Ara fa uns instants he tingut l’oportunitat de passejar per primer cop per l’exposició que avui presentem: “Reuters mira el món”. És difícil de descriure el sentiment que provoca caminar tranquil•lament entre les escenes que reviuen els fotògrafs de Reuters en aquestes parets.
He pogut veure mares plorant per la mort dels seus fills, nens famèlics implorant un tros de pa amb la mirada perduda, centenars d’homes asseguts en una embarcació sense rumb anhelants d’arribar vius a la terra ferma del món occidental... He vist també el terrorisme dibuixat en forma de ciment esmicolat, i m’he emocionat en veure la desgràcia que queda darrera el pas d’un cicló o un huracà...
Entre l’any 2000 i el 2005 realment van succeir moltes coses i de vegades la memòria és selectiva i ens empeny a oblidar moments, situacions claus per a les nostres vides, per a les vides particulars d’individus desconeguts, i alhora per a la humanitat. El privilegi que tenim avui, i el missatge que entenc que hauríem d’extreure d’aquesta exposició, és que no podem oblidar aquests episodis que, malauradament, es veuen massa influïts per les modes informatives del dia a dia.
En un món globalitzat com el que vivim es donen, sovint, certes incongruències. Com pot ser que més de 200.000 persones (algunes estimacions apunten que són mig milió) hagin estat assassinades i 2,5 milions desplaçades de Darfur des de principis de 2003 i el testimoni d’aquestes víctimes només es conegui a través d’una informació de dos minuts al telenotícies? Què en pot aprendre el ciutadà si la informació se cenyeix als fets però no en les causes? Coneixem la interrelació que es crea entre un conflicte armat i un altre? Entenem quin efecte pot provocar en una família o un nen de l’Àfrica la signatura que es fa en un despatx de Nova York sobre un document que estableix les tones de producció demandades d’un producte agrari o d’un combustible orgànic?
Quan observes tot aquest recull de fotografies descontextualitzades t’adones que cada decisió que es pren pot tenir un efecte directe sobre un individu que viu a l’altra punta del planeta. I és per aquest motiu que ens cal seguir trobant-nos cada dia amb la mirada d’aquest nen que plora perquè fa mesos que no plou o les banderes ensangrentades d’una nació que fa anys que malda per la seva independència. Els testimonis fotogràfics que avui presentem ens permeten seguir recordant i alhora ens obliguen a fer-nos preguntes.
L’exposició es titula en anglès “L’estat del món” i és així, de fet, com és el món. Un joc de contrastos on la tecnologia puntera s’equipara amb les terres devastades pels desastres naturals, on el show business del món cinematogràfic acapara més minuts a la televisió i més pàgines a revistes i diaris que les repressions militars a desenes de països o on una cimera bilateral entre dos grans potències mundials congrega més interès periodístic que els efectes físics i psicològics que provoca en els nens guerrillers la fi d’una gerra civil al seu país.
Amb el recorregut per aquests àmbits, els autors ens plantegen el repte que siguem nosaltres mateixos els qui ens qüestionem com és el món en el que vivim i quin és el món que volem construir. Hem d’entendre les regles del joc internacional com una imposició o podem fer la nostra aportació per millorar-les?
Estic segura que molts de vosaltres, com jo mateixa, heu arribat a una conclusió més ferma aquest matí. Estic segura que molts de vosaltres haureu vist en els ulls d’aquests nens, d’aquests soldats o aquestes mares, el reflex del vostre desig de participar. De participar en aquest món, però que aquest món, el vostre, sigui el millor del móns. Reuters mira el món, però, de fet, som tots nosaltres qui el construïm.
Translation - English A warm welcome to all,
A few moments ago I made my first visit to the exhibition we are presenting today: “The State of the World”. It is difficult to describe the feeling produced by strolling among the scenes the Reuters photographers recreate on these walls.
I saw mothers weeping for the death of their children, hungry children begging for a piece of bread with a lost look in their eyes, hundreds of men seated in a drifting boat yearning to reach the shores of the western world... I have also seen terrorism in the form of crumbled concrete ruins and I have been moved seeing the destruction left behind by tornados and hurricanes.
In the years between 2000 and 2005 many things happened and sometimes our memories are selective and allow us to forget certain moments, key situations in our lives, in the lives of strangers and also for humanity. The privilege we have today and the message that I believe we must extract from this exhibition is that we cannot forget these episodes which, unfortunately, are all too influenced by the tendencies of the day to day news media.
In a global world like the one we share there are often certain incongruities. How can it be that over 200,000 people (some estimates say over 500,000) have been murdered and 2.5 million uprooted in Darfur since early 2003 while the testimony of these victims is only visible in two-minute television news spots? What can people learn if information is limited to just the facts but not the causes? Do we know the relationship between one armed conflict and another? Do we understand the effect a decision made in an office in New York establishing the production quota of a farm product or a bio-fuel can have upon a family or child in Africa?
When you see this collection of photographs taken out of context you realise that every decision made may have a direct effect upon an individual living on the other side of the planet. This is why each and everyday we must turn our attention to the face of this crying child and ask ourselves how many months it has been since it has rained or how many years blood has been spilled in a nation struggling for its independence. The photographic testimonies we present today allow us to continue remembering and at the same time make us ask ourselves questions.
The exhibition is titled “The State of the World” and does, in fact, show us the world as it is. It is a game of contrasts where the latest technology travels to counties devastated by natural disasters, where film stars glamour is given more television air time and more magazine and newspaper pages than the military repressions in dozens of countries and where a bilateral summit between two superpowers attracts more journalistic interest than the physical and psychological scars left on child soldiers at the end of a civil war.
With this photographic journey the authors challenge us to question ourselves about the world we live in and the world we would like to build. Must we understand the rules of the international game as an imposition or can we make our contribution towards improving them?
I am sure that many of you have become more convinced this morning as I myself have. I am sure that many of you have seen in the eyes of these children, these soldiers and these mothers the reflection of your desire to participate, to participate in this world and that this world, our world, should be the best of worlds. Reuters sees the world but, in fact, all of us create it.

Wuapi es un sitio web en el que provee a los propietarios legítimos de los derechos de autor (en adelante “Usuarios”) de la capacidad de publicar ellos mismos en Internet mediante la carga, almacenamiento y exhibición de diversos tipos de contenidos de video y de contenidos textuales que conjuntamente se denominan “Archivos de Usuario”.
En ningún caso se podrá utilizar los Servicios de Wuapi si no se aceptan con anterioridad los Términos y Condiciones. Con la simple utilización de los Servicios, el Usuario reconoce y acepta los Términos y Condiciones de Uso de Wuapi.
Los Términos y Condiciones constituyen un contrato legalmente vinculante para todos los usuarios del Sitio Web. y para Wuapi en relación con su utilización de los Servicios.
Las versiones de los Términos y Condiciones en idioma español son las que regirán su relación con Wuapi. Cualquier traducción de los Terminos y Condiciones se facilita a efectos estrictamente informativos y sin validez legal.

El Usuario reconoce y acepta ser el único responsable de sus Archivos de Usuario y de las consecuencias de su publicación. Wuapi podrá cancelar el acceso al Sitio Web de cualquier usuario considerado como infractor.
El Usuario que considere que se han infringido los derechos de copyright deberá remitirnos una notificación por escrito que contenga toda la información indicada a continuación con el siguiente formato:
1. Debe incluir una declaración en la que nos informe de que ha encontrado en Wuapi un vídeo que cree que infringe sus derechos de copyright..
2. Nos ha de indicar en qué país se aplican sus derechos de copyright.
3. Debe incluir la información específica sobre el trabajo cuyos derechos de propiedad el Usuario alega que han sido infringidos, así como la información concreta sobre la ubicación y descripción (incluido el titulo) del citado material, además de información detallada que nos permita localizar el material. El Usuario deberá incluir la URL o URLs de las páginas web en las cuales se encuentra el material supuestamente infractor.
4. Nos ha de indicar la forma en que ese vídeo infringe los derechos de copyright.
5. Se deben identificar el tipo y los detalles del trabajo protegido por copyright sobre el que el Usuario posea los derechos que crea que se han infringido. Si esta información se encuentra disponible en Internet, será de utilidad que nos envíe un enlace.
6. Debe proporcionarse información razonablemente suficiente para permitir contactar la parte demandante. Dicha información debe incluir un nombre, dirección, número de teléfono y correo electrónico en los cuales dicha parte pueda ser contactada.
7. Deberá proporcionar una información de contacto que podamos transmitirle a la persona que ha enviado el vídeo en cuestión para que pueda ponerse en contacto consigo y resolver el caso directamente (preferiblemente, una dirección de correo electrónico).
8. Incluya la siguiente declaración: "Confirmo que la parte demandante actúa con el convencimiento de buena fe que el material sobre el que se presenta la presente queja no está siendo usado con el permiso del propietario de los derechos, su representante o de acuerdo con la ley”.

