Source text - Dutch Ontwerpen in Nederland in de ‘Second Golden Age’ Nederlands ‘design’, 1885-1935
Net als in andere Europese landen ontstond er in Nederland in de loop van de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw onvrede over het tot dan toe vanzelfsprekende gebruik van stijlelementen uit het verleden. Toen in de jaren 1870 de Nederlandse economie, na decennia van stagnatie, weer begon te groeien, groeide er ook een nieuw zelfbewustzijn op cultureel gebied. Velen gingen beseffen dat nostalgisch terugkijken naar het verleden – en dan in het bijzonder naar de ‘Gouden’ (17de) eeuw – geen bruikbaar recept was om de opkomende industrialisatie en de steeds sneller gaande modernisering van de maatschappij te lijf te gaan. Een ‘nieuwe’ tijd had een ‘nieuwe’ kunst nodig, met een eigen vormentaal die niet ‘klakkeloos’ kon worden gebaseerd op historische voorbeelden. Al gauw werd ingezien dat het daarvoor nodig was de opleidingsmogelijkheden op het gebied van de kunstnijverheid te moderniseren. Zo werd aan de Polytechnische School in Delft (de voorloper van de huidige Technische Universiteit aldaar) in 1874 de architectenopleiding uitgebreid met een cursus voor het ontwerpen van decoraties en ornamenten, met als hoofddocent Adolf le Comte (1850-1921). Le Comte was in Delft opgeleid, maar had daarna een studiereis door Duitsland gemaakt en enige tijd in Parijs gewerkt. Enkele jaren later, in 1879, werd in Haarlem de eerste echte kunstnijverheidsschool opgericht. Een belangrijke impuls voor de modernisering van het kunstnijverheidsonderwijs kwam van architect P.J.H. Cuypers (1827-1921), die weliswaar zelf nog de neogotiek aanhing, maar hierbij wel naar een zo groot mogelijke stijlzuiverheid streefde. Bij de bouw van een van zijn grootste projecten, het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (gebouwd 1877-85), werd hij sterk gehinderd door een gebrek aan vakbekwame steenhouwers en decoratieschilders in deze stad en daarom startte hij in 1879 met een meer op de praktijk gerichte opleiding, waarbij hij de organisatievorm van middeleeuwse bouwloodsen als voorbeeld nam. Hieruit kwam in 1881 de Quellinusschool voort. Verder werd hij docent aan een tweede nieuwe, wat hogere en meer op het ontwerpen gerichte opleiding: de Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid, die ook in 1881 in Amsterdam van start ging. In de loop van de jaren daarna kwamen in andere steden eveneens meer op de praktijk gerichte opleidingen tot stand.
Afscheid van het historisme
De al even genoemde stad Delft was niet alleen als zetel van de Polytechnische school maar ook in een ander opzicht voor de vernieuwing van de kunstnijverheid van belang. Hier stond de laatst overgeblevene ceramiekfabriek van de beroemde Delftse aardewerkindustrie uit de 17de en 18de eeuw: De Porceleyne Fles. Deze fabriek werd in 1876 nieuw leven ingeblazen door zakenman Joost Thooft, die Le Comte als hoofdontwerper aantrok. Diens eerste ontwerpen waren nog voornamelijk op historische voorbeelden geïnspireerd, maar indirect zou hij toch de aanzet geven tot de een daadwerkelijke stilistische vernieuwing in de Nederlandse kunstnijverheid. Een van zijn medewerkers bij De Porceleyne Fles was namelijk de uit Duitsland afkomstige Wilhelm Wolff von Gudenberg (18551930), die met de in Delft opgedane kennis in 1883 in Den Haag een eigen ceramiekfabriek oprichtte: Rozenburg. Hij trok als ontwerper de al wat oudere architect Th.A.C. Colenbrander (1841-1930) aan, die tijdens een jarenlang verblijf in Parijs sterk onder de indruk was gekomen van de daar tentoongestelde kunst uit het Nabije en Verre Oosten. Op basis hiervan ontwierp hij tussen 1884 en 1889 een groot aantal modellen en decors voor de fabriek, die nauwelijks meer herinnerden aan historische voorbeelden (zie cat. nr. 00). Al was het commerciële succes van Colenbranders ontwerpen niet erg groot, ze trokken meteen de aandacht van allen die in vernieuwing geïnteresseerd waren en lieten zien dat het wel degelijk in de vormgeving mogelijk was los te komen van het verleden. Ook Le Comte werd hierdoor geïnspireerd om in de jaren ’90, in nauwe samenwerking met de technische staf van De Porceleyne Fles, nieuwe, meer eigentijdse decoraties voor deze fabriek te ontwerpen (zie cat. nrs. 00-00). In Den Haag was ook de graficus Theo van Hoytema (1863-1917) werkzaam, wiens vrolijke prentenboeken naar sprookjes van Andersen (het eerste verscheen in 1891) als vroegste uitingen van de vernieuwingsbeweging in de boekkunst gelden (zie cat. nr. 00). In deze boeken, waarvan hij zowel de plaatjes als de tekst eigenhandig lithografeerde, is een sterke inspiratie door Japanse kunst zichtbaar. Vanaf 1901 had hij ook veel succes met zijn gelithografeerde kalenders met taferelen uit flora en fauna (cat. nrs. 00-00), die veel andere grafici tot navolging hebben aangezet.
Inmiddels was het centrum van de vernieuwingsbeweging van Delft en Den Haag naar Amsterdam verschoven, waar diverse leerlingen van Cuypers in de loop van de jaren ’90 voor zichzelf waren begonnen. Onder hen het drietal vrienden Gerrit Dijsselhof (1866-1924), Theo Nieuwenhuis (18661951) en Carel Lion Cachet (1864-1945), die in 1892 van zich deden spreken met een drietal diploma’s (van ieder één) waarin zowel qua techniek (ze gebruikten de houtsnede, een destijds geheel in onbruik geraakte techniek) als qua vormgeving gebroken werd met alle op dat moment gangbare opvattingen op typografisch gebied. Kort daarop gingen ze voor het vervaardigen van wandbespanningen en bekledingsstoffen experimenteren met batikken (een oude, uit NederlandsIndië afkomstige techniek voor het decoreren van textiel). Hun werk trok al gauw de aandacht en in 1898 werden ze door de firma E.J. van Wisselingh & Co, die tot dan toe alleen actief als kunsthandel was geweest, uitgenodigd om gedrieën hoofdontwerpers te worden van een nieuw op te richten werkplaats voor interieurinrichting. Ondertussen hadden twee oud-medewerkers van Cuypers, K.P.C. de Bazel (1869-1923; zie cat. nr. 00) en J.L.M. Lauweriks(1864-1932; zie cat. nr. 00), al in 1895 op eigen initiatief de eerste stappen op het terrein van de interieurarchitectuur gezet en een eigen bureau gestart, met als medewerker de edelsmid Frans Zwollo (1872-1945; zie afb. 00).
De ‘rationele’ of ‘constructieve’ richting
Zowel de firma Van Wisselingh als het bureau van De Bazel en Lauweriks richtten zich op een kapitaalkrachtige elite en gebruikten voor hun producten bij voorkeur luxe en dus kostbare materialen. Andere Amsterdamse ontwerpers streefden juist naar minder dure producten die voor een breder publiek betaalbaar waren. Zij ontwikkelden daarbij een sobere, strakke vormentaal, waarbij nog maar spaarzaam decoraties werden toegepast, die bovendien zo werden aangebracht dat ze de constructie van het voorwerp accentueerden. Voorman van deze zogenoemde ‘rationele’ of ‘constructieve’ richting in de kunstnijverheid werd de architect. H.P. Berlage (1856-1934), die zijn opleiding niet in Amsterdam, maar aan de Polytechnische School in Zürich had gekregen, waar de ideeën van Gotfried Semper een zwaar stempel op het onderwijs drukten. Berlage bracht de constructieve principes overtuigend naar voren in zowel het ex- als het interieur van zijn beroemde Beursgebouw aan het Damrak in Amsterdam (gebouwd 1897-1903), dat door velen als het eerste belangrijke, waarlijk moderne gebouw in Nederland wordt gezien. Behalve als architect was Berlage ook actief als ontwerper van meubelen, tapijten, allerlei gebruiksvoorwerpen, boekbanden en drukwerk (zie cat. nrs. 00-00). Samen met onder meer Willem Hoeker (1862- na 1906) en Jac. van den Bosch (1868-1948) richtte hij in 1900 de coöperatieve woninginrichtingsfirma ’t Binnenhuis op, waarbij zich verschillende andere aanhangers van de constructieve richting aansloten, onder wie Jan Eisenloeffel (1876-1957), Chris Lebeau (1878-1945), Klaas van Leeuwen (1868-1935), Willem Penaat (1875-1957) en Georg Rueter (1875-1966). Zelfs De Bazel en Lauweriks associeerden zich met ’t Binnenhuis, hoewel hun werk niet direct binnen de constructieve richting past. Datzelfde geldt ook voor de ceramiek van Willem Brouwer (1877-1933; zie cat. nrs. 00-00), voor wiens fabriek ‘t Binnenhuis ook een tijdlang als verkooppunt fungeerde. Zijn zeer eigen wijze van vormgeven, waarbij het gebruik van de sgrafittotechniek een belangrijk element was, sluit echter bij geen enkele richting direct aan. Binnen een jaar onderstond er helaas onenigheid tussen enerzijds Berlage en Van den Bosch, die de directie vormden, en anderszijds de overige deelgenoten, waarvan de meeste de samenwerking opzegden. Een aantal uitgetredenen, onder wie Eisenloeffel, Lebeau en Penaat, richtten in 1903 een eigen firma, De Woning, op. Berlage en Van den Bosch zetten de firma alleen voort, totdat de eerste in 1913 in dienst trad bij de handels- en transportfirma van het echtpaar Kröller-Müller en naar Den Haag verhuisde. Van den Bosch bleef daarna als enige directielid over en wist ’t Binnenhuis nog tot 1929 in bedrijf te houden. Nauw gelieerd aan ’t Binnenhuis was een andere firma: Amstelhoek. Deze firma was in 1898 opgericht door de al even genoemde Willem Hoeker, als dochteronderneming van het edelsmeedbedrijf Hoeker & Zoon, waarvan hij een van de directeuren was. Hoeker ontwierp zelf niet, maar was wel een overtuigd aanhanger van de constructieve richting. Amstelhoek bestond uit drie werkplaatsen: een voor ceramiek, met als hoofdontwerpers Lambertus Zijl (1866-1947) en Chris van der Hoef (1875-1933), een voor metaalwerk, met als hoofdontwerper Eisenloeffel, en een voor meubels, met als hoofdontwerper Penaat. Het bedrijf werd aanvankelijk gehuisvest in Amsterdam, maar de metaal- en meubelwerkplaatsen werden vanwege ruimtegebrek in 1900 in Haarlem gevestigd. Doordat Hoeker een slecht financiëel manager was, ging Amstelhoek al in 1903 failliet, maar in de paar jaar van zijn bestaan heeft de firma als ‘boegbeeld’ van de constructieve richting gefunctioneerd. Al in 1902, nog voor het faillissement, werd de meubelwerkplaats in Haarlem verkocht
aan de firma Onder den Sint Maarten (in 1899 in Zaltbommel opgericht door J.A. Pool, die leerling van Adolf le Comte in Delft was geweest). Hoofdontwerper van deze firma, die zich nu definitief in Haarlem vestigde, was Karel Sluyterman (1863-1931; eveneens een leerling van Le Comte en later diens opvolger in Delft), wiens ontwerpen nauw aansloten bij die van Berlage, Penaat en Eisenloeffel. Datzelfde geld voor metaalontwerper J.C. Stoffels (1874-1951), die voordat hij in 1903 bij Onder den Sint Maarten in dienst trad, nauw met Eisenloeffel had samengewerkt. Van Amstelhoek bleef alleen de ceramiekwerkplaats in Amsterdam bestaan; deze werd onder de naam Voorheen Amstelhoek door nieuwe eigenaren tot 1910 voortgezet. De fabriek werd toen overgenomen door een andere Amsterdamse ceramiekfabriek die de ‘constructieve’ beginselen aanhing: De Distel, waar ceramist Bert Nienhuis (1973-1960) vanaf 1901 de artistieke leiding had (zie cat. nr. 00). Overigens moeten begrippen als eenvoud en soberheid met de nodige relativering beschouwd worden. In de vormgeving van textiel, affiches, boekbanden en gebruiksgrafiek was ook binnen de constructieve richting vaak sprake van een zeer doorwerkte ornamentiek, waarbij het hele vlak werd gevuld. Maar de decoratie was dan meestal wel gebaseerd op een streng geometrisch grondsysteem, waarvan alle onderdelen werden afgeleid, zoals te zien is in de boekbanden en typografie van Georg Rueter, Jan Bertus Heukelom (1875-1966) en Sjoerd de Roos (1877-1962; zie cat. nrs. 00-00). Tot de meest ver doorgevoerde voorbeelden hiervan behoren de kamerschermen met gebatikte zijde bespanningen van Chris Lebeau (cat. nr. 00), die een ware ‘horror vacui’ tentoon spreiden. Wie zich heeft verdiept in de gecompliceerde batiktechniek, die veel handvaardigheid vereist, vraagt zich bij het zien van deze stukken onwillekeurig af hoe het mogelijk is dat iemand dit in zijn eentje gemaakt heeft. Maar Lebeau, gold dan ook als de expert bij uitstek in het batikken, dat vanwege de herkomst ervan door veel Nederlandse kunstenaars werd beoefend. Als docent aan de Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem (1904-1906 en 1908-1914) heeft hij vele jongere kunstenaars (onder wie Jan Kreunen, 18921918, en Mathé van der Weiden, 1890-1964; zie cat. nrs. 00-00 en 00-00) met de principes van het ontwerpen op een geometrische grondslag vertrouwd gemaakt, evenals met de techniek van het batikken.
Art Nouveau
De ‘constructieve’ richting, met zijn strakke, geometrische vormentaal, werd en wordt door velen gezien als de meest specifiek Nederlandse bijdrage aan de Art Nouveau. Daarnaast waren er echter diverse ontwerpers en bedrijven die zich lieten inspireren door de vloeiende golvende lijnen van de internationale, en meer in het bijzonder de Franse en Belgische Art Nouveau. Het bekendste voorbeeld is zonder twijfel Rozenburg, waar onder leiding van J. Jurriaan Kok (1861-1919), die sinds 1895 directeur van de fabriek was, in 1898/99 het zogenoemde ‘eierschaalporselein’ werd ontwikkeld. Voor dit tere porselein ontwierp Kok zelf de modellen in een sierlijke, plastische stijl, terwijl de verfijnde decors met planten en dieren werden bedacht en uitgevoerd door een aantal zeer getalenteerde schilders, van wie Sam Schellink (1876-1958) een van de bekendste is (zie cat. nr. 00). Ook de affiches en boekbanden van Jan Toorop (1858-1928), die vooral als ‘vrij’ schilder en tekenaar van gecompliceerde symbolistische voorstellingen furore heeft gemaakt, sluiten nauw aan bij de internationale Art Nouveau (zie cat. nrs. 00-00). In iets mindere mate geldt dat ook voor het werk van Simon Moulijn (1866-1948; zie cat. nrs. 00-00). Desondanks werd hun werk ook binnen constructieve kringen gewaardeerd; Berlage nodigde Toorop zelfs uit om tegeltableaus te ontwerpen voor zijn beursgebouw. Op het terrein van de grafische vormgeving – en in het bijzonder op dat van de boekverzorging - was de stilistische variatie trouwens veel groter dan in andere sectoren, aangezien de meeste uitgevers commerciële belangen lieten prevaleren boven artistieke ideologieën.
