Source text - English "See for yourself," Siobhan said, using the knife and fork to turn the sheet of paper in his direction.
B4 Scots Law sounds dear.
"Is that it?" he said.
"Your eyes are as good as mine."
He reached up to scratch his head. "Not much to go on, is it?"
"First thoughts?" she asked.
"I was remembering a bit of graffiti from primary school. It was in the boys' toilets." He wrote it down on the paper serviette.

Siobhan read it aloud and smiled. "Be-fore I pee," she repeated. "You think maybe that's what B4 means?"
He shrugged. "Could be part of an address."
"Or a coordinate...?"
He looked at her. "From a map?"
"But which one?"
"Maybe that's what the rest of the clue tells us. How's your Scots Law?"
"The exams were a while back."
"Ditto. Is there some Latin word for 'dear,' maybe something to do with the law?"
"This is hopeless," Siobhan Clarke said.
They'd spent the best part of three hours in the Central Library, followed by nearly fifty quid at a bookshop, buying maps and touring guides of Scotland. Now they were in the Elephant House coffee-shop, having commandeered a table meant for six. It was right below the window at the back of the cafe, and Grant Hood was staring out at the view of Greyfriars Churchyard and the Castle.
"Know what a homonym is?"
"No, but it sounds rude."
"It's when a word sounds like another word. Crosswords use them all the time. There's even one in today's, and second time around it got me thinking."
"Thinking what?"
"About our latest clue. 'Sounds dear': we were thinking of 'dear' meaning expensive or cherished, right?"
Siobhan nodded.
"But it could be a homonym, signalled by 'sounds.'"
"I'm not following." But she'd tucked one leg beneath her and leaned forward, interested.
"It could be telling us that the word we want isn't d-e-a-r but d-e-e-r."
She frowned. "So we end up with 'B4 Scots Law deer?' Is it just me, or does that actually make less sense than before?"
He shrugged, turned his attention to the window again. "If you say so."
He looked at her. She was smiling again. "That's better," he said. "Now... wasn't there some story about how Holyrood got its name? One of the ancient kings shooting arrows at a deer?"
"Search me."
"Excuse me." The voice came from the table next to them. "I couldn't help overhearing." The woman put her book down on the table. "It was David the First, back in the twelfth century."
"Was it now?" Siobhan said.
The woman ignored her tone. "He was out hunting when a stag pinned him to the ground. He reached for its antlers only to find that it had vanished and in its place he was holding a cross. Holy rood means holy cross. David saw it as a sign and built the abbey of Holyrood."
"Thank you," Grant Hood said. The woman bowed her head and went back to her book. "Nice to see an educated person," he added, for Siobhan's benefit. She narrowed her eyes and wrinkled her nose at him. "So it might have something to do with the Palace of Holyrood."
"One of the rooms could be called B4," Siobhan said.
"Like a school classroom."
He saw that she wasn't being serious. "There could be part of Scots Law relating to Holyrood ― it would make another royal connection, like Victoria."
Siobhan unfolded her arms. "Could be," she conceded.
"So all we have to do is find ourselves a friendly lawyer."
"Would someone from the Procurator Fiscal's office do?", Siobhan asked. "If so, I might know just the person ... "
The Sheriff Court was in a new building on Chambers Street, just across from the museum complex. […]
The lawyer was wearing yet another tweed two-piece with grey stockings and flat black shoes. Shapely ankles though, Siobhan couldn't help noticing.
"I hope I'm not disturbing you," Siobhan began.
"Not in the slightest." They were in the court's main entrance hall, busy with ushers and lawyers, security staff and worried-looking families. Elsewhere in the building, guilt and innocence were being judged, sentences handed down.
"Are you here for a trial?"
"No, I just had a question and I wondered if you might be able to help."
"I'd be delighted to."
"It's a note I've found. It might relate to a case, but it seems to be in some sort of code."
They found a free bench and sat down. Brough read the note through its polythene jacket. Siobhan watched as she mouthed the words silently, her brow creasing.
"I'm sorry," she said at last. "Maybe the context would help."
"It's a missing person inquiry," Siobhan explained. "We think she may have been taking part in a game."