Translation - English Terms and Conditions of Use
Wuapi is a Website providing legitimate copyright holders (hereinafter “Users”) the capability to publish their materials on the Internet via uploading, storage and exhibition of diverse types of video and textual content (hereinafter “User’s Files”).
Under no circumstances may Wuapi’s services be used without first accepting these Terms and Conditions. The mere use of the Services represents the User’s recognition and acceptance of Wuapi’s Terms and Condition of Use.
The Terms and Conditions constitute a legally binding contract for all Users of the Website and for Wuapi in relation to its use of the Services.
The Spanish versions of the Terms and Conditions shall govern all relations with Wuapi. Any translation of the Terms and Conditions is provided for informative purposes and has no legal validity.
In the event of a contradiction between what is expressed in the Spanish version of the Terms and Conditions and what is expressed in a translation, the Spanish version shall prevail.
In order to use the Services and accept the Terms and Conditions the User must be legally able to enter into a binding contract with Wuapi and must live in or access the Services from a country where the current legislation allows it.
The User accepts that Wuapi does not guarantee any type of confidentiality in regard to the User’s Files, whether or not they are published.
Wuapi does not revise in any way the “User’s Files” stored on our servers by the users of our service.
The User recognises and accepts being the sole responsible party for his/her User’s Files and the consequences of their publication. Wuapi does not endorse any User’s Files or commentary or text sent in relation to the same, expressly excluding all responsibility related to the User’s Files.
Users of the Wuapi website must be responsible for its use, respecting the confidence the Wuapi managers and its users place with them. Mutual respect is the Wuapi community’s basic rule of coexistence.
The User will continue to be the owner of all rights relating to his/her User’s Files even though, in uploading a User’s File to Wuapi, the User is granting Wuapi a non-exclusive worldwide license that is transferable and without royalties to use or distribute that User’s Files in the rendering of Services by Wuapi. The User also grants to each user of the Wuapi website a non-exclusive worldwide license, without royalties to access his/her User’s Files via the Website and to use and reproduce these User’s Files under these Terms and Conditions.
The User recognises and accepts that his/her conduct on the Website (and the content of all his/her User’ Files) shall comply with all local, national and international laws.
The User accepts and recognises that he/she may not, under any circumstances, alter or change any part of the Website or the Services.
The User accepts that he/she may not use Wuapi for commercial purposes without previous written authorisation by Wuapi.
The User must create a Wuapi account to access determined Website functions and other Services. To create an account, the User shall provide specific information correctly and completely.
The User accepts being the sole responsible party (toward Wuapi and other third parties) for all activity that takes places with his/her Wuapi account.
The User recognises being the sole responsible party (without Wuapi assuming responsibility toward the User or toward any third party) for the non-compliance of his/her obligations foreseen in the Terms and Conditions and of the consequences (including losses or damages which Wuapi may incur) derived from their non-compliance.
The User demonstrates and guarantees that he/she is the owner (and will continue to be so while using the Services) of all licenses and all the rights, approvals and permission necessary to allow Wuapi to use his/her User’s Files for the rendering of Services and for any other purpose in the manner described in the Website and in these Terms and Conditions.
Wuapi applies a policy of copyright protection in relation to the User’s Files that presumably infringe the rights of a third party.
The User recognises and accepts that under no circumstances may he/she publish or upload any User’s File that contains contents whose possession would be illegal for the User in his/her country of residence or whose use or possession would be illegal for Wuapi in relation to the rendering of the Services. Likewise, the User may not upload or publish any User’s File that is subject to copyright by third parties without their formal authorisation to publish the material in question.
Wuapi may cancel any User’s access to the Website who is considered to have broken these rules.
Users believing that copyrights have been violated should send us a written notification containing all the information indicated as follows in the following format:
1. Include a declaration informing us of finding in Wuapi a video believed to infringe his/her copyright(s).
2. Indicate the country where the copyright applies.
3. Include the specific information on the work whose copyright the User alleges to have been infringed as well as the concrete information on the location and description (including the title) of the mentioned material, in addition to detailed information allowing us to find the material. The User should include the URL or URLs of the websites where the supposedly infringing material is located.
4. Indicate the manner in which the video infringes copyrights.
5. Identify the type and the detail of the copyrighted work over which the User holds the rights believed to have been infringed. If this information can be found online, it would be helpful to send us a link.
6. Provide reasonably sufficient information to allow us to contact the claimant.
7. This information should include a name, address, telephone number and E-mail where the party may be contacted.
8. Provide contact information we may transmit to the person who sent the video in question so he/she might make contact and resolve the matter directly (preferably, an E-mail address).
9. Include the following declaration: “I confirm that the claimant is acting on the conviction in good faith that the material about which this complaint is being submitted is not being used with the permission of the copyright owner, his/her representative or in compliance with the law”.
10. Include the following declaration: “I confirm under penalty of perjury that the information provided is true and accurate and that the informing party is acting in representation of the owners of the exclusive copyrights which have been presumably infringed”.
11. Sign the notification. A scanned physical signature or a valid electronic signature will be accepted.
12. Send the notification in writing to the following address.

The User must assure him/herself that the content seen on Wuapi infringes his/her copyright. If in doubt, Wuapi suggests that the User make a previous consultation with a legal advisor since a false allegation or one given in bad faith relating to a copyright infraction could have adverse legal consequences in his/her country.
The Terms and Conditions and their relation with Wuapi shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the Kingdom of Spain. The User and Wuapi are required to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the Kingdom of Spain to resolve any conflict derived from the Terms and Conditions. Without detriment to the preceding, the User accepts that Wuapi may solicit preventative measures (or other equivalent legal measures in an urgent situation) in any jurisdiction.
Wuapi Privacy Policy
Wuapi applies measures to guarantee its Users’ privacy. When Wuapi’s services are used, we receive and compile different types of personal information.
• Wuapi compiles personal information (“Personal information” is the information you provide us with when you register and create an account with Wuapi and that identifies you personally such as your name, E-mail address or other types of data like a password to be used to protect your account against non-authorised accesses).
• Wuapi’s servers save information automatically when you visit our website or use our products, including the URL, IP address, type of browser and language and the date and time of your request. Likewise, we use the personal information to identify users and some data that does not allow personal identification (such as information on the use of anonymous users, cookies, click monitoring information, etc.) to improve the quality, design and User services of the Wuapi sites.
• We can use the personal information to offer the services you have requested including services that show content and personalised advertising.

Source text - Catalan Un concert d'orgue de vidre tanca el cicle d'audicions musicals del Palau Robert
Un peculiar instrument, l’orgue de vidre, protagonitzarà la darrera de les audicions del cicle de concerts 2008 del Palau Robert de Barcelona. L’audició, a càrrec dels músics Marc Grauwels (flauta) i Thomas Bloch (orgue de vidre), tindrà lloc a la sala gran de les Cotxeres d’aquest centre el 21 de maig, a les 20 hores.
L’orgue de vidre, o Glasharmonika,data del segle XVIII. Està format per un teclat amb varetes de vidre, que es freguen amb els dits humits i emeten un so íntim i profund. L’orgue de vidre va ser prohibit a Alemanya i va desaparèixer cap al 1835 perquè es deia que les seves notes excitaven els animals, provocaven parts prematurs i el defalliment de l’home més robust, i feien embogir els intèrprets que el tocaven. En canvi, el compositor italià Nicolò Paganini parla d’un “orgue angelical”, Maria Antonieta el feia sonar i Mozart va compondre diverses obres per a aquest instrument.
Grauwels i Bloch interpretaran obres de Telemann, Bach, Mozart, Debussy i Piazzola, entre altres. Jaume Radigales, professor a la Universitat Ramon Llull i crític musical, presentarà aquest concert (que serà enregistrat per Catalunya Música i retransmès en diferit a través del dial 101.5 d’FM).
Thomas Blochés, un dels millors glasharmonicistes del món, ha rebut el diploma d’Acústica del Conservatori Nacional Superior de Música de París i altres premis internacionals. Cada any duu a terme uns 150 concerts. Ha actuat com a solista a l’Scala de Milà, al Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, amb prestigioses orquestres franceses, i en els festivals Pau Casals de Prada de Conflent, al Festival de les Nacions i en les millors sales d’Europa. Bloch també és conegut com a compositor i com a acompanyant d’altres artistes del món del teatre, del cinema, de la cançó i de la dansa.
Marc Grauwels, el 1976, va ser flauta piccolo al Teatre de la Monnaie de Brussel•les i l’any següent va entrar a l’Orquestra Simfònica de la Ràdio-Televisió Belga com a flauta solista. Imparteix la docència al Reial Conservatori
de Brussel•les i al Reial Conservatori de Mons, a Bèlgica. Ha transcrit les obres de Felix Mendelsshon i les ha enregistrades pel segell NAXOS, que ha creat una col•lecció pròpia dedicada exclusivament a Grauwels, “The Flute Collection”. Cada any ofereix més de cent concerts.
Col•laboració amb el programa “Apadrina”
El Palau Robert de Barcelona, conjuntament amb l’Agència Catalana de Cooperació al Desenvolupament de la Generalitat de Catalunya, organitza cada any aquest cicle d’audicions musicals en col•laboració amb una organització d’ajuda humanitària. Enguany es porta a terme amb la finalitat de donar a conèixer el programa “Apadrina”, una iniciativa de l’Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona i dels voluntaris que col•laboren amb l’Hospital Saint John of God, de Sierra Leone, que es manté gràcies als seus socis i amics i que gestiona l’Obra Social dels Germans de Sant Joan de Déu.
El públic que assisteix als concerts fa una aportació de 4 euros per persona, i la recaptació es destina al programa solidari de Sant Joan de Déu. Les entrades es posaran a la venda el dia del concert, al mateix Palau Robert, a partir de les 17 hores. L’aforament de la sala és limitat.