Overigens werd ook in andere bedrijfstakken geprobeerd om uit commerciële overwegingen de constructieve beginselen te combineren met een wat luxere, rijkere ornamentiek. Vooral wat grotere firma’s boden vaak producten in meerdere stijlen aan, meestal naar ontwerpen van verschillende (freelance) ontwerpers. Dat was onder meer het geval bij ceramiekfabrieken als De Weduwe Brantjes en Haga in Purmerend (cat. nr. 00 en 00), Zuid-Holland in Gouda (cat. nr. 00), Amphora in Oegstgeest (cat.nr. 00) en nog diverse andere. Een succesvol ontwerper als Chris van der Hoef kon daarom voor verschillende fabrieken tegelijk werken. Ook in de grafische industrie werden verschillende stijlen naast elkaar gebruikt. Zo verscheen de Gijsbrecht van Aemstel-map van Antoon Derkinderen (18581925; cat. nr. 00), met zijn strakke, gestileerde vormgeving, bij dezelfde uitgeverij als de Halewijn-map van Hendrikus Jansen (1866-1921; cat. nr. 00), die juist gekenmerkt wordt door een zwierige, op de Franse Art Nouveau geïnspireerde vormgeving. In andere sectoren, met name in de edelsmeedbranche en in de luxe metaalwarenindustrie (bijvoorbeeld bij de firma Daalderop in Tiel; zie
cat. nr. 00), bleven sommige bedrijven nog lang gelijktijdig in zowel moderne als historiserende stijlen produceren. Voorbeelden van Internationale Art Nouveau zelf waren ook in Nederland te koop, onder meer bij de firma Arts & Crafts aan de Kneuterdijk in Den Haag. Deze firma werd in 1898 opgericht door de zakenman Johan Uiterwijk. De zaak stond in verbinding met de befaamde kunsthandel L’Art Nouveau van Siegfried Bing in Parijs, via wie er bij Arts & Crafts o.a. glaswerk van de Amerikaan Louis Comfort Tiffany, meubelen van de Belg Henri van de Velde en tapijten van de Engelsman Frank Brangwyn werden verkocht. De belangrijkste Nederlandse ontwerper van Arts & Crafts was, althans in de eerste jaren, Johan Thorn Prikker (1868-1932). Deze had zijn opleiding aan de Haagse academie gekregen, waar hij echter in 1889 voortijdig vanaf was gestuurd. In 1892 maakte hij kennis met Van de Velde, die hem bij de Belgische avantgarde-vereniging Les Vingt introduceerde. Onder invloed van Van de Velde keerde Thorn Prikker zich af van de 'vrije' kunst en ging zich toeleggen op verschillende terreinen van de toegepaste kunst. Hij begon o.a. te experimenteren met het batikken (een oude, uit NederlandsIndië afkomstige techniek voor het decoreren van textiel), met grafisch vormgeven (zie cat. nr. 00) en met het ontwerpen van meubels. Al gauw werd hij daarom door Uiterwijk, die bevriend met hem was, gevraagd medewerker van Arts & Crafts te worden (zie cat. nr. 00). In 1900 verliet hij deze firma echter alweer, waarna hij als ontwerper werd opgevolgd door Lebeau, die echter maar enkele maanden aan de firma verbonden bleef. Daarna namen de architect Chris Wegerif (1859-1920), en diens echtgenote Agatha Wegerif-Gravestein (1867-1944), het heft in handen. Hun ontwerpen kregen in Nederland niet veel bijval, maar hadden wel succes bij buitenlandse critici, o.a. op de spraakmakende ‘Internationale Tentoonstelling van Moderne Decoratieve Kunst’ in Turijn in 1902. Door een gebrek aan zakelijk inzicht van Uiterwijk ging de firma desondanks het jaar daarop failliet.
De Amsterdamse School
Rond 1910 begonnen diverse kunstenaars zich langzamerhand wat te bezinnen op de stijlprincipes die rond 1900 gemeengoed waren geworden. Daarbij werden vooral vraagtekens gezet bij de eenvoud en soberheid van de constructieve richting, die vaak gepropageerd was op basis van morele en politieke (met name socialistische) uitgangspunten. Kostbare, exotische materialen en een wat drukkere decoratie werden weer minder taboe en sommige ontwerpers begonnen zelfs weer af en toe een historiserend element of motief in hun ontwerpen op te nemen. Zo maakte Eisenloeffel, na een kort verblijf in Duitsland in 1908, een forse stilistische ommezwaai, waarbij hij afstand nam van de soberheid en strakheid van zijn eerdere werk. Ook directeur J.A. Pool gooide rond deze tijd bij Onder den Sint Maarten het roer om en ging weer meubels in ‘oudhollandse’ stijl op de markt brengen. Kenmerkend voor deze ontwikkelingen zijn verder onder meer de bekledings- en wandbespanningsstoffen met hun elegante, licht historiserende patronen die Theo Nieuwenhuis tussen ca. 1910 en 1915 ontwierp (cat. nrs. 00-00). Ook de textiel en het reclame- en verpakkingsdrukwerk van de wat jongere Jan Kreunen uit de jaren 1914-1917 passen goed in deze overgangsfase. Kreunen was leerling van Lebeau in Haarlem geweest en had daarna enige tijd in Darmstadt gewerkt als assistent van J.E. Margold, die banden had met de Wiener Werkstätte. Het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog dreef hem echter in 1914 terug naar Nederland. Ook J.L.M. Lauweriks, Frans Zwollo en Bert Nienhuis, die door de Duitse mecenas Karl Ernst Osthaus naar Hagen waren gehaald (in respectievelijk 1909, 1910 en 1912) om les te geven aan de door hem opgerichte kunstnijverheidsschool aldaar, keerden vanwege de oorlog weer terug naar Nederland. Ook voor andere kunstenaars was de Eerste Wereldoorlog van grote invloed op het verloop van hun loopbaan. Al bleef Nederland neutraal in 1914 en daardoor gespaard van geweld en ellende, de oorlog ging allerminst ongemerkt voorbij. Het wegvallen van een groot deel van de export in luxe goederen betekende een forse economische terugslag, die vooral in de ceramiekindustrie hard aankwam. Zo moest Rozenburg in 1914 sluiten. Bovendien werden vele internationale contacten afgebroken en werd reizen naar het buitenland vrijwel onmogelijk. Daarnaast werden velen door de gruwelijkheden van de oorlog geschokt in hun geloof in vooruitgang en vernieuwing. Het werd pijnlijk duidelijk dat de maatschappelijke veranderingen waarop, met name in progressieve kringen, was gehoopt er voorlopig niet kwamen. Daarmee viel ook de ideologische basis weg onder de vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee voor 1914 naar artistieke vooruitgang was gestreefd.
Een duidelijke stilistische kentering werd het eerst zichtbaar in de architectuur. Op het streven naar een toenemende decoratieve versobering, dat rond 1900 met Berlage's beursgebouw was ingezet, ontstond rond 1914 een reactie bij een groep jongere architecten, die als de 'Amsterdamse School' de kunstgeschiedenis zou ingaan. Deze architecten, van wie Michel de Klerk (1884-1923) en Piet Kramer
(1881-1969; zie cat. nr. 00) de bekendste zijn, ontwikkelden een plastische, expressieve bouwstijl, waarin weer meer plaats voor beeldhouwkunst werd ingeruimd. Een van de eerste en meteen ook beroemdste representatieve gebouwen van de Amsterdamse School is het 'Scheepvaarthuis' aan de Prins Hendrikkade te Amsterdam. Dit forse pand, in 1912-1917 gebouwd om de kantoren van enkele scheepvaartmaatschappijen te huisvesten, was ontworpen door J.M. van der Mey (1878-1949), met medewerking van De Klerk en Kramer (zij waren hun loopbaan gedrieën op hetzelfde architectenbureau begonnen). Het werd van buiten rijk versierd met sculptuur, waarvoor een speciaal beeldhouwatelier op de bouwplaats werd ingericht. Als hoofd van dit atelier werd H.A. van den Eijnde (1869-1939) aangesteld, die zich via dit project zou profileren als een van de meest vooraanstaande Nederlandse makers van architecturale beeldhouwkunst van het interbellum. Daarnaast heeft hij echter ook meubels en zilverwerk ontworpen (zie cat. nr. 00). Zijn belangrijkste assistent was Hildo Krop (1884-1970) die zich eveneens op meerdere terreinen van de toegepaste kunst heeft begeven (zie cat. nr.00). Ook aan de interieurkunst gaf de Amsterdamse School nieuwe impulsen en ook hier betekende dat een herwaardering van de decoratie, die nu weer onbekommerd luxueus en overdadig mocht zijn. Na het Scheepvaarthuis werd het bioscooptheater Tuschinki van architect H. de Jong uit 1921 het belangrijkste voorbeeld van een representatief gebouw in Amsterdamse School-stijl. In dit gebouw komen de kenmerken van deze stijl het duidelijkst en meest volledig tot uiting. Het uitbundig gedecoreerde interieur naar ontwerp van Chris Bartels (1889-1967), Pieter den Besten (1894-1973) en Jaap Gidding (1887-1955), dat onlangs geheel is gerestaureerd, laat prachtig zien dat er een geheel andere wind was gaan waaien. Kunst mocht weer een feest voor het oog zijn en kunstenaars hoefden niet meer zo nodig de maatschappij te verbeteren. Vooral Gidding profileerde zich met zijn werk in deze bioscoop; hij hier liet hij voor het eerst op grote schaal de stijl zien waardoor hij bekend is geworden en die gekenmerkt wordt door een drukke en veelkleurige mengeling van abstracte patronen en gestileerde plant-, bloem- en diermotieven. In het bijzonder zijn vloerkleden oogstten zoveel waardering dat hij een veelgevraagd tapijtontwerper werd, wiens ontwerpen meestal werden uitgevoerd door de Koninklijke Vereenigde Tapijtfabrieken, sinds 1919 de belangrijkste producent op dit gebied in Nederland (zie cat.nr. 00). De architecten van de Amsterdamse School namen echter niet in alles afstand tot hun voorgangers. Zo waren ook zij sterk gehecht aan het concept van het 'Gesamtkunstwerk' en werkten zij graag samen met kunstenaars uit verschillende disciplines. Hun brede belangstelling komt goed tot uiting in het maandblad Wendingen, dat in 1918 voor het eerst uitkwam en dat lange tijd als spreekbuis van de Amsterdammers functioneerde (het heeft tot 1931 bestaan). Behalve door de gevarieerde inhoud viel het ook op door de bijzondere typografie ervan (zie cat.nr. 00), welke verzorgd werd door architect H.Th. Wijdeveld (1885-1987), die tot 1925 hoofdredacteur was. De omslagen liet hij lithograferen door een reeks van gerenommeerde kunstenaars (zie afb. 00-00), onder wie K.P.C. de Bazel, H.A. van den Eijnde, Chris Lebeau, C.A. Lion Cachet, Richard Roland Holst (1868-1938) en Jan Sluijters (18811957). Zij behoorden bijna allen tot de generatie die al rond 1900 hun loopbaan was begonnen (merendeels als aanhangers van de constructieve richting), maar hadden er weinig moeite mee hun stijl enigszins aan te passen aan de nieuwe artistieke smaak.
Overigens spreek uit veel Amsterdamse School-gebouwen een zeker eclecticisme, vooral in de interieurs. Zo omvatte het Scheepvaarthuis ondermeer betimmeringen, wandbespanningen en lampen naar ontwerp van Theo Nieuwenhuis en glas-in-lood-ramen naar ontwerp van C.A. Lion Cachet. Dat hun werk zich zonder veel moeite liet inpassen in een dergelijk ambitieus Amsterdamse Schoolconcept geeft wel aan dat er van een echte breuk met de periode ervoor geen sprake was. Lion Cachet was trouwens min of meer de 'huisontwerper' van een aantal van de scheepvaartmaatschappijen die in het gebouw gehuisvest werden. Al vanaf het begin van de eeuw was hij werkzaam als ontwerper van (delen van) de passagiersverblijven van oceaanstomers en met zijn bonte, plastische vormgeving liep hij in deze interieurs al duidelijk vooruit op de Amsterdamse School. Zijn scheepsinterieurs uit de jaren ’20 zijn naast de inrichting van het Tuschinski-theater de belangrijkste voorbeelden van interieurkunst uit de Nederlandse Art Deco. Helaas is er niets meer van over, op enige losse meubelen, een paar onderdelen van betimmeringen, wat stukken decoratief beeldhouwwerk en enkele tegeltableau’s na (zie cat. nr. 00). In wezen was de vormgeving van de Amsterdamse School niet echt vernieuwend, al leek dat op eerste gezicht wel zo. Er werd voortgeborduurd op elementen uit zowel de constructieve richting als de Art Nouveau, die slechts verder werden gestileerd en geabstraheerd en, na er wat oriëntalisme en historisme door heen te hebben gemengd, werden overgoten met een expressionistische sausje. Oudere ontwerpers, zoals Lion Cachet, Lebeau, Nieuwenhuis, Jac. van den Bosch en Jan Eisenloeffel,konden daarom vrij gemakkelijk aansluiten. Desondanks heeft de Amsterdamse School een
duidelijk eigen gezicht gekregen en kan deze stroming gezien kan worden als een zelfstandige, Nederlandse variant van de internationale Art Deco. Dat eigen gezicht is niet alleen in de gebouwen van de Amsterdamse School-architecten goed te zien, maar ook in de meubels, het huisraad en de toegepaste grafiek die ze ontwierpen wanneer ze daar de kans voor kregen (zie cat. nrs. 00 en 00). Een van de meest exuberante ontwerpers uit hun kring was de reeds genoemde Wijdeveld, die als architect niet veel opvallends tot stand heeft gebracht maar als gangmaker en ideeënleverancier een van de meest spraakmakende figuren binnen deze stroming is geweest. Tot zijn bekendste projecten behoort de inrichting van het Nederlandse paviljoen op de ‘Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes’ te Parijs in 1925 (zie cat. nr. 00). Al namen er ook verscheidene kunstenaars van de oudere garde met succes aan deze tentoonstelling deel, onder wie Van den Bosch, Eisenloeffel en Lion Cachet, het beeld dat deze tentoonstelling uitstraalde - vooral dankzij Wijdevelds haast sculpturale vormgeving - was dat de Amsterdamse School de dominante stroming in de Nederlandse toegepaste kunst van dat moment was.
