Source text - English I was living in a boarding-house in Ealing. The years were rolling
on, or crawling on. I was the usual young city worker who scoots for the 8.15
and intrigues for the other fellow's job. I was fairly well
thought of in the firm and pretty satisfied with life. The post-
war success dope had caught me, more or less. You remember the
line of talk. Pep, punch, grit, sand. Get on or get out. There's
plenty of room at the top. You can't keep a good man down. And
the ads in the magazines about the chap that the boss clapped on
the shoulder, and the keen-jawed executive who's pulling down the
big dough and attributes his success to so and so's correspondence
course. It's funny how we all swallowed it, even blokes like me to
whom it hadn't the smallest application. Because I'm neither a go-
getter nor a down-and-out, and I'm by nature incapable of being
either. But it was the spirit of the time. Get on! Make good!
If you see a man down, jump on his guts before he gets up again.
Of course this was in the early twenties, when some of the effects
of the war had worn off and the slump hadn't yet arrived to knock
the stuffing out of us.
I went to half-crown dances and belonged to a local tennis club.
You know those tennis clubs
in the genteel suburbs--little wooden pavilions and high wire-
netting enclosures where young chaps in rather badly cut white
flannels prance up and down, shouting 'Fifteen forty!" in voices
which are a tolerable imitation of the Upper Crust.
I'd learned to play tennis, didn't dance too badly, and got on well
with the girls. At nearly thirty I wasn't a bad-looking chap, with
my red face and butter-coloured hair, and in those days it was
still a point in your favour to have fought in the war. I never,
then or at any other time, succeeded in looking like a gentleman,
but on the other hand you probably wouldn't have taken me for the
son of a small shopkeeper in a country town. I could keep my end
up in the rather mixed society of a place like Ealing, where the
office-employee class overlaps with the middling-professional
class. It was at the tennis club that I first met Hilda.
Well, Hilda and I were married, and right from the start it was a
flop. Why did you marry her? you say. But why did you marry
yours? These things happen to us. I wonder whether you'll believe
that during the first two or three years I had serious thoughts of
killing Hilda. Of course in practice one never does these things,
they're only a kind of fantasy that one enjoys thinking about.
Besides, chaps who murder their wives always get copped. However
cleverly you've faked the alibi, they know perfectly well that it's
you who did it, and they'll pin it on to you somehow. When a
woman's bumped off, her husband is always the first suspect--which
gives you a little side-glimpse of what people really think about
marriage.
Translation - French Je vivais dans une pension à Ealing. Les années s’écoulaient, lentement. J’étais le jeune employé citadin typique qui coure pour attraper le train de 08 :15 et qui convoite le poste de son collègue. J’étais assez bien vu dans l’entreprise et je me sentais assez content de vivre. L’euphorie d’après-guerre m’avait touché, plus ou moins. Vous vous souvenez bien de la ligne de discussion. Entrain, coups de poings et cran. Allez de l’avant ou partez. Il y a plein de place au sommet. On ne peut pas limiter les chances d'un employé prometteur. Et les réclames des revues avec le type que le patron tapote sur l’épaule, et celles du cadre à la mâchoire volontaire qui se fait du fric et qui attribue son succès à tel ou tel cours par correspondance. C'est drôle comme nous l’avons tous ingurgité, même des mecs comme moi avec qui cela n’avait absolument rien à faire. Dû au fait que je ne sois ni un fonceur ni quelqu’un qui démissionne facilement, par nature, je ne suis capable d’être ni l’un ni l’autre. Mais c’était la manière de raisonner de ce temps là. Vas-y ! Fais ton chemin! Si tu rencontres un homme par terre, saute-lui dessus avant qu’il ne se redresse. Bien entendu, tout ceci se déroulait dans les années vingt, tandis que certains des effets de la guerre s’étaient estompés et que la crise économique n’avait pas encore vu le jour pour nous mettre à plat.
Je suis allé à des bals qui ne coûtaient qu’une demi-couronne et j’ai été membre du club de tennis local. Vous savez, ces clubs de tennis de la banlieue bourgeoise – des petits pavillons de bois et des cours entourés de haut grillage où des jeunes affublés de pantalons de flanelle blanche et mal taillés se pavanent en s’écriant « Quinze, quarante ! », avec une voix qui imite assez bien le gratin. J’avais appris à jouer au tennis, je n’étais pas mauvais danseur et je m’entendais bien avec les filles. Ayant presque atteint la trentaine, le visage rubicond et des cheveux couleur de beurre, je n’étais pas mal en ce temps là, le fait d’avoir pris part au combat durant la guerre était avantageux. Durant cette période où n'importe quelle autre, je n'ai jamais réussi à ressembler à un gentleman mais d’un autre côté, vous ne m’auriez certainement pas pris pour le fils d’un petit commerçant d’une petite bourgade. Je pouvais entretenir des relations parmi la société plutôt brassée d’un quartier comme celui d’Ealing où la classe des employés de bureau s’imbrique avec celle des professions libérales. J’ai rencontré Hilda pour la première fois au club de tennis.
Eh bien, j’ai épousé Hilda et dès le début, cela a été un fiasco. « Pourquoi l’épouser ? » me demandez-vous. Mais pourquoi avez-vous épousé votre femme ? Ces choses-là arrivent. Me croirez-vous si je vous racontais que j’ai vraiment envisagé de tuer Hilda durant les deux ou trois premières années. Bien entendu, on ne réalise jamais ce genre de chose. En plus, les types qui tuent leur femme se font toujours arrêter. Quelque soit l’ingéniosité de votre alibi, ils savent parfaitement bien que c’est vous qui l’avez fait et ils vous en accuseront d’une manière ou d’une autre. Quand une femme se fait liquider, son mari est toujours le premier à être suspect - ce qui vous donne déjà un petit aperçu de ce que les gens pensent vraiment du mariage.