The extraordinary glass harmonica will take centre stage at the last audition of the 2008 concert series at the Palau Robert in Barcelona. The audition by musicians Marc Grauwels (flute) and Thomas Bloch (glass harmonica) will take place in the large hall of the Cotxeres of this centre on 21 May at 8 pm.
The glass harmonica or Glasharmonika, dates back to the 18th century. Its “keyboard” is a row of glass rods that are rubbed with wet fingers to (is a series of glass bowls on a spindle that, when touched with wet fingers,) emit an intimate and profound sound. The glass harmonica was prohibited in Germany and disappeared around 1835 because its sound was purported to excite animals, provoke premature births and the death of the strongest of men as well as insanity in the musicians who played it. However, the Italian composer Niccolò Paganini spoke of an “angelic organ”, Marie Antoinette played it and Mozart composed several pieces for this instrument.
Grauwels and Bloch interpret works by Teleman, Bach, Mozart, Debussy and Piazzola among others. Jaume Radigales, professor at the Universitat Ramon Llull and music critic will present this concert (which will be recorded by Catalunya Música and retransmitted at 101.5 on the FM dial).
One of the best glasharmonicistes worldwide, Thomas Blochés holds a diploma in Acoustics from the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris as well as other international titles. Every year he plays around 150 concerts. He has played as a soloist at the Scala in Milan, at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, with prestigious French orchestras and in the Pau Casals de Prada de Conflent Festival, at the Festival de les Nacions and in the best concert halls in Europe. Bloch is also well known as a composer and as an accompanist for other artists in the worlds of theatre, cinema, music and dance.
In 1976, Marc Grauwels held the piccolo flute chair at the Teatre de la Monnaie in Brussels and the following year he entered the Belgian Radio-Television Symphonic Orchestra as flute soloist. He teaches at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and at the Royal Conservatory in Mons, Belgium. He has transcribed the works of Felix Mendelssohn and recorded them for the NAXOS label which has created a collection exclusively dedicated to Grauwels: “The Flute Collection”. Every year he gives over 100 concerts.
Solidarity with the “Apadrina” programme
The Palau Robert of Barcelona, together with the Catalan Development Cooperation Agency of the Catalan Government organises this series of musical auditions every year in cooperation with a humanitarian assistance organisation. This year its mission is to raise awareness on the “Apadrina” programme which is an initiative of the Sant Joan de Deu Hospital in Barcelona and of the volunteers who cooperate with the Saint John of God Hospital in Sierra Leone. The later is kept running thanks to the members and friends who manage the Community Services of the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God.
Concert goers will contribute €4 per person and the collected funds will go to the Saint John of God solidarity programme. Tickets will be on sale the day of the concert at the Palau Robert at 5 pm. Seating is limited.

L’afany per emocionar i sorprendre
L’empresa d’Oriol Balaguer neix de la passió per la pastisseria.
Des de petit ha conegut l’ofici de mà del seu pare i quan decideix fundar la seva pròpia empresa, després d’haver col•laborat amb prestigiosos professionals de la cuina i la pastisseria, ho fa amb la idea clara que vol ser diferent a la resta i que la innovació ha de ser una constant en la seva activitat diària.
El 2002 inaugura el seu estudi de xocolata i pastisseria, el primer d’Espanya especialitzat en alta cuina dolça. El 2004 obre una botiga a Tòquio i el 2005 inaugura la de Barcelona. A més de la seva formació específica en el món de l’hostaleria i la pastisseria, cal destacar els seus estudis en Belles Arts que, encara que no acabats, li donen la base i l’empenta suficient i necessària per treballar el vessant estètic del producte, i cuidar fins al més mínim detall de la seva presentació. Així doncs, la cultura del disseny és present a l’empresa des dels seus inicis i n’ha sabut treure el màxim rendiment per tal d’aconseguir els objectius empresarials fixats.
La innovadora bomboneria d’oriol balaguer destaca per l’originalitat de les seves formes, textures i aromes i la seva avantguardista presentació evidencia aquesta innovació i la fa irresistible. El packaging és una part més del producte, la seva funció va més enllà de la de merament embolcallar o protegir. Permet visualitzar sabors i textures i materialitzar les sensacions i conceptes que hi ha darrere cada producte.
Aquesta cura per la presentació del producte es va fer evident ja en el seu primer establiment. De la mà del disseny d’interiors i l’arquitectura sap crear l’escenari perfecte perquè el consumidor visqui l’experiència com a quelcom que va més enllà de la simple compra d’un pastís. L’Estudi de Xocolata i Pastisseria és un local innovador i trencador pel que fa al concepte tradicional de la pastisseria. Es tracta d’un showroom de cuina dolça obert al públic.
La botiga de barcelona també n’és un bon exemple. quan algú hi entra per primer cop, no sap ben bé si es troba en una pastisseria o més aviat en una joieria. Cada producte està tractat amb cura i se li dóna l’espai necessari per poder-se presentar al públic amb tot luxe de detalls. Oriol Balaguer reinventa la pastisseria de ciutat amb la inauguració a la zona alta de Barcelona d’una avantguardista botiga de xocolata i pastissos, en un espai únic que combina disseny, estètica i creacions dolces fins gairebé confondre’s. L’absència del tradicional mostrador permet al comprador moure’s amb absoluta llibertat entre les vitrines transparents que mostren de forma subtil i provocadora les propostes del xocolater, reforçant així la imatge que es vol transmetre del producte com a delicatessen dolça i revolucionària. En tan sols 33 m2 s’aconsegueix mostrar un univers gastronòmic de bombons i pastissos com si fossin objectes exclusius.

Inspirant-se en els departaments de disseny d’automòbils, que es basen en el “concept car” per experimentar tendències de futur i provar la seva acceptació en el mercat, Oriol Balaguer desenvolupa el “concept cake”.Cada mes el seu equip proposa un concepte diferent i trencador que els ajuda a estar en constant cerca de la innovació. Aquestes propostes són prototips de textures netes, jocs de dolç i salat, que marquen la pròxima tendència en gustos i sabors sota el precepte obligatori de conjuminar pastisseria i cuina. Un nou llenguatge exclusiu, desenvolupat a principis de 2005, que transforma l’univers de la gastronomia i revoluciona l‘aprenentatge gustatiu. La visió que té del disseny la direcció de l’empresa influeix en la facilitat o dificultat de gestionar-lo, per això, és bàsic un recolzament ferm de la direcció i l’aportació dels recursos humans i econòmics necessaris.
A l’obrador elaboren cada dia uns 12.000 bombons de trenta gustos diferents. El novembre de 2004 inaugura la seva botiga a Tòquio. Per primer cop un pastisser espanyol és present al mercat japonès amb botiga pròpia. El 2001 obté el guardó Millor postres del món amb “Les 7 textures de xocolata”. Ha obtingut també, entre altres, els premis Millor pastisser de Catalunya (2003), Millor pastisser de restaurant espanyol (1997) i Millor web gastronòmica d’Espanya (2005). L’exportació representa un 40% de la seva facturació (més de 2 milions d’euros l’any) i dóna feina a 30 persones.

Barrutoys és una empresa familiar que té els seus inicis en l’any 1968 a Terrassa. Va començar com a botiga de joguines, de nom Barruguet, i actualment, a més de comercialitzar-ne, dissenya i produeix joguines que distribueix a 500 botigues d’àmbit nacional i internacional. Els seus inicis estan associats a l’empenta i convenciment de la seva fundadora Carme Ferrusola,que buscava per a les seves filles unes joguines diferents a les que li oferia el mercat en aquells moments i que estaven lligades al record de la seva infantesa, a la joguina de sempre, la que actualment coneixem com a joguina tradicional.
Des del primer moment, i potser d’una forma intuïtiva, s’adona que el disseny pot ser un bon aliat en la seva recerca de productes diferents i adequats als infants. Cerca la joguina tradicional de la seva infantesa, però reconeix que cal aportar-li la visió dels temps actuals, així en fa una reinterpretació i aporta productes nous i trencadors, i és aquí on el disseny té un paper important. Amb el pas del temps,i coincidint amb la incorporació de les següents generacions en el negoci familiar,la intuïció dóna pas a la professionalització i el 1991 funda el Grup Barrutoys, amb la idea de donar resposta tant al mercat de venda a l’engròs com al detall i amb la vocació de dissenyar i produir les joguines de sempre. La font d’inspiració és les joguines tradicionals, joguines que estimulen i potencien la imaginació i l’expressivitat de les criatures. Oriol Balaguer's company was born of a passion for confectionery.

In 2002, he opened his chocolate and confectionery shop, the first in Spain to be specialised in sweet haute cuisine. In 2004, he opened a store in Tokyo and, in 2005, he opened the Barcelona store. The absence of the traditional counter allows the shopper to move with absolute liberty among the transparent displays which show the chocolate maker's proposals in a subtle and provocative way, thus reinforcing the desired image of the product as a sweet and revolutionary delicatessen. In just 33m2, a gastronomic universe of sweets and pastries are shown as if they were exclusive objects.
In a place of honour of in the Barcelona store we find one of its most innovative elements, the “concept cake”. Barrutoys is a family business that began in 1968 in Terrassa. It began as a toy store called Barruguet and currently, apart from comercialising, designs and produces toys which are distributed to 500 stores nationally and internationally. Its beginnings are associated with the drive and conviction of its founder Carme Ferrusola who looked for toys for her daughters that were different from those available on the market at that time and were linked to memories of her childhood, to her favourite toy, to that which is currently known as a traditional toy.
From the start, and perhaps in an intuitive way, she realised that design could be a trustworthy ally in her search for different and appropriate products for infants. She looked for the traditional toy from her childhood but recognised it was necessary to modernise it. Thus, she has done some reinterpretation and created new and revolutionary products. This is where design plays an important role. With the passage of time, and coinciding with the incorporation of later generations into the family business, intuition gave way to professionalism and, in 1991, the Barrutoys Group was founded. The idea was to sell to the wholesale as well as retail markets and to design and produce traditional toys. The source of inspiration was traditional toys, toys which stimulate and strengthen children’s imagination and expressivity. All toys under the Barrutoys brand follow handcrafted manufacture processes and are basically made of wood. Barrutoys develops products under its own brand and acts as a distributor of other international brands, all of them award-winners for their innovative character. The constant search for new products; improvement of the existing ones; and direct, continuous contact with their clientele and users constantly add to innovation and the use of design as a tool for achieving this innovation and for communicating it. The products are designed by an in-house team of four people lead by a designer while the graphic and communication aspects are done by an external team. Design is present in the products themselves as well as in their presentation.
The interior design of the shops allows the customer to interact with the toys, touch them and try them.
The space’s design transforms the shopping experience into something vital and fun, causing our inner child to spring forth. The avant-garde decoration of the Barruguet shops and the generous exhibition area converts them into surprising places. Its staging is organised into thematic areas to inspire and enjoy all the products and help to find the best ones for children 0 to 12 years old with expert advice, if desired, from the specialised staff.
Design is also an important part of the brand's graphic communications: from the catalogues to the tags for personalising the gifts and from the website to the wrapping paper.
Definitively, Barrutoys uses design as a business tool, taking maximum advantage of the investment made in order to achieve their business goals.