De Stijl
Het is dan ook nauwelijks voor te stellen dat Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) op dat moment al zijn befaamde stoel van latten en planken in primaire kleuren had ontworpen, zozeer lijkt deze uit een volledig ander tijdperk te komen (cat. nr. 00). Rietveld was de belangrijkste vertegenwoordiger op design-gebied van de tegenpool van de Amsterdamse School: de Stijl-groep. Deze groep, zo genoemd naar de spreekbuis ervan, het tijdschrift De Stijl (dat tussen 1918 en 1931 heeft bestaan), was geen officiële vereniging, maar een losse groepering van min of meer gelijkgestemde kunstenaars. Wat hen bond was een streven naar een zo groot mogelijke eenvoud en zuiverheid in de beeldende kunst. De groep is tegenwoordig internationaal beroemd en wordt algemeen gezien als een van de belangrijkste exponenten van de Nederlandse kunst van de 20ste eeuw, maar was in de tijd zelf slechts een vrij marginaal fenomeen, dat door velen niet al te serieus werd genomen. Bovendien waren de idealen van de ‘voormannen’ van de groep, Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) en Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931, de hoofdredacteur van De Stijl), zo hooggestemd, dat er weinig prioriteit werd gegeven aan iets dat direct op het dagelijkse gebruik gericht was, zoals design. Naast de meubels van Rietveld en J.J.P. Oud (1890-1963) en de tapijten en grafische vormgeving van Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) en Vilmos Huszár (1884-1960) is er dan ook niet zoveel echte ‘Stijl-design’ te vinden. Nog het meest in de buurt daarvan komt het werk van Willem Gispen (1890-1981), die vooral bekend is geworden door zijn gebruik van moderne materialen als staal en glas, die hij in zijn eigen bedrijf verwerkte (cat. nrs 00-00). Zijn vrijwel ornamentloze, functionalistische meubelen en lampen sloegen al wel vroeg aan, maar dat kwam omdat hij zich in de eerste plaats richtte op het inrichten van bedrijfspanden en kantoren. In ruimtes waar gewerkt moest worden, werd een luxe, drukke vormgeving immers niet noodzakelijk en zelfs minder gewenst geacht. Behalve op Gispen hebben de ideeën van de Stijl-groep (die trouwens voor een niet onbelangrijk deel geënt waren op het gedachtengoed van Berlage en andere ‘constructieven’) op nog verscheidene andere ontwerpers invloed uitgeoefend, maar dan in meer afgezwakte vorm. Zo werkte er in Den Haag een groep interieurontwerpers (onder wie Cornelis van der Sluys, 1881-1944, en Henk Wouda, 1885-1945; zie cat. nr. 00-00) die, veel minder rigoureus dan Rietveld, maar daarom met meer succes, de uitbundigheid van de Amsterdamse School afwezen. Hun grote voorbeeld was de Amerikaanse architect Frank Lloyd Wright, maar ze hadden ook veel eerbied voor Berlage, die zich in 1913 in Den Haag had gevestigd. Een behoorlijke verspreiding had ook het gematigde functionalisme van de meubelfabriek L.O.V.(Labor Omnia Vincit), die in 1910 in Oosterbeek bij Arnhem werd opgericht door de idealistische ondernemer Gerrit Pelt en tot 1935 heeft bestaan. Voor deze fabriek, die als een van de eerste bedrijven in Nederland de arbeiders mee liet delen in de winst, was Johannes Muntendam (1882-1938) in de jaren ’20 de belangrijkste ontwerper (cat. nr. 00).
Glaswerk en ceramiek na 1915
Ook bij de vormgeving van glaswerk voor huishoudelijk gebruik was de invloed van de Amsterdamse School niet zo dominant. Ongetwijfeld ligt dit voor een belangrijk deel aan de aard van het materiaal, dat niet direct uitnodigt tot een drukke, bonte vormgeving, maar eerder tot helderheid en eenvoud. Het had echter ook te maken met de smaak van P.M. Cochius, de vooruitstrevende en idealistische directeur van de Glasfabriek Leerdam, welk bedrijf in deze periode de belangrijkste glaswerkproducent in Nederland werd (tot dan toe werd hier geen glaswerk van enig artistiek belang geproduceerd). Vanaf
1915 liet Cochius door verscheidene gerenommeerde ontwerpers en architecten, onder wie K.P.C. de Bazel, H.P. Berlage, Chris Lanooy (1881-1948), Chris Lebeau, Cornelis de Lorm (1875-1942) en Jaap Gidding, gebruiks- en sierglas ontwerpen. Een van de meest succesvolle ontwerpers voor Leerdam zou echter Andries Copier (1901-1994) worden, wiens talent al op jeugdige leeftijd door Cochius werd onderkend. Na op kosten van de fabriek te zijn opgeleid ontwierp Copier in 1922/23 zijn eerste drinkservies, dat in 1925 met een zilveren medaille werd bekroond op de 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels' te Parijs. Na dit servies zouden er nog vele volgen, waarbij Copiers vormgeving steeds verder zou versoberen. Andere glasontwerpers werden door zijn voorbeeld eveneens aangezet tot een meer zakelijke en functionele vormgeving. Overigens werd in Leerdam niet alleen serieglaswerk geproduceerd, maar werden er ook unica vervaardigd, zowel door Copier als door andere ontwerpers, met name Lanooy en Lebeau. Dergelijke unica waren puur ambachtelijk vervaardigde kunstvoorwerpen, die tot stand kwamen in nauwe samenwerking tussen kunstenaars en glasblazers. Het eindresultaat was meestal niet op een duidelijk vooropgezet plan gebaseerd, maar ‘groeide’ tijdens het werkproces haast spontaan. Behalve tot prachtige en vaak zeer verrassende artistieke resultaten, leidde dit ook tot allerlei nieuwe vondsten met betrekking tot materiaalgebruik en technieken. Lebeau, die na een meningsverschil in 1925 de samenwerking met Leerdam opzegde, zou met veel van deze vondsten verder experimenteren in de fabriek van Ludwig Moser und Söhne in Adolf (bij Winterberg) in Bohemen (zie cat. nrs. 00-00).
In de aardewerkindustrie bleef eveneens een ambachtelijke en kleinschalige werkwijze in zwang naast een seriematige en meer grootschalige productie. Binnen Zuid-Holland was zelfs van beide sprake. Hier bestond vanaf 1924 een aparte afdeling: de 'Afdeling Kunstnijverheid'. Totdat deze afdeling in 1933 vanwege de economische malaise weer werd opgeheven, werd hier in relatief kleine oplages, voornamelijk vrij sober en zakelijk vormgegeven sier- en gebruiksaardewerk geproduceerd, naar ontwerp van o.a. Gidding, De Lorm en Chris van der Hoef (zie cat. nr. 00). Hun producten steken verrassend modern af tegen het bonte en drukke 'plateel' waarop de fabriek in de jaren ’20 economisch vooral dreef en dat gezien kan worden als een ceramische variant van de Amsterdamse School-vormgeving (zie cat. nr. 00-00). Mede dankzij de vrolijke decors van Henri Breetveld (18641925; zie cat. nr. 00), de belangrijkste ontwerper van dit type mat geglazuurde aardewerk, had de fabriek zoveel succes, dat veel andere ceramiekfabrieken (ook buiten Gouda) het gingen navolgen. ‘Gouds plateel’ is hierdoor min of meer een soortnaam geworden. Een tweede ceramiekfabriek die zich in het interbellum artistiek profileerde was de firma Goedewaagen, die ook in Gouda gevestigd was. Dit bedrijf nam in 1923 De Distel uit Amsterdam over en verkreeg daardoor onder meer het recht op het gebruik van modellen en decors van Theo Nieuwenhuis en C.A. Lion Cachet. Zij waren voor De Distel gaan ontwerpen, nadat Bert Nienhuis in 1912 naar Duitsland was vertrokken. Lion Cachet ging nu ook nieuwe ontwerpen voor Goedewaagen maken en liet er bovendien een groot aantal kleurige tegeltableaus voor zijn scheepsinterieurs uitvoeren (cat. nr. 00). Verder produceerden er in het interbellum nog verschillende kleinere fabrieken en ateliers aardewerk van een hoog artistiek niveau, waaronder enkele nieuwe bedrijven. Een van de meest interessante daarvan was de fabriek Ram in Arnhem, die in 1921 werd opgericht met als primair doel de op dat moment reeds 80 jaar oude Colenbrander weer op ceramisch gebied werkzaam te krijgen. De sierlijke abstracte decors die hij tegen het eind van zijn leven voor deze fabriek ontwierp zijn, net als zijn vroegere werk, moeilijk bij een bepaalde stroming in te delen en onderstrepen eens te meer zijn unieke positie in de Nederlandse kunstnijverheid (cat. nrs. 00-00). Andere vermeldenswaardige nieuwkomers waren Eskaf, eerst in Steenwijk en later in Huizen gevestigd (in bedrijf tussen 1919 en 1934), en de Kennemer Pottenbakkerij in Velzen (opgericht in 1920). Voor de eerste firma ontwierpen o.a. Hildo Krop en Cornelis van der Sluys; bij de tweede firma was (mede)eigenaar Eelke Snel (18991939) hoofdverantwoordelijk voor de vormgeving. Eskaf is vooral bekend geworden door zijn enigszins vlekkerig ogende, bijna monochrome, halfmatte glazuur, dat de producten een vrij rustig uiterlijk gaf (zie cat. nr. 00). In Velzen werden de producten vaak gedecoreerd met eenvoudige geometrische motieven in heldere kleuren, die doen vermoeden dat Snel en zijn medeontwerper Carl Gellings (1892-1959) veel affiniteit hadden met de ideeën die binnen de Stijl-groep leefden (zie cat. nrs. 00 en 00).
Overige sectoren
In de grafische vormgeving was de Amsterdamse School tot eind jaren ’20 wel de meest dominante stijl. Hoewel de typografische experimenten die Wijdeveld in Wendingen toepaste voor velen te ver gingen, is zijn invloed in afgezwakte vorm op veel plaatsen merkbaar, bijvoorbeeld in de affiches van
R.N. Roland Holst (zie cat. nrs. 00-00), het reclame- en verpakkingsdrukwerk van Henk Schilling (1893-1942; zie cat. nrs. 00-00) en de tijdschriftomslagen van Johan Briedé (1885-1977; zie cat. nrs. 00-00). Op het gebied van het reclamedrukwerk, dat in het interbellum definitief een volwaardig werkterrein voor grafisch ontwerpers werd, ging daarnaast veel invloed uit van het werk van Jac. Jongert (1883-1942), die in 1923 de artistieke leiding kreeg over de reclameafdeling van de Van Nellefabriek. Hij ontwikkelde voor dit bedrijf een strakke, zakelijke huisstijl met heldere kleuren, die alom waardering oogstte en al gauw door velen als een van de meest geslaagde Nederlandse voorbeelden op dit terrein werd gezien (cat. nr. 00). In de tweede helft van de jaren ‘20 kregen meer grafisch ontwerpers langzamerhand aandacht voor functionalistische ontwerpprincipes. Een nieuw element hierbij was het gebruik van de fotomontage, door ontwerpers als Paul Schuitema (1897-1973) en Piet Zwart (1885-1977), dat als markering van een nieuw tijdperk beschouwd kan worden (zie cat. nrs. 0000). Ook in de metaalwarenindustrie en de edelsmeedbranche werd een op de Amsterdamse School geënte vormgeving in de jaren ’20 dominant, maar ook hier was er ruimte voor meer functionalistische ontwerpopvattingen. Het artistieke niveau was in deze bedrijfstakken niet altijd zo hoog als in de glaswerk- en de ceramiekindustrie, maar vermeldenswaard is toch zeker het werk van Carel Begeer (1883-1956) uit deze tijd. Als hoofddirecteur van de in 1919 uit een fusie ontstane Koninklijke Nederlandsche Edelmetaal Bedrijven’ (KNEB) hield hij niet veel tijd voor artistieke zaken over, maar hij zag toch kans om zowel enkele zeer luxe, plastische zilveren siervazen en –schalen (unica) te ontwerpen als een aantal serviezen en kandelaars met een veel soberder vormentaal (zie cat. nrs. 0000), die in kleine series op de markt werden gebracht.
Het einde van een tijdperk
De crisis van 1929 en de economische malaise in de jaren daarna maakten een einde aan de populariteit van drukke en kostbare decoraties in alle sectoren van de toegepaste kunst. Natuurlijk was dit primair een gevolg van het gebrek aan geld dat beschikbaar was voor kunst en cultuur – de eerste helft van de jaren ‘30 was een slappe tijd op alle mogelijke gebieden - maar het was tevens een mentale kwestie. Het ‘feest’ was over en er brak opnieuw een soort bezinningspauze aan. De soberheid, die rond 1900 de ‘constructieve’ richting had gekenmerkt met haar sterke morele component, kreeg opnieuw een kans. Daarom was er in de tweede helft van de jaren ’30 toen de economie weer begon aan te trekken, toch geen terugkeer te zien naar een nieuwe exuberantie. In het primair op massaproductie gerichte functionalistische design dat rond het midden van de jaren ‘30 opkwam en dat veel sterker internationaal geïnspireerd was, was voor decoratie niet veel geen plaats meer. En van handwerk en ambachtelijkheid, waaraan ontwerpers rond 1900 zoveel waarde hadden gehecht, was al helemaal geen sprake meer. Daarmee kwam er een einde aan een tijdperk waarin het design in Nederland een sterk eigen gezicht had gehad. Een gezicht dat mede gekenmerkt werd door een hoge kwaliteit, die zeker niet onderdoet voor de kwaliteit van de Nederlandse kunstnijverheid uit de Gouden 17de eeuw. Er mag in dit verband dan ook zeker gesproken worden van een ‘Tweede Gouden Tijdperk’ in de Nederlandse toegepaste kunst.

Translation - English esign in the Netherlands in the ‘eond olden Age’ Dutch design, 1885-1935
In the course of the second half of the 19th century, there was growing dissatisfaction in the Netherlands, as in other European countries, with the use of style elements from the past that had been taken for granted until then. When in the 1870ies, after several decades of stagnation, the Dutch economy started growing again, a new cultural self-awareness came up as well. Many began to realize that looking back nostalgically to the past – in particular to the ‘Golden’ 17th century – was not a practical recipe for tackling society’s increasing industrialization and ever faster growing modernization. A ‘new’ age required a ‘new’ art-form with its own formal idiom that could not ‘automatically’ be based on historical examples. It soon became apparent that this required a modernization of training methods in the field of arts and crafts. Hence, in 1874 at the Polytechnic School at Delft (the predecessor of today’s Technological University there), the architectural training programme was extended by adding a course for the design of decorations and ornaments, under the supervision of senior lecturer Adolf le Comte (1850-1921). Le Comte had been a graduate from Delft but had later made a study tour through Germany and worked in Paris for a while. A few years later, in 1879, the first real School for Arts and Crafts was founded in Haarlem. A major incentive for modernizing the education of arts and crafts came from the architect P.J.H. Cuypers (1827-1921), who may himself still have belonged to the neo-gothic school but, even so, aimed for maximum purity of style. When building one of his greatest projects, the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam (constructed in 1877-85), he was very much hampered by a lack of skilled masons and decoration painters in this city and therefore started a more practically oriented educational institute, modelled on the organisational structure of medieval construction workshops. This led to the establishment of the Quellinus School in 1881. He also became a teacher at a second new, slightly higher and more design-oriented educational institute: the State School for Arts and Crafts, which also started in Amsterdam in 1881. In the following years, other towns, too, saw the establishment of more practically oriented schools.