"And you need to solve this to reach the next stage? How very curious."
Grant Hood arrived, breathing heavily. Siobhan introduced him to Harriet Brough.
"Anything?" he asked. Siobhan just shook her head. He looked towards the lawyer. "B4 doesn't mean anything in Scots Law? Some paragraph or sub-section?"
"My dear boy," Brough laughed, "there could be several hundred examples, though they'd more likely be 4B rather than B4. We use numerals first, as a general rule."
Hood nodded. "So it would be 'paragraph 4, sub-section b?' "
"Exactly."
"The first clue," Siobhan added, "had a royal connection. The answer was Victoria. We're wondering if this one might have something to do with Holyrood." She explained her reasoning, and Brough took another look at the note.
"Well, the pair of you are cleverer than I am," she conceded. "Maybe my lawyer's mind is too literal." She made to hand the note to Siobhan, but then snatched it back again. "I wonder if the phrase 'Scots Law' is there to put you off the scent."
"How do you mean?" Siobhan asked.
"It's just that if the clue is meant to be wilfully obscure, then whoever wrote it might have been thinking laterally."
Siobhan looked to Hood, who merely shrugged. Brough was pointing to the note.
"Something I learned from my hill-walking days," she said, "is that 'law' is the Scots word for a hill ... "
Siobhan sat in her living room, staring at the message on the laptop's screen. It was in response to an e-mail she'd send to Quizmaster, informing him that she was now working on the second clue.
"So what have you got for us tonight, Einstein?"
He stared down at the maps. "I got thinking about what that lawyer said."
"Harriet?" Siobhan frowned. "She said hills are sometimes called laws."
Hood nodded. "'Scots Law'" he recited. "Meaning maybe we're looking for a word that means the same thing law does in Scots."
"Which would be...?"
Hood unfolded a sheet of paper and started to read aloud.
"Hill, heights, bank, brae, ben, fell, tor ... " He turned the sheet towards her. "The thesaurus is full of them."
She took the paper from him and started reading the list for herself. "We went through all the maps," she complained.
"But we didn't know what we were looking for. Some of the guides have hills and mountains indexed at the back. For the rest, we check grid reference B4 on each page."
"Looking for what exactly?"
"Deer Hill, Stag's Brae, Doe Bank ..."
Siobhan nodded. "You're assuming 'sounds dear' means ‘d-e-e-r?’ "
Hood took a sip of wine. "I'm assuming a lot. But it's better than nothing."
She picked up another of the map books, Handy Road Atlas Scotland. The first page, square B4 was the Isle of Man. This really annoyed her for some reason: the Isle of Man wasn't even in Scotland! The next page, B4 was in the Yorkshire Dales.
"Bloody hell," she said out loud.
"What is it?"
"This map, it's like Bonnie Prince Charlie won the war."
She flipped to the next page, where B4 was the Mull of Kintyre, but the page after that her eyes fixed on the words "Loch Fell." She studied the square more closely: the M74 motorway and the town of Moffat. She knew Moffat: a picture postcard place with at least one good hotel, where she'd stopped once for lunch. At the top of square B4 she saw a small triangle, indicating a peak. The peak was called Hart Fell. It was eight hundred and eight metres high. She looked at Hood.
"A hart's a kind of deer, isn't it?"
He got up off the floor, came and sat next to her. "Harts and hinds," he said. "The hart is the male."
"Why not a stag?"
"Harts are older, I think." He studied the map, his shoulder touching Siobhan' s arm. She tried not to flinch, but it was hard work. "Christ," he said, "it's the middle of nowhere."
"Maybe it's coincidence," she suggested.
He nodded, but she could see he was convinced. "Square B4," he said. "A fell is another name for a law. A hart is a kind of deer ..." He looked at her and shook his head. "No coincidence."
Siobhan switched her TV on and pressed for Teletext.
"What are you doing?" Hood asked.
"Checking the weather for tomorrow. No way I'm climbing Hart Fell in a gale."

Siobhan leu em voz alta e sorriu. “Você tenta, se conseguir, você senta”, repetiu. “Acha que isso pode dar o significado de O20, como ouvinte?”