El CAC Málaga presenta la primera exposición individual que se realiza en España de la artista Kara Walker (California, 1969), cuya última exposición ha sido calificada por la Asociación de Críticos Internacionales como la mejor de 2007. La artista americana presentará una instalación creada especialmente para el CAC Málaga con sus características siluetas recortadas y colocadas sobre la pared. Su obra recuerda a las caricaturas recortadas sobre cartulina negra de la corte francesa del siglo XVII. Además, presentará en el Espacio 5 una videocreación.
Esta artista, mediante su trabajo, crea narraciones con un lenguaje visual cargado de estereotipos sexistas y racistas, todo ello con el humor ácido y punzante que la caracteriza. Walker utiliza para representar este universo formas artísticas que toma de la cultura popular del momento fundador de la cultura política de su país.
Kara Walker ha realizado numerosas exposiciones de gran éxito por todo el mundo como Los Ángeles, Roma, San Francisco o Suecia. Su última gran exposición, que es itinerante, se ha podido visitar en el ARC/Musee D’art Moderne de la Ville de París, el Whitney Museum of American Art de Nueva York y el Hammer Museum de Los Ángeles.

CAC Malaga will show the finalists' work from the MálagaCrea 2008 showcase of young creators, organised by the Malaga City Hall Youth Department which features visual arts and images in movement. Different works by young artists from all the related disciplines may be seen: painting, engraving, sculpture, photography, video and installations.

CAC Malaga presents the first individual exhibition in Spain for artist Kara Walker (California, 1969). Her last exhibition was qualified as the best of 2007 by the Association of International Critics. This American artist will present an installation created especially for CAC Malaga with hallmark silhouettes cut out and attached to the wall. Her work reminds us of the characters superimposed on black cardboard from the 17th century French court. In addition, she will present a video creation in the Space 5.
This artist creates narrations through her work with a visual language loaded with sexist and racist stereotypes and with the acid and penetrating humour for which she is known. To represent this universe, Walker uses artistic forms which draw on American pop culture from the founding moment of her country's political culture.
Kara Walker has made numerous highly successful exhibitions worldwide including Los Angeles, Rome, San Francisco and Sweden. Her last big exhibition, which is itinerant, has been to the ARC/Musee D’art Moderne in Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