Farewell to historicism
The above-mentioned town of Delft was not only important to the renewal of the arts and crafts industry for being the seat of the Polytechnic School, but also for another reason. It was the location of the last remaining ceramics factory of the famous 17th- and 18th-century Delft pottery industry: De Porceleyne Fles. This factory was rejuvenated in 1876 by the businessman Joost Thooft, who engaged LeComte as chief designer. Though the latter’s first designs had mainly been inspired by historical examples, he would indirectly initiate a real stylistic innovation in the Dutch arts and crafts industry. In fact, one of his co-workers at De Porceleyne Fles was Wilhelm von Gudenberg (1855-1930 from Germany, who in 1883 used the know-how he had acquired in Delft to found his own ceramics factory in The Hague: Rozenburg. For the position of designer, he employed the architect Th. A.C. Colenbrander (1841-1930), who was already at an advanced age and who, during the years he had stayed in Paris, had become very much impressed by the art from the Near- and Far East exhibited there. Between 1884 and 1889, he used this as the basis for designing a large number of models and decors for the factory, which were hardly reminiscent of any historical examples (see Cat. No. 00). Although the commercial success of Colenbrander’s designs was not very great, they caught the attention of evrybody interested in innovation and demonstrated that, with regard to designing, it was definitely possible to liberate oneself from the past. This also inspired Le Comte to design new, more contemporary decorations for this ceramics factory in the nineties, in close cooperation with the technical staff of De Porceleyne Fles (see Cat. Nos. 00-00).
The Hague was also the place where graphic designer Theo van Hoytema (1863-1917) worked, whose cheerful picture books based on Anderson’s fairytales (the first of these books was published in 1891) are among the earliest manifestations of the renewal movement in book-arts (see Cat. No. 00). These books, for which he personally lithographed both the pictures and the text, show a strong influence by Japanese art. From 1901, he was also very successful with his lithographed wall-calendars with flora- and fauna scenes. (Cat. Nos. 00-00), which also inspired other graphic designers to follow suit. Meanwhile, the centre of the revival movement had shifted from Delft and The Hague to Amsterdam, where several of Cuypers’ students had started on their own in the course of the nineties. Among them were the three friends Gerrit Dijsselhof (1866-1924), Theo Nieuwenhuis (1866-1951) and Carel Lion Cachet (1864-1945) who gained some fame by producing three diplomas (one by each) which showed that both their technique (they used woodcuts, which had completely fallen into disuse at the time) and their design broke with all current views regarding typography. A short time later, in the production of wall-coverings and upholstery, they started experimenting with batiks (i.e. an old technique for decorating textiles originating from the Netherlands Indies). Their work would soon attract the attention of others and, in 1898, the three of them were invited by the firm of E.J. van Wisselingh & Co, who until then had only been active as art-dealers, to become chief designers of a newly to be founded interior design workshop. By then, two former employees of Cuypers’, i.e. K.P.C. de Bazel (1869-1923; see Cat. No. 00) and J.L.M. Lauweriks (1864-1932; see Cat. No. 00), had already taken their first steps in the field of interior design and started their own practice, employing the precious-metal worker Frans Zwollo (1872-1945; see picture 00).
he ‘rational’ or ‘onstrutive’ school
Both the Van Wisselingh firm and the practice run by De Bazel and Lauweriks concentrated on a well-to-do elite and preferred using upmarket and hence expensive materials for their products. By contrast, other Amsterdam designers would indeed aim for less expensive products that would be affordable to a wider public. In doing so, they developed a restrained, austere formal idiom, retaining only a sparing use of decorations, which, indeed, would be applied in such a way as to accentuate the structure of the object. Leader of this so-called ‘rational’ or ‘constructive’ school would become H.P. Berlage (1856-1934), who had not received his education in Amsterdam but at the Polytechnic School at Zurich, whose training programmes were heavily influenced by the ideas of Gotfried Semper. Berlage convincingly demonstrated the constructive principles in both the exterior and interior of his famous Exchange Building at the Damrak in Amsterdam (constructed in 1897-1903), which is regarded by many as the first major truly modern building in the Netherlands. Apart from being an architect, Berlage was also active as a designer of furniture, carpets, various appliances, book-covers, and printed materials (see Cat. Nos. 00-00). Together with i.a. Willem Hoeker (1862 - after 1906) and Jac. van den Bosch (1868-1948) he founded the cooperative interior design firm ‘t Binnenhuis in 1900, which was joined by various other followers of the constructive school, such as Jan Eisenloeffel (18761957); Chris Lebeau (1878-1945), Klaas van Leeuwen (1868-1935), Willem Penaat (18751957), and Georg Rueter (1875-1966). Even De Bazel and Lauweriks joined ‘t Binnenhuis, though their work does not quite fit in with the constructive school. The same applied to the ceramics by Willem Brouwer (1877-1933, see Cat. Nos. 00-00), for whose work ‘t Binnenhuis also served as a sales outlet for some time. His very idiosyncratic way of designing, in which the sgrafitto technique was an important element, does not directly fit in with any school. Unfortunately, within a year, there was some disagreement between, on the one hand, Berlage and Van den Bosch, who were the Managing Directors, and the other partners, most of whom
terminated their cooperation, on the other. Some of those who left, among whom Eisenloeffel, Lebeau and Penaat, founded their own firm, De Woning, in 1903. Berlage and Van den Bosch continued the firm on their own, until the former was employed by the trading- and transport firm owned by the married couple Kröller-Müller and moved to The Hague. Van den Bosch subsequently remained as the only Managing Director and succeeded in keeping ‘t Binnenhuis in operation until 1929. Closely allied to ‘t Binnenhuis was another firm: Amstelhoek. This firm had been founded by the above-mentioned Willem Hoeker in 1898 as a subsidiary of the precious-metalwork operation of Hoeker & Zoon, of which he was a co- director. Hoeker did not do any designing himself, but he was still a dedicated follower of the constructive school. Amstelhoek consisted of three workshops: one for ceramics, with Lambertus Zijl (1866-1947) and Chris van der Hoef (18751933) as chief designers, one for metalwork, with chief designer Eisenloeffel, and one for furniture, with chief designer Penaat. The firm was originally located at Amsterdam but, due to a lack of space, the metal- and furniture workshops were established in Haarlem in 1900. Since Hoeker was a poor financial manager, Amstelhoek went bankrupt in 1903, but during the few years of its existence, the firm had served as the ‘standard-bearer’ of the constructive school. As early as 1902, even before its bankruptcy, the furniture workshop in Haarlem was sold to the firm Onder den Sint Maarten (founded in Zaltbommel in 1899 by J.A. Pool, who had been a student of Adolf le Comte at Delft). The chief designer of this firm, which was now permanently established in Haarlem, was Karel Sluyterman (1863-1931; also one of Le Comte’s students and his later successor at Delft), whose designs had great affinity with those by Berlage, Penaat, and Eisenloeffel. The same applied to the metal designer J.C. Stoffels (1874-1951), who had worked in close collaboration with Eisenloeffel prior to his employment at Onder den Sint Maarten in 1903. As for Amstelhoek, only its ceramics workshop in Amsterdam remained in operation; it was continued by its new owners under the name of Voorheen Amstelhoek until 1910. The factory was then taken over by another Amsterdam ceramics factory that adhered to the ‘constructive’ principles: De Distel, where ceramist Bert Nienhuis (1873-1960) had been the artistic leader from 1901 onwards (see Cat. No. 00). It should be noted here that concepts such as simplicity and austerity have to be considered in its proper perspective. Within the constructive school, too, there was often very elaborate ornamentation filling entire surfaces in the design of textiles, posters, book covers, and functional graphics. Still, the decorations would be based on strictly geometric principles, from which all components were derived, as can be seen in the book covers and typography by Georg Rueter, Jan Bertus Heukelom (1875-1966) and Sjoerd de Roos (1877-1962; see Cat. Nos. 00-00). Among the most extreme examples of this are the room-screens with batiked silk covers by Chris Lebeau (Cat. No. 00), which show a veritable ‘horror vacui’. At seeing these pieces, anybody who has studied the intricate batik technique, which requires a great deal of manual skill, cannot help wondering how somebody could possibly have made them all by himself. But, after all, Lebeau was recognized as the foremost expert at batiking, which due to its origins was practised by many Dutch artists. As a teacher at the School for Arts and Crafts at Haarlem (1904-1906 and 1908-1914), he made many younger artists (i.a. Jan Kreunen, 1892-1918, and Mathé van der Weiden, 1890-1964; see Cat. Nos. 00-00 and 00-00) familiar with the principles of designing on geometric principles, as well as with the technique of batiking.
Art Nouveau
The ‘constructive’ school, with its austere, geometric formal idiom was, and still is, regarded by many as the most specifically Dutch contribution to Art Nouveau. However, there were also various designers and firms that took their inspiration from the fluent, waving lines of the
international - more specifically, French and Belgian - Art Nouveau. No doubt, the best-known example is Rozenburg, where, under the leadership of J. Jurriaan Kok (1861-1919), who had been the Managing Director of the factory since 1895, the so-called ‘eggshell porcelain’ was developed in 1898/99. For this fragile porcelain, Kok personally designed the models in an elegant, plastic style, while the sophisticated decors of plants and animals were conceived and performed by some very talented painters, among whom Sam Schellink (1876-1958) is among the best-known (see Cat. No. 00). Also, the posters and book-covers by Jan Toorop (1858-1928), who became famous mainly as a ‘free’ painter and draughtsman of intricate symbolic pictures, have a lot of affinity with the international Art Nouveau (see Cat. Nos. 00-00). To a somewhat lesser extent, this also applies to the work by Simon Moulijn (1866-1948; see Cat. Nos. 00-00). Nevertheless, their work was also appreciated in ‘constructive’ circles; Berlage actually invited Toorop to design tile-panels for his Exchange Building. For that matter, in the field of graphic design – particularly with regard to book designs – there was much more stylistic variation than in other sectors, due to the fact that, for most publishers, commercial interests prevailed over artistic ideologies.
It is true, though, that for commercial reasons, in other industrial sectors, too, attempts were made to combine ‘constructive’ principles with a more profuse, rich ornamentation. In particular, the larger firms tended to sell products in several styles, usually on the basis of designs by different (freelance) designers. This was true for ceramics factories such as De Weduwe Brantjes and Haga in Purmerend (Cat. Nos. 00 and 00); Zuid-Holland in Gouda (Cat. No. 00), Amphora in Oegstgeest (Cat. No. 00), and several others. Hence, a successful designer like Chris van der Hoef would be able to work for several factories at the same time. In graphic industries, too, several styles were used side by side. A case in point was the Gijsbrecht van Aemstel portfolio by Antoon Derkinderen (1858-1925, Cat. No. 00), with its austere, stylized design, that was published by the same publishers as the Halewijn portfolio by Hendrikus Jansen (1866-1921; Cat. No. 00), which, by contrast, features an elegant design inspired by French Art Nouveau. In other sectors, particularly in the precious-metalwork sector and in the upmarket metalwork industry (for example, at the firm of Daalderop at Tiel; see Cat. No. 00), some firms would go on simultaneously producing in both modern and historicizing styles for a long time to come. Examples of International Art Nouveau proper would also be for sale in the Netherlands, i.a. at the firm Arts & Crafts at Kneuterdijk in The Hague. This firm was established in 1898 by a businessman called Johan Uiterwijk. The business was associated with Siegfried Bing’s famous art-dealer’s firm L’Art Nouveau at Paris, by whose agency Art & Crafts would sell i.a. glassware made by the American Louis Comfort Tiffany, furniture by the Belgian Henri van de Velde, and carpets by the Englishman Frank Brangwyn. The leading Dutch designer of Arts & Crafts, during its first years, was Johan Thorn Prikker (1868-1932). He had been educated at the Academy of The Hague, from which he was prematurely expelled in 1889. In 1892, he got acquainted with Van de Velde, who introduced him to the Belgian avant-garde society Les Vingts. Influenced by Van de Velde, Thorn Prikker turned away from ‘free’ art and dedicated himself to several fields of applied art. He started experimenting with, among other things, batiks (i.e. an old technique for decorating textiles originating from the Netherlands Indies), graphic design (see Cat. No. 00), and furniture design. Before long, therefore, he was invited by Uiterwijk, whom he had befriended, to become an employee at Arts & Crafts (see Cat. No. 00). He would already leave this firm again in 1900 and his position as a designer was taken over by Lebeau, who stayed with the firm for only a few months though. After that, the architect Chris Wegerif (1859-1920) and his wife Agatha Wegerif-Gravestein (1867-1944) would take charge. Their designs were not very popular in the Netherlands but were indeed well received by critics abroad, i.a. at the high-profile ‘International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Arts’ at Turin in
1902. Nevertheless, due to Uiterwijk’s lack of business acumen, the firm went bankrupt the next year.
The Amsterdam School
Around 1910, various artists gradually started to reflect on the style principles that had become commonplace around 1900. In doing so, questions were raised mainly about the simplicity and austerity of the constructive school, which had often been propagated on the basis of moral and political (in particular, socialist) principles. Expensive, exotic materials and more elaborate decorations became less of a taboo, and some designers actually occasionally started to add a historicizing element or motif to their designs. Eisenloeffel, for instance, after a brief stay in Germany in 1908, made a drastic stylistic turnaround, distancing himself from the simplicity and austerity of his previous work. Around this time, Managing Director J.A. Pool, too, changed his course at Onder den Sint Maarten and began selling furniture in the ‘traditionally Dutch’ style again. These developments are further characterized by i.a. the upholstery- and wall-covering fabrics with the elegant, slightly historicizing patterns designed by Theo Nieuwenhuis between approx. 1910 and 1915 (Cat. Nos. 00-00). The textiles and the printing on advertising- and packaging materials produced by the slightly younger Jan Kreunen in the years 1914-1917 also fit in well with this transitional period. Kreunen had been one of Lebeau’s students in Haarlem and had subsequently worked in Darmstadt for some time as an assistant to J.E. Margold, who had ties with the Wiener Werkstätte. The outbreak of the First World War made him return to the Netherlands in 1914, however. Similarly, J.L.M. Lauweriks, Frans Zwollo, and Bert Nienhuis, who had been invited to Hagen by the German maecenas Karl Ernst Osthaus (in respectively 1909, 1910, and 1912) in order to teach at the School for Arts and Crafts he had founded there, also returned to the Netherlands as a result of the War. For other artists, too, the First World War was a major influence on their careers. Though the Netherlands remained neutral in 1914 and was therefore spared from violence and misery, the war by no means passed by unnoticed. The loss of a large part of the exports of luxury goods meant a considerable economic setback which particularly affected the ceramics industry. Rozenburg, for instance, had to close in 1914. Moreover, many international contacts were cut off and foreign travel became virtually impossible. In addition, the horrors of the war shocked many in their belief in progress and renewal. It became painfully clear that the social changes hoped for in particular among progressive people would not be forthcoming. This also took away the ideological basis underlying the endeavours to achieve artistic progress which had been a matter of course until1914.
