Leben im Sturm der Zeiten, verfolgt von flackernden Blitzen aus roher
Materie und purer Energie.
Die trägen Massen wälzen sich wie Lavaströme zu den gigantischen,
schimmernden Tempeln der Lohnarbeit und zurück in blinde Wohnhöhlen
durch Wälder scheppernder Lautsprecher mit Gehirnwäsche Botschaften

Roughly-hewn cogwheels turn in a harmonious monotony
meshing with a rumble, keeping the unfathomable system irremediably
alive through the storms of time, hunted by flickering flashes of raw
material and pure energy.
The sluggish masses throng like lava streams to the gigantic,
gleaming temples of wage labour and back to sightless cave-like dwellings
through forests of clanging loudspeakers churning out brainwashing messages
and prayers.
The flow of bodies delivers newly synchronised, quivering
worm feed by the second for the fuel-oozing, gluttonous maws of incarceration
factories of surplus value

Source text - German Monique van Genderen experimentiert mit der Flüchtigkeit des Momentes. In die großflächigen Formate steckt sie die Idee eines Schauspiels, welches mit vertrauten Details vorübergehende Alltagserfahrungen einfängt. Sie zählt zu einer neuen Generation von abstrakten Malern und sieht sich mit ihren Arbeiten in der Tradition von Künstlern wie Hans Hartung, Hans Haacke und Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Die in Los Angeles lebende Künstlerin verschmilzt „50er Jahre Abstraktion mit heutigen Fragen zu Ort und Kontext“.
Mit Vinyl-Klebefolien collagiert van Genderen ihre Bilderwelt direkt auf die Wand. Diese Arbeitsweise nimmt sie aus ihren Erfahrungen, die sie als Schildermacherin für Außenwerbung in L.A. gesammelt hat. Wie ausgeschnittene Inseln in gelb, lila, braun und schwarz auf hellem Grund klebt sie Folienschnipsel in dichten und losen Kompositionen großflächig auf die Architektur der Galerie.
Diese Arbeitsweise hat die Künstlerin auf ihre Malereien übertragen: Runde und eckige Formen setzt sie als farbige oder monochrome Zeichen auf die Leinwand und zieht mit dem Messer Linien durch das Acryl als subjektive malerische Geste. Sie formieren sich zu aufstrahlenden Sonnen oder aufblätternden Blüten. Linien knäueln, kreisen und schlängeln zwischen den Flächen. Die Farbtöne trägt sie aus einer Palette von Öl- und Acryl-Mischungen in nuancenreichen Tönen auf leinenbespannte Holzuntergründe auf.
Kontrastierend zu den luftig hingesetzten, über den Malgrund schwebenden bunten Formen und Linien stehen ihre dunklen Lackarbeiten. Sie verdünnt die Farbe und trägt sie großflächig auf wie Aquarell, mit Pinsel, Bürste, Walze. Die Lasuren schimmern in Schichten, matter oder glänzender Firnis reflektiert den umgebenden Raum in einem faszinierenden Spiel von Licht, Glanz und Tiefe, und machen die Malereien selbst zu Lichtskulpturen.
Durch ihre Bild-Sprache kreiert Monique van Genderen eine Form der Abstraktion, mit der sie zeigen will „wie wir denken und Verbindungen herstellen. Nicht wie wir die Welt wirklich sehen“. Den Verbindungsfäden folgend, die sich zwischen den Arbeiten der Ausstellung in so unterschiedlichen Medien und Formaten entspinnen, wird der Betrachter in die „nicht-lineare und nicht-objektive Erzählweise“ ihrer Erfahrungswelt eingeführt.