Distinguidos señores y señoras:
Es para mí un inmenso honor y un grato placer estar presente y hacer uso de la palabra en la sesión inaugural de esta importante Conferencia Internacional sobre la “Alianza de Civilizaciones, interculturalismo y derechos humanos”.
Y permítanme que felicite calurosamente al profesor Cândido Mendes por esta hermosa iniciativa, tan significativa, interesante y útil, en especial en una época en la que, debido a las tensiones existentes, tenemos el deber de persistir en la apertura de los caminos del diálogo y la esperanza.
Los debates que se entablarán, la reflexión a la que se procederá, y los invitados que han accedido a participar en esta Conferencia dan una buena medida de su importancia y significado, al tiempo que reflejan la exigencia y el pluralismo con que se trata un tema tan complejo como éste.
Excelencias:
Puesto que me dirijo a esta asamblea en calidad de Alto Representante para la Alianza de Civilizaciones, deseo aprovechar esta ocasión para compartir con ustedes algunas reflexiones derivadas de la experiencia que he adquirido en los nueve meses que llevo ejerciendo este cargo.
Por consiguiente, voy a formular cinco tesis y tres preguntas: las primeras versarán sobre los temas de debate de esta Conferencia; las segundas girarán en torno a la Alianza de Civilizaciones.
Parte A- Tesis
1. Civilizaciones, culturas y religiones
Como es sabido, la palabra “civilización” surgió durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII; entonces, este término era inseparable de la idea de progreso. A lo largo del siglo XIX, el concepto fue evolucionando hasta confrontarse con el de cultura, de modo que antes de que diera comienzo el nuevo siglo ocupaba una destacada posición en la cultura europea. Hegel, Nietzsche, Spengler, Toynbee y Valéry –entre muchos otros– reflexionaron sobre él. En el siglo XX, dicha reflexión partía de la idea de que las civilizaciones son mortales, así como de la convicción y el temor de que la civilización occidental estaba en declive.
No podemos olvidar –es más, debemos retener esa lección en la memoria– que el temor al declive no fue ajeno a la irrupción de los totalitarismos que asfixiaron a Europa, con la intención de modelarla, y la condujeron a la catástrofe de la II Guerra Mundial y a la barbarie del holocausto.
Tales concepciones se sustentaban en una visión determinista, fatalista y finalista de la historia.
Pero a ella debemos oponer la idea de que no existen declives contra los que no se pueda luchar, y de que el futuro siempre permanece inconcluso, teniendo en nuestras manos la posibilidad y la libertad de construir, evitando incluso lo que puede parecer inevitable. Eso es, precisamente, lo que demuestra la derrota de los totalitarismos.
Presente en nuestra cultura a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos y medio, el tema de las civilizaciones y de su declive es ambiguo, de significados plurales, exigiendo una aclaración de forma inmediata, porque el concepto de civilización nunca está exento de un fuerte contenido ideológico.
Cuando, por ejemplo, asimilamos la caracterización de una civilización a una religión dominante estamos, de entrada, haciendo una elección que es discutible. Así, resulta discutible que hablemos de Afganistán, Irán, Indonesia, Arabia Saudí, Irak o Marruecos como si entre esos países, sus historias y culturas, no existieran diferencias fundamentales; como también es discutible que hagamos lo propio acerca de Estados Unidos, Rusia, Francia, Polonia, México, Brasil o Portugal.
Aceptemos, pues, hablar de civilizaciones, pero teniendo siempre presente la arqueología de este concepto y la historia de esta palabra. No le demos un uso reduccionista, ni la empleemos para construir con ella muros de división y de enfrentamiento. Sabemos –o deberíamos saber– que a las diferencias les corresponden otras tantas semejanzas y que a las divisiones les corresponden afinidades.
2. El choque de civilizaciones
En los últimos años se ha hablado mucho del choque de civilizaciones: un pensamiento milenarista que intenta adivinar o definir el futuro, y que es fruto de una mezcla de profetismo medieval y de prospectivismo actual, que vio en ese enfrentamiento de civilizaciones el rasgo caracterizador del siglo que acabamos de comenzar. Por consiguiente, no es de extrañar que algunos interpretaran los atentados terroristas del 11 de septiembre como la confirmación de dicho vaticinio.
El propio autor de la fórmula, Samuel Huntington, que le había atribuido un significado más profundo y complejo que aquél con el que se popularizó, se apresuró a refutar su uso para explicar los ataques contra Nueva York y Washington. Fue una suerte que lo hiciera, porque los ataques terroristas y las acciones militares que dan respuesta a los mismos no pueden inscribirse, en ningún caso, en un enfrentamiento entre civilizaciones, culturas, religiones o “mundos”.
Los ataques representaron una atroz violación de principios fundamentales comunes a países y pueblos de distintos continentes, culturas y religiones. Y la respuesta a ellos es una respuesta que se da, no contra, sino en nombre del diálogo de civilizaciones.
3. El diálogo de civilizaciones
Las civilizaciones se enfrentan a dos tesis extremistas. Está la tesis de quienes consideran que el diálogo entre ellas es imposible e inútil, o incluso indeseable. Para éstos, lo que caracteriza a una civilización y le da fuerza es su soledad fundamental, el aislamiento, la incomunicabilidad. Eso es lo único que le permite afirmarse y sobrevivir. Para los defensores de esta tesis, el choque es inevitable: o se domina o se es dominado.
Otra tesis, de signo contrario, es la que ve en la globalización la disolución de las identidades y de las diferencias, la vía deseable o inevitable para la homogeneización y masificación del planeta, reducido a un mero mercado global. Quienes piensan de este modo nunca comprenderán que la apertura de una cadena norteamericana de comidas o bebidas en Moscú o Pekín no significa la abolición de las marcas milenarias de identidad y referencia, que se expresan en los imaginarios y en los sistemas simbólicos de los pueblos. Para ellos, el diálogo se reduce al monólogo de la uniformización.
Cualquiera de estas concepciones extremistas es peligrosa e irrealista, y revela, en última instancia, una pulsión totalitaria.
Por lo tanto, al margen de consideraciones filosóficas, antropológicas o de otro tipo, puede decirse que hablar de un diálogo de civilizaciones significa hablar de un diálogo cultural, político, religioso. Significa, también, hablar del marco en el que dicho diálogo debe producirse, así como de los importantes principios por los que se debe regir. Significa, en el fondo, hablar de los desafíos que debemos asumir cuando nos enfrentamos a la responsabilidad –nuestra responsabilidad– de fundar el futuro en el presente.
La experiencia de los siglos y la sabiduría de los pueblos nos demuestran que el diálogo entre civilizaciones y pueblos, forjado en la diversidad y en el respeto mutuo, es necesario, posible y fructuoso.
Es evidente que no se trata de un diálogo fácil, situándose en un punto inestable en el que se cruzan los particularismos y el universalismo, las semejanzas y las diferencias, las afinidades y los antagonismos, el reconocimiento y el distanciamiento, la confianza y la desconfianza, la autonomía y la dependencia, la comprensión y el enfrentamiento. Sabemos, por eso, que el diálogo siempre exige la voluntad de diálogo.
Además, todas las religiones, todas las culturas, todos los grupos humanos tienen una tendencia defensiva al aislamiento y al enfrentamiento. No obstante, también es posible fomentar en ellos una actitud de apertura, tolerancia y respeto por el Otro. Para ello, es preciso que cada civilización, cada religión, cada cultura sea capaz de practicar, en su propio seno, la tolerancia, reconociendo la libertad de conciencia y el derecho a la diferencia.
La historia nos enseña que, en un determinado período, la intolerancia de una cultura o de una religión frente a otras culturas y otras religiones es proporcional a la intolerancia existente en su propio seno. La historia también nos demuestra que la intolerancia de una cultura o de una religión no es estable, y que ha ido variando a lo largo del tiempo.
El siglo que ha terminado (nos cuesta decir “el siglo pasado”, porque lo sentimos presente) presenció los horrores más terribles: genocidios, masacres, exterminios. Algunos de ellos se realizaron en nombre de lo mismo que, en la práctica, rechazaban y despreciaban.
Pero el siglo XX también fue capaz de realizar extraordinarios avances en el reconocimiento de que existen principios, valores y derechos fundamentales que son universales y válidos para todos los seres humanos, con independencia de su raza, religión, sexo o nacionalidad. Ésta es una conquista fundamental para todas las civilizaciones. Es con arreglo a este cuerpo de principios, valores y derechos –que establece el propio concepto de humanidad– que el diálogo entre civilizaciones puede y debe tener lugar.
4. Los derechos humanos
Los derechos humanos, inscritos en la declaración universal, que forman la base de la comunidad de las naciones y que fundamentan la acción de la ONU, son irrevocables. Entre ellos están la libertad religiosa, la libertad de conciencia y de expresión, la separación entre la esfera pública y la privada.
Recordemos, sin embargo, que fueron precisos 55 millones de muertos, 35 millones de heridos, 3 millones de desaparecidos, todo un continente devastado y el horror de Hiroshima y Nagasaki para que la supremacía del Derecho y de los derechos ocuparan el centro de la paz y de la seguridad internacionales, a cuyo servicio se encuentra la Comunidad Internacional a través de sus principales organizaciones, con la ONU, naturalmente, en primera línea.
Y a los derechos humanos también debemos añadir la democracia y el Estado de derecho, tres vértices de un triángulo virtuoso, en cuyas virtualidades el siglo XX vio la promesa de la recomposición del orden internacional tras los grandes conflictos mundiales.
En resumen, el siglo XX supuso dos grandes avances: por un lado, el reconocimiento del valor y el alcance universales de los derechos humanos. Por otro, su colocación en el centro del sistema internacional, no sólo como principio regulador de las relaciones entre los pueblos, dotado de una función estructurante de la comunidad y de la vida internacionales, sino también como elemento configurador de la esencia del derecho internacional imperativo.
Por consiguiente, podemos afirmar que, en la actualidad, los derechos humanos forman parte de una especie de acervo de la humanidad, que codifica los parámetros de la dignidad humana.
Esta constatación no impide, sin embargo, que surjan una serie de interrogantes, dudas y cuestiones.
