German to English: Auspuffanlage und Abgase/Exhaust System and Exhaust Gases
Translation - English The exhaust system of a car must lead off the exhaust gases to the rear so that they can not enter the compartment. The hot exhaust gases of up to 1000 degrees stream out of the cylinder under high pressure and therefore with a loud bang. The exhaust system must damp this noise to such a level that a defined sound level (loudness) is not exceeded. The emissions should be able to stream through the exhaust system with as little obstruction as possible. An exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes and mufflers (also called silencers in British English). Different types of muffler are usually combined for the best sound damping.
English to German: Compressed-Air Storages/Druckluftspeicheranlagen
Source text - English Large CAES plants, over 200 megawatts, require specially modified machines. Smaller plants, in the 25 to 50 megawatt range, can be built with the off-the-shelf equipment from several international suppliers. It is this that makes CAES attractive for small plants: EPRI reckons CAES plants in the 25 to 50 megawatt range have an efficiency (energy-out as a fraction of energy-in) of about 80%, considerably higher than pumped-water storage. They can probably be built (in under three years) for about $500,000 per megawatt compared with over $2m per megawatt for a pumped storage hydro plant.
The Italian national security board ENEL is about to begin tests with a 25-megawatt plant emplying an aquifer as the storage cavern. Meanwhile, in America, several utilities are thinking about installing a CAES plant. The technique's champions are confident one of them will soon take the plunge.