Her large-scale formats contain a sense of drama, which captures fleeting everyday experiences via familiar details. She is a member of a new generation of abstract painters, and draws creative parallels with artists like Hans Hartung, Hans Haacke and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. The artist, who lives in Los Angeles, fuses “1950s abstraction with contemporary questions on place and context”.
van Genderen uses adhesive vinyl film to create collages illustrating her visionary world directly on the wall. She developed this technique as a result of experience gained during her time as a sign maker in the field of exterior advertising in L.A. She sticks scraps of film all over the gallery walls, forming dense, flowing compositions which resemble stencilled islands in yellow, purple, brown and black on a light background.
The artist has also transferred this technique to her painting, placing round and angular shapes on the canvas, which take the form of coloured or monochromatic signs, subsequently scoring lines through the acrylic with a knife as a subjective artistic gesture. These come to resemble the sun’s rays or budding blossoms. Tangled lines revolve and snake their way between the surfaces. van Genderen applies a mixed selection of nuanced oil and acrylic shades to her canvas-covered wooden backgrounds.
Her dark glazed works form a stark contrast to the colourful shapes and lines, which float blithely here and there over the painted surface. She dilutes the varnish and applies it generously, like a watercolour, using paintbrushes, brushes and rollers. The glaze shimmers in layers, and matt and glossy varnish reflects the surrounding space in a fascinating play of light, lustre and depth, transforming the paintings into light sculptures.
Monique van Genderen creates a type of abstraction via her visionary language, with which she wishes to reveal “how we think and generate connections. Not how we really see the world”. If the observer follows the connecting threads which emanate from the exhibition’s multi-faceted works, they will, inexorably, be initiated into the “non-linear and non-objective narrative” of the artist’s experience.

Source text - German Zauberwelt im Zirkuszelt! Die Magie des Zirkus lebt von Clowns, Tieren und Akrobaten. Die Zirkusmagie lebt aber auch von generationenübergreifender Begeisterung, von Tradition und gleichzeitiger Innovation. Der verführerische Glanz dieses Zaubers ist auch dieses Jahr – nunmehr zum 91. Mal – im Grand Chapiteau des Schweizer National-Circus Knie in der ganzen Schweiz zu erleben.
Rapperswil, März 2009 „C’est magique“, so der Name des neuen Programms, welches vor Jugendlichkeit und Lebensfreude blüht und glüht. Die Manege ist erfüllt von ausgesuchter Zirkuskunst, die keine Wünsche offen lässt.
Niemand Geringerer als der berühmte Luzerner Künstler Hans Erni hat für dieses Jahr das charakteristische Plakat mit dem Pegasus entworfen. Es ist bereits die neunte Kreation, welche die hundertjährige Legende für den Circus Knie seit 1966 schuf. Er ist ein begnadeter Verehrer der Zirkuswelt und insbesondere der Familie Knie.

Die Tiernummern der Familie Knie bilden jedes Jahr die Eckpfeiler im Programm. Als erfahrene Artisten und renommierte Tierlehrer stehen Knies mit ihren geliebten Pferden und Elefanten in der Manege. Mit dabei sind auch dieses Jahr zweimal drei Generationen der traditionsreichen Zirkusdynastie: Fredy Knie jun., seine Frau Mary-José Knie sowie deren Tochter Géraldine Katharina Knie, ihr Partner Maycol Errani und der siebenjährige Sohn von Géraldine, Ivan Frédéric Knie. Letzterer wird neben dem normalen Schulunterricht in der Zirkusschule sporadisch in der Manege stehen. Gemeinsam setzen sie eine lebendige Sequenz an Pferdedressuren in Szene. Dabei reicht die Palette von der klassischen Hohen Schule bis zur eindrücklichen Freiheitsdressur; in der Manege finden sich Pferde verschiedenster Rassen und Farben sowie die beliebten Ponys ein.

Ebenfalls drei Generationen zählt die Familie von Franco Knie: Nach einem rührenden Manegeneinstand im letzten Jahr wird Chris Rui, der dreijährige Enkel des Zirkusdirektors, wohl vereinzelt wieder gemeinsam mit seinen Eltern – Franco Knie jun. und Linna Knie-Sun – und natürlich den imposanten Asiatischen Elefanten im Scheinwerferlicht stehen. Die wahr¬haftige Schönheit dieser faszinierenden Tiere wird wiederum poetisch-spielerisch dem Publikum offenbart.
Dass im Zelt des grössten Schweizer Zirkus jeweils nur die besten Artisten ihr Können zum Besten geben, ist dem anspruchsvollen Publikum seit jeher bekannt. Jahr für Jahr engagiert die Artistische Direktion unter Fredy Knie jun. eine Auswahl von Weltklasse-Akrobaten, welche in klassischen sowie modernen Disziplinen begeistern.