Por ejemplo, el hecho de que actualmente los derechos humanos estén consagrados en el derecho positivo, ¿es la razón por la que han perdido su dimensión política e ideológica?
Se preguntarán ustedes qué entiendo yo por dimensión política e ideológica. Me refiero, en particular, al hecho de que los derechos humanos se fundamentan en un sistema de ideas, representaciones y valores; en una cierta concepción del hombre, de la sociedad y del poder; al hecho de que se asientan en una serie de postulados –el de la igualdad entre los hombres, el de la existencia de derechos subjetivos oponibles al poder, el de la primacía de los derechos del individuo con relación a los de la colectividad; me refiero, finalmente, al hecho de que analizan de un determinado modo –y ésa es su dimensión política propiamente dicha– las relaciones entre el individuo y el Estado, pero también entre el poder y el derecho.
En mi opinión, es preciso que no perdamos de vista su dimensión plurifacética, esta multiplicidad de planes de análisis, si deseamos evitar las derivas de toda la especie que amenazan el tratamiento de los derechos humanos.
Un segundo grupo de interrogantes guarda relación justamente con la temática de la universalidad de los derechos humanos.
En el paradigma –digamos, clásico– de los derechos humanos, prevalecía su naturaleza universal, no sólo en el plano filosófico, sino también en el de su reivindicación, que pasó a revestir un carácter planetario, fruto, en realidad, de un proceso de internacionalización de los derechos humanos.
Pero la globalización que finalmente radicalizó el enfrentamiento entre la diversidad de las culturas plantea una nueva e inesperada cuestión: ¿será la universalidad de los derechos humanos contraria al pluralismo cultural?
5. El pluralismo cultural
En nuestros días, el que antaño fuera un triángulo virtuoso compuesto por la democracia, el Estado de derecho y los derechos humanos se halla sometido a una presión desmedida.
Y si no, veamos un ejemplo: el del caso de Irak, que refleja claramente que la democracia no se puede imponer por la fuerza, que un Estado de derecho no se construye sin un amplio consenso popular y que, sin un respeto por los derechos humanos, no se consigue garantizar, de forma duradera, ni la paz ni la seguridad, ni un Estado de derecho democrático. Tomemos la polémica del uso del velo islámico por parte de algunas mujeres islámicas en las sociedades denominadas occidentales. Tomemos el caso de las caricaturas de Mahoma. Los ejemplos proliferan.
Debe subrayarse la extrema dificultad a la que nos enfrentamos en nuestro mundo globalizado. En los últimos años, el proceso de diversificación cultural de nuestras sociedades ha aumentado considerablemente, y la globalización, la revolución en las telecomunicaciones, en los medios de comunicación y en los transportes han convertido los sistemas culturales nacionales en más y más permeables.
Estas transformaciones han colocado la problemática de la universalidad de los derechos humanos en el centro de la gestión democrática de la diversidad cultural, que también se podría denominar el desafío del pluralismo cultural.
Ahora bien, en mi opinión no existe ninguna contradicción entre ambos, sino todo lo contrario, y por una doble razón.
En primer lugar, fue a través de la invocación de los derechos humanos que en todo el mundo se consiguió luchar contra regímenes dictatoriales o totalitarios, que justamente se fundamentan en el relativismo cultural, en el regionalismo o en los particularismos de toda la especie.
En segundo lugar, la mejor forma de preservar las identidades culturales es la universalidad de los derechos humanos, porque sólo en su seno aquéllas se reconocen como derechos.
Sin embargo, esto no elimina la tensión que prevalece entre, por un lado, los relativistas que defienden que los derechos humanos se deben formular con arreglo a las diversas tradiciones culturales, étnicas o religiosas y, por otro, entre los que intentan imponer un cuerpo de reglas en el plano mundial, haciendo tabla rasa de las condiciones de su realización.
A mi modo de ver, éstos son dos escollos que hay que sortear. Para ello, es conveniente comenzar por reafirmar que los derechos humanos son válidos para todos los pueblos, que ninguna especificidad cultural podrá justificar jamás la esclavitud, ni la tortura, ni ningún otro atentado contra la dignidad o la integridad humanas, ni siquiera el mantenimiento de jerarquías injustas, basadas en discriminaciones por razón de sexo, color de la piel, religión u origen.
Pero también debemos aceptar la idea de que la percepción de los derechos humanos está condicionada por la historia y por distintos factores de orden económico, social o político. De lo contrario, corremos el riesgo de convertir la universalidad de los derechos en una realidad meramente teórica o abstracta.
Por lo tanto, es esencial que se conciba una forma de articular lo universal y lo particular, de modo que, sin transigir en lo que se refiere a la existencia de un acervo de principios fundamentales –una especie de derecho común de la humanidad–, no excluya que tales principios con vocación universal se apliquen con flexibilidad y variabilidad, en el respeto por las identidades culturales plurales.
Parte B- Tres preguntas sobre la Alianza de Civilizaciones
Llego ahora a la parte final y paso a formular tres preguntas sobre los desafíos de la Alianza de Civilizaciones.
Primero, con respecto a la iniciativa de las Naciones Unidas, la Alianza de Civilizaciones, tal y como se desprende del excelente Informe del Grupo de Alto Nivel, elaborado por algunos de los aquí presentes –a quienes, por cierto, aprovecho para rendirles un sincero homenaje por el trabajo realizado–, es a todas luces un instrumento político para la construcción de la paz, en el sentido lato de la expresión.
Sin embargo, teniendo en cuenta la complejidad del mundo, la operatividad de este instrumento de actuación comporta un vasto trabajo de preparación de la Alianza, que, dicho sea de paso, se está llevando a cabo, pero todavía adolece de una gran indeterminación. Esta constatación de no conclusión, pese a que por un lado resulta muy estimulante, por otro también conlleva una serie riesgos. Como Alto Representante, no me quedaré de brazos cruzados ni escatimaré esfuerzos, pero soy plenamente consciente de que el peligro radica en la irrelevancia.
Hasta ahora, la Alianza ha atravesado una especie de estado de gracia que, lo confieso, a veces me deja perplejo. En nueve meses, el número de miembros del Grupo de Amigos se ha duplicado, y las solicitudes y manifestaciones de voluntad y disponibilidad para colaborar con la Alianza provenientes de la sociedad civil han sido absolutamente extraordinarias.
En otras palabras, las expectativas son muy elevadas, pero defraudarlas será el comienzo del fin.
En segundo lugar, a la ambición y extensa amplitud de los objetivos perseguidos por la Alianza, se contrapone la modestia de los medios, así como su relativa indefinición.
Sin embargo, de esta limitación he procurado extraer algunas orientaciones positivas. La primera es que la Alianza deberá evitar a toda costa, no sólo competir con las organizaciones internacionales que trabajan en la misma área, sino también repetir sus trabajos. Dicho de una forma positiva: la Alianza debe colaborar con tales organizaciones, debe aportarles algo. Ahora bien, la Alianza tiene que ser un catalizador de asociaciones entre organizaciones e instituciones en torno a proyectos concretos comunes. La Alianza tiene que funcionar como una especie de energía dinamizadora de iniciativas conjuntas, que tengan un impacto en el terreno, en función de un orden de prioridades claramente políticas.
La segunda es que, sin el apoyo de los Estados, la Alianza nunca será una iniciativa creíble ni sostenible. En mi opinión, las cuestiones y problemas de gestión de la diversidad cultural son, en primer lugar, políticos, y, como tal, exigen políticas activas en el ámbito de la educación, la juventud, los medios de comunicación y las migraciones, tal y como claramente identifica el Informe del Grupo de peritos. Estas cuestiones exigen una intervención de los poderes públicos, tanto a escala nacional, como regional, local y, por supuesto, internacional. Por esta razón, no podemos remitir la cuestión del “diálogo de las culturas o de las civilizaciones” al terreno bien intencionado de la buena voluntad, ni al foro ético y moral, ni tampoco, a mi modo de ver, exclusivamente al diálogo interreligioso. Por eso sugerí –y seguiré insistiendo en ello– que los Estados elaboren estrategias nacionales de diálogo intercultural, porque todos estos problemas son, ante todo, de orden interno, más que cuestiones de política internacional. Este punto es fundamental para el éxito de la Alianza dado que, con independencia de la bondad de sus propósitos y de la determinación de los copatrocinadores, si los Estados no se convierten en verdaderos copropietarios de la iniciativa, ésta no será más que una alianza efímera.
La tercera es que resulta indispensable la participación activa de la sociedad civil, sin la que ninguna política puede ser creíble ni sostenible, ya que, en última instancia, es el terreno en el que todo se juega. Éste es el tercer pilar de la Alianza, todavía bastante incipiente, lo reconozco, pero el primer Foro Anual de la Alianza, que se celebrará en Madrid el próximo mes de enero y cuyo anfitrión será el Gobierno de España, supondrá una importante contribución. Estoy convencido de que el Foro proporcionará orientaciones válidas e interesantes para que anclemos la Alianza en las realidades del terreno, para brindar a las organizaciones de la sociedad civil una plataforma de diálogo y de intercambio de buenas prácticas.
Resumiendo, mi objetivo consiste en evitar la duplicación de medios y de estructuras, apostando por la plena utilización de los recursos puestos a disposición por los Estados, las organizaciones internacionales y la sociedad civil, de modo que podamos apuntalar la Alianza en un espacio sólido y compacto de interacciones y asociaciones funcionales. Se trata, finalmente, de inscribir la Alianza en una línea de continuidad de lo que ha sido el espíritu de la reforma de las Naciones Unidas, haciéndola más efectiva en los resultados y más moderada en los medios. Si lo conseguiremos o no, el futuro lo dirá.
La tercera reflexión está relacionada con el lugar reservado a la Alianza en el sistema de las Naciones Unidas. Aquí tenemos, sin duda, varias cuestiones por tratar. Sin embargo, sólo destacaré una que me parece decisiva: la del papel de la Alianza en el ámbito de la resolución de conflictos, bien como instrumento de diplomacia preventiva, bien en los escenarios de posconflicto en el ámbito de la consolidación de la paz.