Grant deu de ombros. “Pode ser parte de um endereço.”
“Ou uma coordenada...?”
Ele olhou para Siobhan. “De um mapa?”
“Mas de que mapa?”
“Talvez seja o que o resto da pista nos esteja dizendo. Como vão seus conhecimentos de direito?”
“Os exames foram há muito tempo.”
“Pra mim também. Servo da Lei? Juíses, advogados, policiais...? Será que tem a ver com direito?”
“Já estou perdendo a esperança”, disse Siobhan Clarke.
Os dois passaram quase três horas na Biblioteca Central e gastaram quase cinqüenta libras numa livraria comprando mapas e guias turísticos da Escócia. Agora estavam na cafeteria Elephant House, onde ocupavam uma mesa para seis pessoas. Era embaixo da janela dos fundos, e Grant Hood observava a vista da Greyfriars Churchyard e o Castelo.
“Você sabe o que é um homófono?”
“Não, mas soa como algo ofensivo.”
“É quando uma palavra tem o mesmo som de outra. As palavras cruzadas usam isso o tempo todo. Hoje mesmo encontrei uma delas, e isso me fez pensar.”
“Pensar no quê?”
“Nessa última pista: ‘Servo da Lei: ficamos pensando em ‘servo’ com o significado de criado ou servidor, certo?”
Siobhan concordou.
Mas pode ser um homófono.”
“Não estou entendendo.” Mas encaixou uma perna embaixo da outra e inclinou-se para a frente, interessada.
“Poderia estar dizendo que a palavra que desejamos não é s-e-r-v-o, mas sim c-e-r-v-o.”
Ela franziu o cenho. “Então terminamos com ‘Cervo da Lei, O20 do Sábio? É impressão minha ou isso faz ainda menos sentido que antes?”
Grant deu de ombros, voltou a atenção para a janela outra vez. “Se você pensa assim.”
Olhou para ela. Siobhan estava sorrindo. “Mas... não tem uma história da origem do nome Holyrood? Um dos reis de antigamente atirando flechas num cervo?”
“Não faço idéia.”
“Com licença.” A voz tinha vindo da mesa ao lado. “Não pude deixar de ouvir.” A mulher colocou o livro na mesa. “Foi o rei David I, no século 12.”
“Foi mesmo?”, admirou-se Siobhan.
A mulher ignorou seu tom de voz. “O rei estava caçando quando um cervo jogou-o chão. Ele tentou segurar o animal pelos chifres e percebeu que eles tinham desaparecido, e que em vez deles estava segurando uma cruz. Holyrood significa santa cruz. David viu nisso um presságio e construiu a abadia de Holyrood.”
“Muito obrigado”, disse Grant Hood. A mulher acenou com a cabeça e voltou ao seu livro. “É bom saber que há pessoas cultas no mundo”, acrescentou, para que Siobhan ouvisse. Ela estreitou os olhos e franziu o nariz para ele. “Então pode ter algo a ver com o Palácio de Holyrood.”
“Talvez um dos aposentos se chamasse O20”, observou Siobhan.
“Como uma sala de aula.”

A advogada vestia um terninho de tweed com meias cinzas e sapato preto de salto baixo. Mas com os quadris em destaque, Siobhan não pôde deixar de notar.
“Espero não estar incomodando”, começou Siobhan.
“Absolutamente.” As duas estavam na entrada principal do tribunal, cheia de advogados e oficiais de justiça, pessoal de segurança e familiares com expressões preocupadas. Em outros locais do edifício, culpa e inocência eram julgadas, sentenças eram proferidas.
“Você está aqui por conta de algum julgamento?”
“Não, estou com uma dúvida e pensei que talvez você pudesse ajudar.”
“Seria um grande prazer.”
“É sobre um bilhete que encontrei. Pode ter relação com um caso, está numa espécie de código.”
As duas encontraram um banco livre e se sentaram. Brough leu o bilhete através do saco de polietileno. Siobhan observou enquanto ela repetia as palavras em silêncio, franzindo o cenho.
“Sinto muito”, disse afinal. “Talvez o contexto pudesse ajudar.”
