usage des outils d’exploration tels le collage, la peinture, les pastels, la créativité individuelle et autres, les participants expriment et partagent leur vécu de manière thérapeutique et signifiante. On ne se concentre pas sur la production artistique, mais sur l’expression de soi dans un environnement holistique et rassurant.

Source text - English Propping up dopamine production has been the central strategy in alleviating Parkinson’s symptoms. The crucial breakthrough was development of the drug levodopa, or L-dopa, a precursor compound that the brain converts into dopamine. Unlike dopamine, L-dopa can pass through the blood-brain barrier – a membrane that surrounds the brain and prevents harmful substances from entering. The initial effects of L-dopa are impressive: muscle mobility returns, and patients can once again take part in life. But after a few years doctors find it increasingly difficult to determine the right dosage, because the dopamine receptors in the striatum become extremely sensitive as the disease progresses. Also, a few neurons may remain that can control and moderate levels of dopamine in the brain. Overdoses lead to uncontrollable, exaggerated movements, whereas underdoses offer no help at all. Another class of substances, called dopamine agonists, can help by imitating the function of dopamine. These include bromocriptine, cabergoline, pramipexole and ropinirole, among others. Even though they are not initially as effective as L-dopa, over time they are easier to dose correctly. Yet patients - especially older ones- may suffer from nausea, vomiting or even hallucinations. For some people, combining an agonist with L-dopa seems to offer the best relief.

La découverte fondamentale a été la mise au point du médicament lévodopa ou L-dopa, composé précurseur que le cerveau transforme en dopamine. À la différence de la dopamine, L-dopa peut traverser la barrière hématoencéphalique, membrane qui entoure le cerveau et empêche les substances nocives d’y pénétrer. Les premiers effets de la L-dopa sont impressionnants : la mobilité musculaire est rétablie, et les malades reprennent part à la vie. Toutefois, quelques années plus tard, les médecins trouvent de plus en plus difficile d’établir la dose précise, car, à mesure que la maladie progresse, les récepteurs dopaminergiques du striatum deviennent extrêmement fragiles. D’ailleurs, il se peut qu'il reste seulement quelques neurones capables de contrôler et de modérer le niveau de la dopamine dans le cerveau. Les surdoses causent des mouvements irrépressibles, maladroits, alors que les doses insuffisantes ne servent à rien. Une autre catégorie de substances, appelées agonistes dopaminergiques, peut se révéler utile en stimulant la production de la dopamine. Ceux-ci comprennent la bromocriptine, la cabergoline, le pramipexole et ropinirole, entre autres. Bien qu’au départ ils ne soient pas aussi efficaces que la L-dopa, au fil du temps, il est facile à déterminer leur dose correcte.