No quiero extenderme más. Al compartir estas reflexiones con ustedes, sólo pretendo contribuir al debate, siendo cierto que, por mi parte, siempre agradeceré cualquier indicación o sugerencia que deseen proporcionarme con vistas a guiar mi trabajo.
Para terminar, permítanme que reitere lo mucho que la Alianza está en deuda con algunos de los participantes en esta Conferencia, con sus conocimientos, su experiencia y su visión. Y déjenme que destaque, por todas las razones que serían tema suficiente para otra intervención –pero que estoy seguro de que todos los presentes las suscriben–, la extraordinaria contribución del profesor Cândido Mendes, personalidad que, por sus cualidades humanas, disponibilidad y generosidad, su inagotable sabiduría, espíritu universalista y profundo sentido cosmopolita, constituye un verdadero paradigma de Embajador de la Alianza.
Estimado Profesor, mi más sincero y grato homenaje, así como el reconocimiento compartido por todos, por habernos reunido en este maravilloso lugar para debatir cuestiones en las que está en juego, nada más y nada menos, que nuestro futuro.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen:
It is a great honour and pleasure to attend and speak at the inaugural session of this important International Conference on the "Alliance of Civilizations, interculturism and human rights".
Allow me to warmly congratulate Professor Cândido Mendes on this handsome initiative, so meaningful, interesting and useful, especially at a time when, due to the existing tensions, it is our duty to persevere in the opening of the channels of dialogue and hope.
The subjects to be debated, the reflections to be made and the guests that have agreed to participate in this Conference give a good idea of its importance and meaning while reflecting the exigency and pluralism with which a subject as complicated as this one must be treated.
Excellencies:
Since I am addressing this assembly as the High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, I would like to take advantage of this occasion to share with you all a few reflections derived from the experience I have acquired in the nine months that I have held this position.
Consequently, I will formulate five theses and three questions: the first will deal with the subjects to be debated at this Conference; the following will deal with the Alliance of Civilizations.
Part A- Theses
1. Civilizations, cultures and religions
As it is well-known, the word “civilization” was coined during the second half of the 18th century. Then, this term was inseparable from the idea of progress. During the 19th century, the concept continued to evolve until it was confronted with the idea of culture. In this way, before the beginning of the new century it occupied a distinguished position in European culture. Hegel, Nietzsche, Spengler, Toynbee and Valéry among many others reflected upon it. In the 20th century, this reflection grew from the idea that civilizations are mortal as well as the conviction and the fear that western civilization was in decline.
We must not forget in fact, we must keep this lesson in the front of our minds that the fear of this decline was not isolated from the eruption of the totalitarian regimes that suffocated Europe, with their intention of moulding it and finally driving it to the catastrophe of WW II and the horror of the holocaust.
Such concepts were sustained by a determinist, fatalist and finalist vision of history.
However, against this we must pose the idea that there are no declines against which we cannot fight and that the future always remains inconclusive. The possibility and liberty to construct are in our hands, allowing us to even avoid that which seems inevitable. This is precisely what the defeat of the totalitarian regimes shows us.
Although present in our culture during the last century and a half, the subject of civilizations and their decline is ambiguous, of different connotations and requires an immediate clarification because the concept of civilization is never free from strong ideological contents.
When, for example, we associate the characterization of a civilization to a dominant religion we are, from the onset, making a questionable choice. Thus, it becomes questionable that we should speak of Afghanistan, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq or Morocco as if between these countries, their histories and cultures, there were no fundamental differences; as it would also be questionable for us to do the same with the United States, Russia, France, Poland, Mexico, Brazil or Portugal.
We agree to speak of civilizations, but always keeping in mind the archaeology of this concept and the history of this word. We do not give it a fragmentary use, nor do we employ it to build dividing walls of conflict. We know or we should know that for every difference there is a similarity and for every division an alliance.
2. The clash of civilizations
In recent years, much has been said about the clash of civilizations: a turn-of-the-millennium idea which attempts to divine or define the future. It is the fruit of a mixture of medieval prophesy and contemporary prospecting which saw in this conflict of civilizations the characterising trait of the century which we have just begun. Consequently, it should not surprise us that some have interpreted the terrorist attacks of 11 September as the confirmation of this prophesising.
The very author of the hypothesis, Samuel Huntington, who attributed to it a more profound and complex meaning than that with which it was popularised, was quick to deny its use in explaining the attack against New York and Washington. It was fortunate that he did so because the terrorist attacks and the military actions in response to them cannot be attributed, under any circumstances, to a conflict between civilizations, cultures, religions or “worlds”.
The attacks represented an atrocious violation of fundamental principals common to countries and peoples of different continents, cultures and religions. The response to them is a response which is given, not against, but in the name of dialogue between civilizations.
3. Dialogue of civilizations
Civilizations are pitted against two extremist theories. There is the theory of those that consider dialogue to be impossible, useless or even undesirable. For them, what characterises a civilization and gives it strength is its fundamental solitude, isolation and incommunicability. This is the only way it may affirm itself and survive. For the defenders of this theory, the clash of civilizations is inevitable: dominate or be dominated.
Another theory to be contrasted is that which sees in globalization the dissolution of the identities and of differences, the desirable or inevitable path toward the homogenization and massification of the planet, reduced to a mere global market. Those that subscribe to this theory will never understand that the opening of a North American chain of restaurants or soft-drinks in Moscow or Peking does not mean the abolition of millenary symbols of identity and reference which are expressed in the imaginations and in the symbolic systems of the communities. For them, dialogue can be reduced to a monologue of uniformity.
Both of these extremist concepts are dangerous and unrealistic and reveal, in the end, a totalitarian desire.
For this reason, apart from philosophical, anthropological or other considerations, it can be said that to speak of a dialogue of civilizations implies speaking of a cultural, political and religious dialogue. It also implies speaking of the framework in which such a dialogue should take place as well as the important principals by which it should be governed. It implies, in the end, speaking of the challenges that we must take on when we face the responsibility our responsibility of founding the future on the present.
The experience of centuries and the wisdom of different peoples show us that dialogue between civilizations and peoples, forged in diversity and mutual respect is necessary, possible and fruitful.
It is evident that it is not an easy dialogue, situating itself on an unstable point where we find the various particulars and universals, similarities and differences, alliances and oppositions, reconciliation and grievance, autonomy and dependence, comprehension and conflict. We know that dialogue always demands willingness to dialogue.
Moreover, all religions, all cultures, all human groups have a defensive tendency towards isolationism and conflict. Nevertheless, it is also possible to foment in them an attitude of openness, tolerance and respect for the Other. For this reason it is necessary for each civilization, religion and culture to be able to practise tolerance, in its own heart, recognising the liberty of conscience and the right to differ.
History teaches us that, at a certain period, intolerance of a culture or of a religion towards other cultures or religions is proportional to the intolerance existing in its own heart. History also shows us that intolerance of one culture or of a religion is unstable and that it has changed though time.
The century which has just ended (it is difficult to say "the last century" because we still feel its presence) saw the most terrible horrors: genocides, massacres, extermination. Some of them were done in the name of the same thing which, in practice, was rejected and scorned.
But the 20th century was also capable of making extraordinary advances in the recognition of existing principals, values and fundamental rights that are universal and valid for all human beings, independently of their race, religion, sex or nationality. This is a fundamental achievement for all civilizations. It is upon this set of principals, values and rights which establish the very concept of humanity that dialogue between civilizations can and should take place.
4. Human rights
The human rights, inscribed in the universal declaration which form the basis of the community of nations and upon which is founded the UN’s activity are irrevocable. Among them are religious liberty, liberty of conscience and expression and separation between the public and private sphere.
Let us remember, however, that it cost 55 million dead, 35 million wounded, 3 million disappeared, a continent devastated and the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the supremacy of Law and of rights to occupy the centre of international peace and security, at whose service is to be found the International Community through its main organizations with the UN, naturally, in the front lines.
To Human Rights we must also add Democracy and the Rule of Law: three points of a virtuous triangle in whose virtues the 20th century saw the promise of the reconstruction of the international order after the great world conflicts.
In summary, the 20th century saw two great advances. On the one hand, there is the recognition of the value and the universal reach of human rights. On the other hand, there is its placement at the centre of the international system, not only as a regulating principal of the relations between peoples, possessing a function of community and international society structuring but also as a configuring element of the essence of imperative international law.
Consequently, we can affirm that human rights currently form part of humanity’s baggage, codifying the parameters of human dignity.
This affirmation does not prevent a series of questions and doubts from coming up, however.
For example: Is the fact that human rights are currently considered sacred in positive law the reason why they have lost their political and ideological dimension?
You may wonder what I consider to be the political and ideological dimension. I am referring to, in particular, the fact that human rights are founded on a system of ideas, representations and values; on a certain conception of humankind, of society and of power; to the fact that they rest on a series of postulates that of equality among people, that of the existence of subjective rights opposable to power, that of the primacy of individual rights in relation to those of the group . I am referring to, finally, the fact that the relations between the individual and the State but also between power and law and this is political dimension in its purest sense are analysed in a certain way.
In my opinion, it is essential we do not lose sight of this multifaceted dimension, this multiplicity of analytical approaches, if we want to avoid the effects of different types of threats to the treatment of human rights.
A second group of questions are related precisely to the subject of the universality of human rights.
In the paradigm let us say, classic paradigm of human rights, there prevailed its universal nature not only on the philosophical level but also on that of its assertion, which came to have a planetary character, in reality, fruit of a process of internationalisation of human rights.
But the globalisation that finally radicalised the conflict between the diversity of cultures plants a new and surprising question: will the universality of human rights be opposed to cultural pluralism?
5. Cultural pluralism
In contemporary times, what used to be a virtuous triangle composed of democracy, the Rule of Law and human rights, has been submitted to a disproportionate pressure.
For example, let us look at Iraq. Clearly, democracy cannot be imposed by force. The Rule of Law can not be built without a broad popular consensus. Neither peace nor a democratic Rule of Law can be guaranteed for the long term without respect for human rights. Take the polemic of wearing a veil by some Islamic women in the so-called western societies. Take the case of the Mohamed caricatures. There are many examples.
We should highlight the extreme difficulties with which we are faced in our globalised world. In recent years, the process of cultural diversification of our societies has increased considerably and the globalisation, the revolution in telecommunications, in the media and in transport has caused the national cultural systems to be more and more permeable.
These transformations have placed the problem of universality of human rights at the centre of democratic management of cultural diversity which could also be called the challenge of cultural pluralism.
So, in my opinion, there is no contradiction between either but rather, quite the contrary, and for a two-fold reason:
Firstly, it was through the invocation of human rights that all over the world dictatorial or totalitarian regimes (based on cultural relativism, regionalism, or particularities of another type) were opposed.
Secondly, the best way of preserving cultural identities is the universality of human rights because only in its context are they recognised as rights.
Nevertheless, this does not eliminate the tension that prevails between, on the one hand, the relativists that defend human rights being formulated under the diverse cultural, ethnic or religious traditions, and on the other hand, those that try to impose a body of rules on a worldwide scale, making a tabla rasa of the conditions of their making.
To my way of seeing, these are two obstacles that must be dealt with. For this reason, it behoves us to begin by reaffirming that human rights are valid for all peoples, that no cultural specificity may ever justify slavery, torture nor any other attack upon human dignity or integrity, nor even the maintenance of unjust regimes, based on discriminations of sex, skin colour, religion or origin.
We must, however, accept the idea that the perception of human rights is conditioned by history and by economic, social or political factors. If not, we run the risk of converting the universality of rights into a merely theoretical or abstract reality.
For this reason, it is essential that a form of articulating universal and particular notions be conceived without compromising what refers to the existence of set of fundamental principals a type of common law for humanity does not preclude that principals with a universal vocation be applied with flexibility and variability, with respect for plural cultural identities.
Part B- Three questions on the Alliance of Civilizations
Now I will get to the final part and move on to formulate three questions on the challenges of the Alliance of Civilizations.
First, as regards the initiative of the United Nations, the Alliance of Civilization, as can be taken from the excellent High Level Group Report, drafted by some of those present to whom, by the way, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them for the work they have done , is patently a political instrument for the construction of peace and in the broad sense of the word.
Nevertheless, taking into account the complexity of the world, the functioning of this instrument for actuation means a vast preparation task for the Alliance. This, by the way, is being carried out but still suffers from a great indecisiveness. This affirmation of endlessness, in spite of being very stimulating also carries a series of risks. As High Representative, I will not stand with my hands in my pockets nor will I skimp on efforts, but I am fully conscious of the danger of irrelevance.
Until now, the Alliance has passed through a type of grace period that, I confess, sometimes leaves me perplexed. In nine months, the number of members of the Group of Friends has doubled and the requests and demonstrations of willingness and availability to cooperate with the Alliance coming from civil society have been absolutely extraordinary.
In other words, the expectations are very high but not meeting them would be the beginning of the end.
Second, against the ambition and extensive breadth of the objectives pursued by the Alliance are placed the modesty of means as well as its relative indecision.
Nevertheless, from this limitation I have sought to extract some positive orientations. The first is that the Alliance should avoid, at all costs, not only competing with international organisations that work in the same area but also repeating their work. To speak in positive terms: the Alliance should cooperate with such organisations, should provide them with something. The Alliance should have to be a catalyst of associations between organisations and institutions working on specific common projects. The Alliance has to function as a kind of vitalising energy of joint initiatives that have an impact on the terrain, dependant upon a series of clearly political priorities.
The second is that, without the support of the States, the Alliance will never be a believable nor sustainable initiative. In my opinion, the questions and problems of management of cultural diversity are, foremostly, political and, as such, require active policies in the area of education, young people, the media and migrations as they have been clearly defined by the Expert Group Report. These questions require an intervention by the public powers, on a national as well as regional, local and, of course, international scale. For this reason, we cannot relegate the question of the "dialogue between cultures or between civilizations” to the well-meaning terrain of good will, nor to the ethic or moral forum, nor, in my opinion, the exclusively interreligious dialogue. For this reason I suggested and I will continue insisting that the States create national strategies of intercultural dialogue because all these problems are, above all, of an internal order, more than questions of international policies. This point is fundamental for the success of the Alliance given that, independently of the good intentions of its propositions and the determination of the co-sponsors, if the States do not become true co-owners of the initiative, this will be no more that an ephemeral Alliance.
The third is that the participation of civil society is indispensable, without which no policy can be believable nor sustainable since, in the end, it is the field where everything is played out. This is the third pillar of the Alliance, still rather incipient, I recognise, but the first Annual Forum of the Alliance, which will be held in Madrid next January and whose host will be the Spanish Government will represent an important contribution. I am convinced that the Forum will provide valid and interesting orientations so we can root the Alliance in the realities of this sphere in order to dedicate a platform for dialogue and exchange of good practices to civil society’s organisations .
In summary, my goal consists of avoiding the duplication of means and structures, banking on a full use of the resources made available by the States, international organisations and civil society so we can establish the Alliance in a solid and compact space of interactions and functional associations. In the end, it deals with inscribing the Alliance in a line of continuity of what has been the spirit of the United Nations’ modernising, making it more effective in its results and more modern in its means. Whether we achieve it or not, the future will be the judge.
The third reflection is related to the place reserved for the Alliance within the United Nations’ system. Here, we have, without a doubt, several questions to deal with. Nevertheless, I will only remark on one that seems to me to be decisive: that of the Alliance’s role in the area of conflict resolution as an instrument of preventative diplomacy or in the post-conflict scenarios in the area of peace consolidation.
Excellencies:
I do not wish to drag on any further. In sharing these reflections with you my only hope is to contribute to the debate with the certainty on my part that I will always be thankful for any indication or suggestion that you wish to give me to help guide my work.
In conclusion, allow me to reiterate how much the Alliance owes to some of the participants at this Conference, for their knowledge, experience and their vision. And let me underline, for all the reasons that would be subject enough for another speech but I am sure that all those present would subscribe , the extraordinary contribution of Professor Cândido Mendes, a personality who, for his human qualities, availability and generosity, his unending knowledge, universalistic spirit and profound cosmopolitan sense, constitutes a true paradigm of Ambassador of the Alliance.
Dear Professor, my most sincere and grateful thanks, as well as the recognition shared by all for having united us in this marvellous place to debate the questions in which nothing more or less than our future is at stake.