A clear stylistic turnaround first became apparent in architecture. The aim for an increasing degree of decorative simplicity, which had been initiated by Berlage’s Exchange Building around 1900, sparked a reaction around 1914 from a group of younger architects that would become known in art history as the ‘Amsterdam School’. These architects, of whom Michel de Klerk (1884-1923) and Piet Kramer (1881-1669, see Cat. No. 00) are best known, developed a plastic, expressive building style that allowed more room for sculpture again. One of the first and most famous buildings representative of the Amsterdam School is the Scheepvaarthuis at Prins Hendrikkade in Amsterdam. This big building, built in 1912-1917 to accommodate the offices of some shipping companies, was designed by J.M. van der Mey (1878-1949) with the assistance of De Klerk and Kramer (the three of them had started their careers at the same architects firm). On the outside, it was richly ornamented by sculptures, for which a special sculptor’s workshop had been fitted out at the construction site. Head of this workshop became H.A. van den Eijnde (1869-1939) was appointed who, via this project, stand out as one of the leading Dutch creators of architectural sculptures in the interbellum period. In addition, though, he also designed
furniture and silverware (see Cat. No. 00). His chief assistant was Hildo Krop (1884-1970) who also branched out into several fields of applied art (see Cat. No. 00). The art of interior design, too, got new impulses from the Amsterdam School, and again this led to a renewed appreciation of decorations, which was now allowed to be unrestrainedly luxuriant and abundant again. After the Scheepvaarthuis, the Tuschinski cinema, which was designed by architect H. de Jong in 1921, became the epitome of a representative building in the AmsterdamSchool style. In this building, the features of this style are shown in the clearest and most comprehensive way. The exuberantly decorated interior after a design by Chris Bartels (18891967), Pieter den Besten (1894-1973), and Jaap Gidding (1887-1955), which has recently been completely refurbished, beautifully demonstrates that the wind had started blowing from a totally different direction. Art was allowed to be a feast to the eye again, and artists were not so much expected to improve society any longer. Gidding in particular made a distinct name for himself by his work in this cinema; here he demonstrated for the first time and on a large scale the style that made him famous, featuring an elaborate and multicoloured mixture of abstract patterns and of stylized plant-, flower-, and animal motifs. His carpets, in particular, got so much acclaim that he became a very popular carpet designer, whose designs would mostly be produced by Koninklijke Vereenigde Tapijtfabrieken, which had been the leading producer in this field in the Netherlands since 1919 (see Cat. No. 00). However, the architects of the Amsterdam School did not distance themselves from their predecessors in everything. For one thing, they, too, were deeply wedded to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk and liked cooperating with artists from various disciplines. Their wide interest is well illustrated in the monthly periodical Wendingen, which was first published in 1918 and would long function as the mouthpiece of the Amsterdam group (it remained in existence until 1931). Apart from its wide-ranging contents, it also stood out by its special typography (see Cat. No. 00), which was created by the architect H. Th. Wijdeveld (1885-1987), who was editor-inchief until 1925. He had its covers lithographed by a variety of renowned artists (see Cat. No. 00), i.a. K.P.C. de Bazel, H.A. van den Eijnde, Chris Lebeau, C.A. Lion Cachet, Richard Roland Holst (1868-1938) and Jan Sluijters (1881-1957). Nearly all of them belonged to the generation that had already started their careers around 1900 (usually as followers of the constructive school), but did not find it very hard to change their style a bit so as to suit the new artistic taste.
For that matter, many Amsterdam-School buildings testify to a certain degree of eclecticism, especially in interior design. For instance, the Scheepvaarthuis contained i.a. wainscoting, wall coverings, and lamps after a design of Theo Nieuwenhuis, and leaded windows after a design by C.A. Lion Cachet. The fact that their work could be incorporated into such an ambitious Amsterdam School concept without much difficulty goes to show that there was no real break with the preceding period. Incidentally, Lion Cachet was more or less the ‘in-house designer’ of a number of the shipping companies that were accommodated in the building. As early as the beginning of the century, he had worked as a designer of (parts of) passenger cabins of ocean steamers, and his variegated, plastic designs of these interiors already clearly anticipated on the Amsterdam School. In addition to the interior of the Tuschinski cinema, his ship interiors of the twenties are the main examples of interior-design art in the Dutch Art Deco period. Sadly, nothing of it remains, apart from a few individual pieces of furniture, a couple of wainscoting segments, some pieces of decorative sculpture, and a few tile panels (see cat. No. 00). In fact, the designs of the Amsterdam School were not really innovative, although it may have appeared so at first sight. It elaborated on elements from both the constructive school and Art Nouveau, which were merely stylized and abstracted further and, after having mixed it with some orientalism and historicism, flavoured with some expressionism. Hence, older designers such as Lion Cachet, Lebeau, Nieuwenhuis, Jac. van den Bosch and Jan Eisenloeffel had no great trouble joining up. Still, the Amsterdam School clearly acquired its own identity, and this
movement can therefore be regarded as an independent Dutch variation of the international Art Deco. This individual identity is demonstrated not only in the buildings designed by the AmsterdamSchool architects, but also in the furniture, household appliances, and the applied graphics they designed whenever they were given the opportunity (see Cat. Nos. 00 and 00). One of the most exuberant designers among them was Wijdeveld, who has been referred to above and who has achieved nothing much remarkable as an architect, but who was one of the most high-profile figures within this movement. Among his best known projects is the interior design of the Dutch pavilion at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes at Paris in 1925 (see Cat. No. 00). Though several older artists successfully took part in this exhibition as well, including Van den Bosch, Eisenloeffel, and Lion Cachet, this exhibition showed that – mainly thanks to Wijdeveld’s sculpture-like designs – the Amsterdam School was the dominant movement in Dutch applied arts at the time.
De Stijl
It is therefore hard to imagine that, at the time, Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) had already designed his famous chair of slats and planks in primary colours, the more so since it looks as if it originates from a completely different age (Cat. No, 00). In the field of design, Rietveld was the leading representative of the counterpart of the Amsterdam School: the De Stijl group. This group, which was called after its mouthpiece, the magazine called De Stijl (published between 1918 and 1931), was not an official society, but rather a loosely organized group of more or less like-minded artists. They were united in their endeavours to achieve maximum simplicity and purity in the visual arts. Today, the group is internationally renowned and is generally regarded as one of the most important exponents of 20th-century Dutch art, though in its day it was merely a rather marginal phenomenon that was not taken very seriously by many. Moreover, the ideals of the leaders of the group, Piet Mondriaan (1872-1944) and Theo van Doesburg (18831931, editor-in-chief of De Stijl), were so aspiring that little priority was given to things directly meant for everyday use, such as design. Apart from the furniture designed by Rietveld and J.J.P. Oud (1890-1963) and the carpets and graphic designs by Bart van der Leck (1876-1958) and Vilmos Huszár (1884-1960), there is therefore not much real ‘Stijl-design’ to be found. Actually, the closest resemblance to it can be found in the work by Willem Gispen (1890-1981), who became known mainly for his use of modern materials such as steel and glass, which he processed in his own firm (Cat. Nos. 00-00). His almost unornamented, functionalistic furniture and lamps would soon become popular though, but that was because he primarily focused on the interior design of industrial premises and office spaces. After all, in work spaces, a profuse, elaborate design was considered unnecessary and indeed less desirable. Apart from influencing Gispen, the ideas of the De Stijl group (which, incidentally, originated in no small part from the ideas of Berlage and of other ‘constructives’) also influenced several other designers, though in a more diluted form. For example, there was a group of interior designers working in The Hague (i.a. Cornelis van der Sluys, 1881-1944, and Henk Wouda, 1885-1945; see Cat. No. 00-00) who, though much less rigorously than Rietveld, and thereby more successfully, rejected the exuberance of the Amsterdam School. Their great example was the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, but they also had great respect for Berlage, who had established himself in The Hague in 1913. A fairly wide popularity also befell the moderate functionalism of the furniture factory L.O.V. (Labor Omnia Vincit), which had been founded by the idealistic entrepreneur Gerrit Pelt in Oosterbeek near Arnhem in 1910 and continued until 1935. For this factory, which was among the first to award its employees a share in its profits, Johannes Muntendam (1882-1938) was the chief designer in the twenties (Cat. No. 00).
Glassware and ceramics after 1915
With regard to the design of glassware for household use, the influence of the Amsterdam School was not very dominant either. No doubt, this is to a large extent due to the nature of this material, which encourages clarity and simplicity rather than elaborate and variegated designs. However, it was also due to the tastes of P.M. Cochius, who was the forward-looking and idealistic director of Glasfabriek Leerdam, which firm was to become the leading producer of glassware in the Netherlands during that period (until then, there had been no glassware production of any artistic importance here). From 1915 onwards, Cochius commissioned the design of consumer- and decorative glassware to several renowned designers and architects, i.a. K.P.C. de Bazel, H.P. Berlage, Chris Lanooy (1881-1948), Chris Lebeau, Cornelis de Lorm (1875-1942) and Jaap Gidding. However, one of the most successful designers for Leerdam would become Andries Copier (1901-1994), whose talent had been recognized by Cochius even at a very early age. After receiving his apprenticeship at the factory, Copier designed his first drinking-service in 1922/23, which was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels at Paris in 1925. This drinking-service would be followed by many more, and in the course of time Copier’s designs would become increasingly austere. Other glass designers were also inspired by him to produce more formal and functional designs. It should be noted, though, that apart from the serial production of glassware at Leerdam, unique items would be produced there as well, both by Copier and by other designers, notably Lanooy and Lebeau. These unique items were purely artisan objects created in close collaboration between artists and glassblowers. Typically, the end-result would not be based on a clearly preconceived plan but would have ‘grown’ almost spontaneously during the work process. Not only did this lead to beautiful and often surprising artistic results, but also to all sorts of new discoveries regarding the use of materials and techniques. Lebeau, who terminated his cooperation with Leerdam after a dispute in 1925, would experiment further with many of these discoveries in the factory of Ludwig Moser und Söhne at Adolf (near Winterberg) in Bohemia (see Cat. Nos. 00-00).
In the pottery industry, too, traditional and small-scale working methods remained popular side by side with serial production on a larger scale. Indeed, within Zuid-Holland, both were practised. Since 1924, it had had a separate unit, i.e. the ‘Arts and Crafts Unit’. Until it was closed in 1933 due to an economic depression, relatively small series of predominantly rather austerely and formally designed decorative- and consumer pottery were produced here, after designs by i.a. Gidding, De Lorm, and Chris van der Hoef (see Cat. No. 00). Their products stand out as surprisingly modern compared to the variegated and elaborate ‘delftware’, which was the mainstay product that kept the factory going during the twenties, and which may be regarded as the ceramic variant of Amsterdam School design (see Cat. No. 00-00). Thanks to, among other things, the cheerful decors by Henri Breetveld (1864-1925; see Cat. No. 00), who was the principal designer of this type of matt-glazed pottery, the factory was so successful that many ceramics factories (outside Gouda as well) followed its example. ‘Gouda’ has thus more or less become a generic name. A second ceramics factory that presented itself artistically in the interbellum period was the firm of Goedewaagen, which was also established in Gouda. This firm took over De Distel in Amsterdam in 1923 and thus obtained the right to use the models and pictures designed by Theo Nieuwenhuis and C.A. Lion Cachet. They had started designing for De Distel after Bert Nienhuis had left for Germany in 1912. Lion Cachet now started making new designs for Goedewaagen as well and also commissioned some colourful tile panels for his ship interiors there. In addition, there were several other smaller factories and workshops that produced artistically high-quality pottery in the interbellum period, among which there were some new firms. One of
the most interesting of these was the Ram factory in Arnhem, which was founded in 1921 with the primary goal of creating work in the field of ceramics for Colenbrander, who had by then reached the age of 80. Like his earlier work, the elegant abstract decors he designed for this factory toward the end of his life are difficult to classify under a specific movement and further underline his unique position in the Dutch arts and crafts world (Cat. Nos. 00-00). Other notable newcomers were Eskaf, which was first established in Steenwijk and later in Huizen (operational between 1919 and 1934), and Kennemer Pottenbakkerij at Velzen (founded in 1920). For the first-mentioned firm, the designs were done by i.a. Hildo Krop and Cornelis van der Sluys; at the second firm, the (co-)owner Eelke Snel (1899-1939) was in charge of designs. Eskaf has become known mainly for its somewhat smudgy-looking, almost monochrome, semi-matt glazing that gave the products its rather serene appearance (see Cat. No. 00). In Velzen, the products were often decorated with simple geometric motifs in bright colours, which suggests that Snel and his co-designer Carl Gellings (1892-1959) had great affinity with the ideas that existed within the Stijl group (see Cat. Nos. 00 and 00).
Other sectors
In graphic design, the Amsterdam School was definitely the most dominant style till the end of the twenties. Though, to many people, the typographic experiments done by Wijdeveld in Wendingen went too far, his influence in a diluted form can be noticed in many places, e.g. on the posters by R.N. Roland Holst (see Cat. Nos. 00-00), the printing on advertising- and packaging-materials by Henk Schilling (1893-1942; see Cat. Nos. 00-00) and the magazine covers by Johan Briedé (1885-1977; see Cat. Nos. 00-00). With regard to the printing of advertising materials, which had finally become a fully developed field of activity for graphic designers in the interbellum period, the work by Jac. Jongert (1883-1942), who became the artistic leader of the advertising department at the Van Nelle factory in 1932, was also very influential. For this company, he developed an austere, formal, brightly coloured house-style that received wide acclaim and would soon be regarded by many as one of the most successful Dutch examples in this field (Cat. No. 00). In the second half of the twenties, more graphic designers gradually moved their attention to functional design principles. A new element in this was the use of photomontage, by designers such as Paul Schuitema (1897-1973) and Piet Zwart (18851977), which may be regarded as a signpost for a new age (see Cat. Nos. 00-00). Also in the metalwork industry and the precious-metalwork sector, a design style inspired by the Amsterdam School became dominant in the twenties, but here, too, there was room for more functionalistic ideas about design. In these industries, the artistic level would not always be as high as in the glassware- and ceramics industries, but still the work by Carel Begeer (1888-1956) in this period is certainly worth noting. As the Managing Director of (the precious-metalwork company) Koninklijke Nederlandsche Edelmetaal Bedrijven (KNEB), which had been created by a merger in 1919, he did not have much time left for artistic matters but still managed to design both some very upmarket, expressive, silver decorative vases and -bowls (unique items) and a number of services and candlesticks with a much more restrained formal idiom (see Cat. Nos. 00-00), which were put on the market in small series.
The end of an era
The crisis of 1929 and the economic depression in the following years put an end to the popularity of abundant and expensive decorations in all sectors of the applied arts. Obviously, this was primarily due to the shortage of money available for art and culture – the first half of the
thirties was a slack period in every conceivable field – but it was also a mental matter. The ‘party’ was over and it was the start of a period of reflection again. Once more, here was room for the simplicity that had characterized the ‘constructive’ school around 1900, with its strong moral component. Hence, in the second half of the thirties, when the economy was recovering again, there was no return to a new period of exuberance. In the mass-production-oriented functionalistic design that came up around the middle of the thirties and that was much more internationally inspired, there was not much room for decoration any more. And there was even less room for the kind of craftsmanship and artisan work that the designers had valued so much around 1900. This was the end of an era in which Dutch design had acquired such a strong and unique identity. It was an identity that had been characterized by the kind of high quality that certainly measures up to the quality of the Dutch arts and crafts in the Golden 17th century. It is therefore appropriate to speak of a ‘Second Golden Age’ in Dutch applied arts in this respect.