“É uma investigação de pessoa desaparecida”, explicou Siobhan. “Achamos que ela poderia estar participando de um jogo.”
“E você precisa resolver isso para chegar ao próximo estágio? Que interessante.”
Grant Hood chegou, respiração ofegante. Siobhan apresentou-o a Harriet Brough.
“Alguma coisa?”, perguntou. Siobhan meneou a cabeça. Ele olhou para a advogada. “O20 não significa nada no Direito Escocês? Algum parágrafo ou subseção?”
“Ora, meu rapaz”, riu Brough, “pode haver centenas de exemplos, embora fosse mais provável ser 20-O do que O20. Nos usamos os numerais primeiro, como regra geral.”
Hood aquiesceu. “Então seria ‘parágrafo 20, subseção O’?”
“Exatamente.”
“A primeira pista”, interveio Siobhan, “tinha uma ligação com a realeza. A resposta era Vitória. Estamos pensando se esta não teria algo a ver com Holyrood.” Ela explicou seu raciocínio, e Brough deu outra olhada na anotação.
“Ora, vocês dois são mais espertos que eu”, reconheceu. “Talvez minha cabeça de advogada seja literal demais.” Fez menção de devolver o bilhete a Siobhan, mas pegou-o de volta. “Será que a palavra ‘Lei’ não está aqui para desviar a atenção?”
“Como assim?”, perguntou Siobhan.
“É que se a pista for intencionalmente obscura, quem a escreveu pode ter pensado de forma tortuosa.”
Siobhan olhou para Hood, que apenas deu de ombros. Brough estava apontando para a nota.
“Uma coisa que aprendi no tempo em que fazia caminhadas”, falou, “foi que diz a lenda que Merlim costumava vagar por algumas colinas da Escócia...”
Siobhan estava em na sala de seu apartamento, contemplando a mensagem na tela do laptop. Era a resposta a um e-mail que havia mandado para o Enigmista, informando que estava trabalhando na segunda pista.
“Bem, o que você tem para nós esta noite, Einstein?”
Hood baixou os olhos para os mapas. “Andei pensando no que aquela advogada falou.”
“Harriet?” Siobhan franziu o cenho.
“Ela disse que, segundo a lenda, o mago Merlim andou vagando por algumas colinas da Escócia”, relembrou Hood. “O que significa que talvez a gente esteja procurando uma colina ou montanha.”
“Que seria...?
Hood baixou os olhos para a pista outra vez e começou a ler em voz alta.
“Merlim era um sábio. E o rei Artur era um ouvinte de Merlim. Faz sentido.”
Ela pegou o papel da mão dele e leu mais uma vez. “Mas nós pesquisamos todos os mapas”, contestou.
“Mas não sabíamos o que estávamos procurando. Alguns guias trazem colinas e montanhas relacionadas no final. Para o resto, vamos verificar as coordenadas O20 em cada página.”
“Procurando o que, exatamente?”
“Alguma colina ou montanha que tenham sido cenário para as andanças de Merlim.”
Siobhan concordou. “Você está supondo que se encontrarmos uma dessas colinas nas coordenadas O20 teremos achado o local?”
Hood deu um gole de vinho. “Estou supondo um monte de coisas. Mas é melhor que nada.”
Siobhan pegou um outro mapa, um guia rodoviário da Escócia. Na primeira página, o quadrado O20 era Isle of Man. Isso a deixou irritada: Isle of Man nem ficava na Escócia! Na página seguinte, O20 era Yorkshire Dales.
“Que inferno!”, falou em voz alta.
“O que foi?”
“Esse mapa, é como se o príncipe Charles Edward tivesse ganhado a guerra.”
Foi para a página seguinte, onde O20 era Mull of Kintyre, mas na página seguinte seus olhos se fixaram nas palavras “Loch Fell”. Examinou o quadrado mais detalhadamente: a rodovia M74 e a cidade de Moffat. Ela conhecia Moffat: um lugar tipo cartão-postal com pelo menos um bom hotel, onde havia parado para almoçar. No alto do quadrado O20 viu um pequeno triângulo indicando um pico. O pico chamava-se Hart Fell. Tinha oitocentos e oito metros de altura. Olhou para Hood.
