April 10, 2006 issue - For millions of Americans, prayer is a contemplative and religious experience. But can it pass the test of science? Not necessarily—at least not if strangers pray for hospital patients. Last week researchers from six academic medical centers released results from a long-awaited study on so-called intercessory prayer and its effect on recovery after coronary-bypass surgery. The scientists divided 1,802 patients into three groups. Two groups were told they may or may not receive prayers. One did, the other didn't, but they both fared the same: half of all patients suffered complications after surgery. The most surprising result turned up in group three: patients who knew they were being prayed for did the worst, with 59 percent having problems. The most common complication: atrial fibrillation or heart flutter.
The $2.4 million study, funded in large part by the John Templeton Foundation, had a number of caveats. Chief among them: no scientist can "control" for the spirituality of others—prayers offered by patients' friends or loved ones. Critics say religion shouldn't be submitted to the rigors of medicine in the first place. "It's a colossal waste of money and effort," says Richard Sloan, professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University. "Scientists should get out of the way and let patients engage in religious practices that comfort them." But Dean Marek, a chaplain at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and a coauthor of the study, sees a positive outcome: if the trial inspires talk about prayer, "I'm sure God will be really pleased."

تعبتر الصلاة للملايين من الامريكيين تجربة تأملية و دينية و لكن هل تستطيع هذه الصلاة ان تجتاز امتحان العلم؟ ليس بالضرورة. على الاقل, ليس عندما يقوم الغرباء بالصلاة من أجل مرضى المشفى. في الاسبوع الماضي قام باحثون من ستة مراكز طبية جامعية بنشر نتائج لدراسة، طال انتضارها كثيرا، عن ما يسمى "بالصلاة التشفعية" و أثرها على الشفاء بعد جراحة القلب " تحويل المجرى الشرياني". فقد قسم العلماء المرضى البالغ عددهم 1,802 مريضاّ الى ثلاثة مجموعات . تم أ خبار مجموعتان منهم بأنه ربما قد تؤدى أو لا تؤدى الصلاة من أجلهم. واحدة من هاتين المجموعتين قد تم قعلاّ تأدية الصلاة من أجلها, بينما لم تؤدى الصلاة للمجموعة الأخرى, ولكن كلاهما دفعا نفس الفاتورة , حيث عانى نصف المرضى من كلا المجموعتين من مضاعفات يعد الجراحة , ولكن النتيجة الأكثر تفاجاّ جائت من المجموعة الثالثة : أى المرضى الذين كانوا على دراية با لصلاة من أجلهم فقد خرجوا بأسوأ النتائج حيث ان 59 % عانوا من مشاكل و مضاعفات كان اكثرها شيوعاّ " خفقان القلب " كان لهذه الدراسة التي بلغت كلفتها 2.4 مليون دولار والممولة بقسمها الكبير من مؤسسة " جان تيمبلتون " عدد من التحذيرات و في مقدمتها: لا يوجد عالم بمقدوره " التحكم " بروحانية الأخرين-أي بالصلاة المؤدات من أصدقاء المرضى و محبيهم. يقول النقاد: لا ينبغي ان يوضع الدين في محك الطب بالدرجة الأولى. " أنه تبذير هائل للنقود و الجهد و ينبغي على العلماء ان لا يحشروا أنفسهم في هذا و أن يدعوأ المرضى من ممارسة طقوسهم الدينية كما يحلوا لهم " هذا ما يقوله ريتشارد سلون, أستاذ الطب السلوكي في جامعة كلومبيا. أما دين ماريك, وهو قس في مركز مايو للأبحاث الطبية في روشستر بولاية مينيسوتا و المشارك في هذه الدراسه, يرى مردوداّ ايجابياّ لها حيث يقول: اذا كانت هذه التجربة تثير الحديث عن الصلاة " فأنا متأكد بأن الله حقاّ سيكون مسروراّ "