Pioniers van de Schotse schilderkunst

1. Synopsis
In deze tentoonstelling introduceert het Drents Museum de Glasgow Boys in Nederland. Door medewerking van de musea van Edinburgh, Glasgow en Aberdeen en andere museale en particuliere bruikleengevers kunnen wij 70 tot 100 schilderijen en 50 werken op papier tonen. Omdat deze tentoonstelling voor het Nederlandse publiek de eerste echte kennismaking met de Glasgow Boys is, plannen we een brede overzichtstentoonstelling die focust op de 10 belangrijkste kunstenaars en hun ontwikkeling, thema’s, belangstelling, techniek, reizen, vriendschappen, atelierpraktijk, met werk in verschillende media (schilderijen, aquarellen, gouaches en tekeningen). We richten ons op de bloeiperiode van de groep tussen 1880 en 1900. Het latere (veelal commerciële) werk laten we grotendeels ongemoeid. De tentoonstelling is chronologisch opgebouwd uit een introductie en drie ontwikkelingsfasen. Die fases zijn elk opgebouwd uit thema’s. We streven er naar ongeveer 20% relatief onbekend werk te tonen, zodat de tentoonstelling en catalogus (naast de inhoud) ook wat betreft de selectie van werken nieuwswaarde heeft ten opzichte van het retrospectief in Glasgow (Glasgow Museums) en Londen (Royal Academy of Arts) in 2010. Om de belangrijkste inspiratiebronnen van de Glasgow Boys toe te lichten zullen we enkele werken van de Haagse School en van Jules Bastien-Lepage tonen. Voor de introductie van de Glasgow Boys in Nederland is met name interessant dat de Boys vooral wat betreft hun onderwerpskeuze en composities beïnvloed lijken te zijn door de Haagse School.

Als kader voor deze eerste tentoonstelling van de Glasgow Boys in Nederland zal er aandacht zijn voor de eeuwenlange relaties Nederland-Schotland, op commercieel, religieus, academisch en artistiek gebied. Gezien de vele affiniteiten tussen Schotland en Nederland is het niet verwonderlijk dat Schotse schilders door de eeuwen heen veel naar Nederlandse kunst hebben gekeken en dat Schotse industriëlen aan het eind van de 19de eeuw veel Nederlands werk gingen verzamelen, o.a. van de Haagse School. Het calvinisme in beide landen verklaart wellicht een gedeelde voorkeur voor onpretentieuze onderwerpen, vaak in een setting van grijze luchten die in beide landen gewoon zijn.
Behalve tussen Nederland en Schotland zijn er ook overeenkomsten tussen Schotland en Drenthe aan te wijzen, o.a. als relatief dunbevolkt gebied met ongerepte natuur, aantrekkelijk voor kunstenaars, een plek van schilderskolonies. Interessant in verband hiermee is dat de Aberdonian James Forbes White, die een groot verzamelaar van de Haagse School zou worden, in 1862 als een van zijn eerste schilderijen het werk Heide, Drenthe (huidige locatie onbekend) van Alexander Gerrit Mollinger verwierf, waarin een boerin met een kruiwagen over een verlaten stuk veen loopt.
Onze tentoonstelling is de eerste grote Glasgow Boys presentatie sinds 1900 buiten Groot Brittannië. In 1992 is weliswaar werk van de Glasgow Boys in Amsterdam getoond (Van Gogh Museum) in het kader van een tentoonstelling over de kunsten in Glasgow rond 1900, maar daarbij ging in tegenstelling tot onze tentoonstelling veel aandacht uit naar de toegepaste kunst: Mackintosh en de Glasgow School. Sindsdien is in Schotland veel onderzoek verricht naar het werk van deze schilders. Diverse monografische en overzichtsstudies leidden tot de eerder genoemde overzichtstentoonstelling in Glasgow en Londen in 2010. De nieuwe inzichten die de diverse onderzoeken hebben gebracht, maken het mogelijk deze schilders veel kleurrijker en sterker neer te zetten dan in 1992 in Amsterdam. Bovendien zullen wij het werk van de Glasgow Boys vanuit een andere context brengen dan in 1992, waarover hieronder meer.
2. Verhaallijn
Een korte introductie. Wie waren de Glagow Boys? In de jaren 1880 kwam het werk van een groep jonge Schotse schilders tot bloei. Zij waren actief vanaf eind jaren 1870 en vanaf midden jaren 1880 verwierven ze succes in binnen- en buitenland. Deze groep noemde zichzelf The Boys en werd later bekend als de Glasgow School of Painters (hoewel ze niet allemaal
verbonden waren met Glasgow). Het gaat niet om een vaste groep met een programma, maar om een stel zeer diverse schilders van ongeveer dezelfde generatie, die bevriend waren en er samen op uittrokken om te schilderen in Schotland en Frankrijk. Voor een deel ondergingen ze dezelfde invloeden en hadden ze dezelfde doelen. De gemene delers waren het zich afzetten tegen de gevestigde orde die tot de late 19e eeuw het beeld bepaalde van de officiële tentoonstellingen in Edinburgh en Glasgow en inspiratie door de schilders van Barbizon en van de Haagse School. In het bijzonder ondergingen sommige van de Boys de invloed van Corot, Bastien-Lepage en McNeill Whistler. Sommigen van de Boys kunnen in hun moderne onderwerpskeuze en composities vergeleken worden met de Franse Impressionisten. Hoewel de Boys niet met de Nabis in aanraking zijn geweest, is bij sommige een vergelijkbaar symbolisme en focus op het decoratieve te zien. Kenmerkend voor de Boys is dat zij zich niet tevreden stelden met invloed uit de tweede hand, maar dat zij zelf opleidingen volgden in Parijse ateliers, gingen werken in de schilderskolonie Grez-sur-Loing en zelfs naar Japan reisden (in plaats van genoegen te nemen met Japanse prenten die in Europa populair waren in deze periode). Zij maakten zich allerlei invloeden eigen en verwerkten die tot heel eigen, fris en authentiek werk. De kern bestaat uit: James

De opzet van de tentoonstelling is losjes chronologisch en daarbinnen thematisch. Ter introductie van het verhaal van de Glasgow Boys tussen 1880 en 1900 stippen we kort de lang bestaande relatie Schotland-Nederland aan. Het verzamelen van de Haagse School in Schotland en de artistieke relaties van een generatie vóór de Glasgow Boys wordt o.a. geïllustreerd met een portret dat drie Schotse schilders in 1870 schilderden van Jozef Israëls, die de verzamelaar James Forbes White bezocht. Aan het eind van de schildersessie had Israëls gezegd: ‘Nu zal ik laten zien wat Rembrandt zou doen’, waarop hij een paar virtuoze streken had toegevoegd. Ook laten we zien wat het vertrekpunt van de Boys was (de ‘grand machines’ van de Schotse schilderkunst van de 19e eeuw), zodat later duidelijk wordt in welk opzicht zij vernieuwend waren.
Na de introductie start de eerste fase (1880-1885), de vormingsfase van de Glasgow Boys, waarin zij geïnspireerd raakten o.a. door hun zomerse studie in landelijk Schotland en hun verblijf in schilderkolonie Grez-sur-Loing en ateliers in Frankrijk. Verschillende invloeden passeren de revue, onder meer het naturalisme en de schildertechniek van Jules BastienLepage en Camille Corot. We zien met name landschappelijke thema’s en figuren in rurale setting. Met hun onpretentieuze onderwerpen staan deze werken in de traditie van het Europese realisme. Daarnaast tonen we portretten, figuurstukken en stadsgezichten die in deze periode ontstonden, soms onder invloed van James MacNeill Whistler. In deze fase is een eerste belangstelling voor het decoratieve te zien die na 1885 steeds sterker zal worden. Deze eerste fase culmineerde in de Glasgow Institute Annual Exhibition in 1885, waar de Boys grote indruk maakten.

In de tweede fase (1885-1890) zien we de thema’s uit de eerste fase terugkomen, en daarnaast nieuwe thema’s opkomen. Onder invloed van het Franse impressionisme zien we veel mondaine en stedelijke onderwerpen, zoals de vrijetijdsbesteding van de elite (tennis), toerisme in eigen land en treinstations. Een tweede ontwikkeling vanaf het midden van de jaren 1880 is een Symbolisme dat gekenmerkt wordt door een platte, decoratieve stijl, met inspiratie van McNeill Whistler en de Japanse en Keltische cultuur. Nadat de Boys in 1888 al erkenning kregen op tentoonstellingen in Glasgow, hadden zij in 1890 ongekend succes met
een tentoonstelling bij de Grosvenor Gallery in London, die leidde tot internationale roem, o.a. in Duitsland en in Amerika.

De derde fase betreft de ontwikkeling van de Boys na 1890 tot ongeveer 1900. Rond 1890, na de succesvolle tentoonstellingen in Londen en München, was er internationaal succes. Op dit punt scheidden de wegen zich. Het commerciële werk van sommigen (sentimentele ‘poëzieplaatjes’ met bloemenmeisjes van Hornel en de society portretten van Lavery) laten we grotendeels buiten beschouwing. Wel tonen we het werk dat Hornel en Henry maakten tijdens hun verblijf in Japan (met name figuurstukken), enkele sterke portretten door Guthrie en Walton, een aantal pastels van Guthrie en een serie virtuoze aquarellen die Melville maakte naar aanleiding van zijn reizen naar Spanje, Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten. Het werk dat na 1900 ontstond is minder interessant omdat het zeer commercieel is. Wij tonen daarom het oeuvre tot ongeveer 1900.

Naast de kunsthistorische aspecten (thematiek, stijl, techniek, inspiratiebronnen, reizen, atelierpraktijk) is er ook nadrukkelijk aandacht voor de mensen achter de kunstenaars: hun vriendschappen zijn bepalend geweest voor hun afzonderlijke ontwikkeling. De ‘kruisbestuiving’ die ontstond door gezamenlijke zomers in gehuchten in landelijk Schotland of in Grez-sur-Loing en tijdens atelierbijeenkomsten ‘s winters in Glasgow, ligt ten grondslag aan het oeuvre dat de Boys ons hebben nagelaten. We hebben portretten die de Boys van elkaar maakten, van uitdossingen op bal masqués, van één van hen schilderend in een weiland en daarnaast schetsen, humoristische tekeningetjes en foto’s. Dit element is voor ons heel belangrijk: het brengt d e Boys tot leven voor ons publiek.

De belangrijkste boodschap van de tentoonstelling: - Wie waren de Boys: een stel zeer diverse schilders van ongeveer dezelfde generatie, die bevriend waren en er samen op uittrokken om te schilderen in Schotland en Frankrijk. Voor een deel ondergingen ze dezelfde invloeden en hadden ze dezelfde doelen. De gemene delers waren het zich afzetten tegen de gevestigde orde die tot de late 19e eeuw het beeld bepaalde van de officiële tentoonstellingen in Edinburgh en Glasgow en inspiratie door de schilders van Barbizon en van de Haagse School. - Waarin ligt hun kwaliteit en onderscheidend vermogen: kenmerkend voor de Boys is dat zij zich niet tevreden stelden met invloed uit de tweede hand, maar dat zij zelf opleidingen volgden in Parijse ateliers, gingen werken in de schilderskolonie Grez-sur-Loing, en zelfs naar Japan reisden (in plaats van genoegen te nemen met Japanse prenten die in Europa populair waren in deze periode). Zij maakten zich allerlei invloeden eigen en verwerkten die tot heel eigen, fris en authentiek werk.

3. Opzet

4. Relevantie (vanuit kunsthistorisch perspectief)
Tussen 1990 en 2010 is in Schotland veel onderzoek gedaan naar de Glasgow Boys, wat geresulteerd heeft in een aantal monografische studies en overzichtswerken. Het onderzoek heeft zijn definitieve beslag gekregen in 2010, het jaar van het grote Glasgow Boys retrospectief in Londen en Glasgow, met verschillende publicaties. De nieuwe inzichten die de diverse onderzoeken hebben gebracht, maken het mogelijk deze schilders veel kleurrijker en sterker neer te zetten dan in de tentoonstelling in Amsterdam in 1992.
Anders dan in de tentoonstellingen in Amsterdam 1992 en Glasgow/Londen 2010 en bijbehorende publicaties, zullen we in Assen (ook in de catalogus) in het bijzonder aandacht besteden aan de inspiratie van Schotse door Nederlandse kunstenaars in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw. In hoeverre en in welk opzicht zijn de Glasgow Boys geïnspireerd door de Haagse School die in Schotland in veel collecties te zien was? Hebben zij direct contact gehad met Nederlandse kunstenaars? Zijn zij in Nederland geweest en hebben zij hier kunstenaars
en musea bezocht, gewerkt? Zijn Nederlandse kunstenaars op hun beurt naar Schotland gereisd en hebben zij daar gewerkt (musea, kunstenaars leren kennen)? Zijn zij beïnvloed en/of geïnspireerd door Schotse kunst of de Boys in het bijzonder? De Haagse School als inspiratiebron is slechts kort aan de orde geweest in eerdere publicaties over de Glasgow Boys. Wij verwachten hier nog onontgonnen terrein te vinden. Het verzamelen van de Haagse School in Schotland is in diverse publicaties aan de orde geweest. In het kader van deze tentoonstelling belichten wij dit onderwerp aan de orde in de context van de Glasgow Boys en hun relatie tot Nederland en Nederlandse kunstenaars.
Een ander verschil met de tentoonstelling en publicaties van 2010 is dat wij in de catalogus aandacht zullen besteden aan atelierpraktijk, door te kijken naar het gebruik van fotografie en schetsen bij het schilderen. Een case study van Guthrie’s schilderij In the Orchard zal licht werpen op de werkwijze van deze schilder die beschouwd wordt als de sterkste van de groep, maar die onzeker was over de composities van zijn figuurstukken en daaraan eindeloos bleef sleutelen. Een schetsboek in de Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh in combinatie met sporen van een eerdere compositie onder de verflaag maken dit duidelijk. Eventueel kunnen meer schilderijen met behulp van X-rays door Schotse conservation-scientists onderzocht worden op onderschildering. Vanuit onze collectie Kunst 1885-1935 waarin veel ateliermateriaal aanwezig is, hebben wij bijzondere belangstelling voor dit onderwerp.

Naast nieuwe feiten op het gebied van de artistieke relaties Schotland-Nederland zal nieuw onderzoek door Schotse experts nieuwe kennis opleveren op deelonderwerpen zoals het realisme en de decoratieve tendens die al vroeg in de jaren 1880 te zien is in het werk van sommige Glasgow Boys. In de catalogus zullen aan deze deelonderwerpen diverse essays worden gewijd. We vinden het cruciaal om Schotse experts, o.a. de conservatoren van de bruikleengevende musea, als auteurs van de catalogus te hebben.