“Será que Merlim não andou vagando por Hart Fell?”
Hood levantou-se e aproximou-se dela. “Isso é fácil de verificar.”
Abriu o laptop e digitou Hart Fell na barra de buscas e depois “enter”. O Google deu a resposta na forma do livro The Quest for Merlin, escrito em 1985 por Nicolai Tolstoy, em que o autor levanta a hipótese de Hart Fell ser a Montanha Negra da lenda do rei Artur. Segundo a resenha, o folclore local sugeria também que Hart Fell fosse a moradia de Merlim, ou Myrddin, o sábio conselheiro e mentor do Rei Artur. Dizia ainda que o mago Merlim teria a capacidade de se transformar em um cervo, animal associado à realeza e à nobreza.
Hood voltou a examinar o mapa, seu ombro tocando o braço de Siobhan. Ela tentou não se afastar, mas foi difícil. “Meu Deus”, ele começou. “É no meio do nada.”
“Talvez seja uma coincidência”, ela sugeriu.
Grant concordou, mas ela percebeu que não estava convencido. “Quadrado O20”, falou. “Cervo da Lei, O20 do Sábio.” Olhou para ela e meneou a cabeça. “Não é coincidência.”
Siobhan ligou a TV e sintonizou no canal do tempo.
“O que está fazendo?”, perguntou Hood.
“Vendo como vai estar o clima amanhã. Não vou subir o Hart Fell debaixo de chuva de jeito nenhum.”

Armanskij teve dificuldade de se habituar ao fato de seu melhor cão de caça ser uma jovem pálida, de uma magreza anoréxica, com cabelos quase raspados e piercings no nariz e nas sobrancelhas. Tinha a tatuagem de uma vespa no pescoço e uma faixa tatuada ao redor do bíceps do braço esquerdo. Nas poucas vezes em que usava uma regata, Armanskji constatara que ela também tinha uma tatuagem maior na omoplata, representando um dragão. Originalmente ruiva, tingira os cabelos de preto. Parecia estar sempre chegando de uma semana de farra na companhia de uma banda de heavy-metal.
Ela não sofria de distúrbios alimentares — Armanskij estava convencido disso. Ao contrário, parecia consumir qualquer tipo de comida. Simplesmente nascera magra, com uma ossatura fina que indicava um aspecto frágil e delicado de menina, com mãos pequenas, tornozelos estreitos e seios que mal despontavam sob as roupas. Tinha vinte e quatro anos, mas parecia ter catorze.
A boca era larga, o nariz pequeno e as maçãs do rosto altas, o que lhe dava um vago ar oriental. Tinha movimentos rápidos e aracnídeos, e quando trabalhava no computador seus dedos voavam excitados sobre as teclas. O corpo não se prestava a uma carreira de modelo, mas, com uma maquiagem adequada, um primeiro plano de seu rosto não faria má figura num cartaz publicitário. It was difficult for Armanskij to get used to the fact that his best hound dog was a pale young girl so thin that she was almost anorectic, with a virtually bald head and piercings at her nose and at her eyebrows. She had a wasp tattooed at the neck and a tattooed strap around her left arm biceps. In the few times she wore a T-shirt, Armanskij could see she had also a bigger tattoo picturing a dragon on the shoulder. Originally red-headed, she had dyed her hair black. She seemed to be always coming back from a week-long bender in the company of a heavy metal band.
She didn’t suffer of any alimentary disease — of this Armanskij was convinced. On the contrary, apparently she would eat any kind of food. She was just born thin, with slender bones and a fragile appearance that made her look like a little girl, with small hands, thin ankles, and breasts that barely showed beneath her clothes. She was twenty-four years old, but she looked as she was fourteen.
Her mouth was wide, her nose was small and her cheekbones were high, which made her look vaguely Oriental. She moved as fast as a spider, and when she worked at the computer her fingers flew enthusiastically over the keyboard. Her body wasn’t fit for a carrier as a model, but with the right make-up, a close-up of her face would not look bad on a publicity add. Although sometimes she painted her lips with a awful black lipstick, and despite her piercings and tattoos, she was… say… attractive. In a totally incomprehensible way.