Dieses Jahr – um mit einer weiteren Legende anzufangen – wird Kris Kremo mit seiner un¬vergleichbaren Jonglage auftreten. Ein weiteres Highlight bildet eine spektakuläre Truppe von Einradfahrerinnen aus China, die Inner Mongolian Unicycle Troupe; sie gehen mit ihren Balanceakten bis an den Rand des Möglichen. Eintauchen in eine orientalische Welt aus Tausendundeiner Nacht heisst es mit der Hula-Hoop-Artistin Yelena Larkina und ihren kreisenden Reifen. In der Luft bewegt das Duo The Sorellas, zwei hoch angesehene Trapezkünstler, mit ihren gewagten Figuren die Gemüter. Auf dem sicheren Boden verzaubert das Handstand-Duo Serjo das Publikum. Weiter wird dieses Jahr das Circus-Theater Bingo für die Openings besorgt sein. Die neun ukrainischen Akrobaten, vereint mit den Fratelli Errani, bringen frischen Wind in die Manege. Letztere sind bekannte Gesichter im Schweizer National-Circus: Doch dieses Jahr überraschen sie zusätzlich mit zwei neu kreierten Nummern, nämlich einem Doppel-Tanzseil sowie einer rasanten Jockey-Reiterei, wobei auch Rebecca Fratellini zu sehen ist.

None less than Hans Erni, the famous artist from Lucerne, was entrusted with the design for this year's signature Pegasus poster. This is the 9th creation produced by the legendary centenarian for Circus Knie since 1966. He is an exceptionally gifted admirer of the circus world, and of the Knie family in particular.

Each year, the Knie family's animal acts form the cornerstone of the circus programme. As experienced artistes and renowned animal trainers, Knie family members take their places in the ring with their beloved horses and elephants. This year, they will be joined by two tri-generational groups from the traditional circus dynasty: Fredy Knie jun., his wife Mary-José Knie and their daughter Géraldine Katharina Knie, her partner Maycol Errani and Géraldine’s seven year-old son, Ivan Frédéric Knie. Ivan will be making sporadic appearances in the ring alongside his lessons at the circus school. The artistes will be staging a spirited set of dressage sequences, ranging from classical advanced dressage to impressive performances by liberty horses. The circus horses are of all breeds and colours, and the team also includes the ever-popular ponies.

Franco Knie’s family also numbers three generations. After last year’s moving ring début, Chris Rui, the circus director’s three year-old grandson, is likely to be stealing the spotlight every now and then with his parents, Franco Knie jun. and Linna Knie-Sun, not forgetting the striking Asian elephants, of course! These fascinating animals will once again be presented to the public in all their beauty during performances both poetic and playful.
Discerning audiences have always known that only the best artistes wow spectators with the crème de la crème of their creative prowess in the Big Top belonging to Switzerland's largest circus. Year after year, the artistic management team, headed by Fredy Knie jun., hires a selection of world class acrobats who impress the public with performances in classical and modern disciplines.

Let’s begin with another legend, namely Kris Kreme, who will be showing off his peerless juggling skills this year. A spectacular troupe of unicyclists from China, the Inner Mongolian Unicycle Troupe, is another highlight whose groundbreaking balancing acts seem to teeter on the brink of the impossible. Hula hoop artiste Yelena Larkina invites spectators to immerse themselves in the Oriental world of the Arabian Nights, mesmerised by her endlessly circling hoops. The duo The Sorellas, two highly esteemed trapeze artists, stirs the emotions with their daring acts high in the air. Handstand duo Serjo captivates the public from the safety of the ground. The Circus Theatre Bingo will be returning to guarantee extravagant opening performances this year. The nine Ukrainian acrobats will be teaming up with the Fratelli Errani to bring a breath of fresh air to the ring. The latter are familiar faces in the Swiss National Circus. However, they will be surprising audiences with two new numbers this year, a double tightrope dance and a breakneck jockey display also featuring Rebecca Fratellini.