5. Relatie met de eigen collectie
Deze tentoonstelling die focust op de periode 1880-1900 in Schotland geeft een internationaal kader aan onze eigen collectie Kunst 1885-1935, waarin vergelijkbare realistische, impressionistische en symbolistisch-decoratieve ontwikkelingen vertegenwoordigd zijn. Julius van de Sande Bakhuijzen, Alphonse Stengelin, Max Liebermann en Vincent van Gogh en andere schilders die in het laatste kwart van de 19e eeuw in Drenthe werkten, waren net als de Glasgow Boys op zoek naar ongerepte, rurale gebieden waar zij geïnspireerd door Barbizon- konden studeren naar het landschap en het eenvoudige boerenleven. Theo Molkenboers Portret van mijn moeder echoot net als veel Glasgows werk de portretten van James McNeill Whistler, terwijl de decoratief-symbolistische werken van sommige van de Boys in onze collectie aansluiting vinden bij het werk van Jan Toorop en Willem van Konijnenburg. De beoogde opzet van catalogus en tentoonstelling tenslotte, met aandacht voor atelierpraktijk, sluit aan bij onze collectie ateliermaterialen (schetsen, schilderskisten e.a.) die ontstaan is vanuit de Stichting Schone Kunsten rond 1900.
6. Publicatie
De catalogus is een full colour populair-wetenschappelijke publicatie waarin we nieuwe kennis op het gebied van de Glasgow Boys zullen presenteren. De catalogus bevat een inleiding, thematische artikelen over de ontwikkeling van de Glasgow Boys, twee essays over de Schots-Nederlandse artistieke relaties en entries over alle tentoongestelde werken. De auteurs van de catalogus zijn Schotse experts. Kenneth McConkey, Frances Fowle, Roger Billcliffe en Jennifer Melville zijn grote namen in Schotland op het terrein van de Glasgow Boys. McConkey is emeritus professor van de University of Northumbria in Newcastle, Frances Fowle is docent aan Edinburgh University en research curator bij de Scottish National
Gallery, Roger Billcliffe is galeriehouder en auteur van het standaardwerk over de Glasgow Boys, Jennifer Melville is hoofd collecties en onderzoek van de National Trust for Scotland en voormalig hoofdconservator van Aberdeen Art Gallery. Haar phd gaat over het verzamelen van de Haagse School in Schotland. De enige Nederlandse auteur, Suzanne Veldink, was eerder verbonden aan de musea van Glasgow en Edinburgh en is specialist op het gebied van Matthijs Maris en het verzamelen van Nederlandse kunst in Schotland. Als Nederlands kunsthistoricus kijkt zij op een andere manier dan de Schotten naar de invloed van de Haagse School op de Glasgow Boys. Deze experts presenteren nieuwe inzichten ten opzichte van de tentoonstelling en catalogus van 2010.

7. Publiek
De afdeling Publiek formuleert plannen en ontwikkelt producten die tot doel hebben een zo breed mogelijk publiek te informeren, te activeren en te inspireren, vóór, tijdens en na het bezoek aan de tentoonstelling. De tentoonstelling The Glasgow Boys. Pioniers van de Schotse Schilderkunst (1880-1900) (hierna The Glasgow Boys genoemd) wordt sterk in de markt gezet met zoveel mogelijk communicatiemiddelen in een zo breed mogelijke context. Doelgroepen daarbij zijn de cultuurtoerist, de liefhebber (waaronder geïnteresseerden in countrylife), de professional (waaronder de zakelijke markt) en het onderwijs (primair en voortgezet ).
Strategie De kennis over de Glasgow Boys is in Nederland nog niet wijd verspreid. De strategie is daarom het onderwerp te lanceren met een grote mix van vrije publiciteit en betaalde reclame. Leading image en titel zullen in eerste instantie aan elkaar gekoppeld worden, waardoor potentiële bezoekers zich een beeld kunnen vormen van de tentoonstelling.
Communicatieboodschap Bevriende groep jonge Schotse kunstenaars uit eind 19de eeuw zet zich af tegen gevestigde orde. De kunstenaars worden door hun onderwerpskeuze vergeleken met de Franse Impressionisten, de School van Barbizon en de Haagse School Schilderden veel realistische landschappen en figuurstukken over het leven op het platteland, maar ook moderne, mondaine onderwerpen zoals de vrijetijdsbesteding van de elite, bijvoorbeeld de tennissport. Waren leergierig en stelden zich niet tevreden met invloed uit de tweede hand: reisden zelf door Europa, naar Japan, Noord Afrika en het Midden-Oosten. Zeer succesvolle kunstenaars in binnen- en buitenland tijdens en ná hun leven. Circa 20% niet eerder te zien geweest . Meer dan 70 schilderijen en 50 tekeningen en aquarellen van de 10 belangrijkste kunstenaars. Vergelijkbaar met kunstenaars als Jacob en Matthijs Maris en andere meesters van de Haagse School, de Amerikaan James MacNeill Whistler en met de Franse Impressionisten.
PR/Communicatie De communicatie is er op gericht potentiële bezoekers te interesseren en te motiveren om een bezoek te brengen aan deze tentoonstelling. Daarnaast zal PR/Communicatie het publiek tijdens de tentoonstelling informeren over extra activiteiten en bijzondere wetenswaardigheden betreffende het thema. Het genereren van een toeristische en daardoor economische impuls aan de provincie Drenthe en de stad Assen is integraal onderdeel van de strategie.
Target van The Glasgow Boys is minimaal 70.000 bezoekers in de periode 22 september 2015 – 7 februari 2016 (20 weken, circa 3500 per week).
Om de tentoonstelling onder de aandacht te brengen, wordt een publiciteits- en marketingcampagne ontwikkeld waarin alle inspanningen in tijd en op doelgroepen worden uitgewerkt. Er worden specifieke marketingacties ontwikkeld voor zowel individueel als groepsgebonden publiek, met name gericht op de bovengenoemde doelgroepen. Deze acties worden deels weggezet in landelijke en regionale media en deels in de media van samenwerkingspartners als Marketing Drenthe, de Vrije Academie, SRC-Cultuurvakanties, de Museumkaart, sponsors, begunstigers etc. De campagne is grotendeels op de Nederlandse markt gericht, maar er wordt ook specifiek aandacht besteed aan de Engelse en Duitse markt.
Er wordt fors ingezet op het verkrijgen van free-publicity op zowel regionaal, landelijk als internationaal niveau. De landelijke en internationale pers wordt vanaf het voorjaar van 2015 actief benaderd. In de eerste helft van 2015 zal er, in samenwerking met SRCCultuurvakanties een persreis voor journalisten van de nationale schrijvende pers en RTV naar Schotland gehouden worden. Er wordt verder ingezet op het genereren van mond-totmond reclame en het hypen van het onderwerp, door de tentoonstelling al in een vroegtijdig stadium via alle mogelijke kanalen onder de aandacht te brengen. Daarbij wordt gezocht naar samenwerking met een RTV-partner. Er wordt sterk ingezet op social media: Facebook, Twitter en YouTube. Daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van een eigen promotiefilm waarin de tentoonstelling wervend wordt uitgelicht.
Er worden verschillende jointpromotion acties opgezet met tentoonstellingssponsors om een zo groot mogelijk bereik te genereren. In samenwerking met SRC-Cultuurreizen zullen speciale publieksreizen naar Schotland worden georganiseerd.
Om de free-publicity optimaal te ondersteunen wordt gebruik gemaakt van betaalde reclame in een zo breed mogelijk context en over een zo groot mogelijk gebied. De tentoonstellingen en de gerelateerde activiteiten zullen via folders, affiches, tv-commercials, advertenties in de gedrukte media en inserts de diverse doelgroepen bereiken. Het printwerk van de tentoonstelling krijgt een identieke basisvormgeving, waarmee de herkenbaarheid wordt vergroot. De tentoonstelling wordt op specifieke beurzen, zoals de Uitmarkt Amsterdam 2015, aangekondigd.
Onderwijs Voor het Primair Onderwijs (PO) en het Voortgezet Onderwijs (VO) worden kunsteducatieve programma’s aangeboden waarbij het thema van de tentoonstelling in een breder kader wordt geschetst.
De leerlingen van het PO maken een reis door de tijd. Ze vergelijken onze beeldtaal en de wereld van nu met die van de Glasgow Boys. Daarbij volgen ze de Glasgow Boys op de voet bij hun reizen naar het buitenland en ontdekken wat zij daar zoal tegenkwamen. Het programma voor het VO draait om het begrip identiteit. We kijken met de leerlingen hoe de Glasgow Boys zich afzetten tegen de gevestigde orde en zich tegelijk lieten inspireren door wat zij elders in de wereld tegenkwamen. Dat vergelijken we met de manier waarop jongeren van nu rebelleren tegen de mensen die dichtbij hen staan en zich tegelijk sterk laten beïnvloeden door hun vrienden, de media en onbereikbare idolen. Een confrontatie die de leerlingen aan het denken zet over de vorming van hun hun eigen identiteit.
Deze educatieve programma’s zijn zoals gebruikelijk in het Drents Museum ook geschikt voor het Speciaal Basis Onderwijs (SBO) en het Speciaal Voortgezet Onderwijs (SVO)
Publieksactiviteiten De tentoonstelling leent zich uitstekend voor het aanbieden van vrije inleidingen waarbij dieper wordt ingegaan op de tijd waarin de Glasgow Boys leefden en werkten. De vrije inleidingen worden gedurende de gehele looptijd van de tentoonstelling op vaste dagen in de week aangeboden.
We vragen een bekend Drents (amateur) theatergezelschap of dansclub om een of meerdere schilderijen te ‘adopteren’ door er een toneelstuk/dansvoorstelling bij te maken. Dit stuk wordt een aantal malen opgevoerd.
Voor kinderen wordt een ‘Glasgow Boys-toolkit’ ontwikkeld waar bij op een speelse wijze en met veel doe-activiteiten het thema wordt uitgediept voor deze doelgroep.
Tijdens de vakanties bieden we voor de jeugd een workshop aan waarbij ze onder begeleiding van een professionele regisseur in de vorm van meespeeltheater scènes op een of meer schilderijen van de Glasgow Boys uitspelen.
Arrangementen Publieksarrangementen worden ontwikkeld met een rondleiding (of inleiding) over de tentoonstelling, die naar keuze kan worden aangevuld met een (Schotse) high tea en/of whisky proeverij.
Er komt een serie lezingen voor volwassenen over de Glasgow Boys waarin we dieper ingaan op leven en werk van deze kunstenaarsgroep met bijzondere aandacht voor onder andere de schilders kolonie Grez-sur-Loing in Frankrijk en de invloed van hun reizen naar o.a. Spanje, Japan en Afrika op hun werk. Ook de beïnvloeding van Schotse door Nederlandse kunstenaars zal onderwerp zijn van deze serie.
Voor specifieke groepen wordt bij de start van de tentoonstelling een workshop aangeboden waarbij de deelnemers na een uitgebreide introductie de provincie intrekken om onder leiding van een schilderdocent/docent fotografie de natuur te vangen in de stijl van de Glasgow Boys.
Events Naast de tentoonstelling organiseert het museum een aantal publieksevenementen, die tot doel hebben extra verdieping te geven aan het thema. De evenementen hebben een laagdrempelig karakter en worden in een brede Schotse context aangeboden. Er wordt naar gestreefd om de evenementen in nauwe samenwerking met externe partners te organiseren voor een groter publieksbereik. - Whisky-proeverij in samenwerking met Bos&Bos catering - Highland Games in samenwerking met de binnenstadsvereniging van Assen - Pipes of Scotland- concert in samenwerking met Theater De Nieuwe Kolk - Schotse literaire avond in samenwerking met Bibliotheek Drenthe.
Winkel Voor extra verdieping, achtergrondinformatie en sfeerbeleving wordt in de Museumwinkel diverse merchandise aangeboden, variërend van boeken over Schotse schilderkunst, leefstijl en natuur tot Schotse kilts en muziek. 1. Synopsis
In this exhibition, Drents Museum introduces the Glasgow Boys to the Netherlands. In cooperation with the museums of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, as well as other museum-related and private lenders, we can show 70 to 100 paintings and 50 works on paper. As this exhibition is the first real introduction of the Glasgow Boys to the Dutch public, we plan to organize a wide-ranging retrospective that focuses on the 10 main artists and their developments, themes, interests, techniques, journeys, friendships, and studio practices, with works in different media (paintings, watercolors, gouaches, and drawings). Our focus will be on the group’s heyday between 1880 and 1900. By and large, we will not deal with their later (mostly commercial) works. The exhibition is chronologically structured along the lines of an introduction and three development stages. These stages each consist of themes. Our aim is to show approximately 20% of little publicized work, so that, in comparison with the retrospectives organized in Glasgow (Glasgow Museums) and London (Royal Academy of Arts) in 2010, the exhibition and catalogue will have news value not only because of their contents, but also because of their selection of works. To illustrate the Glasgow Boys’ main sources of inspiration, we will show a few works by the Hague School and by Jules Bastien-Lepage. For the introduction of the Glasgow Boys to the Netherlands, it is of particular interest that, especially with regard to their choice of subjects and compositions, the Boys seem to have been influenced by the Hague School.
As a context for this first exhibition of the Glasgow Boys in the Netherlands, we will focus on the agelong relationship between the Netherlands and Scotland in the commercial, religious, academic, and artistic field. In view of the many affinities between Scotland and the Netherlands, it is not surprising that, throughout the ages, Scottish painters have looked at Dutch art a great deal and that, at the end of the 19th century, Scottish industrials collected many Dutch works, including works by the Hague School. The Calvinist tradition of both countries may explain their shared preference for unpretentious subjects, often in a setting of grey skies which are normal in both countries.
Apart from the similarities between the Netherlands and Scotland, there are also similarities between Scotland and Drenthe, such as the relatively sparsely populated countryside with its unspoilt nature, which is attractive to artists, and a popular place for painters’ colonies. In this respect, it is interesting that, in 1862, among the first paintings acquired by the Aberdonian James Forbes White, who would become a major collector of the Hague School, was a work called Heide, Drenthe (current location unknown) by Alexander Mollinger, which shows a peasant’s wife walking on a tract of desolate moorland.
Our exhibition is the first major Glasgow Boys presentation outside Great Britain since 1990. It is true that, in 1992, works by the Glasgow Boys were exhibited in Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum) in the context of an exhibition about arts in Glasgow around 1900, but it differed from our exhibition in that much of its focus was on applied arts: Mackintosh and the Glasgow School. Since then, much research has been done in Scotland on the works created by these painters. Various monographic and retrospective studies resulted in the above-mentioned retrospective exhibitions at Glasgow and London in 2010. The new insights acquired from the various studies enable us to give these painters a much more colorful and powerful profile than in Amsterdam in 1992. Moreover, we will present the works by the Glasgow boys in a context that is different from that in 1992. We will discuss this in further detail below.
2. Storyline
A brief introduction. Who were the Glasgow Boys? In the 1880s, the works created by a group of young Scottish painters had their heyday. They had been active from the end of the 1870s and from the mid-1880s they became successful at home and abroad. This group called themselves The Boys, and they later became known as the Glasgow School of Painters (although not all of them had a connection with Glasgow).
They were not a fixed group with a programme, but rather a party of very diverse painters of about the same generation who were friends and went out painting together in Scotland and France. To some extent, they shared the same influences and had the same goals. Their common denominators were their opposition against the establishment, who dominated the scene of the official exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow until the end of the 19th century, and their inspiration by the painters of Barbizon and the Hague School. More particularly, some of the Boys were influenced by Corot, Bastien-Lepage, and McNeill Whistler. In their modern choice of design and compositions, some of the Boys can be compared with the French Impressionists. Although the Boys have not been in contact with Les Nabis, some of them show a similar kind of symbolism and focus on decorative elements. Characteristically, the Boys did not content themselves with indirect influences but, instead, personally participated in training courses in Parisian studios, started working in the painters colony of Grez-sur-Loing, and even travelled to Japan (rather than contenting themselves with the Japanese prints that were popular in Europe during this period). They absorbed various influences and incorporated them into their highly idiosyncratic, fresh and authentic works.