Se realiza RM de cráneo mediante secuencias axiales, sagitales y coronales potenciadas en T1, T2, Flair y difusión.
En el estudio realizado se identifica la fosa posterior, IV ventrículo, el tronco encéfalo y el cerebelo de características normales.
Supratentorialmente hay algunas lesiones en centros semiovales y cortico- subcorticales parietales izquierdas hiperintensas en las secuencias T2 y Flair compatibles con lesiones de etiología vasculo isquémica-gliósis.
No se observan alteraciones en las restricción.
La región selar, las órbitas y los senos paranasales son de características normales.
CONCLUSION:
RM de cráneo con pequeñas lesiones de etiología vasculo esquemica-gliósis, centros semiovales y parietales, cortico subcorticales izquierdas.

HISTORIA CLINICA Y EVOLUCION: paciente que acude porque tras ser ingresada con el diagnóstico de ictus, en última revisión de Neurológica describen que no es de origen neurológico, sino más bien mecánico. La enferma refiere estar mejor de la clínica.
Exploración: TA: 140/95, Peso: 86, Talla: 159, consciente, orientada, colaboradora, buen estado general, bien hidratada y perfundida, eupneica, a febril, CyC: no IY, no sopiso, ACR: RyÇR, no soplos, sibilantes dispersos, abdomen anodino. EE: no edemas.
Independientemente si ha tenido o no un ictus el manejo va a cambiar poco. Le hago hincapié en que debe valorar el abandono de tabaco. Valorará lo de dejar de fumar.
Revisión 2/1/2012. Persiste con dificultad para movilizar MID: A la expiroación RCP abolido y ROT también. Discreta debilidad MSD. Solicito Rm cervicales y columna lumbar Y ENMG.
EVOLUCIÓN: Dr. Mérida: Sin cambios clínicos ni exploratorios. La paciente persiste con hemiparesia derecha, hipoestesia de MSD y debilidad progresiva de MSI, con dolor neuropático asociado.
COMPLEMENTARIAS: Ecografía carotidea clínica: No engrosamiento intimal, no placas de ateroma.
Rm craneo: con pequeños lesiones de etiologia vasculo isquémico-gliosis, centro semiovales y parietales, corticicales izquierdo.
EMG-ENG: Sin alteraciones.
RMN Columna lumbar: cuerpos vertebrales de altura morfología y señal normal. Discreta disminución de la señal de los discos L3-L4 por deshidratación discal. Se observan protrusiones discales foraminales bilaterales pequeñas en L3-L4. Artrosis facetaría. RMN columna cervical: cambios degenerativos artrósicos apreciándose discretos relieves disco-osteofitarios en los niveles comprendidos entre C4-C7 que improntan el espacio subaracnoideo anterior con posible contacto con la superficie del cordón medular.

TAC sin hallazgos significativos, no evidencia de sangrado ni lesión focal
AngioRMN dentro de la normalidad, sin hallazgos patológicos.
Eco doppler de Troncos Supraórticos
Evolución
Se ingresa en unidad de ictus agudo donde se le realizan pruebas complementarias y evoluciona sin problemas importantes hasta el segundo día de ingreso que pasa a una habitación normal del ala de Neurología. Consciente y Orientada en todo momento, en abstinencia del hábito tabáquico desde el ingreso con buen control del síndrome de abstinencia.
Persisten glucemias elevadas y dislipemia a pesar de tratamiento.
Recuperación parcial de fuerza in Brazo derecho 3/5, persiste déficit de fuerza y movilidad de pierna derecha, Maniobra de Hoover positiva.

This 55-year-old patient came to the emergency room for coldness and loss of sensitivity and strength in the right half of body. She had a similar episode limited to the right half, which was less intense. The symptoms are accompanied by a feeling of instability or dizziness.

MRI: CRANIUM
A cranial MRI has been done taking axial, sagittal and coronal T1-weighted, T2, Flair and diffusion sequences.
In the images, the posterior fossa, fourth ventricle, brain stem and cerebellum, all of normal characteristics, are identified.
Supratentorially, there are some lesions in the semioval centers and there are left cortico-subcortical parietal hyperintensities in the T2 and Flair sequences compatible with the etiology of vascular ischemic gliosis lesions.
No alterations were observed in the restrictions.
The sellar region, orbits and sinuses present with normal characteristics.
CONCLUSION:
Cranial MRI with small lesions having the etiology of vascular ischemic gliosis, semioval centers, parietal, and left cortical subcortical.

Cranial MRI w/ contrast: In the study we conducted, we can see the fourth ventricle with unaltered cerebellar vermis and hemispheres. There are no alterations in the posterior fossa. Supratentorially, we see the ventricular system with normal morphology and observe some (lesions) in both semioval centers of high signal in both FLAIR as well as subcortical T2, which could correspond to microinfarcts at the parietal and frontal level. No enhancement of contrast, indicating active or recent ischemic lesions.
DIAGNOSIS:
CVA Review: Atherothrombotic ischemic stroke of the right middle cerebral artery with residual left hemiparesis
Associated parasympathetic-sympathetic dystrophy
Generalized arthrosis.
TREATMENT:
Triflusal 600, participant in a clinical trial of insulin (4 injections per day) for the last 8-9 months, Telmisarten / hydrochlorothiazide 40/12, 5, Eutirox 50, Alendronate, calcium vitamin D, Orfidal, Simvastatin / Ezetimibe 40/10. Hemovas 400, Lorazepam, Pepticum
Pregabalin: 3 tablets every 12 hours.
Should stop smoking.
CONCLUSION: Hospital discharge. Follow-up by patient’s primary care physician, who will modify the treatment according to his/her criteria.

55-year-old patient without any known medical allergies, works at Málaga City Hall, Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus type-1, for the past 10 years, hypercholesterolemia, smoker of 30 years, hyperthyroidism treated with radioactive iodine, currently hypothyroid, hiatal hernia, polyarthrosis, appendectomy, was admitted in July for an episode of numbness right superior extremity (acute on this occasion) and weakness in the left inferior extremity (present for years) with the diagnosis of a possible stroke. Hospital stay for observation 9 years ago for hypoglycemia.
Family history: Diabetic grandmother.

CLINICAL HISTORY AND EVOLUTION: patient comes to us because, after being admitted with a stroke diagnosis, in the last neurological examination it was described that the underlying cause is not neurological but rather mechanical. The patient prefers to be treated at the clinic.
Examination: BP: 140/95, Weight 86 kg, Height: 159 cm, conscious, oriented, cooperative, good general state, well hydrated and perfused, eupneic, afebrile, Head and neck: no JVD, no sopiso, heart and lungs: rhythmic and regular, no murmurs, dispersed wheezing, anodyne abdomen. Extremities: without edemas.

EMG-ENG: No changes.
MRI Lumbar spine: vertebral bodies of normal height, morphology and signal. Slight decrease in the signal of discs L3-L4 due to disc desiccation. Small bilateral foraminal disc protrusions are observed at L3-L4. Facet arthrosis. MRI cervical spine: degenerative arthrotic with discrete disc osteophyte reliefs at C4-C7 that press on the anterior subarachnoid space with possible contact with the surface of the spinal cord.

Evolution
Patient admitted in acute stroke unit where additional tests were performed and evolves without any major problems until the second day of admission when she goes to a regular room in the Neurology wing. Conscious and oriented at all times, in abstinence from smoking since admission and with good control of withdrawal.
Hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia remain despite treatment.
Partial recovery of strength in right arm 3/5, strength and mobility deficits persist in her right leg, Positive vacuum cleaner operation.