The core group consists of: James Guthrie, Edward Walton, Joseph Crawhall, James Paterson, John Lavery, William York MacGregor, George Henry, Edward Hornel, Arthur Melville, and William Kennedy.
The exhibition will be organized in a loosely chronological and, within that, thematic order. By way of introduction to the story of the Glasgow Boys, we will briefly touch upon the long-lasting relationship between Scotland and the Netherlands. The Scottish collections of the Hague School and the artistic relations that had already existed a generation before the Glasgow Boys will be illustrated by, among other things, a portrait painted by three Scottish painters in 1870 of Joseph Israëls, who visited the collector James Forbes White. At the end of the painting session, Israëls said: ‘Now I will show you what Rembrandt would do’, upon which he added a few virtuoso strokes of the brush. Also, we will show what the Boys’ starting-point was (the ‘grand machines’ of 19th century Scottish painting), so that it will subsequently become clear in what respect they were innovative.
After the introduction, we embark on the first stage (1880-1885), the formative stage of the Glasgow Boys, during which they got inspired by their summer-study in rural Scotland and by their stay in the painters’ colony of Grez-sur-Loing and in French studios . Various influences will be dealt with, including naturalism and the painting technique of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Camille Corot. More specifically, we will have a look at rural themes and figures in rural settings. With their unpretentious subject matter, these works stand in the tradition of European realism. In addition, we will show portraits, figurative pieces, and townscapes that were created during this period and that were sometimes influenced by James McNeill Whistler. At this stage, we observe a first interest in decorative aspects, which was to become stronger and stronger after 1885. This first stage culminated in the Glasgow Institute Annual Exhibition of 1885, at which the Boys made a big impression.
In the second stage (1885-1890), we see the themes of the first stage repeated as well as new themes emerging. Under the influence of French Impressionism, we see many mundane and urban subjects, such as leisure activities by the elite (tennis), domestic tourism, and train stations. A second development from the middle of the 1880s is a form of symbolism characterized by a flat, decorative style, inspired by McNeill Whistler and Celtic culture. After the recognition gained by the Boys at exhibitions in Glasgow, they met with unprecedented success at an exhibition in Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1890, which led to international fame, for instance in Germany and America.
The third stage concerns the development of the Boys after 1890 until circa 1900. Around 1890, after the successful exhibitions of London and Munich, they enjoyed international success. At this point, they went their separate ways. We will not deal with most of the commercial work produced by some of them (e.g. sentimental flower-girls’ pictures for children’s verse albums by Hornel, and society portraits by Lavery). However, we will show the works created by Hornel and Henry during their stay in Japan (notably the figurative pieces), some powerful portraits by Guthrie and Walton, a number of pastels by Guthrie, and a series of virtuoso watercolors created by Melville on the occasion of his journeys to Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East. The works created after 1900 are less interesting because they are very commercial. For this reason, we will show their works until about 1900.
Apart from the art-historical aspects (themes, style, technique, sources of inspiration, travel, studio practice), there is also a strong focus on the persons behind the artists: their friendships have been crucial to their separate developments. Their ‘cross fertilization’, which came about during the summers they spent together in hamlets in rural Scotland or in Grez-sur-Loing and at studio gatherings in Glasgow during wintertime, is fundamental to the works the Boys left behind. We have portraits which they painted of each other, paintings of their costumes at masked balls, a portrait of one of them painting in a meadow, and also sketches, comical doodles, and photos. This aspect is very important to us: it brings the Boys alive for our public.
The main message of the exhibition:
- Who were the Boys: a number of very diverse painters of about the same generation, who were friends and went out together to paint in Scotland and France. To some extent, they shared the same influences and had the same goals. - What constitutes their quality and distinctive power: Characteristically, the Boys did not content themselves with indirect influences. They personally participated in training courses in Parisian studios, started working in the painters’ colony of Grez-sur-Loing, and even travelled to Japan (rather than contenting themselves with the Japanese prints that were popular in Europe during this period). They absorbed various influences and incorporated them into their highly idiosyncratic, fresh and authentic works.

4 Relevance (from art-historical perspective)
A lot of research into the Glasgow Boys has been done in Scotland between 1990 and 2010, which has resulted in a number of monographic studies and retrospectives. This research came to its definitive conclusion in 2010, the year of the big Glasgow Boys retrospectives in London and Glasgow, in the form of several publications. New perspectives, produced by the various studies, enable us to give a much more colorful and pronounced picture of these painters than was possible at the exhibition of Amsterdam in 1992.
In contrast with the exhibitions in Amsterdam 1992 and Glasgow/London 2010 with their accompanying publications, the exhibition in Assen will pay special attention (also in the catalogue) to the inspiration provided by Dutch artists to their Scottish counterparts in the second half of the 19th century. To what extent and in what respect were the Glasgow Boys inspired by the Hague School, whose works could be seen in the many Scottish collections? Were they in direct contact with Dutch artists?
Did they stay in the Netherlands and did they visit artists and museums here, did they work here? Did Dutch artists in turn travel to Scotland, and did they work there (and get acquainted with museums, artists)? Were they influenced and/or inspired by Scottish art of the Boys in particular? The Hague School as a source of inspiration has been touched upon only briefly in previous publications about the Glasgow Boys. We expect that we will enter as yet unchartered territory here. Scottish collections of works by the Hague School have been dealt with in various publications. In the present exhibition, we will deal with this subject in the context of the Glasgow Boys and their relationship to the Netherlands and Dutch artists.
Another difference with the exhibition and publications of 2010 is that, in the catalogue, we will pay some attention to studio practice and take a look at the use of photography and sketches in painting. A case-study of Guthrie’s painting In the Orchard will shed some light on the work-method of this painter, who is regarded as the strongest of the group but who felt uncertain about the compositions of his figure pieces and endlessly kept fine-tuning them. Tis will clearly be illustrated by a sketchbook in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, in combination with traces of a previous composition found below the top-layer of paint. Other paintings may also be tested for underpainting. Because of our collection of Art 1885-1935, which contains a lot of studio materials, we have a special interest in this matter.
Apart from new facts regarding the artistic relationships between Scotland and the Netherlands, new research by Scottish experts will yield new information about aspects such as realism and the decorative tendency that can already be discerned in the early 1880s in the works of some Glasgow Boys. In the catalogue, we will devote several essays to these aspects. We consider it crucial to have Scottish experts, such as the curators of the lending museums, as the authors of the catalogue.
5. Relation to our own collection
This exhibition, which focuses on the period of 1880-1900 in Scotland, provides an international framework for our own collection of Art 1885-1935, in which similar realistic, impressionistic, and symbolic-decorative developments are represented. Julius van de Sande Bakhuijzen, Alphonse Stengelin, Max Liebermann, Vincent van Gogh, and other painters who worked in Drenthe in the last quarter of the 19th century resembled the Glasgow Boys in that they too were looking for unspoilt rural areas where, inspired by Barbizon, they could make studies of landscapes and simple peasant’s lives. Like many of the Glasgow works, Theo Molkenboer’s Portrait of My Mother echoes the portraits created by James McNeill Whistler, while the decorative-symbolic works by some of the Boys show a link with works in our collection by Jan Toorop and Willem van Konijnenburg. Lastly, the proposed layout of our catalogue and exhibition, with its focus on studio practice, links up with our collection of studio materials (sketches, painting boxes, and the like), which originated from the Fine Arts Foundation around 1900.
6. Publication
The catalogue is a full-colour popular-scientific publication in which we will present new information regarding the Glasgow Boys. The catalogue contains an introduction, thematic articles on the development of the Glasgow Boys, two essays on Scottish-Dutch artistic relations and entries on all of the exhibited works. The authors of the catalogue are Scottish experts. Kenneth McConkey, Frances Fowles, Roger Billcliffe, and Jennifer Melville are big names in Scotland with regard to the Glasgow Boys. McConkey is an emeritus professor of the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, Frances Fowle is a teacher at Edinburgh University and research curator at the Scottish National
Gallery, Roger Billcliffe is a gallery owner and author of the standard work on the Glasgow Boys, Jennifer Melville is the head of collections and research of the National Trust for Scotland and former chief curator of Aberdeen Art Gallery. She did her PhD on the collecting in Scotland of works by the Hague School. The only Dutch author, Suzanne Veldink, previously worked for the museums of Glasgow and Edinburgh and is a specialist in the field of Matthijs Maris and the collection of Dutch art in Scotland. As an art historian, her perspective on the influence of the Hague School on the Glasgow Boys is different from the way Scottish people look at it. 7. Public Services
The Public Services Department draws up plans and develops products for the purpose of providing informing, activating, and inspiring the widest possible public before, during, and after visiting the exhibition. The exhibition The Glasgow Boys, Pioneers of Scottish Painting (1880-1900) (from here on referred to as The Glasgow Boys) will be marketed energetically by means of as many communication tools as possible in the widest possible context. Target groups include the cultural tourist, the enthusiast (including those interested in country life), the professional (including the corporate market) and educational institutions (primary and secondary).
Strategy As yet, knowledge about the Glasgow Boys is not widespread in the Netherlands. Hence the strategy is to market the subject with a large mix of free publicity and paid advertisements. Leading image and title will initially be combined, so that potential visitors will be able to get an idea of the exhibition.
Communication message
At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Scottish artist-friends rebel against the establishment. In their subject choice, the artists are compared to the French Impressionists, the School o0f Barbizon, and the Hague School They painted many realistic landscapes and figure pieces about rural life, as well as modern, mundane subjects such as the leisure activities of the elite, e.g. tennis. They were keen to learn and did not content themselves with indirect influences: they personally travelled through Europe, to Japan, North Africa, and the Middle East. They were very successful artists at home and abroad both during their lifetime and afterwards. About 20% has not been exhibited before. Over 70 paintings and 50 drawings and watercolors by the 10 main artists. There can be compared to artists such as Jacob and Matthijs Maris and other masters of the Hague School, the American James MacNeill Whistler, and the French Impressionists.
PR/Communication The communication activities will be aimed at generating interest and motivation among potential visitors so that they will visit this exhibition. Moreover, PR/Communication will provide the public with extra information during the exhibition about extra activities and curiosities regarding the theme. Giving a tourist, and hence an economic boost to Drenthe and the town of Assen is an integral part of the strategy.
Target of The Glasgow Boys is a minimum of 70,000 visitors in the period of 22 September 2015 – 7 February 2016 (20 weeks, about 3500 per week).
To bring the exhibition to people’s attention, a publicity- and marketing campaign will be developed in which all activities will be mapped out in terms of time and target groups. Specific marketing activities will be developed for both individual s and group-related members of the public, with a special focus on the above-mentioned target groups. These activities will partly be transferred to national and regional media, and partly to the media of collaborating partners such as Marketing Drenthe, the Vrije Academie, SRC Cultuurvakanties, the Museumkaart ,sponsors, patrons, etc. The campaign will mainly be aimed at the Dutch market, but there will also be a specific focus on the English and German market.
A big effort will be made to acquire free publicity at regional, national and international level. The national and international press will be actively contacted from the spring of 2015. In the first half of 2015 a press trip to Scotland will be organized for journalists of the national press , radio and television, in cooperation with SRC-Cultuurvakanties. Other activities will focus on generating wordof-mouth advertising and creating a hype around the subject, by bringing the exhibition to people’s attention through every possible channel at an early stage. For this, we aim to work with a radio/TV partner. There will be strong focus on social media: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. For this, we will use our own promotion film in which the exhibition will be advertised in an attractive way.
Various joint-promotion activities will be organized with exhibition sponsors in order to generate the biggest coverage possible. For the public, special trips to Scotland will be organized in cooperation with SRC-Cultuurvakanties.
For the optimization of free publicity, we will make use of paid advertising in the widest possible context and covering the widest possible area. The exhibitions and related activities will reach the various target groups via brochures, posters, TV commercials, press advertisements, and inserts. The printed matter of the exhibition will have an identical basic design to increase its recognition value. The exhibition will be announced at specific fairs, such as the 2015 Uitmarkt Amsterdam.
Education For Primary Education and Secondary Education, art-educational programmes will be made available in which the theme of the exhibition will be outlined in a wider context.
Primary school pupils can make a journey through time. They compare our visual language and today’s world with that of the Glasgow boys. In doing so, they closely follow the Glasgow Boys on their journeys abroad and discover the various things they came across. The secondary-school programme centres on the concept of identity. The students join us in seeing how the Glasgow Boys rebelled against the establishment and, at the same time, got inspired by what they encountered elsewhere in the world. We compare that with the way in which today’s youngsters rebel against the people close to them and, at the same time, allow themselves to be strongly influenced by their friends, the media, and unattainable idols. A confrontation that makes students think about their own identity.
As usual , these educational programmes in Drents Museum are also suitable for Special Primary Education and Special Secondary Education.
Activities for the public The exhibition is eminently suitable for offering free introductions, in which the time in which the Glasgow Boys lived and worked is explored in greater depth. The free introductions will be offered on fixed days in the week for the full duration of the exhibition.
we will ask a well-known (amateur) theatre company or dance club from Drenthe to ‘adopt’ one or more paintings by creating an applicable play or dance performance for it/them. This performance will be put on a number of times.
For children a ‘Glasgow Boys toolkit’ will be developed, with which the theme will be explored in further depth for this target group in a playful way and by means of many hands-on activities.
During holidays, we will offer youngsters a workshop in which, in the form of a join-in theatre under the supervision of a professional director, they can play out scenes from one or more of the paintings by the Glasgow Boys.
Package deals Package deals will be arranged for the public that will include a guided tour (or introduction) about the exhibition and may optionally be supplemented by a (Scottish) high tea and/or a whisky-tasting event.
There will be a series of lectures for adults about the Glasgow Boys in which we will further explore the lives and works of this group of artists, paying special attention to, among other things, the painters’ colony of Grez-sur-Loing in France and the influence on their works of their journeys to i.a. Spain, Japan and Africa. Another topic in this series will be the influence of Dutch artists on their Scottish counterparts.
For specific groups, a workshop will be offered at the start of the exhibition in which, after an elaborate introduction, the participants will move into the province and, under the supervision of a teacher of painting/photography, capture nature in the style of the Glasgow Boys.
Events Apart from the exhibition, the museum will organize a number of public events intended to give extra depth to the theme. The events have a low threshold level and will be offered in a Scottish context. The aim is to organize the events for a wider public, in close cooperation with external partners. - Whisky-tasting event ,in cooperation with Bos&Bos catering - Highland Games, in cooperation with the Assen City Club (‘Binnenstadsvereniging Assen’) - Pipes of Scotland – concert in cooperation with ‘Theater De Nieuwe Kolk’ - Scottish literary evening, in cooperation with Drenthe Library (‘Bibliotheek Drenthe’)
Shop For additional details, background information, and a sense of ambience, all sorts of merchandise will be available in the Museum Shop, ranging from books about Scottish painting, lifestyle and nature to Scottish kilts and music. Of course, the publication accompanying the exhibition will be for sale, and there will be plenty of postcards and pictures from the exhibition
